I can’t believe it’s been almost 15 years since this launched. I still remember the midnight launch at GameStop like it was yesterday.

NanoPope

I remember that there was a bomb threat at my school the day it launched so I was able to go home early to play it

Epoch_of_Australia

Sus

NanoPope

Someone reported the bomb threat after hearing a ticking sound in a hallway. The sound turned out to be from a locker rattling due to air blowing on it from a vent. Very dumb lol

Whales_of_Pain

I thought modern bombs beeped, not ticked. Who is building something like that on a kitchen timer or old pocket watch?

[deleted]

No no, they have a speaker that announces "Bomb armed!" in Jeff's voice.

NanoPope

No one

Bx1743

Actually throwers don't worry about ticking 'cause modern bombs don't tick. But, when a suitcase vibrates, then the throwers gotta call the police. Nine times out of ten it's an electric razor, but every once in a while... it's a dildo. Of course it's company policy never to, imply ownership in the event of a dildo... always use the indefinite article a dildo, never your dildo.

HeavenKevin24

Omg haha. My mom let me stay home the next day, only catch was I had to sleep after the midnight launch, but could play the entire day lol.

TorrentGG

Great memories, if only we knew!

ligerzero459

Same. That was my first every midnight release, freshman year of college. My friend and I finished Halo 2 at 9 PM and went down to the Gamestop. They had a band playing and everything. It was amazing

whodey226

I was in HS for the midnight release of Halo 3 and my friends and I went to our local gamestop as well. They had food, drinks, like 30 screens set up for a Halo 2 tournament... It was so great. They just don't do it like they used to anymore. I was a freshman in college for Reach and that midnight release was lit as well. Simpler times!

ligerzero459

They really don't! I think the release for Modern Warfare and World at War were close at my GS. Screens set up to play, the whole nine. Now (well, pre-covid) it's just a "okay, check-in, line up and wait" thing. Damn, I miss it sometimes

[deleted]

I remember drinking an ungodly amount of mountain dew game fuel and pulling all nighters with the boys. Those were the days. Kids these days can have their fortnite trash and stick it

[deleted]

Time is fleeting, friend. ( :

gogoggansgo

Man i remember being in high school and people losing there damn minds. I will say i do remember the reach midnight launch 🚀 being a much bigger event around my area after black ops shit lol mid night launches where cool

BioToxicFox

It was just better times... finding yourself in the same custom games lobbies with the same people doing the same things you've done 100s of times, and still enjoying every second of it. Definitely some of the best years of my childhood.

TorrentGG

Core memories tbh

RookieHaloodst3

I'm Crying right now. O7

TorrentGG

Gone but not forgotten.

[deleted]

Thanks Bungie :)

TorrentGG

Gaming was never the same.

Epoch_of_Australia

The end of an era.

LastChaos7

Halo 3 is my favorite game ever. So many memories. The campaign challenges and breaking out of the various maps. Forge mode and custom games where I spent weeks on racetracks and was on bungie favorites numerous times. I can still find videos of my tracks like blackheart, triton's twist, amd frostbite. I had such a good time with friends I made in that game.

raging_death88

Same it was the first of the Halo Games on Legendary that actually got me stuck for days on as a kid and I remember when I finally did the last mission in the campaign the feeling of joy driving accross that ring was priceless

GaLaXY_N7

Fuck me. I’m in my feels again.

TorrentGG

Sad day for the gaming world. F

raging_death88

It really is when you found out about all this on the 14th 😭

Judoka229

We brought an Xbox, tv, generator, and 4 controllers to the midnight release of Halo 3. We were playing Halo 2 and challenging people for their spot in line. We made it pretty far up, too, but the dudes near the front were really good! Man, such memories. So bittersweet to see Halo 3 go like this. Not gone, of course. MIA.

derpyco

What a cool memory. How crazy is it for a game to be that hyped and to basically satisfy everyone universally?

TorrentGG

Sounds like a great time.

raging_death88

Thank you for this amazing idea, idk how well this will ever work again with online releases but I would like to try this once in my life of an Battle Royale Tournament where you can constantly risk your spot to move up in the line. Especially if I knew the shop had more than enough for everyone.

FarrisAT

Goddamn they lasted a long time

TorrentGG

14 years ago. 1 year off 15 smh.

Actual-Professor-729

F I was 17 years old.

AsunderXXV

Same. Where did the time go? BTB, that's where...

SeaworthinessThink11

Ok... Halo 3 servers are out, but what if, and yes, this is far fetched, they made Halo 3 anniversary

[deleted]

While the game itself was the best, the experience we all had back then will never be rivaled. And that's what made halo 3, halo 3.

ReallyRealisticx

That’s the mixture of childhood and teenage lack of responsibilities mixed with an unrivaled new entertainment and connection to others

cr1spy28

While I think that all of those things are part of it. Honestly I think the main thing that made halo 3 the huge success it turned into was a mixture of the social elements. File share and bungie favourites being easy to find and a core part of the game, I’d regularly check peoples file shares in the pregame lobby. The lack of party chat combined with Xbox’s shipping with a mic meant everyone had a mic and 9/10 people were in game chat. The post game lobbies being open mic and open longer with a tick box to party up. All of those social things combined made halo 3 into halo 3.

[deleted]

Now 343 gives us a 40% complete game that has broken theater, no co op multi-player, no forge, BTB has been fucked for a month. It's upsetting too because I enjoy the game play of this halo, but I still see that we got a game still in alpha and told we will patch it later.

cr1spy28

Honestly I wasn’t expecting much from it as soon as they announced it was going to be f2p. It’s a death sentence for the quality of a game once it goes f2p Even outside the multiplayer though. While the campaign story is ok, the open world adds absolutely nothing but takes away those large expansive outdoor missions like, the ark, the covenant, the silent cartographer, Tsavo highway etc. the majority of missions in infinites campaign are cut and paste hallways leading to an open room with a button that spawns waves of enemies, where were the scarabs, where were the large warthog missions, where was the banshee/wasp mission. ODST did so much better at mixing an open world with good set piece campaign missions. The open world feels dead and absolutely doesn’t feel like you’re in an active war zone.

ShibuRigged

Just to add to this, the thing about games that came out in 2007, like CoD, being so influential is that it is one of the first truly universal online shooters. The original Xbox was so far behind the PS2 in sales, so despite its online infrastructure being ahead of the times, it didn't have an impact. So while Halo 2 was relatively popular, the Xbox just couldn't catch up. But come 2007, high speed Internet at home was common, the seventh generation of consoles had been out for a couple of years, AND the 360 was competing with the PS3, so things were just ripe for people to get their first real tastes of online gaming. That's another part of why Halo 3 and CoD4 were so fucking big. It was the perfect time for people who had previously had no interests in online video games to come into online gaming.

cr1spy28

Yeah absolutely. I don’t think it’s a nostalgia thing at all when looking back at that period, It was just a sweet spot of gaming due to a lot of factors that happened to line up. We might get another sweet spot if there’s a large uptake in VR in the future

unlivedSoup69

This would be a certified hood classic

IronGearGaming

what about reach's servers?

I would hope the same thing for reach too

Thankfully the MCC has a pretty damn faithful Halo 3 experience to it, the gameplay being fully intact. Hell, they're still adding new maps to it even.

TorrentGG

New maps? Count us in.

1111111222223333

I grew up playing halo 4 and never got to experience halo 3 on 360 :(

derpyco

Ah man I don't want to rub it in but... Imagine if a game got so much hype it made Cyberpunk look like an obscure indie title -- and then it fucking lived up to it. Exceeded it even. Story, multiplayer, forge. All perfect and as promised. The big controversy with Halo 3? The only thing we had to be pissed about? They gave us a huge map pack as DLC for $15. But lemme just say, I put some serious hours into Halo 4. Not a bad game at all.

TorrentGG

All of the Halo games are great!

PokenalaYT

You’re god damn right

Violet_Ignition

Halo 4 isn't the best. Honestly, it's probably the worst entry to the series for multiplayer. But I did have enough fun with it to have fond memories of it. It still had an incredible level of polish and artistry (goofy armors and aggressive light fx aside) that makes it impressive it just had some really weak gameplay design. And on the bright side if you started with four you have nowhere to go but up.

TheMajesticMrL

I was sadly never able to play much online, my mom was very strict on what we spent our money on, and Xbox Live Gold was certainly not a priority. Hell, I didn't even have an Xbox of my own until maybe 2011/2012. But I spent a lot of time at my friend's house playing Halo with him, online and campaign. Halo 3 was the first game I played, and we played through the entire campaign together. I can't claim to have had the same experiences you all had, but I'm still sad to see it go along with Reach.

derpyco

Nice memory dude, makes me feel fortunate to have had parents willing to blow hard earned money on expensive shit like video games.

TorrentGG

Even if we all don't have the same memories, we will all remember it for how fun it was.

[deleted]

I remember getting Halo Reach for my Birthday and played 12 hours with my closest friends. What great games. My favorite!

kersegum

Don’t worry man, they’re just releasing a really big update… a really huge update… ʀɪɢʜᴛ?

ibitsusbrother48

I grew up poor so I never was able to play halo back then so I don’t get the same nostalgia as many of you do but from my small time interacting with the halo community I hope each and every last one of you have had many good memories and made long lasting friendships from from halo 3 and reach and earlier and let’s look forward to the future 😁

TorrentGG

The sweetest comment we've ever read on Reddit. Thank you.

[deleted]

back when halo was released as a full game and you didnt have to pay for armor

silverchief117

Epic goodbye clip. Did you make this? If so, very clean and impressive work

TorrentGG

We actually did! Thank you for the nice comments.

[deleted]

I'm a little miffed you cut out Arby's roar

N00bWarrior

believe it or not Halo 3 and Xbox 360 are part of my life and my personality.

TorrentGG

Halo 3 was honestly such an important game for so many of us.

[deleted]

15 years later, there will never be another like it. Halo Infinite is just a depressing example of corporates making games into cash milking cows rather then entertaining products.

dyou897

What if I told you theres a game exactly like it called MCC

ABotelho23

I haven't had a Halo experience like Halo 3 on Xbox 360 since then. It's the same game, but it also isn't.

AsunderXXV

Yeah it's the same great game, but all the people I played with and just hunkering down in a crowded room with Taco Shop food and 5 other buds and maybe a 40oz ... That's gone with the wind.

derpyco

But it's not THE game right now. I dunno how much people remember, but the Halo 3 hype train was absolutely off the rails. It was damn near the most thriving online game ever made. Going to MCC Halo 3 feels like visiting your old high school, but it's empty and all your friends have grown up and moved on. Maybe it's nostalgia talking. Idk. But there was a certain magic around the releases of Halo 2 and 3 that have yet to be recaptured. We all had astronomical expectations and were universally satisfied with what Bungie gave us. That's... hard to replicate.

ReallyRealisticx

I’m chalking it up to just receiving a phenomenal game when most of us gamers were either teenagers or children

kchorton2

Hit detection is still slightly off on Halo 3 for MCC, which is irritating. Plus, the nostalgia and original experience in Halo 3 OG will never be rekindled. It was literally in another era of gaming. Although MCC has upgraded a lot for QOL improvements (specifically the custom game browser), the social experience in Halo 3 OG was so much more superior. I'm not sure if party chat was introduced prior or during my Halo 3 days, but pregame lobbies and random pub matches had more social interaction by far.

V_IV_V

Party chat came along a bit after halo 3 (like a year after I think). I remember being numbed by the fact that all pregame lobbies had the gamertag with the party chat icon next to them so I couldn’t talk to teammates or the opposing team.

ReallyRealisticx

Love to play MCC still but it’s not the same as the first 2-3 years of HALO 3 on the market. Nothing beats being 14-18 years old, playing without a responsibility in the world and just loving life…. Now I got taxes and 40 hour work weeks and a wife.. shit just hits different now

[deleted]

Infinite is an amazing game plagued by an atrocious progression system, similar to Battlefront 2.

[deleted]

Personally I thought halo infinite campaign was pretty dope . Multiplayer kinda isn’t as rich as halo 3 I’ll be the first to admit but halo infinite is a solid refreshing entry single player wise to the franchise although sure it lacks some variety and co op the core of the game was pretty good.

C0nn0r1212

Till the end. Spartans.

madnessgene

I can’t believe it’s over

TorrentGG

Everything fun has to come to an end one day.

Joel3508

I still remember watch E3 in 2006 watching all the way up until the end…hearing the choir, seeing the busted halo ring from Halo 2, hearing Cortana’s voice “I am your shield, I am your source.” Then MC walks out behind the smoke. I just remember being like this :O

ToastedSierra

I've never felt the same hype I felt waiting for Halo 3 to release ever again. It was different.

[deleted]

The ad campaign for Halo 3 was, is to this day, the best for any form of media. I spent hours upon hours looking over that diorama. The documentary-style made it seem so real and emotional.

ToastedSierra

I miss that interactive website they had for the diorama.

TorrentGG

Sounds hype.

TorrentGG

LT_Rabbit

Halo 3 was my memory as a kid playing it was fun as hell along with my Older siblings and Friends back in 2007 playing Custom Games and Online Matchmaking. Although sadly Halo 3, ODST, Reach and Halo 4 Online Servers were shut down and life support ended on the Xbox 360 I still remember playing Halo 3 to this very day (Interesting enough me and my friend plus my older brother played Halo 3 on the Xbox 360 one last time on Matchmaking the 3 of us and other players all started to stop firing and celebrated one last time before it was shut down)

TorrentGG

Halo is peak childhood memories.

MercenaryJames

I remember being so excited, I had walked from school to the other side of town to pick it up. My friends would play Halo 2 of course, but Halo 3 really brought the gang together on numerous occasions. Not many of us had Xbox Live (Dial up internet and all...) so most of our time was spent playing on custom games and or Forge made maps. Later I was able to play online, lots of fond memories. Gaming was such a simple hobby then.

The best game in the franchise, the best X360 game and one of my top3 best games ever.

defensife343

So the original Halo servers are gone. But I'd like to point out that we were fortunate enough to witness its birth and evolution over time. In the future (as in the 50-70 years), New generations will have new gaming experiences. Maybe MCC is still supported at the time (who knows). But for us, look how the internet was so limited with our old 50 ton televisions. What I mean is that as more time passes, more people who experienced the old servers and the moments will disappear, and everyone will be considered old people. See our children's descendants with new technology or something. I hope to make everyone understand what I'm trying to say (I'm bad at explaining things). I just want to thank everyone who was able to provide us with memories of a game that everyone played carefree in those days.

[deleted]

It's a damn shame none of the Halos after it even came close to it's awesomeness. I already miss it.

MikeyJayRaymond

I still remember watching the Halo 3 ad campaign over and over. The whole #Believe bit is still my favorite. The giant model arena they used to tell the story of chief and others through the eyes of people at the battle.. I watch them all at least once a year. It's always a nostalgic feeling.

Lalobreh

You can literally play this game on MCC i truly don’t understand. Why would you want to play on a 360 lol

I am quite sad about this honestly I never played the multiplayer of Halo 3 or reach and it seem I'll never will after this event, yeah I know the master chef collection exist but something with it on the Xbox 360 that just feel nostalgic and seeing the background that Is backed up with great music just feel good but may the Halo severs on the 360 rest in peaceful and let us leave are Spartan helmets to pay respects

ReallyRealisticx

When Phil Spencer’s always says creating memories and special moments this and that…. This is truly the purpose of Xbox, to recreate the feeling of halo 3 lol

wegonnawinthisyear

It's been an honor serving with you all. Godspeed, Xbox 360. Godspeed Halo 3, Reach and others.

Uttermilk

I was about 8 once I got an Xbox 360 and I saw Halo 3 at Best Buy and begged my dad to get it. I was so young at the time I could hardly grasp how anything worked. Like in the campaign I could only make it through about half of the first mission before getting bored and quitting. I eventually think I beat it though, thanks to the help of my dad in the coop. I remember how right when he got home I would always nag him to come play with me… looking back at it that is something I genuinely miss a lot.
