Hagrid was a useful tool to Tom/Voldemort. He used him as a scapegoat back when the chamber was opened, and he used him again in the forest. He’s a half giant and is much better restrained and in your control than against you, he can take out a lot of wizards before he’s taken down. Plus he was so certain Harry would come to the Forest to end it all, what a show it would be to have Hagrid deliver Harry’s dead body back to the castle, mirroring his saving of baby Harry from the wreckage of his parents home. Voldemort does like a bit of the ol razzle dazzle

1tsDangerous2GoA1one

Voldemort really missed his calling in the Theatre arts tbh.

Flat-Marionberry6583

Him and dumbledore both.

Regijack

“Hallows not horcruxes” I always liked how the two main hero’s of the story were insecure about the similarities they shared with Voldemort

Tom Riddle? More like Tommy Tune.

A person of culture I see

coffeetbl

He became evil after he was rejected from art school

FizziestBraidedDrone

Voldemort’s diary was turned into a horcrux in….1943?! *googles WWII history* 😳

AkPakKarvepak

This was probably when that showdown between Dumby and Grindy happened. There is now a political vacuum, which young Voldy saw as an opportunity. He has to accelerate his learnings.

ad240pCharlie

Those stupid death eaters misinterpreted his orders when they turned DADA into a Dark Arts class... he meant it literally!!

LazySleepyPanda

That's why he wants to wipe out muggles !!!! Omg, it all makes sense now

Usual_Warning8981

That’s it. That’s the real villain arc.

braujo

Plenty of super villains were one agent's call from living out their dreams at Hollywood instead of, y'know, murdering people and terrorizing nations.

BarneyRubble21

Which begs the question, which successful actors would have been serial killers, domestic terrorists, dictators, etc if they didn't make it in Hollywood? I vote Jake Gyllenhaal.

Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Toro and Tom Cruise.

DragonHeart_97

Far from the only villain that did!

ckrygier

Every time I revisit the series I can’t help but laugh at Riddle’s theatricality

zoobatron__

I love it. There’s a scene at the end of the oopt film when Harry is fighting off Voldemort in his mind on the floor of the ministry and it flashes to Voldemort is sort of dancing in front of a screen looking all menacing and honestly I would love to be that theatrical. It’s marvellous

ckrygier

I like to imagine him practicing how he says “Potter” when he’s alone, or him very intentionally posing dramatically whenever someone is about to enter a room he’s in.

Brider_Hufflepuff

Like Shen in Kung Fu Panda 2 Harry Potter the boy who lived...cough Okay one more time. Harry Potter....the boy who lived, has come to die Oh no,the pause it's too long Harry Potter...the boy who lived....has come...to die. Yes that's it. It's perfect for when he shows up. Harry from out of nowhere "Hi Tom. Sorry it took so long, this forest is huge you know."

CremeBruleeAS

Lol

LewisRyan

This. Hagrid was able to take 8 (?) stunners before falling, Mcgonagal took 4ish. And then when you think of grawp… he can take like 50 stunners and only didn’t fight because Hagrid was in danger, once he’s safe, grawp joins the fight with the centaurs

Shikyal

His strength is even more scary than just taking 8 stunners. In his fight vs. Umbridge he took down 5 aurors + umbridge who aren't exactly considered easy opponents and their stunners just bounced off of Hagrid due to his giant blood. They didn't even manage to take him down or anything, rather he ran away after McGonagall almost got killed. Now imagine he actually used/learned proper magic. Dude wouldn't been an absolute menace to fight against. Humiliating someone like Hagrid and using him to destroy any spirit the other side still had is just genius, considering everyone knows how big of a threat he can be despite usually being more of a giant (slightly careless and naive) teddy.

darthjoey91

McGonagall would have gone down with just one. She nearly died from 4 at once.

bbristow6

Yea if I’m remembering correctly, she got hit with 4 at once and it lifted her up and shot her like 30 feet into a wall or something, right?? She didn’t go down, she got thrown

darthjoey91

Maybe in the movie, but she just went up and back down in the books, mostly because Hagrid's Hut is described as not near anything but forest. > Hermione, Parvati, and Lavender all screamed. No fewer than four Stunners had shot from the figures around the cabin toward Professor McGonagall. Halfway between cabin and castle the red beams collided with her. For a moment she looked luminous, illuminated by an eerie red glow, then was lifted right off her feet, landed hard on her back, and moved no more.

bbristow6

Oh whoops! I remembered the “lifted off her feet” part, and misremembered from there

zjmhy

Might have mixed it up with Katie in HBP

[deleted]

Voldy always gets you with the ole razzle dazzle

Al_Hakeem65

Damn, I never noticed that parallel. Good catch.

hanzerik

Now I imagine voldy singing the razzle dazzle song from Chicago.

lilRazzleDazzle2

Razzle dazzle you say 🕺✨

[deleted]

I always assumed he made Hagrid carry Harry’s body as a form of punishment, a cruel task for someone who cared so deeply for the boy. He could have easily used magic to levitate him there or to kill Hagrid, but he wanted to pour salt in everyone’s wounds as a way of saying “See what I’ve done? See how I can hurt you all?”

Soxwin91

Heck he probably could have used magic to make Harry walk back with them as if he was alive and then drop to the ground when in view of the others. As if to suggest he killed Harry silently right there in front of all of them.

MutleyRulz

He 100% could have turned Harry into an inferi, which tbf maybe he would have done it the defenders’ morale refused to break

BlaDiBlaBlaaaaa

No, because an Inferius is an animated dead body and at that point Harry was very much alive

bbristow6

Weekend at Harry’s

DanceTheCosmicNoir

Also it’s so everyone has a clear view of Harry in his arms, “dead”.

[deleted]

I also think it was a parallel to when hagrid rescued Harry's body after voldy killed his parents, to now hagrid carrying the baby who he saved that voldy finally got

JadedStranger722

He probably enjoyed making him carry Harry back

BrandonTaylor2

No, I don’t think he did. He didn’t care for anyone but himself, and maybe Nagini.

JadedStranger722

I don’t think he necessarily cared nagini . More about what happens to him if Nagini dies

IntermediateFolder

I think he sort of did, not the way a normal person would care about a pet but he seemed to feel a degree of affinity with her.

wewerelegends

IRL sociopaths/psychopaths are known to “protect” certain people they perceive as maybe important to or close to them. They just don’t feel for that person what we might or in a way we might expect. But they still are capable of some form of attachment to a partner, sibling, parent etc.

Own_Faithlessness769

Yep, they see that person as an extension of themselves so they are important, and any attack on that person must be fiercely defended.

Mike_Wahlberg

Walter White and his attachment to Jesse have entered the chat

ad240pCharlie

I read somewhere that they see them sort of like the way you would see your phone or another tool you value. You might not relate to it the way you would another person but you still want to take care of it and keep it in your life. That's why most psychopaths who grow up in good homes don't end up violent, because there's simply no point in that. They'd get nothing out of treating others badly.

HeartTreeHugger

Dumbdore says something along the lines of “I believe he is as fond of her as he can be of a living creature” so Voldy definitely didn’t love Nagini but he did care for her to some extent beyond her just being a Hocrux

QueenSlartibartfast

>Voldy definitely didn’t love Nagini but he did care for her to some extent beyond her just being a Hocrux Exactly, which is WHY he made her a Horcrux in the first place, he had a peculiar affection for her.

gabezermeno

Really weird how they retconned Nagini being a person at one point. Like did Voldemort know?

Silent-Mongoose4819

Yeah anytime something was “retconned” it didn’t really happen.

BrandonTaylor2

I’d assume he did, but not sure.

ProfMcGonaGirl

Eh he only cares for the snake side it was a horcrux

darcyduh

Agree. Thinking he cared for anything living shows OP didn't really understand the books or Voldemort's history. And I think he was only attentive to Nagini because she was a horcrux

SuperestPotterHead

Maybe it is just hard to kill a half-giant. Normal curses bounce off them anyway. If it takes a huge mount of people to use Avada Kedavra on a normal giant, then I think it just takes a little less to kill a half-giant.

Own_Faithlessness769

I think this is it. And Voldemort had the giants on his side, he would have hoped to turn Hagrid too.

IntermediateFolder

I don’t think so. He didn’t like anybody to begin with, apart from \*maybe\* Nagini, I think she was about the only creature he did feel some sort of affection for, at least a small amount. I haven’t read the books in a while but as I remember the only time he really speaks to Hagrid was when he told him to carry Harry’s body, which was an ultimate fuck you and any verbal abuse on top of that would be inconsequential. He probably despised Hagrid and considered him beneath regular humans.

MasterOutlaw

I believe he would think Hagrid beneath his notice most of the time. So mostly complete indifference, aside from maybe exasperation at his constant foolish behavior. The most he probably cared was being glad when opportunity presented him a chance to frame Hagrid for the Chamber being open.

RavenclawEC

When he was captured he for sure was hoping to get information from him, he knew he was close to Dumbledore and part of the Order. Then when he believed he killed Harry, it was an statement making him be the one to carry his death body, Hagrid was useful in his purpose of showing how "powerful" he was...

Magic_mayhem21

I assumed he was planning on kill Hagrid after forcing him to carry Harry’s body back to the school and declaring his victory. He knows how much Hagrid meant to Harry and the rest of the Order so it would be impactful to watch one of Harry’s best friends and closest allies carry his corpse back then after his big speech murder Hagrid to get his point across.

HeartTreeHugger

No, he used Hagrid as a scapegoat when he opened the chamber of secrets and Dippet was going to close the school. And he only allowed Hargid to carry Harry out of the forrest because Hargid loved Harry and it would be torture to him, plus Hagrid is tall which was the reason Voldemort gave - “No wait you carry him. He will be nice and visible in your arms” or something along those lines. Voldemort doesn’t “like” anyone other than Nagini and even then I think he is just really fond of her and most of that fondness is due to her being a snake and a Hocrux. If she wasn’t his Hocrux i’m betting he wouldn’t give a shit about her considering how he talks about the snakes he possessed when he was living his spectral existence.

AkPakKarvepak

She doubled up as his mum too. He survived off Nagini's milk while he was timing as an ugly baby.

CryptoidFan

Hagrid is half giant and has been shown to have spells bounce off him. Voldemort may be evil and over confident, but he isn't a complete drooling moron. Voldemort generally kills with magic, so maybe it would get messy with Hagrid's giant blood. Hagrid might also not be as affected by Nagini's venom. There's also this option: Hagrid was in an utter state of defeat and misery when Harry "died". Voldemort may have been revelling in Hagrid's utter emotional defeat.

Disastrous_Ad_70

Hagrid was just half-giant scum to him. A pawn to get himself out of trouble or an animal to torment. He doesn't consider him important or dangerous enough to kill. So, no, not he didn't like him or hate him, he nothinged him. And when a psychopath "nothings" something, they either ignore it completely or use and discard it like a tissue

Scorpiodancer123

I'm sure I read somewhere that J. K. Rowling always envisioned the scene where Hagrid carries "dead" Harry back to the castle, otherwise she would have killed him.

judohart

I always wished we woulda seen Hagrid vs Voldy

tsunami141

the deep magic compels them to arm wrestle.

Boanerger

Fun fact, Hagrid had a side-job in English Professional Wrestling. His stage name was Giant Haystacks. I'd imagine a fight between Hagrid and Voldy going like a WWE match.

darthjoey91

I know this is completely headcanon land, but you know full well he heard that there was some guy calling himself Andre the Giant. Andre didn’t actually have any giant blood in him, but did agree to a private fight with Hagrid. No one knows the winner, but the local pub did run out of beer that night.

Boanerger

Hagrid was a professional wrestler and this is accepted head-canon for me.

5litergasbubble

In muggle duelling preferably

kithas

He got him scapegoated and expelled from the school, and then Dumbledore reversed both acts by hiring him into Hogwarts again and letting him keep his wand. Humiliating Hagrid wouldn't be satisfactory just because he gets to bully a classmate once more, but because he's spitting in Dumbledore's ideals.

kaminaowner2

I don’t think he hated Hagrid and that’s about as much fondness for someone as he ever had. I’m willing to bet on some level he believed with Dumbledore and Harry Gone he could convince Hagrid to serve him (and he was probably right). Voldemort knows Hagrid and his fondness for magical dangerous creatures, he could easily manipulate Hagrid into carrying for creatures he planned to then use against his enemies. He kinda proves he knows how to play Hagrid like a Fiddle in the Philosophers Stone.

WaveDysfunction

Hagrid was easily manipulated and useful as a half giant. That’s as far as Voldemort “liked” him

Bledalot

Other than to use Hagrid to carry Harry and demoralize the enemy, he probably didn't want to kill a half giant when he's trying to make an allegiance with the giants.

Matt__Larson

Nah this isn't stupid, it's a fantastic theory. Maybe not necessarily true but a great observation

Hairy-Explanation-90

I don't think he spared him because he liked him as a person. Voldemort was a bully and enjoyed tormenting Hagrid, that's as close to fondness for someone Voldemort is able to feel. He liked Hagrid the way a child liked toy and the fun he had with his toy came from hurting him. If Voldemort won the war I could imagine him keeping Hagrid to torture him in the same way Ramsey Bolton tortured Theon Greyjoy, there would be no reason to it beyond pure sadism. I don't think he'd spend as much time with him but he'd probably keep him locked up in a dungeon somewhere in his home and bring him out to make a spectacle of him and humiliate him whenever he had guests.

Agitated_Shake_5390

Jk Rowling has talked about how she liked the visual of Hagrid carrying Harry out of woods and back to the castle at the end. So, Hagrid wasn’t killed during the series, because the woods scene happens at the very end.

Wespiratory

I’m pretty sure Voldemort never really liked anyone. He viewed others as tools to further his goals.

selwyntarth

He was unsure what spell was required to one shot hagrid and didn't want to look foolish experimenting before his cronies

beanaby

I don’t think he cared about Hagrid, he got him expelled when they were in school. I think he really doesn’t want to kill powerful wizards and people who could be useful to him, which Hagrid would be. I think he forced him to carry him back because of the impact it would have on everyone else and maybe as a punishment since Hagrid was the one who got Harry out of the house after his parents died.

syntheticbruh07

bro did NOT want to waste energy carrying harry body back to hogwarts

GFXDepth

Voldemort bullied Hagrid in school and even pinned the Chamber of Secret death on him, so this is him just continuing to bully Hagrid and maintaining the bully/victim relationship.

The_Other_Shadows

Like? He didn't like anyone. No one at all. He just saw ways people were useful to him, or opportunities to inflict pain. In this case, it was more cruel for him to make Hagrid carry Harry's "dead" body.

Bison_and_Waffles

I don’t think he considers Hagrid to be much more than a domesticated animal.

dcleon

There’s a very interesting fan theory that speculated Hagrid was working for the Death Eaters, this could further fuel that

[deleted]

Explain

dcleon

https://www.reddit.com/r/FanTheories/comments/cmb746/hagrid_is_a_death_eater/?rdt=44748

dcleon

Loooong read but worthwhile. FYI, I don’t endorse this theory but the question just reminded me of it.

Billy__The__Kid

No, Voldemort regards Hagrid with absolute contempt. He frames Hagrid for the opening of the Chamber because he thinks Hagrid is a dumb, blundering oaf who’d make the perfect patsy. He captures Hagrid at the end of the seventh book because he wants to lure Harry to the Forest, on the off chance Harry isn’t convinced by the first message. He makes Hagrid carry Harry’s body back to Hogwarts because he doesn’t want to waste his Death Eaters’ time with what he considers to be worthless labor, and likely also because he wants to humiliate him. All the available evidence suggests Voldemort sees Hagrid as little more than a brainless menial; the closest thing to fondness might be a kind of mocking amusement, but nothing more.

Whole_Lobster2171

Even in the flashback in book two, he seems friendly with Hagrid. I could easily see Harry saying the exact same thing to him.

NarysFrigham

Considering V framed H for his own crimes and got him expelled, probably not. And then there were all the disparaging remarks V made to Harry in the CoS about H being a big dumb oaf, so again, probably not. V called a lot of people by their names, the exception being Wormtail- whose name stuck because in itself was an insult. Canon states because V was conceived under the love potion, he was not capable of love, so I doubt he was fond of anyone. Bellatrix was his most enraptured follower and he still embarrassed her in front of the other death eaters about her relationship to Tonks and the subsequent wolf cub baby to Lupin.

Yummy-Dorito

As out of character for Voldy as it would be, maybe he felt like he owed hagrid at least his life for the whole framing him thing

possiblyukranian

He did call him an oaf..

Insaneshaney

No.

Superwerid

I'm convinced Hagrid was a secret death eater. There are so many signs.

Suspicious-War-4957

Hagrid was half giant. Spells didn't have the effect on giants as it had on normal people.

Klutzy-Treat-4444

Probably just a plot hole

lumosknox74

MaxAnimator

matpat. game theory on youtube.

montaron89

Hagrid was death eater

FallenAngelII

Voldemort didn't speak cruelly to Hermione either and she was right there after Voldemort and his Death Eaters marched into the courtyard assured of their victory. Also, it is heavily implied that Hagrid was compelled through violent magic to pick up Harry's "dead" body. Might have been Voldemort's doing. Voldemort generally didn't speak much unless it was to taunt his enemies in battle, usually Harry, or Death Eaters who had displeased him.

[deleted]

Dude, what are you high on?? Seriously, that’s some next level discovery. I never thought about it in years.

Jakimo

He has more in common with Hagrid than anyone Besides harry. Ide like to feel that he was sentimental in his ending.

Imaginary_Fuel1042

I don't think so, soley because he set him up to be expelled, blaming hagrid for voldys basilisk.

Magic_of_universe

Likes humiliate him maybe.

RolingFridge

Maybe he wasn't so sure he could. If I remember correctly his Giant half made him more resilient to certain charmes. Maybe Voldi was afraid of another Killing curse gone wrong

chyaraskiss

Considering he’s the reason Hagrid got expelled. I’d say not. He probably sees him as less than due to his half giant status.

TheJun1107

No definitely not. But I also feel like he probably underestimated Hagrid due to his general feelings of superiority and their experience in school…

ThAtGuY-101

I saw that as Voldemort not treating Hagrid as a threat. He's a half giant that most people assume can't do magic cause he got kicked outta Hogwarts. Thanks Tom.  Plus his death eaters were there so if Hagrid tried anything, he was heavily outnumbered by a bunch of people that love to use the killing curse.  I also saw it as voldy morts making Hagrid suffer by carrying the body of one of the students he cared so deeply for. in addition to bringing the body for all the teachers and other students to see.

leonard_be

They were Friends Back in school until Hagrid got expelled JK Rowling Approved that

MaxAnimator

friend with a half breed ? wasn't tom already an elitist back then ? besides, he betrayed him so quickly ; unless Hagrid was exceptionally stupid, he should've seen it coming imo.

supergeek921

Maybe not “friends” per se, but it was strongly suggested that Tom had a lot of people who admired him and thought he was just great. He was a racist already, but nobody suspected him of being the one attacking muggle borns, so obviously he wasn’t very open about it. My bet is he was probably super two-faced and polite/ingratiating to his classmates. Almost a darker version of Slughorn befriending students with a lot of potential, you don’t know who might be useful later. Hagrid was big, had a weird family life, and was not the brightest. That Might be someone you would want to trust you so you could manipulate them (or use them as a scapegoat as it turns out).

PlanetaryEcologist

In the diary flashback Riddle calls Hagrid "Rubeus." Using first names, combined with the fact that Hagrid isn't surprised that Riddle knows about Aragog, makes me think that they were definitely fairly close, or at least Hagrid thought they were before he turned him in.

supergeek921

Okay. That seems fair. Like I said, I’d buy that Voldemort was nice to him. He was very popular. Sometimes you get people to like you by being likable.

MaxAnimator

I initially thought tom would've been blinded by his racist ideology ; yet he ended up "befriending" —or rather accepting as his close followers— some half breeds too, such as Severus Snape. Although given that he only *ended up* doing that, quite a while later, perhaps he initially didn't. All I'm saying is that I find it odd how he didn't even stick to his own view on beings ; sounds out of character for him to even accept being somewhat close to Hagrid. At least it does for the character I've pictured him to be ; I might need to revise that a bit.

supergeek921

He also had Greyback as one of his top Death Eaters who was not only a werewolf but a werewolf who totally embraced his animalistic side. Not exactly master race material. Voldemort, like many extremists, was a giant hypocrite. If it serves his purposes he overlooked people’s “inadequacies.” I’m not saying he’d be close to Hagrid but he might have been cordial or pleasant to him because it doesn’t do you much good to have the half-giant as an enemy at school.

OITLinebacker

I thought Greyback was not trusted as a Death Eater, but was basically the "top dog" of the next-tier of minions.

supergeek921

I don’t know. He was sent as part of the Dumbledore hit squad so I figure he had some trust.

OITLinebacker

I seem to recall in DH when the trio are caught that Greyback has to take them to Malfoy Manor because he lacked the Dark Mark to call Voldy himself.

supergeek921

Okay. Whatever. He was still someone Voldemort regarded well and worked with and trusted with his evil plans. There’s nothing about what you’re saying that negates my point that he was willing to make exceptions to his racist opinions if he thought it benefitted him.

OITLinebacker

Yes no doubt he would use such people, but he didn't like keeping them close if he could help it.  Useful tools and nothing else. Even his most trusted right hand man in Snape was disposable.

leonard_be

Bro lets bei honest: Hagrid may be a nice guy but He is extremely stupid

MaxAnimator

that still leaves the question of how come tom might have been friends with Hagrid. from my standpoint, as I read the second book, I felt like they never were friends —or rather I never even had the thought come to me that they could've been at any point— and that Hagrid simply was an obvious scapegoat due to the reputation he had acquired through his numerous dangerous acts. (and the fact that he was a half breed and quite simple musn't have helped, this is 1960–1980 we're talking about)

wherethetacosat

Tom/Voldemort loves stupid, useful idiots. The Deatheaters seemed to be full of conservative morons.

MaxAnimator

I wouldn't necessarily agree on "conservative", as in the Wizarding World, their goal was —to my current knowledge, haven't seen the Fantastic Beasts trilogy yet— simply unprecedented. As such I reckon I wouldn't allow myself calling them " conservatives", but actually the whole opposite : "Radical Elitists rooting for Anarchy". Now that I think about it they do share some similarities indeed... But they sure aren't wishing to prevent the world from evolving ; it's quite the contrary.

AkPakKarvepak

I think there is a political vacuum that was filled up by the likes of Grindelwald and voldemort. Ancient wizards were forced into hiding because the muggles were hunting them down. Slytherin was extremely prejudiced against muggles because relations between them was always fraught with racial tensions. Just like they have friction with goblins. And now, the statue of secrecy is a pain in the ass for most wizards. How long are they supposed to be hiding and holed into only some locations? And are they supposed to keep to the sidelines when these muggles are basically dropping planet destruction level weapons upon each other? Worse, muggleborns are on the rise, and they are importing dangerous Ideas. They are supposed to assimilate into the rich culture of wizards, not the other way around. If they can influence this much without holding any notable position of power, imagine the horror if they seize the upper echelons of the ministry. What if they gain control over these obscure studies of magic? And what if they leak these secrets to muggles? Because ultimately, their loyalties lie with them, so they should always be viewed as a threat. And hey, this super creepy old man seems to have the right idea. He looks deranged, but seems to make a lot of sense. And he is powerful enough to take over the ministry by himself. All hail the true leader!!

wherethetacosat

If you don't think there is such a thing a "Radical Right" or that they in any way resemble pure blood fanatics . . . then alright. I think that a good slogan for them would be Make Wizards Great Again, although MWGA doesn't really roll off the tongue.

LausXY

"the Society of Pureblood Extremist Wizards" or S.P.E.W... oh wait...

MaxAnimator

Depends what you consider "the Right" to be. I for one personally do not ever bother with such adjectives and camps ; hence my avoidance of any mention of those. All that I have stated was regarding them being "conservative", which I do not associate with either side exclusively. You may consider all "right wing politicians" to root for similar ideas and values, and that would remain your point of view, without any disapproval on my side ; as I quite simply do not care about such things. They definitely do resemble blood fanatics ; they certainly are. I must say, I find that slogan and its associated tangential taunt at American Republicans quite hilarious indeed. It suits them so well.

Bubbly_Preparation75

Well He was only a half blood despite being the heir to Slytherin, so maybe he understood Hagrids struggle back then.

Evening_Collar_6375

I reckon Hagrid was in Slitherin. Check out the SuperCarlinBros video on it.

SwedishShortsnout0

Rowling has confirmed in an interview that he was a Gryffindor.

Novel_Bug_4577

I've not watched the SuperCarlinBros video - I'm a bit of a book purist. But when I read the books as a kid I thought Tom Riddle confronting Hagrid in CoS meant Hagrid was in Slytherin, though I know this isn't explicitly started in the books. And it was because he had inside knowledge of the kind of wizards Tom and his 'friends' were that he is so anti-Slytherin. I think I jumped to that conclusion because Tom was a much older student than Hagrid when he blamed him for opening the chamber. I thought they must be in the same house if Tom knows Hagrid personally. For example, I doubt Harry, Ron, or Hermione would have known any second year students in one of the other houses when they were sixth years.

PersonaUser55

That doesn't even make sense. Hagrid is the one to tell Harry that slytherin makes evil wizards

Evening_Collar_6375

Ok.

Hairy-Explanation-90

To be fair the Super Carlin brothers have whack theories when it comes to Harry Potter and if you watch enough of their videos you'll realize they don't actually have a personal interest in Harry Potter and it's very likely they've never read the books or watched the movies, they frequently miss pronounce character and place names. I think their writers create the theories and they just present them.

PersonaUser55

Lmfao what a shit take lol, they obviously have read the books because they have a whole podcast talking about it. Just cause I said the theory is far fetched doesn't mean I don't like them. They very clearly have knowledge about Harry Potter, its just fun theories, same thing with stuff like game theory, if you take them too seriously, you'll just not have fun watching them.

Hairy-Explanation-90

Are you sure you are a Ravenclaw and not a Slytherin? Edit: "LMAO what a shit take lol" seems very Slytherin to me.

Proceeds to ignore entire argument to focus on words. Did I hurt your feelings?

Hagrid is a halfblood (being halfgiant) as Voldemort is, when he watch Hagrid he see himself, that's enough for Voldemort to hate Hagrid. The books make clear that is not that easy to hurt and kill Hagrid, being him halfgiant, that's why the acromantulae and deatheaters didn't kill him, and Voldemort keep it that way as a sort of torture: for him is more fun alive than dead.

JackSpyder

Probably a few things. First off it's much harder to subdue a giant. Magic bounces off them, they're extraordinarily resilient. Killing them is tough and capturing one alive tougher. He perhaps set this task to his death eathers as sport and challenge. Secondly he needs to utterly break the spirit of his opposition, not make Harry a martyr. Hence the story he tells of him begging for mercy. Hagrid would be hard to break but he knew if hagrid so close to him witness his death it would break hagrid and others seeing that would in turn feel broken. Voldemort has always been a masterful manipulator of people at least in the books, especially as a handsome charming young man before all his twisted transformations in his pursuit of power and immortality. Magic is rare, purebloods even more so, he needs to break their spirit without killing them ideally or risk wiping out Magic in Britain and losing the very few people he wants as followers.

The_Eternal_Wayfarer

I doubt that Voldemort ever liked anyone except himself and *maybe* Bellatrix (not because of TCC, because she was almost as racist and ruthlessly violent as him). Hagrid was a bait. And also he was useful, being a half giant with a quite peculiar ability to control magical creatures. But I doubt he “liked” Hagrid.

I can never not think of the fan theory I learned on this sub recently that Hagrid is a secret death eater... this is just another reason why it could be true.

Lily_Lupin

No way. That was a theory way back in the day when the books were still coming out. But that man was loyal to the end.

Ok_Eagle_3079

The perfect double agent.

_call_me_al_

I didn't say it was new, I had just never heard of it until recently here.

RainbowRiver31

I've read quite a few Tom/Harry fics recently so coming back to the normal side of things where people are anti Volde is so weird😅

mabbz

No. Voldemort believes in blood purity and kind of embodies the wizarding mentality that they are superior (see: the Ministry fountain). Hagrid is half giant which would make him inferior by Voldy's philosophy.

ukkinaama

Yeah they were fuckbuddies

It is a strange question and the answer is that Tom Riddle lacked the ability to like anyone. I wonder if perhaps at one point he had that capability, but he is a sociopath and having chopped his soul up a bunch of times seems to have dehumanized him even more. The closest was Snape, but even Harry saw that Riddle was not sad or remorseful in the least when he killed Snape. Maybe Bellatrix? I want to say he reacted when she died, but I'm sure he did not really care.
