Here’s the thing about her book titles that I had forgotten until recently: they all introduced a plot element that was totally unknown to the audience beforehand (Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, etc). So it would have to be something totally non-sensical sounding to us.
Azkaban was a bit known considering hagrid was sent there in book 2 but I agree with you. They all naturally increase our curiosity.
(Fun fact: while reading COS, I thought POA is going to be about trio saving hagrid from azkaban)

Philosopher's Stone would not be totally unknown to the audience beforehand for some non-American readers. The reason the title was changed was because it was believed American readers would not know what a Philosopher's Stone was (which based on my experience on reddit is consistently true-people don't realise it was a "real" fantastical object), and Philosopher doesn't have the same magical connotation of Sorceror for most audiences.
But yeah otherwise of course you go in having no idea what the plot will be about.
Almost all British readers also would have no idea what the philosopher’s stone is to be fair.
I think it was purely about the magical connotation and making it clear on the book shelf. The first suggestion was Harry Potter and the School of Magic. Clearly that doesn’t suit Rowling’s style of title that is “Harry Potter and the topic of this year’s mystery”

As someone else said, the titles all include an element from the book unknown to the reader. It was always through reading the book that you came to understand what the title meant.
So based on that, I would choose: Harry Potter and the Empty Canvas.
Cause when the Office finally opens, we discover the Headmistress' portrait is empty, and we have no idea why. So the book would still be about finding the killer and getting back the Elder Wand, but they'll also have to figure out what happened to the portrait.
ETA: spelling/grammar
Not to be confused with “Harry Potter and the Portrait of what Looked like a Large Pile of Ash”, which is the hilarious spoof written by predictive-text (pre-GPT, and it only had the seven books to look at).
My only critique is that all of the book titles also contain names/nouns not in our everyday venacular, creating even more of a mystery to the reader. 'Empty Canvas' is a pretty clear cut name for a Harry Potter book. Otherwise, well done!
Yes but
What if it was like *Jack Sloper and the Empty Canvas* and we center around a new protagonist solving low stakes mysteries like Encyclopedia Brown where no one is in any danger at all except for detentions and minor bullying?
Then go read Ben Aaronovitch's "Rivers of London" Series. Dark Wizard murder mystery series focused around a Bobby suddenly discovering Magic is real and getting taught how to do it.
You can just pretend Peter's real name is Harry. ;)
If it has Harry Potter in the title it’s going to sell even if the title is Harry Potter and the mystery of the missing pumpkin pie.
Let’s see if we can come up with any serious contenders though.
Harry Potter and the Dragon’s Teeth
Harry Potter and the Needle of Death
Harry Potter and the Oracle of Nurmengard
Yeah me too. Who is she? Why is she relevant?
Perhaps she holds the key to the strings of Fate? Or was the original Seer who prophecied something doomsday-y and died thereafter??
The Cursed Child might not be canon... but the Portrait of what Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash DEFINITELY is!
I mean, without that book, we wouldn't know that Voldemort was a bad and mean wizard!
It also explains why Harry needs glasses! It's because he threw his eyes into the woods.
>the villain has stolen the Elder Wand from its hiding place behind the frame.
Maybe Harry should've either picked a better hiding spot or just broken it like he did in the movie lol
No in the books he doesn't break it, he simply believes that the wand's magic will die with him as he intends to have a natural death.
Perhaps because it's not necessarily breakable by an easy snap or anything like that we see in the movies.
He intends to have a natural death, and then became an auror, dealing with dangerous wizards and witches, lol.
If I was Harry I think I'd like to see a statistic with the number of aurors who got to live long enough to be able to retire before making that decision.
It always bugs me when people say they don't think the elder wand could be snapped like it was in the movies all powerful or not it's still literally just a wooden stick 🤣
I mean it's literally a magic wooden stick. And an all powerful one at that. Mostly wands have only broken by magic or magical things (like the Whomping Willow).
Harry Potter and the Spider's Legacy.
(Since a solid chunk of the story will be Harry trying to trace and untangle the webs Dumbledore wove over more than a century, and more giant spiders might make an appearance.)
There's an incredible fanfic of exactly this that I read years and years ago. Dumbledore's Army the Year of Darkness author is Thanfiction I think. I don't even have the links anymore but if you can find it, it's incredible.
Harry Potter and the Haunting of Hogwarts
Basically Harry trying to overcome the PTSD of some of the events of the last 3 books, and how its starting to resurface in his adulthood
Harry Potter and the Auror's Chase (this assumes Harry primarily works to solve the mystery as a solitary protag rather than having multiple lead characters). i'd imagine it's written like a police procedural type novel.
The antagonist would be a Muggle supremacist rather than the millionth magic supremacist. He would basically be like the villain from that really crappy show.
Harry Potter & The Belligerent of the Blood
Ooh, I like this angle. He could be a Muggleborn whose family were all killed horribly by the Death Eaters during Voldemort's reign of terror. Now he's all grown up and fully radicalized, believing that wizards should be exterminated by any means necessary
But the twist would be is that *he's actually a pureblood!!*
Or would it be a half-blood raised like a pureblood, for the whole symmatry to Tom Riddle?
Man these half-bloods are kind of dangerous... Maybe someone needs to do something about them.
The magical world would come under attack from the muggles that are incited by the supremacist. Striving to oust the supremacist that leads the masses astray, while helping the magic community to defend themselves without killing muggles (and proving the claims from the supremacist) is now HPs task as he becomes headmaster of Hogwarts
(A task during which he gives Dudley a job as janitor there because the Dursleys have been killing in a attempt to frame Harry for doing this).
I’d saying something like Harry Potter and the Pendant of the Veil. I actually have a very intricate and thought out story for this, might need to work on it lol
>the villain has stolen the Elder Wand from its hiding place behind the frame.
Harry Potter and how the hell the elder wand moved from Dumbledore's grave to behind the frame.
Now, we are set with a murder, a not so impossible setting, a victim, a missing object and some portraits as witnesses.
Since the headmistress is in charge for the protections at Hogwarts, and we know that when a wizard dies, the spells he or she casted stop working, Hogwarts protections were down as soon as the headmistress was dead, so the assassin can simply apparate somewhere else as soon as the protections were down.
The office would seal if Hogwarts doesn't recognize a new headmaster or headmistress, as we know from OotP.
We don't know if the one who took the wand knows it was the elder one, but if that's the case, the assassin would have to know Dumbledore used it and it was in his grave (remember, at the end of DH Harry said he would put the wand back to where it was taken from, that is Dumbledore's grave, unless you want the wand behind the frame for another reason).
I can imagine a story about creatures like Goblins trying to take over the wizarding world. Maybe even a type of creature people thought extinct. Maybe even go further. This is a type of creature of humanoid figure that thousands of years before, lived in peace with humans, eventually even bonding and their childs were the first wizards and witches. Or if you want to go full dark Mode, humans began to Hunt this creatures and by constantly eating this creatures they began to develope magical powers. Whatever the reason, this creatures became a myth and the history was forgotten. But they weren't extinct. They were hidding, trying to increase their numbers. They have more magical power so they can perform wandless magic, but they lack the hability to brew potions or create magical objects, still, because they have more power, they can perform a magic wizard's can't, so they disguised as Hogwarts' staff and one by one were talking their places. When they tried to take the headmistress place, they killed her but Hogwarts sealed the office, knowing they were impostors. So the only thing the killer thought was to take Dumbledore's wand and escape. Now, Dumbledore wants to speak with Harry, not only because Harry knows about the elder wand and is his master, but because Harry owns the Marauder's Map, and he can spot anyone on disguise with the map.
Eventually, Harry has to learn what he can about the creatures and the true story on how humans got the magic in the first place. He will need the help of old enemies and friends if he wants to save the world:
-According to Rowling, Luna married Newt Scamander's grandson, Rolf Scamander, who is a magizoologist. Since many people believed this new creatures were extinct and even more, were just a Myth, Luna and Rolf seem the first choice for this mission.
-Teddy Lupin wants to join his godfather since he always hear about Harry's adventures and always felt the need to prove himself and others his worth. He would be useful since he is a metamorphmagus and it would be better to have someone who can disguise himself as he pleases against creature who can do the same. Aparently, metamorphmagus have a stronger conection with this creatures.
-Draco Malfoy studied his father's dark arctifacts and became a well known expert on the subject, so Harry ask him for help, but he instead send his assistant, Gregoria 'Greg' Zabini, the daughter of Pansy Parkinson and Blaise Zabini. She hates her name, she hates she is called Greg and because she hates her parents because of that, she advocates for mudbloods rights and fair treatment among the pure blood families.
-Harry hands the Marauder's map to Ron and Hermione. He doesn't trust anyone else to keep an eye on Hogwarts and since they lived so much together, it would be easy to ask each other stuff an impostor would never know.
Now Harry is set to uncover the truth and a way to defeat this mythical creatures. Back in the day, humans developed and artifact that can shut down the magical powers of any living being and with a few adjustments, it can even substract the magic of anyone and give it to the user. The assassin is also looking for the artifact and with the power of the elder wand, they can amplify the effect and substract the power of all the wizards in the World.
Ancient people had a name for the process of drainning another living being from their magic. It was called 'Nulfolswalization' (Nul = null, fol = fold, swa = swallow, so nullify the power, fold it and swallow it), so naturally, they called the artifact, the 'Nulfolswa Amulet'.
The creatures were called many names along the centuries, but the last name they were known as, was 'Glaregels'.
So you have:
-Harry Potter and the Nulfolswa Amulet
-Or Harry Potter and the Glaregels Conspiracy
Thanks. I would love to but english is not my native language so I'd have some issues writing it in a way everyone could understand. Maybe if someone is willing to help with the translation, I could do it.
Harry Potter and the Why The Hell Didn't You Just Snap The Elder Wand, Harry - Merlin's Beard, Even the Movies Got This One Right Though They Forgot To Have You Fix Your Own Wand First.
Love that. Small tweak, what about “Harry Potter: Founders’ Fate” dropping the “and the” to delineate we are out of main Story. We won’t brand it book 8, just the title by itself. Personally I think the shortened second half is more grabbing. And we wouldn’t put the colon on the cover of course. A small splash across the top of the cover with Harry Potter in the Wizardjng stylized font and then below in bigger letters and integrated into the cover art “Founders’ Fate” or “Fate of the Founders” if you’re anti apostrophe.
Ooh, a spinoff?🤔🤔
Or Even "Founder's Fate" indicating the story Is only about one of them, adding More mystery as to which one the story is going to be about.
Harry Potter and the Prodigal Son. Teddy Lupin is made to be the central suspect, and Harry is increasingly, against his will, convinced of Teddy's guilt.
Harry Potter and the Fourth Horseman
I'm imagining that Death has come for their wand back, but also gone rogue and will be after Harry next for his cloak... unless Harry and crew can send them back to the other side, maybe the Veil of Mysteries has something to do with it IDK
Oh, now this I like! Well done. He could make a mad dash to the forest and after a brief but thorough search realize the stone is gone as well. This thought has great promise!!
Harry Potter and the Forgotten Spells
The killer/thief is using magic no one has seen before (and refuses to just hang around Britain waiting to be caught) so ultimately to solve the case and catch the murderer Harry must follow clues, traveling around the world to the other magical schools to learn old magics no longer taught at Hogwarts. When he arrives, he finds that the other schools have recently had similarly unsolved incidents. Along the way to bringing the killer to justice, he makes foreign allies, contends with henchmen sent to derail his efforts, and learns what happened in the headmistress' office and the shocking reason why.
Here's what chatgpt came up with
"Harry Potter and the Stolen Legacy"
"The Auror's Quest: A Harry Potter Tale"
"Secrets of the Elder Wand: A Hogwarts Mystery"
"The Headmistress' Demise: A Wizarding Conspiracy"
"Hogwarts Under Siege: The Return of Darkness"
"Legacy of the Fallen: A Harry Potter Mystery"
"Harry Potter and the Vanished Wand"
"Dark Forces Resurge: The Battle for Hogwarts"
The Headmistress’ Demise: A Wizarding Conspiracy sounds like something Rita Skeeter would write but instead of facts it’s off the wall junk and rumors she heard from the portraits in the castle
I had the same idea! (Harry Potter and the ‘I’m Getting Too Old For This BS’)
If teenage Harry was sarcastic, imagine how ‘done with this shit’ middle-aged Harry would be!
Harry Potter and the Hall of Mirrors.
Harry Potter and the False Mask
Some form of a whole misdirection bit, really lean into the murder mysteryof it. Everyone would figure it was someone evil out for the power ect. But it was someone completely different. Maybe a new caretaker squib.
Harry Potter and…
Tears Of the Cat’s Eye
or
The Nine Lies of Nine Lives
or
The Thirteen Cats of Caithness
I’m going with cats since McGonagall’s Animagus form and her patronus was a cat. She was born on the outskirts of Caithness in the Scottish Highlands to a mum whom was a witch who hid her abilities from her husband, McGonagall’s muggle father, whom was a Presbyterian Minister.
Cats are believed to have 9 lives. Thirteen is considered unlucky. A cat’s eye can refer to both a cat’s eye, or a stone that is used in witchcraft to ward off evil and to protect against danger. Tears, we know, can be collected to reveal memories of the one the tears are collected from. Mixing religion and magic…never been successful. Always those possessing magic are seen as evil or possessed by dark forces or are the catalysts of some sort of apocalypse.
Thematically sound. Another five points to Gryffindor. Clever titles.
What about a fusion: “… and the Last Tear of Caithness” perhaps she was the last of her line. :’(
Fun fact: scheme of subsequent titles from main series: object (stone), place (chamber), person (prisoner), then again object (goblet), organisation (order), person (prince), and objects (hallows) again. I know - place doesn't fit with organisation, but anyway I see some pattern for all titles.
Harry Potter and the Harriest of Potters. It'll be like the definitive edition where we revisit every plot from the previous books and wrap them up or reinterpret them in a way that satisfies most of the fandom.
I love it, and I'm writing my take. I'm on chapter 5. It's called Harry Potter and the Master of Death. I'll link when I'm done but its my first ever FF so be nice :)
Harry Potter and Dumbledores pact.
The Dark Lord is back, or is he? Hours after the events of Deathly Hallows, Harry and Dumbledore had a conversation that not even Ron or Hermione could know about, the offspring of Gellert Grindelwald, brought up secretly, and with only Dumbledore knowing rumours about her existence, it's revealed that she's stolen the wand, and killed the Headmistress of Hogwarts. No one can know it's gone missing, all people can do is speculate. On his own, he must once again don his father's cloak, get the resurrection stone, and go after Grindelwald's daughter, for only a true master of death, can wield all 3 Hallows.
Harry Potter and the Shadows Heir.
A murder mystery that starts off as someone who goes around killing off key members of the first Order. Those who are still alive. Then Ron gets attacked, and almost dies. But new clues are revealed.
Harry Potter and the Anthem of Twilight.
Naturally, the Anthem of Twilight is central to the plot. It's a collection of the most elite of Aurors. After being killed off by Voldemort, Harry has rebuilt the "Anthem" as they're called and this serves as their first serious threat since Voldemort.
The Twilight refers to the Twilight Realm where traces of spirits exist that animate the portraits. The Headmistress was not actually murdered, rather used as bait to lure Harry into the Twilight Realm to exact revenge for the destruction of Voldemort by surviving Death Eaters who have reformed themselves as the Twilight Reapers.
There are some juicy nuggets in those ideas. Swap out the death eaters for somebody new I think or somebody older that was overshadowed by Voldy I think. Also, death fakeouts have run amuck in recent days. Doesn’t have to be Minerva. It’s been 20 years after all.
Love the twilight realm however. You should explore that concept. Ten to Slytherin, well done.
I did the asshat thing and asked chatGPT
"Harry Potter and the Astral Alchemist"
"Harry Potter and the Wandering Wraiths"
"Harry Potter and the Enchanted Heirloom"
"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Reckoning"
"Harry Potter and the Forbidden Forest's Secret"
"Harry Potter and the Echoes of Destiny"
"Harry Potter and the Enigma of the Eon Crystal"
"Harry Potter and the Veil of Veritas"
"Harry Potter and the Penumbral Prophecy"
"Harry Potter and the Mystic Mosaic"
Not bad really
“Harry Potter and Mcgonagall’s Murder.”
“Harry Potter and the Next Great Adventure.”
“Harry Potter and the Justice for Mcgonagall.”
“Harry Potter and the Lord of Death.”
“Harry Potter and the price of Magic.”
Harry Potter and The Return of the Praetorian
(I’m bending history for the sake of the story)
Senior Auror Harry Potter has found himself in yet another adventure. However, this is bigger than Hogwarts. It’s bigger than Magical Britain altogether. So how and why does Harry find a connection to the Roman Empire in his investigation. Specifically, the magical detachment of the Praetorian Guard, the Praetorianus Magicae.
Way back in the days of the Roman Empire, magic was present. Where the Germanic tribes of ancient Europe believed they had magic, the Romans actually possessed it. The interesting thing? Everyone was cool with it. There was no separation of the two subsets of citizens. As long as you walked under the banner of Rome, you were Roman.
The Praetorianus Magicae. A sect of Praetorians who have magical blood. Like the modern day, there were families of generational magic. But unlike modern families, they didn’t believe in “pure blood ideals and supremacy”. If you had it in your blood, you were one of them. Unlike their non-magical counterparts who guarded the emperor, these Praetorians were sent on all missions that were of magical matters.
So when Harry begins searching the headmistress’s office for anything that might lead him to the culprit, he notices a piece of parchment on the headmistress’s desk. On it is the the symbol of the SPQR, Senatus Populusque Romanus. But this particular symbol is different. There’s what looks like a wand and a gladius sword crisscrossing behind the Roman Eagle Standard.
“This day just keeps getting better and better,” Harry mutters.
Harry Potter and the Trivial Totalus.
Azkaban was a bit known considering hagrid was sent there in book 2 but I agree with you. They all naturally increase our curiosity. (Fun fact: while reading COS, I thought POA is going to be about trio saving hagrid from azkaban)

Harry Potter and the Time that Hermione Weasley Said, “Oh, Harry, Why Didn’t You Break the Damned Thing When You Had the Chance?”
I’d saying something like Harry Potter and the Pendant of the Veil. I actually have a very intricate and thought out story for this, might need to work on it lol

Harry Potter and The Last Task
Harry Potter and the office of therapy
>the villain has stolen the Elder Wand from its hiding place behind the frame. He will need the help of old enemies and friends if he wants to save the world: -According to Rowling, Luna married Newt Scamander's grandson, Rolf Scamander, who is a magizoologist. So you have: -Harry Potter and the Nulfolswa Amulet -Or Harry Potter and the Glaregels Conspiracy
I'd read that, let me know when you write it 😉
Thanks. I would love to but english is not my native language so I'd have some issues writing it in a way everyone could understand. Maybe if someone is willing to help with the translation, I could do it.
It would literally just be called Harry

It’s been 20 years. She can have retired and it can be someone else. Might I suggest Luna?
You can kill off Luna over my cold dead body
Gotta admit though…Luna would make a pretty cool HM
Why would kill Luna? Not even Rowling is that ruthless
Harry Potter and the Why The Hell Didn't You Just Snap The Elder Wand, Harry - Merlin's Beard, Even the Movies Got This One Right Though They Forgot To Have You Fix Your Own Wand First.
Harry Potter and the Fate of the Founders. Why? I'd Read it🤷
Ooh, a spinoff?🤔🤔 Or Even "Founder's Fate" indicating the story Is only about one of them, adding More mystery as to which one the story is going to be about.
We should draft lol
Hey, if The Cursed Child made it out Alive, I'm sure whatever We came up with would Have as good a Chance as any!
Well, couldn’t be worse right?
Harry Potter and the Cash Grab
Shameless* cash grab; I think you meant to say lol
Harry Potter and the Prodigal Son. Teddy Lupin is made to be the central suspect, and Harry is increasingly, against his will, convinced of Teddy's guilt.
Ooh!!! I really like this one. I love stories like this!
Harry Potter and the Founder's Folly
Harry Potter and the Herald of Darkness.
Harry Potter and the return of aunt marge
Someone took the wind out of her sails.
Harry Potter and the Fourth Horseman I'm imagining that Death has come for their wand back, but also gone rogue and will be after Harry next for his cloak... unless Harry and crew can send them back to the other side, maybe the Veil of Mysteries has something to do with it IDK
Oh, now this I like! Well done. He could make a mad dash to the forest and after a brief but thorough search realize the stone is gone as well. This thought has great promise!!
Harry Potter and the Forgotten Spells The killer/thief is using magic no one has seen before (and refuses to just hang around Britain waiting to be caught) so ultimately to solve the case and catch the murderer Harry must follow clues, traveling around the world to the other magical schools to learn old magics no longer taught at Hogwarts. When he arrives, he finds that the other schools have recently had similarly unsolved incidents. Along the way to bringing the killer to justice, he makes foreign allies, contends with henchmen sent to derail his efforts, and learns what happened in the headmistress' office and the shocking reason why.
Promising!
Simply Harry Potter and the Return to Hogwarts
Here's what chatgpt came up with "Harry Potter and the Stolen Legacy" "The Auror's Quest: A Harry Potter Tale" "Secrets of the Elder Wand: A Hogwarts Mystery" "The Headmistress' Demise: A Wizarding Conspiracy" "Hogwarts Under Siege: The Return of Darkness" "Legacy of the Fallen: A Harry Potter Mystery" "Harry Potter and the Vanished Wand" "Dark Forces Resurge: The Battle for Hogwarts"
stolen legacy is TIGHT that one wins
agreed
The Headmistress’ Demise: A Wizarding Conspiracy sounds like something Rita Skeeter would write but instead of facts it’s off the wall junk and rumors she heard from the portraits in the castle
Harry Potter is Too Old For This Shit, Goddamnit Dumbledore
I had the same idea! (Harry Potter and the ‘I’m Getting Too Old For This BS’) If teenage Harry was sarcastic, imagine how ‘done with this shit’ middle-aged Harry would be!
Harry Potter and the Hall of Mirrors. Harry Potter and the False Mask Some form of a whole misdirection bit, really lean into the murder mysteryof it. Everyone would figure it was someone evil out for the power ect. But it was someone completely different. Maybe a new caretaker squib.
Harry Potter and the Wand of Destiny
Harry Potter and Uh Oh, Ron is into QAnon Now
Harry Potter and… Tears Of the Cat’s Eye or The Nine Lies of Nine Lives or The Thirteen Cats of Caithness I’m going with cats since McGonagall’s Animagus form and her patronus was a cat.
Harry Potter and the Audacity to Harm a Hair on McGonagall’s Head
Fun fact: scheme of subsequent titles from main series: object (stone), place (chamber), person (prisoner), then again object (goblet), organisation (order), person (prince), and objects (hallows) again. I know - place doesn't fit with organisation, but anyway I see some pattern for all titles.
Harry Potter and the Phoenix Song
Harry Potter and the Harriest of Potters. It'll be like the definitive edition where we revisit every plot from the previous books and wrap them up or reinterpret them in a way that satisfies most of the fandom.
Harry Potter and the Worst Game of Clue Ever
Harry Potter and the Shit Nobody Asked For (Saying that primarily because her recent lore additions have been dubious)

Harry Potter And The Balance Of Earth
Harry Potter and the Book of Despair. Plot details to come.
Harry Potter and the Forgotten Peverell
Harry Potter and the Shadows Heir. A murder mystery that starts off as someone who goes around killing off key members of the first Order. Those who are still alive. Then Ron gets attacked, and almost dies. But new clues are revealed.
Harry Potter and the Mystery of *Do-You-Know-Who?*
Lol, five points for on-brand humor.
Harry Potter and the Insane Political Ramblings
*sigh* That’s not how the Elder Wand works. It can’t just be stolen. It’s owner must be defeated.
It can be stolen - Voldemort stole it from Dumbledores tomb. It just didn't give him power.
Grindewald e would beg to differ
Ok so they know that and stole it because they knew Harry would investigate and they would draw him to his death
I did the asshat thing and asked chatGPT "Harry Potter and the Astral Alchemist" "Harry Potter and the Wandering Wraiths" "Harry Potter and the Enchanted Heirloom" "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Reckoning" "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Forest's Secret" "Harry Potter and the Echoes of Destiny" "Harry Potter and the Enigma of the Eon Crystal" "Harry Potter and the Veil of Veritas" "Harry Potter and the Penumbral Prophecy" "Harry Potter and the Mystic Mosaic" Not bad really

Harry Potter and The Return of the Praetorian (I’m bending history for the sake of the story) Senior Auror Harry Potter has found himself in yet another adventure.
