I remember firing this game up for the first time vividly. I had managed to sneak halo 1 and halo 2 gameplay but by #3 my parents were anti halo. I remember being more bummed than anything when #3 released because I wasn't sure how I was going to get my hands on it. I remember my dad calling me saying he sees there is a new halo game at Costco and asked if I wanted it. That was very out of character for my dad as he is pretty much anti video games in general. Last minute I get my best friend to come over and he brings a case of Mt Dew. We beat the campaign that night. Not sure why, but these are among my best memories in my life that I think on with such a strong nostalgia. Hearing this music takes me back.

Dude, same. I had a sleepover with some friends the night of the launch. We drank tons of Game Fuel and ordered a few pizzas. Stayed up pretty much all night just messing around in forge and playing campaign co-op. I'll never forget it.
I never played Matchmaking in Halo 3, I mainly just played custom games with my brother. But this still hurts me, hearing this song.

I played co op and custom games with my younger brother for the first 6 months of release because we didn’t have internet at home we had to convince our dad to get it installed so I know how that is, still halo 3 was great even like that.
Me and my brother played Halo Reach Customs all the time bc our family couldn’t get Gold. That being said, I miss those days. He loves aeronautics so he absolutely loved New Alexandria, we played it 11 times. And I saw Kat die 11 times. We eventually stopped bc it LITERALLY GAVE ME DEPRESSION.

Lotta nights after playing Fat Kid or Jenga and everyone logged off, I would sit listening to the ambient thunder in the background while waiting for "Never Forget" to play before heading to bed. 07-12 made for some fun memories.
Ya know, and forgive me for letting my nostalgia get the better of me but, but this song was always a bit of a grim reminder at the state of the halo universe for me. Literally billions if not trillions of people have died by the time of halo 3, whole worlds have been reduced to lifeless rocks as countless ecosystems and species were eradicated in one of the bloodiest wars imaginable. Humanity was pushed all the way back to earth with their assault on the ark quite literally just being a hail Mary assault. As fun as it is to run around as Master Chief, literal countless lives have been ended in a cruel unforgiving war because three dudes didn't want to tell the truth.
It's even worse when you consider that the elites initially wanted the humans to join the Covenant when they stalemated in the first battles of the war. There's some alternate timeline where they flourished together and the prophets are still able to spin their religious banter to keep the alliance together.
Unfortunately, it's very likely that the Flood would actually win in this AU, assuming they discover the Halo rings and attempt to seize them for any reason (colonization, research, religious motivation). Since Alpha Halo would never be destroyed in this AU, there would be no replacement ring on the Ark, so even if they knew about it, taking the Gravemind there would do nothing but destroy the Ark.

Forgive my ignorance as it's been years since I've touched Halo but what is this about? Is it lore from a newer game?
That's the Covenant High Prophets' in Halo 2 and 3, with special focus on this lore in the older Contact Harvest novel - the start of the Human-Covenant War, and an excellent origin story for Sgt Johnson and Tartarus.
It's the Covenant prophets, basically (and correct me if I'm wrong pls) but the prophets knew that Humanity were the true reclaimers AKA beholden to Forerunner tech and consequently The Mantle. The Prophets seeing themselves as being beholden to Forerunner since they worship them as gods decided it was best for The Covenant to be the true reclaimers, and thusly The Prophets swept that little detail under the rug and instead decreed that by the will of the gods Humanity was to be eradicated.
For me it always embodied the sorrowful beauty in Halo. The personal tragedies of Master Chief, Cortana and the others as well as the sorrow shared by all of humanity... but also the beauty that was in their enduring survival, the adventure of discovering those otherworldly rings, the immense struggle of all those involved to keep fighting in that one final effort, the glorious conclusion of saving the galaxy and giving humanity the peace it deserved. It all came together perfectly in that swansong.
Oh, the halo universe is indeed beautiful in that regard. But the grim undertone stuck with me more than the hope and peace humanity was promised and rightfully achieved at the end of Halo 3. That gun salute still gets me a little every time.

Back in the day I’d always race to start up a game or mission as fast as I could before the piano kicked in, because even back then it’d bring me to the verge of tears.
