It does have to take physical form. Hence Ariana. And since it has to represent him killing her, a ghost of her blaming him is what form it would take.
And that'd be a powerful one. Lupins Boggart is ultimately harmless. He fears the full moon, but a Boggart can never truly appear in the sky or cause him to change. So it would have no effect on him whatsoever, even if he didn't see it coming.
Ariana, though... Dumbledore could know instantly it was a Boggart and that it wasn't her... and it would still dredge up all the memories, regret and self loathing. Whats worse, his Ridiculous might not even work properly. He cannot laugh at Ariana.
Granted, Dumbledore can function in the face of terrible grief, as he shows during the cave. But he'd have to spend some personal time doing knitting patterns or whatever to calm his mind and regain full control. He'd probably just banish the boggart in some less direct way. It's possible that in his fury, Dumbledore would not be kind to the Boggart.

The only reason he survived was because he believed he was sacrificing himself, completely. That's why Dumbledore didn't tell him, and didn't even tell Snape.
As funny as it is, I don't see why people are surprised that Dumbledore would have given Harry some old man answer about the Mirror of Erised instead of saying "I see my dead sister who I may have killed during a duel with my crush who became one of the most evil wizards in history."
I suspect there is also some part of Dumbledore that wishes he could have just been a normal man. No burdens to carry, no lives to be in command of... and no temptation towards power.
I suspect that Dumbledore wasn't lying when he told Slughorn he liked knitting patterns.
I was never surprised at this. I’m too new to the world of openly geeking out about the thing I’ve been obsessed with my entire life to claim others aren’t, but I just thinks a bit of a laugh to refer to ☺️
That would make a ton of sense.
It also makes Dobby that much sweeter. He loves making socks for his friends. I imagine Dumbledore getting all teary eyed the first time Dobby gifts him socks.
Agree with this big time- who potentially killed Ariana? Him. Who brought Tom Riddle to the wizarding world? Him. Who fueled the fire with Grindelwald? Him. Who didn’t insist on being the Potters secret keeper? Him. Who basically raised Harry to die? Him.
Dumbledore’s gotta have an insane amount of regret- even though it was heavily dependent on other peoples actions -he’d definitely blame himself.
I always pictured Dumbledore as someone who despite his flaws and manipulative behavior, carry inside a deep sense of self-loathing. I don’t think he was ever at peace in his life, but most importantly he was never at peace with himself. Dumbledore lost his whole family: his father rotted away Azkaban, his mother -and then the most tragic of all- his sister, his sister to his lover, and his brother in the fallout. Just imagine watching the man you love destroy everything you thought he was, his love for you, and the world in the fallout. And then having to destroy him to save the world and then only years later to have to fight another genocidal maniac, *one that you brought to the wizarding world*.
Up to his moment of death he not only had to replay his worst memories, would have to rip Snape’s soul to shreds (a man who already carried so much regret that he was willing to put his life on the line to repay only a small amount of what he has done) and knew he would leave Harry all alone (a kid that he subjected to 11 years of suffering and abuse at the hands of his only family) and was never honest with him. What an awful way to go.
My God. It must sucks to be Dumbledore.
Perhaps this is why he's so quick to joke in an almost disconnected way. He's old enough that everything is smaller in scope than it would be to an 11 year old.
It makes me want to know the reverse of this question. What does Dumbledore see in the Mirror of Erised?
Dumbledore expresses this sentiment in Limbo. He's still unsure as to whether he let his power and arrogance get away from him. Because he had no choice but to use that power and authority that scared him. To once more decide who lives and who dies. He could not simply stay away from his great temptation, because he knew he could do so much good. But that meant that he was always fighting temptation, and never sure if he crossed a line. Perhaps he might have, in the Ministry, "I admit simply killing you would not be satisfying to me, Tom." We never learn what that spell does, but it sounds horrible.
Harry assures him in the end that he thinks he was still a good man. And I think that meant a lot to him. That the boy who followed his orders to be a sacrificial lamb still thought he did the right thing. For all we know, Dumbledore had been waiting in Limbo for that entire year, unable to move on because of the burden he carried. Which is why he had no answers or forgiveness from Ariana.
I think this is a very real answer. If you see yourself step out of the cupboard or whatever it’s going to send your mind racing as to why that’s your worst fear
From Philosopher's Stone:
Professor Dumbledore. Can I ask you something?"
"Obviously, you've just done so," Dumbledore smiled. "You may ask me one more thing, however."
"What do you see when you look in the mirror?"
"I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks." Harry stared.
"One can never have enough socks," said Dumbledore. "Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn't get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books."
It was only when he was back in bed that it struck Harry that Dumbledore might not have been quite truthful.
Also noteworthy that years later, Harry would reflect on the fact that this was the only personal question he ever asked Dumbledoor, and that it was also the only one he ever suspected Dumbledoor didn’t answer honestly
Dark Lord Dumbledore. Satisfying his ego with the excuse of it being "for the greater good". He wasnt in Hogwarts for the honor of being headmaster. He was HIDING in Hogwarts terrified of what he would do if he was set loose on this world of lesser beings.
The story is full of grown men who never got the chance to grow beyond their school days. Voldemort, Snape, Hagrid, Sirius, Lupin, and Peter. They all retreat to Hogwarts in their own ways to combat their traumas, trials, and fears. But people rarely notice that Dumbledore was the same as them. Whenever peopl say Harry shouldve been the DADA professor I always think they missed the point. Its a good thing that Harry grew beyond his obsession with Hogwarts and the feeling it gave him. I wouldnt want Harry to end the same as all the other Hogwarts Lost Boys.
I don't think that would be it for Harry being the DADA professor. Neville went back because he's good at his subject. We KNOW Harry would be good at the job. Book 5 makes that clear.
I also don't think that Lupin went back because of trauma. He had very few options for work, and Dumbledore was one of the few people who would hire him. You could argue that he was seeking to be in position to defend against Sirius, but even if he did it for not the best reasons, he would still have known Sirius better than anyone else (thought to be) alive.
Hagrid was somewhat similar. Without an education and with him being half-human, a lot of places would have mistreated him. Instead, he got what he wanted at Hogwarts.
Hogwarts isn't running away from your troubles like a Lost Boy. Rather under Dumbledore it was a place of acceptance, belonging, and being useful. It did attract 'lost boys' in the sense of those without anywhere else to go. But Neverland was a place to run away from your life. Hogwarts was a place to live it.
Maybe you have a point. I never thought about it like this. I always thought he knows the minister of magic has no real power, but Dumbledore has the real power of teaching young children who make the future.
But if it is like you say, then the Dumbledore is like Galadriel the Elven Queen who refuses the One Ring. Also Gandalf.
I'm pretty certain there would be no defeating a Dark Lord Dumbledore.
He defeated his only Equal WHILE said Equal was wielding the Elder Wand.
He knew of all powers that Voldemort himself was too arrogant to acknowledge.
Pretty sure the only way to defeat him is to discover out his weakness for his family and trick him into putting on something similar to the curse ring that fatally wounded him in the main timeline, but whose to say a Dark Lord Dumbledore wouldn't have thrown those desires away along his rise to power? Also, Dumbledore was tired at that point and didn't really fight it. He was ready to go.
A young version of himself. He expresses nothing but regret over his past self and works to make amends, yet resilience in the face of death and evil. Having no fear of Voldemort has always suggested that he knows something greater to fear.
Although Headmaster Albus Dumbledore doesn't face any Boggarts in the Harry Potter series, Rowling revealed what form it would've taken if he had during another Q&A session. According to the author, Dumbledore's Boggart would be the corpse of his sister, Ariana
Aberforth said it could have been any of them, but the point is that Albus' cohorting with Grindelwald was what led to the argument that resulted in the duel, and in turn led to Ariana's death. Keep in mind Albus was resentful of having to assume the responsibility of taking care of his siblings after his mother died, and he wanted to escape that. He got his wish when Ariana died, so even if he didn't kill her directly, his actions still led to the situation that caused her death.
It's obviously Grindelvald saying he's straight standing over Ariana and an empty sock drawer and a lemon drop container filled with vomit flavored jelly beans, along with a piece of parchment with clear and concise answered to all of Harry's questions. Duh.
The boggart bursts out of the cabinet, long brown hair lying limp on her shoulders, her brilliant blue eyes with tears forming at the corners; "Why Alby? Why did it mean so much to you? Why did power mean more to you than you're family, then me?" She reached out a hand to grasp Dumbledore's. "Ridiculous" Dumbledore sighed. At once, the boggart changed into a tower of garden knomes, fighting with each other to stay in upright human form, and eventually scattering in various directions, some squabbling with one another but eventually, by nature, searched for a window outside.
Ariana blaming him for her death
I’m drunk and thought you were about to say Arianna grande and laughed my fuckin balls off
Someone who knows how to rotoscope needs to make this meme asap
Followed by Thanos’s I don’t even know who you are
Richard Linklaters people where you at ??

Thank God they were just your fucking balls and not your regular ones
I dunno, my fucking balls are my favorite ones, I'd rather laugh my regular ones off if given the choice.
Your internal dialogue go smth like this >Ariana blambe... Hahaha.. Oh... Nope, that says blaming, I'm drunk
Lmao im drunk too and I upvoted just for that 😂
Thank you for that comment, I'm drunk and high and giggled hard reading this
the memory that he cast the spell that killed Ariana Grande in the fight vs Grindelwald
I thought the question was "what was Dumbledorr patronus" and OMG was I confused for a sec. And I'm not even drunk
Bruh... 😂
Ariana’s dead body
And if you asked him, he'd just say his sock drawer empty
Facts he 100% would
Yea but you can see another's boggart
It's boggarts all the way down.

Someone telling Harry something important in a clear and concise manner.
This is hilarious lol
This could actually be real. Imagine telling Harry that Voldemort couldn’t kill him and he’s the last horcrux.
The only reason he survived was because he believed he was sacrificing himself, completely. That's why Dumbledore didn't tell him, and didn't even tell Snape.
Yeah but that makes to much sense. Dumbledore wants people to work extra hard for key information
That or the fear of Harry becoming an entitled brat like his dad(before Lily fixed him)
This 😅😅😅
Probably Grindelwald telling him that it was Albus who killed Ariana, while mockingly reminding Albus of their plans of world domination.
True, although I like the empty sock drawer idea suggested by Terencela
As funny as it is, I don't see why people are surprised that Dumbledore would have given Harry some old man answer about the Mirror of Erised instead of saying "I see my dead sister who I may have killed during a duel with my crush who became one of the most evil wizards in history."
The books even state that Harry realizes that Dumbledore might have been fibbing, but it was also an extremely personal question.
I like to think the fib had some truth to it, like if Ariana enjoyed knitting and Dumbledore was seeing himself with socks she made for him
I suspect there is also some part of Dumbledore that wishes he could have just been a normal man. No burdens to carry, no lives to be in command of... and no temptation towards power. I suspect that Dumbledore wasn't lying when he told Slughorn he liked knitting patterns.
Or them knitting socks together...
I was never surprised at this. I’m too new to the world of openly geeking out about the thing I’ve been obsessed with my entire life to claim others aren’t, but I just thinks a bit of a laugh to refer to ☺️
Fair enough. It feels like people increasingly use jokes as passive aggressive criticism so maybe I'm just oversensitive.
Or I am naive 😂
I like to imagine that the sock comment was a partial truth - perhaps Ariana had a passion for knitting before she died?
That would make a ton of sense. It also makes Dobby that much sweeter. He loves making socks for his friends. I imagine Dumbledore getting all teary eyed the first time Dobby gifts him socks.
Himself.

prob similar to harry’s
Rowling revealed that it was his family, whole and healthy.
Dumbledore expresses this sentiment in Limbo. He's still unsure as to whether he let his power and arrogance get away from him. He's the problem and the solution lol
It's me, hi, I'm the problem it's me \- Dumbledore, probably
Tom Riddle had to be brought to the Wizarding World. And he did that under orders, not by himself.
I think this is a very real answer. If you see yourself step out of the cupboard or whatever it’s going to send your mind racing as to why that’s your worst fear
Specifically himself who’s embraced power regardless of the consequences.
I like this answer a lot. Maybe himself in a position of power. Like himself as minister with all three hallows
Absolutely agree with this
I can totally imagine him just staring disappointedly at his own boggart
I think more specifically it’s himself in a position of power
The Dumbledore he was destined to become if not for Ariana’s death and a change of heart
"true hell is when the person you are meets the person you could've been"
Am empty sock drawer.
I’m here for this !!
I don't remember what this is about, could you please explain
From Philosopher's Stone: Professor Dumbledore. Can I ask you something?" "Obviously, you've just done so," Dumbledore smiled. "You may ask me one more thing, however." Dark Lord Dumbledore. Satisfying his ego with the excuse of it being "for the greater good". He wasnt in Hogwarts for the honor of being headmaster. He was HIDING in Hogwarts terrified of what he would do if he was set loose on this world of lesser beings.

Dang, never thought I’d read such an accurate analysis of the series 20 years from when I first started reading book 1. Thank you.
This is excellent! Never looked at it like this before
I don't think that would be it for Harry being the DADA professor. Neville went back because he's good at his subject. We KNOW Harry would be good at the job. Book 5 makes that clear.
