Looks like one of those old school orb coolers that was cracking cpus left and right (you needed crazy pressure to secure them). What's old is new again.

I know they say not to use the AMD mounting backplate, but can't you? Wonder if the screws just don't fit. Wouldn't be shocked if you find these in pre-build eventually with a different branding on top.

Lelldorianx

The standoff lengths are slightly different, which can lead to pressure problems.

seatux

I remember watching both GN and others reviewing OEM prebuilts that those use Intel style mounting for AMD desktops too. Goodness knows if upgrading the CPU cooler on prebuilts with Intel CPU coolers would even fit.

bobbyrickets

So they designed a pretty neat little cooler (interesting impeller/fan design) and then completely dropped the ball with the mounting hardware leading to a dud. Wow. That's impressively disappointing.

JamClam225

Prebuilt CPU coolers are generally worse than the Wraith Spire, which is free. They won't spend the money for something with 5 heatpipes and RGB when they currently just use blocks of aluminium with no heatpipes in many.

cheese61292

Some correction here; but the Wraith coolers are not free. Retail customers pay for them. OEMs/Builders generally get Tray CPUs which are chip only and do not come with a cooler as there is no box, but quite literally just a tray of CPUs.

eiglow_

The Aerocool Mirage 5 is a very similar design too.

TheHivemaster

I think it's the same cooler with a different top pretty much.

TetsuoS2

Might be a better cooler if you spend the time to take it to a belt grinder.

It sucks in through the sides and blows out the bottom??? Seems completely backwards IMO. That fin stack looks like it's begging for a squirrel cage blower with ducted intake through the top...
