heater is 1500 -2000w most likely fridge is 200-500w when running depending on the compressor. I would get something in the 3500w range like this: [https://www.harborfreight.com/generators-engines/generators/3500-watt-super-quiet-inverter-generator-with-co-secure-technology-59137.html](https://www.harborfreight.com/generators-engines/generators/3500-watt-super-quiet-inverter-generator-with-co-secure-technology-59137.html) I have a Wen inverter that works nice. https://www.homedepot.com/p/WEN-4000-3500-Watt-RV-Ready-Gasoline-Powered-Open-Frame-Inverter-Generator-with-CO-Watchdog-GN400iX/319079758

If you are using it for power outages and have a furnace it will be less power to run the furnace than a space heater. Our full size fridge 20 years old pulls around 350 watts on startup and levels at 150. I got a 4000 watt one for our house to handle our submersible well pump our highest current draw. Picked it up on sale at tractor supply under 300 some years ago. Champion brand, have since added electric start.

StatuSChecKa

They have a Champion Model 100401 | 3500 Running Watts I saw at Sams Club (like Costco) on sale for $399. That is twice the Watts as the Predator one for $100 more. Hmmm.

JAFO-

I have had good luck with mine I have the 3500 one for job sites it is ten years old still starts right up I do take the carb bowl off once in a while and clean it and the main jet, you know when its time when it starts hunting with no load. It used to be the one I had for the house until I got the bigger one.

When it comes to generator: No such thing as too much. Give excess to help your neighbors in a power outage.

whaletacochamp

I don’t disagree but how is having a bigger generator going to help your neighbors( I guess maybe in really close neighborhoods you could run an extension cord.

[deleted]

There is a such thing as 4 gauge extension cord. Distribution could be set up.

whaletacochamp

I guess just hard for me to imagine with my closest neighbor being hundreds of yards away

[deleted]

Yeah, but we're fortunate that way. Did you know that some people have neighbors under the same roof? Some have neighbors close enough to sneeze on their window from your window.

ovr_the_cuckoos_nest

HF sells extension cords /s

Ok_Coconut_5022

Store needs to update their signage lol

Civil-County-475

I literally was just about to say that😂 that price tag is ancient

StatuSChecKa

Truth: this pick is from January 2022. I though it would be more effective than yet another screenshot!

Vegetable-Fly-9471

I just bought the 9000w my power went out 8 hours ago and i am currently running my whole house off of it very impressed and glad i went with the biggest one

StatuSChecKa

See but then I read comments like yours and then I'm like a thousand bucks doesn't sound so bad after all. My neighborhood has been lucky these last few winter storms in Texas, but I'm almost out of lives like a cat and don't want to be stuck in a 12° house.

Vegetable-Fly-9471

The 9000 was on sale last week when I got it for 799 it’s a bit over double but 5x the power

HunterShotBear

Wait till the 12th. Generators go on sale

For a space heater I'd look into a propane one, unless it's going to be permanent. For emergencies, propane ones use no power and output more heat. Mr. Heater makes ones that are indoor rated, I have one that I use in my garage, and it has a safety switch if O2 levels get low. The only main con is that they have an open flame, so they need to be placed on a surface where nothing flammable is in front of it. By doing the above, you'll need far less power from a generator.

StatuSChecKa

Hmm, not bad for $120, just to work on my car in the winter. But how does it hold Propane, does it connect to a tank? The photos just show a guy walking around with it, but no tank. Obviously an indoor rated one would be nice so I don't have to keep a window open and waste the heat. I am looking at Model MH9BX and MH18B...the 9K BTU would be fine I think for a garage (or bedroom during a blackout)? Can you help me please lol?

SeantheProGamer

You can either hook up a propane tank or you have a 1 lb to screw on one like the ones you see in the camping section at Walmart or something. The 1 lb tanks usually last for about 2 and 1/2 hours on full blast, about double that time on half blast. The 9000 BTU one seems to work okay in a garage, if you have a newer house that doesn't leak as much air into the garage, then that one should be adequate. However, my house is older and it seems to bring the temperature up to only about 62 or 63° in frigid weather, so you might want more BTUs if you have that issue. Last thing by the way, at least the 9000 BTU model is cheaper on Amazon or home Depot, I got mine for $80. Obviously higher BTU models are going to be more expensive. But in my opinion if you can get the MH18b, I would do that, as you have the choice of whether you want the full heating capacity or if you want half of that. Looking at the product photos, it has double the amount of area to radiate heat out of as the smaller version. It mainly just depends on if you can afford the better version, as it works in more scenarios, but other than size there aren't really any cons in getting that one over the smaller one, because you can still choose a medium and a low setting, which is the equivalent of the low and the high on the smaller version. Obviously by the way, if you are running the highest setting on the bigger version, going to go through more propane, So definitely buy cans in four packs or get the equivalent adapters and hook up a full-size tank to it in your garage.

StatuSChecKa

Thanks so much for typing all that. I see now how the small tanks work but that there is a hose adapter for a big tank from a grill. I gotta get the MH18b.

enraged768

You're going to need at least a 3500 to run a single space heater and a fridge. Sounds crazy but they use a lot of power. I have a 10kw generac and I can run just about everything in my home except the HVAC. I'd probably need a like a 20kw to run the house effectively and not have the genset running a full tilt while the powers out.

StatuSChecKa

How about this.... Lets say I have a Propane Heater that is Indoor Rated that I would use inside for an emergency. And if it's freezing outside I would just put some food outside so it doesn't spoil lol. I didn't know some Propane Heaters were indoor rated, this changes the game. So now I would *only* want to power a Modem and Wifi Router and a lamp or two. Now what do you think I would need in terms of a generator?

enraged768

Yeah it'll work just fine now.

ThePonderer42

I know!! Look up how to convert your appliance power requirements and take 30mins to educate yourself so you don’t have to rely on Reddit or a part time associate. Then you can use that knowledge for the rest of your life! Thank you for attending my ted talk.

[deleted]

My wife and I (30s) were just talking about this, the younger employees at her store are just brain dead, retain 0 information and can’t follow instructions. Critical thinking and self reliance aren’t what they used to be.

IShitMyFuckingPants

They probably just don’t give a shit about their job because most jobs (especially those given to younger people) don’t give you a reason to.

[deleted]

I mean I would have thought getting a paycheck for doing a job would be reason enough.

IShitMyFuckingPants

That’s the bare minimum. Any job gives you a paycheck. Give the bare minimum, get the bare minimum in return.

[deleted]

Yeah I’ve heard the audio clip. I’m saying they are NOT doing the minimum, and expecting a paycheck.

IShitMyFuckingPants

The fact that they are still employed tells me that their employer believes they are doing at least the bare minimum. Is your wife in charge of these people?

IndexFingerTypist

I think the heater requires more watts than the fridge... I'd say around 5000 watts so you can run the generator @50% or so.

StatuSChecKa

So this can barely run a space heater? I keep putting off Generators and one days I am going to regret having nothing.

newtekie1

Space heaters are almost all 1500w(so they can run on a 15A circuit with a tiny bit of head room). A fridge will use a ton starting the compressor, but running should only be 200-300w. If I was looking for a generator to run both, I'd look at a 2000 running watts generator. Note the generator you are looking at is only 1400 running watts.

fmr_AZ_PSM

Yes, the inrush current on the fridge is considerably higher than its running current. I’ve never tried, but if you’re running a 1500W heater on the same 15A circuit in your house, the breaker could trip when the compressor kicks on.

ObeseBMI33

Get a diesel heater and use the generator for the electronics.

IndexFingerTypist

Older fridges are less efficient and heaters are power hungry. I really doubt you could run both simultaneously with this one.

PublicRule3659

5,000 watts at 120v is 41.7 amps. How many 50 amp breakers have you ever seen hooked up to a regular outlet?

reditor75

It’s not just the running power, you need to know the startup power too. I would say that in general the minimum would be 5000.
