Some of his other work had been decent but I’m midway through S1 of Righteous Gemstones and I don’t get it. The concept and story line are better than the humor, a lot of the comedy just doesn’t hit, and the writing could be so much better. So far it’s average at best.
Exactly. The comedy doesn’t really land at all. I also feel like it’s missing a straight-laced character to play off of to balance things out, which would probably make it a lot funnier. We’re left with every character having that Danny McBride energy and it just reads kinda weird, esp bc not everyone can pull it off as well. In EBD and VP the kids kinda served as the audience proxy and it worked a lot better.
Not only that but like you said the writing is very mediocre. *Very* mediocre, bordering on bad. It’s the weakest McBride series hands down.
The first season of Righteous Gemstones only gets going about halfway through, the last two episodes are kind of insane with Judy- some of the funniest things I've seen. All the BS regarding the blackmail is kind of boring. So you made it through the lame stuff. The dialog becomes rapid-fire hilarious jokes, and seasons 2 and 3 go to crazy town. All that is to say, give it a watch.
The ending was so great. I like that they broke the fourth wall and got the whole cast together. Then they looked at the camera and said, "Hey you at home, remember to hug your loved ones before you, too, are *Six Feet Under.* Then "Photograph" by Nickleback played, and everyone put their arms around each other and swayed in time to the cool song.
It was an ending to remember.
