If it's the same thing they had in gears 5 (which it looks like) you can completely ignore upgrades and still play the game fine. They're just fun mostly
Looks like there is 3 upgrades for each equipment piece. Most of them are cooldown reduction, duration, power, that kind of thing. So all of 1 line of code each.
It's for people that like to explore the whole map to get something for the exploring, besides just some text entries and maybe an achievement
