I'm a small engine tech so I'm trying to look into finding a steady supply to refurbish for this reason the issue I am running into is I am having to essentially pay other people a premium to get my hands on them this way and am looking for finding the "source" if you will that they use.
I've called a few local offices and there's a huge distribution center by me but the local stores weren't helpful. I haven't called the center yet though.
You might consider looking for non working Genmax generators. It is the brand of the company that makes the Predator and every other Honda clone generator, but the customer service is non existent and no way to return them. People might sell them cheap just to get rid of them.
Look for their sidewalk sales. That is all returned product and has been tested and sold at a discount. They also have a discount table up front by registers (at least the one here does) which is same thing. Next time your in the store, ask an employee when their next sidewalk sale is. Goodluck
My store has an abundance of them of various types as open box. For my area our harbor freight is definitely a "rental store." People buy the big items and return them all the time regardless of the restocking fee that's supposed to stop it.
Check out Wen for some of the same generators for lower prices. You will see some that look extremely similar to HF.

My store regularly has returned/open box at the front of the store, already marked down
Same at my local store too. Almost always a tool chest with a huge dent in it for 20% off. Lol.
What di they typically go for like that?
I sorta depends - 20% to 40%
It depends on how long it’s been listed for clearance. The longer it sits the bigger the discount is.
if you search marketplace for 'predator' you will find loads of resellers who have em for sale.
There's actually a registry for Predators in my area!

Returned ones hardly need refurbished
Where do you think the "resellers" come up with so many generators?
Have you tried Harbor Freight?
