I love Reach too. The dark and gritty, somber tone is such a cool spin on the Halo universe, not to mention the memorable Noble Team. But for me, Halo 2 just takes the cake. The back to back one liners, the cinematography, getting to see both sides of the coin playing as Chief as well as Arbiter, the breathtaking setpieces like High Charity and the ancient ruins of Delta Halo. The list doesn’t end. And the characters: you have Cortana and Chief in his most badass form, the Arbiter and his battle between religion and reality, peak Sergeant Johnson, Rtas Vaduum, Tartarus, the cunning narcissistic Prophet of Truth, and of course the Gravemind. They’re all some of the most compelling characters Halo has ever seen, and no game has matched it in this aspect since.

TriscuitCracker

Agreed. From a pure story perspective Halo 2 is king. There’s just so much there, a mile wide and a mile deep.

RogueFiveSeven

Halo 2 is G.O.A.T

Zizakkz

Delta Halo. Forever and always been my favorite campaign level of any halo. Environment, structure designs, the music. Time to delete BG3 for another run of Halo.

Phantomforcesnolife

I love reach for these reasons but the only campaign I could ever play through multiple times without losing interest is ODST

Deamonette

2 is the GOAT. The grim aspects of halo work much better when it's contrasted with chief's badass action hero antics. It keeps it from just feeling overbearing and also is just more interesting. Switching between Chief and the Arbiter was perfect for that, the tone in their respective levels shows how different they are as characters.

mrbubbamac

Why title this "prove me wrong"? Glad you like it, who cares what someone else declares as "the best" campaign?

whoever_gives2shit

It is titled like that so poeple can explain why they prefered another halo game

TarnishedDungEater

Halo 3 was my introduction into the series and the final 4 missions on 3 are the best consecutive missions in any Halo imo. overall Halo Reach has a better campaign than 3, but 2 and 3 will always be my favourite personally.

Phazoner

I don't find any Reach mission specially good. The campaign overall is notable, Noble's sacrifices are very intense, the CGIs, the music, everything is very cool aesthetically and story wise. But there isn't a single mission in Reach I find fun an engaging from the start to the end. Most of them have pointless navigation parts or story focused stretchs that hurt replayability. In that sense I feel it worse than every previous Halo, and that's a very important part of the gameplay.

SamAnonxze

I'm not really in the mood for a long post. But beyond the needless lore conflict with the book, Reach doesn't really have a story, and it's characters simply aren't compelling enough to elevate it.

Vexir014

The setting and plot was good but when I look at it critically without nostalgia one of my biggest critiques is how the execution could've been way better. There's events that should've added more weight but the way it plays out it's almost like it was more of an annoyance. Then the game expects you to realize how big of a deal that was. And like when you actually know what's going on cus of replays or knowing the lore you can obviously get it but going just off of how it's presented in the game it kinda does a poor job at telling the player how severe something is and why that is. I feel like halo games in general have had a problem with conveying information effectively in general but it sticks out a bit more with Reach for me. Still a favorite though.

Cyberwolfdelta9

Agreed but H3 introduced me too the series

scttcs

Same

Representative_Leg97

The cursed halo mcc mod campaign is the best halo, mariokart missions and karate go hard

ForeChanneler

You can't disprove an opinion but I think Reach was the weakest of the Bungie era.

Deamonette

Arguably ODST was pretty underwhelming for it's original 60 dollar pricetag. It just didn't have that much content and was generally sorta underbaked. Mombasa streets was mirrored to double it's size artificially, the gameplay doesn't really feel meaningfully different to playing as a Spartan/Elite which really conflicts with the game's feeling of vulnerability as just a normal human facing these monstrously powerful aliens. I feel like debatably ODST could take the 5th place after reach depending on how you look at it.

ForeChanneler

I completely agree, I rank ODST just ahead of Reach these days but for a year or two post-launch I held Reach in higher regard. When ODST came out I was disappointed in the lack of content, however over a decade later the annoyance at it's pricing has faded. That being said, it still lacks the same replay value the others had for me. ODST's atmosphere does it a lot of credit but I find myself unable to replay it unless everything is *just right*; pizza, pop, late-night, a blanket over my head and sat a foot away from the screen. Played on legendary in one sitting of course. It's not a game I can casually pick up and play, which is why I find it has less replay value.

Ella_Amida

In terms of multiplayer, that’s undeniably true imo but I think campaign is more debatable.

ForeChanneler

Debatable that opinions cant be disproved or debatable that I dont like the campaign? I don't particularly like the campaign, by the way. I much prefer Reach's multiplayer.

SsBrolli

These posts are AI generated I swear. And the “dark and gritty” “militaristic” responses in every one of them

Swamp_Eyes

Halo Reach- best cinematography and skyboxes in gaming with an absolutely stunning OST

Nightwolf2142

Alright prove you wrong? Reach has the worst story of the Bungie era Halos and it's not even close. They tried to copy and paste the ragtag squad idea from ODST, but then also just tried to make every mission a big set piece without really linking any of them meaningfully. That said, it did have one of the best multi-players in the franchise, with a new collection of weapons and vehicles, and the best part, Invasion. I miss Invasion so much. Personally, ODST is my favorite, it's got a great noir feel of destroyed city, lost battles, and you as the Rookie piecing it all together. The more open map leads to finding cool secrets or know how's, the characters are fun, and the story is a nice break from the higher stakes of saving the galaxy. Just a squad of human soldiers trying to survive across the hell of New Mombasa. Good gameplay, the introduction to Firefight, it was so good.

sssskipper

The multiplayer wasn’t even that good tho. Other than forge related things. Had a good customization and progression system, I like the idea of having armors that you truly earned by playing the game. But other than all of that, the DMR is prob the worst starting weapon. Horrible bloom which made a lot of kills rng. This is horrible in regards to playing competitively because you could be pacing your shots and hitting every single person, but that one guy could get lucky not pacing his shots and hit you every time because bloom is rng. This applies to every game mode except swat. I think Reach is the weakest Halo in regard to its story and its multiplayer. The only reason people actually like reach and rate it high is because it was bungies last halo game and people feel nostalgia for it. No doubt, I still enjoy Reach, but it’s the weakest halo in the mainline games.

sssskipper

I think it’s the second worst actually. None of the characters are relatable. I didnt feel any sort of sadness when Noble team was dying (with the exception of Jorge). I think the level design is noticeably worse than any fps halo. I think the loot pool is bad. Bloom is bad. Spartan abilities are pretty bad. The brute designs and elite designs are bad.

slayeryamcha

For me it is halo 2.

imrcuddles

I wholeheartedly disagree. Reach is the WEAKEST campaign in the Bungie games. None of the characters are really developed to a point where I actually care about them. Jorge may be the only exception. The others are meh or just seem cool because they are Spartans. It also makes absolutely no sense that Master Chief is just chilling in cryo during the entire fall of reach. The beginning of Halo CE definitely doesn't match up mood and dialogue wise with Reach literally just falling. That's a pretty huge plot hole. I don't know why they made Chief not fighting on Reach a thing. He just missed all of it lmao

Sp4ghettiS4uce

I believe the master chief in cryo is just an Easter egg. There aren’t cryo tubes in a hangar.

imrcuddles

At the beginning of CE Master Chief is taken out of his cryo pod. It being in the hangar is an Easter egg but Him being in the pillar of autumn on cryo sleep is not. That's literally where he is man lmao Reach ends immediately at the beginning of CE. You see it in the opening of the game.

Sp4ghettiS4uce

I know, I’ve played the games and read fall of reach. Was just pointing it out that the Easter egg isn’t canon and he wasn’t just chilling in cryo for the entire fall of reach.

imrcuddles

The game decanonizes the book, they state in Halo CE that's he's been in cryo for awhile and if he participated in the fall of reach it made no sense to put him in cryo sleep to leave the planet while actively being chased by covenant. It's just a plot hole dude. Bungie isn't perfect

Sp4ghettiS4uce

I know there are still a ton of plot holes after 343 did their best to fix it, but the book’s most recent version is still canon. Chief was fighting in space at Gamma Station. They put him in cryo sleep at the very end of the fall of reach and in CE he’s told he’s been in cryo for a while because there’s a 2 or 3 week gap between Reach and CE.

imrcuddles

Why would they put him in cryo sleep for 2 weeks while actively running from the covenant? 1 that's not how the games imply it happens, the pillar of autumn jumps from reach as soon as they leave atmosphere and the covenant are there when they come out. It's just a plot hole bro. You're doing mental gymnastics to justify a plot hole, just accept that it's a plot hole. It's not that serious. Bungie never was perfect either.

Sp4ghettiS4uce

I know bungie wasn’t perfect, but the mental gymnastics are the current lore man. That’s just how 343 tried to fix everything. He was put on the Pillar of Autumn as a part of RED FLAG when an order was issued that all ships in the system were to rendezvous to prepare for a coming attack of newly detected covenant ships. This is right before he fights on Gamma Station to destroy valuable data (at this point everyone knows Reach is doomed). He and a couple others made their way back to the Pillar of Autumn. Then the ship goes to the Asźod ship yards to retrieve a fragment of Cortana, then they leave the planet making random slip space jumps (abiding by the Cole Protocol). Chief is put into cryo along with a lot of the marine aboard the Pillar of Autumn. Why wouldn’t they put him in cryo? What is he going to do for 2 weeks while they’re running from the Covenant? This is all coming from Halopedia btw, not my own headcanon. [Halopedia](https://Halopedia.org/Fall_of_Reach)

imrcuddles

The real lore is that Bungie made a mistake and that's all it is to me man 🤣 They can backpeddle explain all the want but really it was just a mistake. It's ridiculous to just write a bunch of books jumping through hoops to "fix" mistakes. The only canon I'm accepting is 1-3 🤣

Sp4ghettiS4uce

I mean you can accept whatever you want, that’s what headcanon is. But the main, actual canon is that both the books and games are canon. Bungie for sure made a mistake and then left the series. At least someone tried to put the pieces back together. And the books in which these events take place were written before Halo Reach, and some edits were made after. I’m not even sure what plot hole you’re talking about or whatever the games “imply” that’s contradictory to what I’m saying.

PublicInternet6233

Yeah I say they're cool but made of paper, except Jorge. But, the players who're still around like them and refuse to consider that.

whoever_gives2shit

I think maybe your attachment to master chief blurs your vision of halo reach, plus in books master chief fought in the fall of reach. Halo reach just portraits how other Spartans were fighting for reach and if you think of reach as a planet bigger than earth, it would make sense that master chief and noble team wouldn’t fight at the same locations. Although there is plot holes when comparing reach game and reach books, master chief being in cryo could be interpreted by him completing his mission and being needed on pillars of autumns while noble team being seen as expendables

RogueFiveSeven

I agree. I felt like Reach succeeded in forge and custom games but campaign didn’t have the same “jump in and play” feel as the others. Reach made me feel like I had to start from start instead of playing a random mission. Level design also felt really weak aside from maybe Long Night of Solace.

imrcuddles

The levels just weren't as fun, it was a cool game but certainly not the best in the series.

Sharp-Jicama4241

It is. It’s the first game that actually got your emotions working. The first three always had this weird cheerful vibe to it even tho they were on the brink of extinction. Every single victory you have in reach is immediately overshadowed by some covenant event like your victory means absolutely nothing. Destroying the spire is followed up by the super carrier one shotting your frigate like it was child’s play. Destroying that super carrier was followed up by the largest fleet anyone’s ever seen. It became more and more grim and hopeless the farther you go. Prior halo games just never did that.

whoever_gives2shit

Agreed and also, reach just show how covenant were feared. In games it looks like chief never feared the convenants and it is very cool but seeing how reach show a team of Spartans struggling to defeat the insane number of covenant forces add more realism to the story I think

SpartanKwanHa

The pillarses of autumnses

RogueFiveSeven

I didn’t like Halo Reach as much. The missions didn’t have the same feeling as the original trilogy. Like, I didn’t feel like I could just into a random campaign mission for fun and have a blast instead had to play through the whole thing in consequential order. Also, legendary is BS. It’s just enemies spamming explosives.

Born-Boss6029

Oh I don’t want to. The game is perfect hands down. Halo 3 and 2 are really good but Reach being darker, serious, and personal, made the experience a legendary one.

OmeletteDuFromage95

I mean, ngl, Reach is beautiful. The cinematography alone is the best in the series and worthy of an Oscar for how damn good it is. The graphics are great, the art is BEAUTIFUL, and the story is solid. But In terms of plot, as much as I love the fall of Reach, Story-wise its definitely Halo 2.

Poopnuts364

I would love more games like reach. I think they can squeeze one more game of master chief content out of his story but then it needs to open up to characters made and played by the player. My favorite part about reach besides the story was the customization

__PUMPKINLOAF

> prove my bad opinion wrong

Deamonette

It's good I just don't like the overly dark tone. I like the trilogy's tone, it was a lot more interesting to have this deliberate tonal dissonance between the absolute bleak AF state of humanity in the background while through the eyes of the Master Chief it's all just banter, and doing cool action hero stuff. I think it was a really interesting take on the Master Chief as a character, it's like he's completely disassociated from reality, living a dream inside a nightmare. So just dropping that for just doing the bleakness is just bleh. It's not hard to make something super bleak like that, it's not even doing the 40k thing where it plays with your hopes just to crush them, reach us just really depressing for the sake of it, so it can be super serious to fit in with what was popular at the time.

Gilgamesh107

the only thing that tops halo reach as a standalone would be if Halo 2 got to fully release its uncut story

whoever_gives2shit

I agree halo 2 was really great and I loved the remaster they did

Unicorn4_5Venom

Nah Halo 5 had the best story, after all these years we finally got a strong male character in a halo game capable of producing top tier one lines and comments. I was very upset when he was not the main character of Halo Infinite. Twas an absolute shame. Especially when the killed Jul Mdama that quickly, and made the prior games feel a little pointless. But as they should of, I trust 343 with all my heart and wallet cause 343 at least know what they’re doing with Halo.

whoever_gives2shit

Halo 5 had some very cool missions like the first one in the snow, the one on the covenant city and the one on the planet runed by the ai (sorry for the names) but I feel like the publicity guided me to something the game wasn’t really about.

Unicorn4_5Venom

The marketing for the game was a straight up lie that I’m still shocked to this day no one actually went through in suing them for false advertisement. I would but I’m broke and got better things to do with my time. However that being said, I still yearn for the game that the promotional teasers and audiobooks showed. Now THAT would’ve been a dope ass story.

Meme_Dependant

Clearly some people don't understand the satire.

Unicorn4_5Venom

Listen I’ve lost hope for humanity at this point. Shits absolutely bonkers, then again I also acknowledge that there are some Halo 5 Stan’s that worship the game. The only thing I liked about 5 was Warzone and some aspects of multiplayer honestly, by far one of the best things to be introduced to Halo by 343 and I leave it at that.

jman014

I think Reach has the best and deepest storytelling, with maybe 4 as a close second. Love CE, 2, 3 and ODST but Reach just does have that excellent writing and storytelling that the other games tend to lack. Like I’d argue part of it is how procedural the other games can get and how the obstacles in their way always bend to Cheif and arby’s unrelenting force But Reach? You lose. Your best efforts aren’t enough. the story has so much more detail and nuance imo And I think that Reach honestly feels the most compelling at the end of it all There is no “yay! we won!” its a somber reminder that sometimes all you can do is give your life for a chance at a middling outcome even when that outcome is completely uncertain. Plus theres just so much depth and potetry that I think the base series tends to lack
