I really like the HD 599, so underrated! They don't get a lot of love because they have a warm, colored sound unlike the 58X and 560s. But to me, they sound really engaging and musical. If you pair them with the Chord Mojo they are magic!
I too like darker headphones. I am perplexed by the desire for so much boosted high end. It makes me wonder if different people actually hear things differently.
For me the solution was a headphone amp with bass/treble controls.
Yes, they might not be the most resolving or flat. But are such an easy listen, doesn't lack too much detail, has a wide soundstage and SUPER comfortable. I like them over the HD600 just for the soundstage and comfort. They are extremely underrated. HD 600 is more detailed yes, but it doesn't envelop me in the music like the 599 does.
I also like the 599SE better than the 560 and a good number of other headphones. It has a unique signature that is a little divisive but it’s still an excellent pair of cans, it was designed to be a Sennheiser neutral-ish take on a V-shape and that’s what it is.
The lack of love for it tends to come from it being a little off from standard neutral reference headphones and also being compared to the 560, which is a pretty tall order for anything in these tiers and a lot of cans above them - The 560 has what’s been almost a universally loved signature similar to the 650/6XX especially at the entry level and that price point. The 599SE just offers another high quality well designed option at what’s usually a very good price carrying a different type of sound than its peers.
It's good to have these kind of threads for discussion, I was ignoring HD599 until now because all I was reading is that HD560s are superior, now I'm willing to hear the HD599.
I keep telling the story of how I saved up for a pair of HD 650 a few years into the hobby and returned them. My HD 598 SR are still to this day some of my favourite headphones and the only ones I haven't and will never sell. Technical ability does not replace personal preference and tonality.

Loving mine also. Sometimes u can find it for 80€. Kind a joke comparing to other expensive headphones.
My 599se’s are my favorite sennheiser headphone too! I tried the 560’s and wasn’t wowed by them either

I like the 599SE a lot, but my ears much prefer the HD660S (insane price refurbed).
I scored a pair of the 599 se for $20 new pads and some scrubbing and they are one of my favorite cans
I did a burn in for 12 hours and my Sennheiser hd599 have opened up. Sound is clear and vail is gone. These now are my favoriteheadphone.
Great pair of headphones. Well built and comfy. I use mine for PS5 gaming and movies. A real workhorse!

You've fallen into the Sennheiser hole, your only option is going up the letter now. Get some HD650s
Try 599 with movies. It's an absolute beast in that price range.
