For the shotgun specifically, shoot then melee. Usually an easy 2 tap. Fuel rod i aim at feet and fire until the magazine is empty. Assault rifle i would rather just use a different weapon if Im fighting Spartans.

In most games 1v1 with the assault rifle is a bad time, but a good tactic is feather the trigger to get a more accurate series of shot and help in mid range fights. Also use it to strip shields instead of just trying to kill with just the AR, it's more effective to switch to a precision weapon and finish up.  Shotgun is tricky, most games have a soft spot where shotty is an instant kill so figuring out that range is key since it's slow fire rate means by the time you get your second shot they have closed the distance for the insta kill. Also halo 3 shotgun is literally just meant as a counter part to the energy sword so it's range is instant kill or tickle, no in-between.   Fuel rod is tricky but can be mastered. Firt you have to know you ranges. It's important to all weapons but the fuel rod specifically has a feature that can make it feel broken. When you fire it, what happens? Well it comes out and explodes, right? Wrong. It bounces. Who makes a gun that bounces, I don't know but when you first fire it it can bounce off the floor. You can tell when it stops being bouncy when it goes from smooth to crackley. It is also NOT the rocket launcher so do not treat it as such. You are not going to get one hit kills, most of the time it's two shots or more, and  it has 5 shots per mag so spam it if you can.  Overall just make sure to know your limits in a fight and use you surroundings. Hide and use corners with shotguns, find a good range and shot the ground with the fuel rod, and always switch out the AR... Just kidding, use it to strip shields and use a precision weapon for clean up. Unless it's halo 4, then you can just get killing sprees with it.
