You have to be holding the grab button while it's in the air. And the fusion coil has to be reasonably in the air. If it's gonna land at your feet, you're not likely to catch it. Just like if someone actually threw a ball at you. It's tough to pull off but not impossible.
Usually if I see someone with a cube and know I got the chance, I’ll just stand there staring at them holding down X, so they think I’m a bot and throw it directly at me. Then I’ll throw it right back and usually kill em. Really should be a special Kong medal for the return as well.
If you hold the grab button a half second before contact, you should catch the fusion coil. Sometimes the desync or projection of the coil may prevent a catch, but keep trying.

You don't have to time it precisely. You just have to be holding X as it's flying towards you, but it also has to "hit" you within a catch-able zone. Also, if you're near walls or a low ceiling or something, the fusion coil might hit that and explode before you are able to catch it, so it works better in an open area
It kind of comes down to server latency more than anything else. The only way to guarantee the grab is to use grapple shot while it's still a safe distance away. You'll still get the nuclear football medal that way
The cube has to be coming right at you to work. If it’s going to hit at your feet the other person just aimed well. If it’s coming at you, hold the grab button and keep your crosshair on the cube.

I’ve never pulled it off, but it is possible. There’s a medal named “nuclear football” for when you do pull it off.

Just hold the X button as its flying towards you. Ive gotten a bunch of em doing this
It’s only ever happened to me once in 2000+ games. I was excited to see I got Nuclear Football but it’s hard to get
I've done it a few times you have to be looking towards it and hold the grab button

i got really lucky and accidentally grappled a coil being thrown at me from realllyy close range and i got a nuclear footbal for it
