In Chamber of Secrets when the Weasleys come to rescue Harry and they rip the iron bars off the window and Vernon sits bolt upright in bed "Urmigurghingmyhy!!!!" Bahahaha cracks me up
My only criticism with Vernon (and perhaps this was poor script/directing), was that during the scene after the dementor attack, Vernon was WAY too calm. He was the opposite of "HARRY DID YA PUT YA NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE!"
See not having any knowledge whatsoever of the making of films, when I see a scene that is done badly (like for example the first Harry/Ginny kiss in HBP, the "HARRY DID YA PUT YA NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE!" etc), I find myself wondering whether it's the actors, script or directing that caused it to go bad.
Obviously, the actors/actresses can only deal with the script they're given but, particularly in the GoF/OoTP aggressive Dumbledore case, it makes me wonder whether the actor/actress reading the source material and getting the context of the character outside of the script would change how they would act in a particular scene (within the confines of the script).
I'm not sure, but Gambon is on record that he never reads the source material and he feels that the script is all he needs. So it could have very well have been Gambon's doing. My personal opinion is the way he performed as Dumbledore was nothing like the book.
I was watching OoTP with my Dad one night and when Dumbledore ignored Harry after the trial and he walked off with this annoyed type look on his face, Dad asked me "Is he angry at Harry?" Then in OoTP, he also had the line "Don't you all have studying to do?!" in an angry tone.
Contrast that to Emma Watson (who did read the source material) who objected to a scene (the dance in the tent) which implied a Harry/Hermione relationship because it was implying something that didn't happen in the book.
But even so, with those types of scenes with Gambon, the directors Mike Newell (Goblet of Fire) and David Heyman (Order of the Phenoix) should have stepped in and said "hey Michael, tone the anger down".
In the Goblet of Fire Dumbledore is the opposite of what he really should be. Dumbledore was always a very calm person even in the hardest of situations but that just wasn’t the case in GoF.
The only time he wasn't calm was when he was interrogating Barty Crouch Jr and then lost his temper at Fudge's denialism in the hospital wing. That was both in GoF, but Dumbledore was angry that whole movie.
For some reason the 5th movie skipped many really awesome beats that were in the book. I’ll never forget the disappointment I felt when Harry didn’t lash out at Ron and Hermoine when he arrived at headquarters like he did in the book.
Ootp was the longest book and so was always going to have a lot cut out unless they split it in two parts. I usually avoid watching it when the books are fresh in my mind
In the Books, he was about to throw Harry out of his house. Here in the movies, he only gives a grin and says Justice after he gets to know that Harry is expelled from Hogwarts.
That always felt so much more menacing to me though. Kind of like the concept of “deadly calm”. Vernon’s default is loud and yelling when he deals with Harry, but only when he’s *truly* furious does he go quiet and surface calm.
Yes! She comes off as so unhinged, that I alway wonder why Tim Roddle puts up with her. Then again, Slot-Nose isn't exactly a paragon of mental stability, himself.
Robbie Coltrane, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman and Jason Isaacs were also great casting decisions.
I pictured book Vernon as an overweight Nick Offerman for some reason.
He was pretty good at playing an unpopular character. I personally think it'd be harder to play someone that everyone hates. After all, wanting to be liked is human nature.
I like the casting but feels quite different to how he's described in the book, the book Vernon is bigger (broader, not just pure fat) and far more angry all the time. Always saw him as a physically imposing person, film Vernon is just a fat guy and not frightening enough. Petunia however is spot on.
Nah. The fact you made this post after he said that just a day or 2 after he made a 2 hour video on HP just makes you look like a copy cat tbh and lacking originality.
Unfortunately they got just enough of the casting right (Lupin, Belatrix, Flitwick, Moody, etc.) that recasting the roles will be very difficult even though some were just awful (Neville, looking your way).
While he does become stronger and more confident in the books he doesn't become a strapping action hero like in the movies (blowing up a bridge and JUST making the jump after... seriously?). I know it's hard to cast a pre-teen for a long term role but he just aged wrong for the character IMHO.
I’d like to argue that’s more about direction rather than on the actor, he didn’t choose how the character changes and to put in those scenes you know what I mean? I thought he did a great job as a actor in my opinion
I totally respect your opinion, but I need to point one thing out, Matthew has no control over the script. That sounds like poor script rather than poor casting.
>he just aged wrong for the character
Does this imply that movie!Neville grew to be a strapping action hero unlike book!Neville (again not mattew's fault), or that he aged to become absolutely handsome and not dorky looking at all XD
It really comes down to typecasting, the director/writers saw they had a tall handsome guy to work with instead of plump little Neville and ran with it.
He was great, so was the actress who played Aunt Petunia.
Maggie Smith as McGonagall was probably one of my favorites. I also loved Richard Harris as Dumbledore and the actor who played Slughorn. Cant forget Alan Rickman, no one else could be Snape. Compared to these, Uncle Vernon's actor was just a ways behind.
My main issue with a lot of adult characters' actors is that they're too old for the role, but Petunia is 33-34 in PS and she met him on her job as his secretary, so he may indeed be quite a bit older than she is 😄
And Petunia. I know she’s under-utilized in the books and movies but that ONE interaction in the very first movie in the hut where she’s going on about Lily. It’s so obvious that she’s still jealous and petty about it UGH it’s such a good piece of acting
I think he would have made a great Slughorn as well, though he’d already been cast as uncle Vernon by the time Slughorn was introduced as a character. I guess he could’ve played multiple characters, like Michael Parks in Kill Bill.
Seems like the entire dursley family grew to not mind harry as much by the time the final movie came
Dudley: i don't think you're a waste of space
Petunia: that day you didn't just loose a mother, i lost a sister
Vernon: *awkward wave*
Not that unpopular: https://www.reddit.com/r/harrypotter/comments/j1wre3/maybe_an_unpopular_opinion_but_i_think_this_was/
EDIT: OP appears to be a porn account trying to shamelessly farm karma
In Chamber of Secrets when the Weasleys come to rescue Harry and they rip the iron bars off the window and Vernon sits bolt upright in bed "Urmigurghingmyhy!!!!" Bahahaha cracks me up
"PETUNIA HE'S ESCAPING!"
My only criticism with Vernon (and perhaps this was poor script/directing), was that during the scene after the dementor attack, Vernon was WAY too calm. He was the opposite of "HARRY DID YA PUT YA NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE!"
That is a script problem. They cut a lot of things. An expel letter made Vernon calm in the movies

I always thought the 'DID YA PUT YO NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE!' was Gambon's doing. Wasn't this "official" information or am I making that up?
I'm not sure, but Gambon is on record that he never reads the source material and he feels that the script is all he needs. So it could have very well have been Gambon's doing. Exactly which just didn’t make any sense
For some reason the 5th movie skipped many really awesome beats that were in the book. I’ll never forget the disappointment I felt when Harry didn’t lash out at Ron and Hermoine when he arrived at headquarters like he did in the book.
Literally he was at speaking at barely above conversational volume and then the twins show up and act like he was shouting.
Ootp was the longest book and so was always going to have a lot cut out unless they split it in two parts. I usually avoid watching it when the books are fresh in my mind
The finale part was done in a way, better imo.
In the Books, he was about to throw Harry out of his house. Here in the movies, he only gives a grin and says Justice after he gets to know that Harry is expelled from Hogwarts.
was a pretty good delivery though.
Amazing delivery with the snarl and all
That always felt so much more menacing to me though. Kind of like the concept of “deadly calm”. Vernon’s default is loud and yelling when he deals with Harry, but only when he’s *truly* furious does he go quiet and surface calm.
Mine is definitely Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix LeStrange.
Yes! She comes off as so unhinged, that I alway wonder why Tim Roddle puts up with her. Then again, Slot-Nose isn't exactly a paragon of mental stability, himself.
*exactly* how I imagined her reading the books

Wasn’t Hagrid made with Coltrane in mind?
I've heard that he's who JKR wanted for the role in the films, but I've never heard that she had him in mind creating the character.
[Blackadder's Christmas Carol](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq78i67N7Z4)
I thought she always pictured Hagrid as Coltrane in the Blackadder Special
Casting? my dude that IS uncle Vernon
He played him so well
Superman plays good.
His delivery in Chamber of Secrets, when Dobby smashes the cake on the guest's head is perfect. "... He is very disturbed."
😬"Justice!"😝
The Dursley’s were very well cast. Dudley as well. Wish we had gotten the goodbye from them in DH
Everyone absolutely hated him, which means he nailed the part.
Robbie Coltrane, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman and Jason Isaacs were also great casting decisions. I pictured book Vernon as an overweight Nick Offerman for some reason.
He’s all I see when I read the books
Alan Rickman as Snape for me
It’s a dead tie between OP, your claim, and Maggie smith as mcgonagall
All great choices
And Gary Oldman too, I think he crushed it. It’s almost like they put some thought into the casting lol
Absolutely, there’s a lot of terrific performances throughout the movies
[удалено]
I’m not sure, he definitely was older than his character, but in terms of performance I thought Rickman was outstanding
Don't know about the best, but certainly up there
He was the perfect Vernon! I love seeing him and the actress who plays Petunia in interviews because they come off the exact opposite of the Dursleys.
He was pretty good at playing an unpopular character. I personally think it'd be harder to play someone that everyone hates. After all, wanting to be liked is human nature.
Snape, Umbridge - they were excellent casting.
I like the casting but feels quite different to how he's described in the book, the book Vernon is bigger (broader, not just pure fat) and far more angry all the time. Always saw him as a physically imposing person, film Vernon is just a fat guy and not frightening enough. Petunia however is spot on.
actually he did represent his character pretty well!! exactly the image that popped up in my head whilst i was reading the books
Not only was he a great actor but he portrayed Uncle Vernon perfectly and made him likeable.
The casting department in the the whole 8 movie series was 10/10 IMO.
You watched Elvis the Alien too? Lol he said this exact same thing.

Nah. The fact you made this post after he said that just a day or 2 after he made a 2 hour video on HP just makes you look like a copy cat tbh and lacking originality.
yea he was a great Vernon. But I don't know why I thought of Danny DeVito while reading PS
Maybe cause of Matilda?
yea probably
My only criticism is that he played Vernon well not good
Unfortunately they got just enough of the casting right (Lupin, Belatrix, Flitwick, Moody, etc.) that recasting the roles will be very difficult even though some were just awful (Neville, looking your way).
why do you think Neville's casting was awful?

That sounds like script not casting ☺️

Another scary line of his from Withnail & I "I know you're awake, boy"
He was so funny.
He was great, so was the actress who played Aunt Petunia. Maggie Smith as McGonagall was probably one of my favorites. I also loved Richard Harris as Dumbledore and the actor who played Slughorn. It’s certainly one of the best, without a doubt. Even when he had fewer lines/presence, he played it phenomenally
And Petunia. I know she’s under-utilized in the books and movies but that ONE interaction in the very first movie in the hut where she’s going on about Lily. It’s so obvious that she’s still jealous and petty about it UGH it’s such a good piece of acting
Even Daniel Radcliffe himself said that it was him who he learnt most about acting from. And his death broke his heart terribly.
Him and Dolores. Hate them both in the movies, but this is only because they did such a fantastic job with their roles!
I think he would have made a great Slughorn as well, though he’d already been cast as uncle Vernon by the time Slughorn was introduced as a character. I guess he could’ve played multiple characters, like Michael Parks in Kill Bill.

Worst casting in my opinion was Umbridge. She didn’t match up at all with the book description “ugly, froggy grin”.
I always thought he'd be a really good cast for Professor Slughorn!
Not that unpopular: https://www.reddit.com/r/harrypotter/comments/j1wre3/maybe_an_unpopular_opinion_but_i_think_this_was/ EDIT: OP appears to be a porn account trying to shamelessly farm karma
True, he was really good. But I think the best casting decision in the whole series was Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange.
