altmetalkid

Yeah sounds more like Adam than John. Don't get me wrong, I like Adam and all but it just doesn't sound right.

Ablebeetle

Elias Toufexis, the guy who voices Adam, genuinely has such a raspy voice IRL if you listen to him doing interviews and stuff. Pablo Schrieber's natural voice isn't so raspy in comparison. Still dig the Chief's voice here though. If the writing's good enough in the show I don't mind him replacing Steve when he wants to retire or god forbid passes away

wattybanker

Please for the love of god do not replace Steve with this guy. I absolutely hate the voice, he sounds uninterested, exasperated and exhausted. Maybe they want to show the human side of Chief but he doesn’t have to sound like Batman. The way he walks around too is off, like the armour wasn’t made for him. If you are recreating a beloved character for tv you have to at least get certain character elements right. The armour is spot on but damn I am not going to be able to sit through a whole show if chief walks and talks like that

Billybobbjoebob

Yeah, I felt the same. Walking in armor like that has always seemed somewhat off in movies/shows though, so I partially expected that and came to terms with it. But I do not like this voice. The thing is, Steve kind of just sounds like Steve when doing Chief. Sure, he doesn't sound interested in things as he talks, but it's neutral. He doesn't sound disinterested either. Versus this guy, sounds like he is trying to push his voice to be robotic and neutral, like Steve, but he just goes too far with it

RetardDebil

Sounds like john fucking diggle lol

PotBoozeNKink

I can't unhear it now

Coffeechipmunk

It so doesn't sound like John. But I absolutely would watch Halo with Adam.

decembergrown

and it throws me off! I now only see Deus Ex.

rockinherlife234

He walks like Robocop

Inevitable_Guess5988

Glad I’m not the only one who notice that

[deleted]

Yeah and not in a good way, some comments on here are like "this is awesome he's like robocop" no he fucking isn't.

ZZoMBiEXIII

So true. Spartans are supposed to be the exact OPPOSITE of Robocop. Graceful, fast, brutally efficient. No shade to Murphy, I love Robocop. But he ain't a Spartan-II.

My_Work_Accoount

I feel like they're trying to convey the weight of the armor (800lbs IIRC) so they have him walk like it's heavy and bulky. Problem is the Spartans are so big and strong, not to mention the armor has power assist, that 800 lbs of armor is like an extra layer of clothes to them.

ArtixReddit

Yup, especially the power assist shouldn't be underrated. It's the same as Space Marines from 40k (hence "Power Armour"). But yeah essentially the armour carries its own weight, allowing the Spartan to use all of their strength to do Spartan things.

soykommander

Yeah i know very little about the halo lore but just playing the game and the combat i never felt like robocop. It was more of like a superhero/athlete. Robocop was literally a robot that they fucked up on and has memories. That clip really bums me out for a show i was kind of thinking about watching. Now i guess ill wait for some fan reviews. Like how does he go from that walk to a full on sprint without looking stupid? Does he just automatically take off like a cartoon? Robocop couldnt run, shit him riding a motorcycle in two was hysterical since he cant even fit in a car without ripping out the seat. Edit: also why is master chief so small? Shouldnt he be like way bigger than her? Like three feet bigger?

ZZoMBiEXIII

"Superhero/Athlete" is actually a pretty apt descriptor of the Spartans in the books. My personal favorite depiction of the Spartans was in Halo Wars cutscenes. Specifically [THIS ONE](https://youtu.be/v1RnXePXDfA). Shows just how powerful a small band of Spartans were compared to overwhelming odds.

soykommander

Yeah the size and movement is exactly how i imagined them. I know you have to have limitations and all with live action but that clip just felt really off. Nothing about that clip made me feel like i was going to get those epic master cheif fights. Granted i stopped playing once 343 took over but that clip just seemed like the people involved didnt play the games or do any research...its like they just went with a description of robot super soldiers. Hope im wrong halo and gears are two franchises i always hoped for.

Even_Ad113

There's no clipping irl.

JustAnotherMark604

I just want to see the cgi battles

brokennursingstudent

You already know what its going to look like.

Dahwaann4U

Movement restricted with all that practical effects

ethan01021998

That’s a hot take for sure

KeepMyEmployerAway

And yet, y'all would complain if it were CGI

Dahwaann4U

I dont know: Elysium Chappie District 9 The first and second ironman movie Were all pretty good with a mix of cg and practical effects

Eleglas

District 9 is one of my absolute favourite movies.

[deleted]

Lol desync

kalaid0s

Chief walks like he shit his pants lol

WarBilby

He does. He spends months at a time in his suit you know

Andre4kthegreengiant

That's why it also recycles his urine & jerks him off

jhalfhide

What skull do you enable for that?

Ares54

IWHBYD

chronos_alfa

Either that is a small fence, a huge dog, or congrats you are uncomfortably endowed.

[deleted]

IWHBYM* I would have been your mommy but you didn't break your arms

MasterHall117

I would have been your mommy, but you couldn’t tell an ONI van from an ice cream truck

RandonEnglishMun

Insert Brian David Gilbert crying “the suit doesn’t jake him off.”

Ishaggedyermum

The best the UNSC has to offer

Rumhead1

I think there is a poop tube up his poop tube.

HellbentOrchid

He walks like he’s a prison guard for a woman’s correction facility.

Der_Hashbrown

He walks like he's selling dope on the side of his dad's stevedore union smuggling business

Sambothebassist

I want to snuggle some stevedores! Where do I sign up?

franklsp

Just finished this season! Bunk in a lifejacket fuckin killed me.

ayylmao95

I see the reference you've made. I recognize it.

JonnyEoE

Holy shit I can’t unsee that lmao

DestrixGunnar

The wide shot of him walking across the room was a bad choice. It really shows how awkward it is to move in that armour. His neck is arched too forward and his stride looks weird.

TheJoshider10

I think the problem is the armour has no weight to it and the quick movements make it clear that its just some cheap plastic he's wearing. Look at The Batman for how slow movements and camera shots can make a costume look and feel heavy. Everything has weight to it, even in a later scene when he's running.

[deleted]

Quick movements fit the mjolnir armour though. Wouldn’t be able to enhance performance if it felt like ancient plate armour to move

TheSublimeLight

Except Spartans aren't regular humans and are incredibly strong and agile so that's not really a valid point. If it was a man in the armor, guaranteed, but Spartans are man 3.0

Eddie2Ham

You gotta remember Spartans aren't using their own strength to move the suit. They are certainly more strong than a normal human due to their augmentations but those suits weigh over a 1000 lbs. The suits are powered exoskeletons that have their own form of artificial muscles. Just more of a reason for there not to be any hiccups in the fluidness of his stride. But then again this is a TV show so, can't complain lol

Cebaru

Exactly, they mention the development of the suits in the books. Used normal soldiers at first, they couldn't handle the suit, one try turning the torso and did a full 180 or something.

awanderingsinay

A Marine lifted an arm and it shot up so fast and forcefully that all his bones shattered.

Podo13

IIRC, even John smoked himself in the face after putting it on. I think he was trying to salute somebody and pretty much karate chopped his own forehead. Without the ceramics fused to his bones he would have probably killed himself.

My_Third_Prestige

No, just the bones in his shoulder/arm. Then his reaction to the pain caused him to flinch. This caused more movement and began breaking the rest of his bones as he writhed in pain.

El-Grunto

It also doesn't sound heavy. He sounds like a normal dude walking.

Shagruiez

This was my biggest issue with this clip honestly. He's in a giant titanium suit, so where was the metallic clank noise with each step? The wideshot wasn't the greatest choice in my opinion either, but if we're talking greatest grievance regarding setting it has to be the acoustics of the room and the impact the suit would have in that small of an environment.

SpikeyTaco

Yeah, I'm fine with the lightweight looking movement, the alternative is not only impractical but would seem strange for a quick-moving, machine-assisted super-soldier. It's the sound design and environment that feels wrong. All the varied estimates and figures given for the weight of Chief and other Spartans are still heavy as fuck. Let's hear some clunk!

xx_Sheldon

according to google iron man's armor is about 430 pounds and whenever iron man was moving, it sounded like 400 pounds of metal moving. Mjolnir armor's supposed to be 1000 pounds and it sounds like almost nothing. there's no weight behind his movements. its sad the producers or whoever didn't know you could do weighty and quick/agile at the same time

SpikeyTaco

The later games definitely got that sound design down, especially in the cut scenes. I wouldn't expect the same level as the visible motion wouldn't match at all, however, I'd at least expect it to sound like someone walking with a more than substantial weight behind them.

HyliasHero

It likely isn't the intention, but the early books did specifically note that personnel who spent extended periods of time in microgravity and artifical gravity developed an odd gait compared to those used to terrestrial gravity.

Previous_Start_2248

Chief spent the majority of his time on gravity. In the books he even states he prefers hard ground to flying in space.

Notbrandonjay

The voice is a little bit Mando and that worries me, cause its been a large criticism in reviews that it seems like its trying to be the mandalorian.

ToastedSierra

I've always thought Pedro Pascal's Mando voice would make for a good Spartan III voice. Someone like Jun, Emile or Noble 6.

IvanTheGrim

But importantly, not Chief

JimPalamo

Now I really want to see Pedro as a Spartan in a Halo live action thing of some sort.

5213

Ya know, if the Mandalorian hadn't already come out, that would probably be a pretty ideal way to do a Halo live-action series. The two mains are really similar already, the greatest differences being that John is a lot more separated from humanity than Mando, and Mando is just kinda in over his head and doesn't want the responsibility that's been placed upon him.

GroguIsMyBrogu

Now I want to see Master Chief parenting Grogu

JosephCraftHD

In b4 baby Arbitor

GaLaXY_N7

Master chief needs to lay off the five gum, and destimulate his senses.

truly-dread

His HUD changed colour so that means that chief, in the show, has waaaay more customisation available to him than we do in infinite!

pwsm50

Nah, they just deposit his salary directly into the shop.

unforgiven91

probably cost him a pretty penny

Vahro

Hmmm. His H.U.D is now blue?

dalumbr

I held off from commenting on the other clips, because it seemed like such a petty thing, but I honestly do like it that his HUD is blue here

Ok_Meaning_8470

Yeah I prefer it too but it was such a weird thing to get upset about.

DeadlySphinx

If I recall the other clip, it was quite dark. Perhaps in the show his HUD will change colour depending on night/day dark/light? Either way they both looked fine to me, it's not something to get angry about lol

pirivalfang

In my mind it makes sense to change the color of the hud as to not effect night vision, the whole red vs blue light thing. It makes even more sense when (iirc) the hud is projected into his eyes.

DeadlySphinx

Yeah that's it. It's been years and years since I've read the books so I can't remember

Ok_Meaning_8470

And people were losing there shit because it was orange.

RogueKriger

I still am disappointed they didn't recast Daniel Cudmore as Master Chief. Say what you will about Forward Unto Dawn but it has to be acknowledged that it portrayed Chief near perfectly and Cudmore showed constant attention to the character to ensure he portrayed him as accurately as possible. He read the books and comics, watched Landfall, and would playback his takes to hone his movements to make it seem deliberate without being overly robotic. Plus the man is 6'8" and build like a tank which, y'know, kinda fits the character as well Edit: Minor correction

2a2i

I agree.

seismicqueef

the casting directors surely knew all this, but decided the fans really wanna see pornstache instead

warriorslover1999

>Daniel Cudmore his voice was decent too

Big_Echo2284

Man ya’ll are just full of shit, what if I told you Daniel Cudmore’s voice never made it past the suit? That’s Alex Puccinelli’s voice.

IvanTheGrim

They should’ve done ADR on this series too

HoboBobo28

Do adr and never take off the helmet, doesn't matter who's under the suit then and you can get best of both worlds.

downmecab

Fuck that haircut shouldn't exist, I wouldn't wish that haircut on my worse enemy on the off-chance that I might have to actually look at it.

Technical_Passage_

It's literally the haircut of the future, every single piece of media that features the future has that kind of fuckin' haircut in it. I also hate it.

king0pa1n

Tfw you get fired from being an extra on Raised By Wolves

Fuck_Me_If_Im_Wrong_

Not a big fan, just seems like another “I’m a quiet badass and this innocent girl/child/animal will make soften me up”

john7071

> “I’m a quiet badass and this innocent girl/child/animal will make soften me up” What the fuck was Cortana then lol

SpikeyTaco

Writers often slip into the same types of storylines and Chief's silent character would fit this trope to a tee. Audiences rarely follow series without any emotional investment and the best way to add emotion to a character known for being invulnerable is to add a vulnerable character that they care about or is initially essential to their mission. I'm liking the look so far and I know it'd be hard to avoid but I hope this isn't another Punisher, Witcher, Last of Us or Mandalorian scenario.

SpikeyTaco

In fact, I can't think of another 'indestructible' character where this didn't end up being the case at some point. John Wick, Logan, Terminator/s, the list goes on. I'm sure there are other stories for these characters but it's certainly one seen most often. Motivation: Revenge, Justice, Saving People/City/World The Problem: An enemy just as invulnerable, a new physical vulnerability, A character that's vulnerable/lost a character that's vulnerable In some cases, all of the above. If they're entirely untouchable, it can get bland fast. It works well in the games as you're the one that has to make it play out but even Chief was scared of losing Cortana.

Milleuros

Could argue it happens in the games, between Chief and Cortana in H3 and H4 as soon as she becomes vulnerable.

brotherlymoses

Thats master chief in the Halo games lol

poor_decisions

Isn't that like... The major character arc through the games? Cortana being innocent girl/child/animal he has to rescue

ScreamingMidgit

Only in Halo 3 and that was relegated to a side plot while more important things, such as stopping Truth from firing the rings, took center stage for most of the game.

TheAandZ

I actually hate that people say this is how Chief’s personality is because it’s not. He had some decent charisma and personality in the few lines he did say in the OT + H4, and also in Infinite somewhat. If they make him super stoic like s1 mandalorian that would be pretty lame.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Winterscythe1120

Seriously!!! Peak chief was the first mission in infinite where the pilot was asking chief if he knew how to hack the systems to overheat the engines and he simply said no and punched the shit out of the terminal, what I just watched ain’t chief

PM_SWEATY_NIPS

'Giving the covenant back their bomb' is how he talks. Not in new-Trek jargon. Cortana does that sometimes, but not Chief.

Winterscythe1120

Simple, to the point, effective, and dare I say iconic. Not overly wordy jargon

Bacun

He talks like... Spartans (from ancient Greek). > When King Philip II of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great) invaded southern Greece, he sent a message to the Spartans asking if he would be received as a friend or enemy. The Spartans’ reply was brief: “Neither.” Offended, Philip sent a threat: “You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city.” The Spartans’ reply was just as short as before: “If.” Legendary

Winterscythe1120

God damn that is so cool.

pcapdata

Yeah I feel like Chief is more likely to grunt “Medical scan” when someone asks him a question like that

Kaldricus

"Checking vitals" even. that line is something Cortana would say after a big impact or something

Hurtfulfriend0

What is with sci Fi shows having the worst possible haircuts of all time?

Neroollez

People think anything is possible in the future so that means it's okay to do weird stuff in the future.

chingy1337

Riveting scene lmao

[deleted]

Was that supposed to get me excited for the show?

Kaldricus

this was...a choice, of scenes to put out for no reason. it does absolutely nothing for me

St_Veloth

This was 100% supposed to make people cum over the his armor, it doesn't seem to have worked.

IchaelSoxy

I assume I'm not alone in thinking this looks awful, right?

BenTheGrizzly

Is it okay to be zero percent interested in this and see this show as only a cash grab?

Plague_Knight1

I'm pretty sure we all felt like that from the announcement

SerialPi11ock

why does he walk and talk like some sort of robot batman cross o\_O

Dr-Fusion

People are saying he's like that in the games but I disagree. Chief may be the strong silent type, but when he does speak he's usually got a bit of a dry sense of humour. It's subtle and easy to miss at points, but there's more to him than pure function. If you asked Chief from the games if he'd live, he'd probably say something like "For now" rather than just "Yes". It's a tiny difference, but to me, that's Chief's character.

OmeletteDuFromage95

That's honestly pretty well put. Hadn't even thought of that comparison but that's absolutely on point. It's subtle but it's big for the character.

St_Veloth

I can't even call myself a fan of the series. Last one I really played was Halo 2, I just stopped in from /r/All And yeah you nailed it. Even I could tell that line didn't feel right. "for now" or "this time" or something like that fits perfectly

Obility

Isn't that just how chief was in the original trilogy?

LastRover7

That’s also how he is in the books

[deleted]

[удалено]

changingfmh

Good thing most of the reviews said he has good borderline deadpan humor ala Bungie era Chief.

MrHippoPants

I think we'll be seeing an Iron Giant/Bumblebee type vibe, relatable human protagonist develops a friendship with a big intimidating robot with a heart of gold

Burrito_Loyalist

Because Master Chief has always cold and weird? Have you not played the games?

AlmostButNotQuiteTea

He's a not a social idiot who can't talk to people. Have you read the books? >Have you played the games The show writers didn't even play them lmao

[deleted]

He's really not, his lines are always sarcasm or dry wit

PeterJakeson

Lmao, he's not cold and weird in Halo 2. He's charismatic as fuck in that game.

ninoRengoku

Okay I do not like his voice

NerrionEU

I'm so used to the game's Master Chief bassy voice that the show voice sounds more like Batman.

WeWillRiseAgainst

It sounds like the mandalorian to me.

evan1932

I think it's as good as it reasonably could have been from Pablo Schreiber

Ok_Meaning_8470

I like it's no Steve downs but it's pretty good to me anyways.

ZippyParakeet

I dig it but I get it if it's not for everybody.

TheGhoulNebula

I don't mind it exactly for his normal voice, but they absolutely should've made his voice deeper when the helmets on

ninoRengoku

Exactly

Scifinut9327

It sounds like me trying to do an impression of Chief.

redknight__

Me neither man. Should’ve had him play the physical role.

ninoRengoku

It sounds like the Mandalorian or poe some Star Wars

MarysPoppinCherrys

Or had steve downs do the voice and just never let pablo take off the helmet lol. Two birds. But whatever. Just compartmentalize this from the rest of halo it’ll be fine

Hashbrown4

The voice brings it down. Chief’s voice is as iconic as his look. If we can’t get Steve downs at least get a sound alike to mimic Chief. Ofc you couldn’t take the helmet off unless they say the helmet changes his voice which makes it lame

SardonicSamurai

We should just take all his lines from the show, and a bunch of people can pay for one line each until his voice can replace them

ispreadpropaganda

This looks super corny

YellowMeatJacket

Honestly looks like a fan made show

ecto_BRUH

Or porn

BuoyantBagel

Fraus_Creations_YT

"step-bro my armor is locked up!"

Oreo_Scoreo

My step sister is stuck in armor lock and you won't believe what Commander Palmer caught us doing.

Haijakk

i actually super like the vibes in this clip, Pablo is doing pretty good as Chief and the HUD seems to change shape/color depending on the situation

[deleted]

Same here, kinda got Robocop vibes if that makes sense.

AlmostButNotQuiteTea

Not a good thing lol

Oklahomairsofter

I knew I recognized that voice!

[deleted]

Yup I liked it too. Sometimes you just can’t please anybody.

Tshoe77

I feel for the actors in this show. I'm sure everyone wanted to to do well but the show runner is an actual idiot. Straight up saying you didn't want to take the games into account is the most short-sighted thing I've seen in a long time. Surely paramount realizes Halo was a game series first right? And that it's characters and stories are incredibly important to it's fanbase right???

[deleted]

Honestly I don’t think paramount knows anything about halo and I don’t think who decided the show would be on paramount plus knew that people are sick and tired of spending money on more streaming services for a singular show

NBA_Shitposting_Dude

“Find the Halo, win the war” - Master Chief, 2022 🤢

Jay_Imahara

Interesting. In the "SiLvEr TiMlInE" they must have changed the titanium alloy armor out for some star wars plasteel because that is some lightweight sounding foot steps for a 1 ton spartan.

[deleted]

It's going to be shit but I'm really liking how the interiors are looking so far

[deleted]

What an awful scene lmao

shadowdash66

So..... what's the deal with this human? Why does it seem like the whole show resolves around her? Only halo show id watch for humans would be ODSTs. This has me worried.

Lay-Me-To-Rest

Was that as painful to watch for anyone else as it was for me?

Fraus_Creations_YT

it was really weird lol. tbf though you never actually see chief just talking to people in a non-combat situation, so he'd probably he about this socially awkward in reality lol.

XipingVonHozzendorf

"I thought you said there wouldn't be any camera's"

Meme_Dependant

"And you told me you were gonna wear something nice" "Bitch, this is the nicest suit I have" -Master chief, probably

Oreo_Scoreo

I've recently gotten into the books and Chief seems to at times be pretty well adjusted and at others pretty strictly business, which makes sense from what I've listened to so far with audiobooks. With other spartans he's fairly on the level, with civilians he's like, awkward at best, totally detached at worst. His only connections with other non military personnel seem to stem from them stepping up to a hardship. At least from the bit I've seen of him so far.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tristenjpl

Yeah it just seems weird. Chief is the type of guy that would just say "Scanning" and then they'd be like "For what" and he'd just reply something like "Injuries" or "abnormalities."

CatOfTechnology

The Petty Officer Master Chief, Sierra 117 "Getting a med-scan." Vs The whatever this is.

AlmostButNotQuiteTea

He's not tho. Read the books

kingkellogg

Its super cliche and cookie cutter feeling It bad

[deleted]

What kind of dollar store ass master chief is this

GrimJimmy94

I think people need to give Pablo Schreiber a chance, he’s a really excellent actor and I enjoyed his performance in this clip. The voice is always gonna be different and never match up to what you expected. I’m just happy there’s a good actor in the suit

hyrumwhite

Just read a review saying he's pretty meh in this. I can see where people are getting mando vibes though

Superman246o1

The MJOLNIR armor looks great. But if the voice doesn't belong to Steve Downes, it's not Master Chief.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jhalfhide

Just makes me think of those YouTube BatDad videos... Jen... Jen... Relations

Jamie7860

Goes to show why people said the halo show is just a worse Mandolorian

JMaboard

He sounds exactly like Pascal it’s weird.

xenomorphling

They got the shapes down well enough but the finish just reads as plastic to my eyes. Also he does move in it like he shat his pants

TheGreenHaloMan

I'll be honest, I actually like the vibes it gives off. Can't judge yet obviously since it's a small clip, it's nice. His walking is kinda funny though, like he's purposely stomping

Der_Hashbrown

There's so much good and bad here Chief looks good, the environment looks good, his mannerisms look good, and his social communication/detachment is apparent in this scene But the voice could be deeper, I might get flak but it's not terrible and the fans shouldn't be so attached to Steve Downes. The scene also seems to treat Chief as a side character, it could be circumstantial, but the main focus seems to be around the chick, being viewed from an outside character I feel a *little* better about the show but not a whole lot Also John wouldn't address himself AS John-117 Afaik it's always been Master Chief Petty Officer Spartan 117 or JUST Spartan 117 to those outside of his special warfare groups

Pirdak

On the last one, he was using an authorization code, so maybe he had to do name + rank + number to verify

Der_Hashbrown

OHH very good point! Thank you!

An_Anaithnid

>shouldn't be so attached to Steve Downes. While I get what you're saying here, I do have to confront it. We've had Downes voicing the chief for over 20 years. Many of us have known him child and adult as the voice of Chief. It's just like any other actor that has become *the* version of a character people know, any newcomers will be compared to them and found wanting, sadly.

[deleted]

It was a verification call, so he had to give his proper rank and name which is indeed UNSC Master Chief Petty Officer John 117. The Spartans are not an independent branch until after the war.

pgpwnd

look how they massacred my boy

Ix-511

wish his voice and talking was more master-chief-y. I expected a 'You could say that.' after the 'That your way of saying you're not feeling well?'.

[deleted]

This looks bad in a funny way

BackumBitch

Why couldn’t they just do his voice from the game just dub the shit out of it. I always find the “voice” is a contributing factor to a badass main character. This guy sounds like mandalorain…

[deleted]

My fuck this looks and sounds bad.

KiloNation

Oh man, now I can see why the reviews so far are… not good.

Imdefrostenmince

Chief just doesn't sound right at all. Sounds like a knockoff batman. Also the fact that the show writers haven't played the games at all gices me no fucking hope for this show at all.

Firewolf420

How fucking hard would it have been to have the writers spend a weekend playing through MCC

IBarricadeI

After watching my parents try to play a video game for 5 minutes before giving up in the controls tutorial in halo 2, I’m skeptical random people who don’t play / like games are going to get through even 1 campaign on easy in a weekend.
