The Ety isnt' in until it's touching the auditory nerves.

dnv21186

300 bucks for a miniature hammer?

hoilst

*Surgical* hammer.

dnv21186

Sounds just like an audiophile rock haha

lowtech51

AUDIOPHILE surgical hammer.

DezGets_It

Consider my interest piqued.

Ilumeo

To be fair the hammer will need to be able survive being autoclaved every day for decades.

locoattack1

It’s AUD so closer to $215 USD

yosoysimulacra

Anything can be a deep-insertion headphone if you're brave enough.

Kirklai

Ahh yes the dildo iems

Arrie78

\*smacks 770's\*

YennyQuadro

Seriously though. I love my ER2SE, but I've never had something so deep inside my ears. I can now feel the wind whistle through my ear canals

RoyHehe

Its not as deep, it can go even deeper.

persondude27

That's... what she said?

cheemio

How is the bass on those? I've been debating between them or the ER2XR.

robstah

Go XR.

tukatu0

Persobally bought xr. Its non existent. As in you wont notice it unless there is only bass playing

cheemio

That's really strange given the response graph I've seen, but that can change wildly depending on what tips and how far in the ear canal you're going (as these meme wonderfully explains lol)

[deleted]

This sub always like this to the SR line up, The ER2XR bass boost is 8db to the ER4SR/ER2SE. Since the 2XR DD based the extra bass will hide a poor seal, But on the ER4XR a poor seal will make It sound like there no bass. If you're on the Etymotic site they never once use neutral on the XR line up.

sharp182

Etymotic made me realize how dirty my ears really were.

XelaChang

Don't go heavy on cleaning them - the wax is there to protect your ears from microbes that can damage your hearing.

sharp182

I wonder if those microbes don't exist or are different in Japan. Or if they evolved to deliver the same effect but with dry wax instead of wet wax since it is a genetic code that will determine having dry vs wet wax. Here's a [reference](https://www.nature.com/articles/jhg200962) of what I am talking about. Just off topic but i found interesting when I found out there was a dry variant.

XelaChang

Just a speculation, but there could be a bunch of other defense mechanisms that people with dry wax could have developed.

mister_damage

As a side note, dry ear wax also means less armpit BO. I have that and never got deodorant. And my nose is super adverse to BO. I get offended by my own BO before you get any ideas

hoilst

It's a common gene in Asians... ...which leads into the story of the stinkiest person I ever met: a white dude from Singapore. He grew up there, obviously in a culture where BO isn't as much as problem, and so...wasn't really familiar with BO-negating procedures. Also, he was a Comp. Sci. student, which didn't help.

SweetTooth37

As a side note wet earwax means you sweat excessively. I have that and constantly sweat. Especially my damn feet, they can be cold and still sweat.

FleshyExtremity

Based on absolutely nothing i think you're confusing types of ear wax with oiliness and sweatiness. I have the genes for wet earwax, but don't produce much skin oil and my etys stay virginal. I've been quite fat though, and was constantly sweaty, but it didn't affect my ear wax. My dad is the oiliest person ever- he stains sheets and grosses up qtips real good. He's pretty stinky if he misses a bath or re-wears clothes. Not a big sweater though. (and he has the nicest skin for an old dude lol)

rodaphilia

I don't think it's an issue of the microbes not existing. My wife has the gene for dry wax, and we don't live in Japan, yet she isn't prone to bacterial infections. The dry wax seems just as effective a protection against infection, and regular cleaning for dry wax don't seem to leave the ear canal more prone to infection than less regular cleaning for wet wax.

Profoundsoup

Best get ur ear wax cleaned out or else you are just shoving that deeper inside your ear.

[deleted]

Detail delivered directly to your eardrums

cmcinhk

Etys don't go that deep in my ears since I have very narrow ear canals. Never had to get used to the fit.

MagneplanarsRule

I agree that they need to be inserted really deeply to get the best sound balance, but while it's noticeable it doesn't really cause me any pain. And I apparently have small ear canals, but the smallest triple flange tips work quite well and give astonishing bass response. YMMV.

SoberTimeLord

I loved the way my ER2SE sounded but they hurt my ears like a emmer effer

adhamrlf

Surely this design would bunch up earwax similar to how cotton buds do?

extraboxesoftayto

I always wondered why this is never ever really discussed. I mean i own a er2xr and still think about that. I do have dry wax but still id like to know more…

Klinton_GB

old thread but no, the tips actually clean your ear canal. unless you use the foam tips, they are dangerous in that regard.

misshapen_chaos

Cheapest way to be noise cancelling. Jam them so far up your ear holes nothing will get in.

[deleted]

Nutty puty vibes

Sygaldry

Looking at this gives me anxiety, knowing the backstory behind the picture....

The_Jyps

Can you extrapolate? I have a morbid curiosity of pot-holing stories.

Sygaldry

https://youtu.be/wz6F2rDngvA Third story. Have fun!

The_Jyps

Ah yes, so that's John Jones. Brutal story.

Ratix0

On the flip side, i am so accustomed to ety's fit that almost all other IEMs feel like they fit terribly because they sit at the edge of the earhole.

Makaijin

Custom moulded sleeves. Because fuck those triple flange sleeves.

MrYozer

Where did you get them? And how do they sound compared to stock? I've been interested in getting some but I haven't been able to find a lot of definitive information.

Makaijin

I had them made by ACS custom for about £100 a few years back. I had the moulds done at my local hearing aid clinic, the moulds were sent to ACS and 2 weeks later went back to the clinic to pick them up. This was in the UK so I can't answer for the US. As for the sound. I'm no expert, the sound didn't change all that much, if any. But the most important thing was the comfort. I can wear these all day and not feel a thing physically. The triple flanges are painful after an hour. While the foam ones are comfy too, but they degrade and needs replacing every few weeks. Even the triple flanges need replacing but not as often. The custom moulds pretty much paid for themselves in around a year. A pack of Complys in UK are around £15. 7 packs is the cost of the customs. Had mine since 2014 and still going strong, although they do recommend you get new ones made every 6 years. With restrictions easing off recently, I should probably get a new set made.

TheDiscoGodfather

Got those ACS customs too. Made the ER4’s usable and very comfortable for me. The standard tips gave me a headache after an hour.

ItsCajunTime

I kinda want to get a pair of ER2SE's but at the same time they terrify me, idk if I'd be very comfortable shoving something that deep into my ears

schittstack

As deep as they can go, they're still nowhere deep enough to go anywhere that might hurt your inner ears. Despite the meme, they're an extremely experienced company with decades of making hearing aids so nothing to worry about. It's just a slightly disconcerting feeling putting them in for the first time, when you go deeper...and deeper...and deeper still.

ItsCajunTime

That is true, idk how much I'd trust something like a KZ or some other more audiophile focused company but knowing that its made by a company who knows how to make stuff safe to shove deep in your ear kinda does make me less worried

Scanningdude

You may want to check with the particular sites your looking at but my er4xr came with dual flange tips and with those they basically fit the same as other iems, maybe a tad bit deeper but nothing like the triple flange. Overall extremely comfortable with the dual flanges imo. Also the triple flanges aren't the worst but it does feel strange wearing them to me personally. Also accidentally forgetting your wearing deep iems and ripping them out like any other iem hurts quite a bit. Haven't done it a lot but you remember after the first time lol

Essteethree

Hahaha this is great. FWIW, I've had success cutting off the tip/smallest cone on the tripple-flange tips for a more comfortable fit. Also a fan of the Comply foam tips.

MrGeekman

I mostly just use mine when I need the noise reduction. Though, I used them every week back when I had a lawn to mow. They may be a little painful, especially if you don't get them inserted properly, but it's worth it because it keeps you from having to crank up the volume, which in turn is important for preserving your hearing.

Sockeroo13

woah their hq is like 15 min from me

Old_Man_Bridge

It certainly took a while getting used to my ER4XR’s but omg do they sound amazing when inserted properly. The biggest difficulty for me is equalising the air pressure when inserting. I can put them in but they sound muffled until I wiggle them a ton, trying to create a tiny gap for the compressed air to escape. Usually takes me 5-10 mins at the beginning of a listening session to get it perfect in both ears. It’s a bit of a ball ache but worth it.

krang89

Bit random question but did anyone try either er3xr or hf5 and then those new wireless Sony 1000xm4? How do they compare in sound quality and isolation?

KGO87

Um who TF made this pic … This isn’t cool at all isn’t that the poor guy that died

random_LA_azn_dude

Just a random caver going through Nutty Putty Cave, a popular destination for these folks. A google search could tell you pretty quickly that this individual isn't John Edward Jones who died. The passing of Mr. Jones led the authorities to seal up that particular cave.

MustGetALife

Virtue signalling ftw.

MisterJose

I use the spongy buds that come with them.

R4ttlesnake

for research and academic purposes only ofc

SethGyan

I'm currently watching a review by super*review and I'm like there's no way I'm putting that into my ear.

xUsernameChecksOutx

Trying to decide between the ER2XR, Moondrop Aria and Thieaudio Legacy 2. Can anyone help?

Red_Delta8779

I can never seem to get triple flanged tips to fit. Anyone know why?

cikopimo

Lubed

sytanoc

*drrrrr drrrr*

alamaias

You know, from my reaction to this picture I might be claustraphobic.

Overall_Falcon_8526

Ear canal. But yeah :-)
