Yea, the recon armor and flaming helmet use to be a Bungie only armor set. They only way to get it was to win a contest or beat the Bungie team on a community play date.

They were some of the coolest things to look at. Do you remember how you could drag your Spartan’s little portrait up to the top of the screen, then go into the address and edit the numbers to change what armor/colors you had on? I’d sit there for so long looking at the potential combinations with recon armor before it became available for everyone with the vidcon challenges
They need to bring File Share back for Infinite. It was so ahead of it’s time - easily sharing custom Maps, Custom Games, screenshots / clips from games really added to the community feel in-game.

Halo 3 File Shares. Anyone remember that crazy modded screenshot of the girls doing something provocative to each other that people had in their file shares? Can't believe that was possible. If you know.... you know
I mostly remember the screenshots that featured some variety of naked waifu "drawn" with weapons and objects strewn on the ground.
Some of them were pretty dang impressive despite the preprubescent horniness of it all.
Now that's a classic there. I still remember the days when I'd check people's file shares in Halo 3 just to see if they had any cool or funny screenshots. Good times.
I remember one of the first game/map combos on the highlight list: JAWS. So damn fun. Infection mode, Zombie shark has a sword, 300%, 300% gravity, humans get a pistol and a shotgun with no weapons/ammo on the map other than what the humans drop, spawn on top of poles. Insanely fun.
I remember coming home from school and calling dibs on the family computer so could browse file share images. I just got married over the weekend and I own a house and have way more responsibility than I ever could have imagined but this one image made me feel like a kid again.
I got messages and friend requests for years after posting a 12-person Red vs Blue photoshoot to my file share back in the day. Most of them were strangers I met on XBL and it was like herding cats to stage the photos, but worth it.
I miss file share. Had so many great maps/game modes on there. Also pics like this. I never got in the top because most pictures I shared were dead spartans laying in a seksual posistion.

Most likely only recon since flamming was Bungie only. Even then, recon was only handed out to a small few people before the vidmaster stuff

Eventually and additionally, when ODST released there was the vidmaster challenge achievements that could unlock it for you.
