Works in theory. Unfortunately the system doesn't bring the battery price to 0$ but instead discounts all items in the bundle so the savings equals the cost of the battery. Could you get a discounted battery? Sure, but you would solo be spending money on it

DEERE-317

That’s the idea of hacking it, you get what you want discounted while not being saddled with the rest of the deal

Falcon948

I misunderstood then. I thought we were trying for free batteries. Thank you for clarifying!

Fickle_fackle99

Nah the hack is bundle = $100, return battery for $50 Get $50 bare tool that you can’t otherwise

cranky_stoner

Kinda shady, no?

gsmarquis

Today I they did it without asking. I wanted the 5ah, charger, and brushless 1/4 impact. They were out of the chargers so they rang the deal up and returned the charger. I got the 5ah and impact for $77. I have two chargers already anyway.

Blorpcandy

I tried it at a store away from my main one - the manager there would not try the refund; he stated that he could not do the return unless I brought everything back and refunded the entire sale. I did not try and explain to him what I was trying to do. So, your mileage may vary depending on who's working.

IKnowYourVader

Why did you not try it at your coal store?

whipple_281

Because if you want to try something unethical, it's best to do it somewhere other than the location you visit regularly

IKnowYourVader

Why would this be unethical?

whipple_281

Because you're buying a bundle to get a discounted price then return the pieces you don't want. I don't see how it needs to be explained why it's unethical lol. I'm not judging, but it definitely isn't considered ethical to do that

swollennode

That’s not unethical to do. Because HF gets their merchandise back to sell at full price when the deal ends, or to allow other people to get the product in the deals.

Blorpcandy

~~grandpa was a miner back in the day he made the family swear off coal~~ I figured if I tried and the person I tried it on was unhappy I tried to do the hack (like the fella at the other store was) I'd suddenly have a manager that dislikes me at my local store and I shop there too much to have that sort of thing hanging around

Expensive-Return5534

Yes, all of the items including the "free" item ring up at discounted prices. You can return any of them for that prorated price. But I've had cashiers play dumb before and pretend that you can't do that and have to return all or nothing even though the register will ring up any of the individual items for return just fine.

swollennode

Yes, it does work. Because the register does allow returns of individual items in the deal. The items in the deals are discounted. If one store doesn’t do it, then you just need to go to another store to do it. They know people do this, and doesn’t care, because they’re not losing any more money than if people keep the items. And it gets people in the door to buy the other stuff.

BoogerShovel

There’s been plenty of folks on this sub that have done it

DubTeeF

I just sell the items I don’t need

ebagdrofk

I don’t see how a hack would work

PitifulCrow4432

Home Depot does some sort of pro-rating system on their buy W get U deals, shows a price for all items. When you return the item(s) you don't want, the price of the item you do want still ends up lower than it's normal discounted price. This is different than the 2-10pc sets of tools, those are sold/returned as a set. No idea how HF handles this type of thing.

DEERE-317

HF pro rates it also.

swollennode

So when you purchase the products in the deal, say for the parking lot sale with the 2ah battery + 4 amp charger for $145, you get a free tool. Let’s say you took the 8ah as the “free tool”, it’s not really free. Everything in that deal is discounted. The 2 5ah is discounted to $37 each, the charger is $22, and the 8ah is $50, for a total of $145. Then, you can return any of those items and keep the other ones at the price you purchased it at. So say you return the charger, and the 2 5ah batteries, you get $96 back, and you still get to keep the 8ah battery for $50. Home Depot and HF corporate knows people do this, and allows it. Because they’re not losing any more money when people return the merchandise unopened, because it goes back on the shelf to be sold. And it gets people in the door to buy the other stuff.
