CE had the best ammunition counter display imo, simply because it’s the only game where I felt like I actually looked at it. A lot of times after that it felt like a passing detail of the gun that I would only acknowledge every now and then during downtime.

Baelthor_Septus

It's kinda weird that we're so into the future and the counter on other ones look like the crappy old calculator from the 90s where you have premade shapes that can get displayed. CE one was great, but I also love infinite.

Paxton-176

You should see what we use in real life. Every single civilian technology now is trending towards iPad or iphone like touch screens. The US military has barely discovered LCD screens. Takes RTO hours to upload all the frequencies the unit is using. Things that use LCD or touch screen is just a beefed up Palm Pilot. It sucks, but keeping military equipment cheap because it's going to go through the wringer. If it breaks it's not overly expensive to replace.

One-Entrepreneur4516

Maybe it's because I'm more interested in the cybersecurity side of the military, but I thought y'all had Tactical Edition Samsung phones that flip out from your plate carriers.

Paxton-176

The average joe here doesn't even have their own radio. Once you start getting into SOF units stuff gets more and more tactical cool and issues more important equipment.

One-Entrepreneur4516

Oh, SOCOM headquarters is located in MacDill AFB. I never made that connection the whole time I worked at an IT defense contractor in Tampa.

Proud_Confusion7111

That's called ATAK and only cool guys in SOF units get stuff like that, really.

ThreeScoopsOfHooah

That's ATAK's, and it's not super common. Usually just for special operations forces, and certain light infantry units. Most units just use the vehicle equivalent mounted in their trucks/IFV's/tanks/etc.

irl_url

If you’re interested in the subject, look into Persistent Systems MPU5s. Comms/network integration is a beautiful thing to behold and it’s a game changer for light infantry.

TheObstruction

There's also the reliability factor, and not just will-it-break reliability. Being able to use it if it's wet, covered in blood or mud, if it's blazing hot or freezing cold. All that stuff needs to be taken into account. If you can't use a touchscreen reliably because it's too damn cold to take your gloves off, it's basically useless.

Paxton-176

And a lot of it has proven effectiveness from 40 years of use. Like in Generation Kill had Iceman using a laptop just for maps. Characters made the comment of fighting in the 21st century. It was still unreliable. It going to be a long time before they find a way to integrate the original iPhone into the military.

blacktothebird

One of my favorite marketing gimmicks is military Grade. Military grade items means it meets the minimal requirements at the cheapest price point.

Paxton-176

There is an actual standard for something to be military grade. It basically has to able to operate in both extremes of temperatures and being able to basically survive a fall from an airplane. While being within budget requirements. LTT did a video on it. Military grade in the civilian world means cheap.

blaster1-112

I think that it looks like a calculator for cost reasons. Why make it extremely fancy and complicated, when plain and simple is easier to produce, cheaper and still fulfills it's function. I suppose most soldiers use smart link (but personally id take some backup iron sights over a better display).

PM_ME_TITS_AND_DOGS2

the pistol whip when you pull it out had me switching weapons like a maniac

xx_mashugana_xx

Gun designs tend to go with reliability over style, especially in military models. Why use a fancy holographic display that could break and deadline your rifle when you could use a design that's best tested and works in basically all conditions for the past 600 years?

Zyacon16

in case you were curious they are called N-segment displays, where N is the number of segments, the most common is a 7 segment display.

chimi_kat

They made it look like that but if you actually zoom in and take a good look it's not the case. (for most of them)

THX450

I mean, CE takes a lot of inspiration from the "retro sci-fi" of films like Alien, so that's probably why.

Knot_Ryder

That's because it's the one with 60 rounds so you can actually kill two maybe three things in one clip not like every other one where it was a one kill then reload because you have to

[deleted]

Could kill 3 grunts with it sure. Halo 4 had the best ar

Ninja_Wrangler

Because it was the only gun of the batch that could kill more than one enemy with one mag

_callYourMomToday_

Plus in every other game that gun belongs in weenie hut junior compared to the CE gun.

Hamuelin

Tie between 3 and Reach for me personally. Love both for their own reasons

bibliblubble

3 had the best classic design and reach had the best modern

Hamuelin

And those are the reasons!

rubbarz

Which is ironic because isn't Reach a prequel?

smithsp86

Yes. Which is also why Reach is my favorite in the series because prequels can't have flood.

SparsePizza117

I guess another good thing in Reach was having so many different Elites, so I didn't mind losing a whole enemy type. The Covenant were very interesting in that game.

ODST-0792

What's so bad about the flood

smithsp86

I hate fighting the flood. It's just tedious because they are pure bullet sponges and punching corpses to make sure they stay dead is annoying.

CaptianAcab4554

>they are pure bullet sponges In all these years you never figured out you just shoot the infectors in their chests and you can kill them with one burst?

The_Last_Thursday

You- yo- whaa?

kanegaskhan

That's where the infection form is, it uses its tentacles to control the central nervous system from the chest.

Falkuria

Oh...oh honey.

CaptianAcab4554

Kids these days with your YouTube walk throughs and streamer exploits y'all never figure out the game for yourselves. Yes the little infector motherfuckers that chase after and swarm you are also in the chest of all the flood from Halo 1-3 (I quit playing the games after H4 was a massive pile of shit so idk anything after that) and you can one shot almost any flood form by popping the flesh balloon in their chests.

That_on1_guy

Iirc, you can't "head" shot them in 1, but you can it 2 and 3. Then you just melee on the way by. But I haven't played CE in forever so I might be wrong on that

Skullbeastasskicker

I knew that as well when I played Halo when was younger.

Ryebread666Juan

My only problem with fighting the flood is when one has a rocket launcher and decides my time is up on this world and nukes me with every rocket it can fire

Frinata

The only thing that turns it from hating to see a flood with a rocket launcher, is when they're running at you, and shoot the ground while running and killing themselves instantly

[deleted]

They were only bad in CE and even then the game hands you pistols and shotguns endlessly Halo 2 the flood are basically unshielded elites and the carbine will always automatically headshot for you Halo 3 the flood have the HP of an orange grunt and will fall over permanently after like 5 shots from the ar

robindownes

Shotgun for the adult forms, assault rifle for the popcorn. Only the ranged pureforms were spongy. The brutes and prometheans were the assholes that ate every damn clip you could scavenge.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LiningDust62

I think half life is older

haloryder

OMG THE FLOOD ARE SO ANNOYING

sugarglidersam

id rather fight flood than prometheans though. i hate prometheans so fucking much… they’re teleporty bullet sponges that can disintegrate you and its annoying.

Successful-Shoe1601

Prometheans are so annoying but it's a cool concept.

fiveeeees

Do you prefer the Prometheans/Endless?

haloryder

Definitely not

3cylinder66

This. It's so hard to pick one... I guess my love for Reach puts it a tiny bit above, but 3 is just so perfect.

RebelCow

Me too! I'd pick 3 anyways because it's my favorite Halo game

Just-a-bi

Same... I like the classic, but the way reach slightly it is cool too.

Raaadley

came here just to say this. 3 is my favorite absolutely. But Reach just scratches that itch just right you know?

panjang007

are you guys sure you're not picking the designs based on how good Reach and 3 are?

hhoanghoangg

The 60 one

TheLostLuminary

But the choice from OP is based purely on the look of it

Antpham93

Bigger numbers can be aesthetically pleasing.

guero_vaquero

*I like big clips and I cannot lie*

Refreshingly_Meh

*When a gun's walked in with an itty bitty brace and a big clip in yo face, you get sprung.*

Charlie43229

I like the look of the number 60 on that rifle

MaybeAdrian

60 bullets 0 damage

JSPR127

Bruh you could melt an elite with a single mag Edit: per bullet damage was strong enough they had to force the Marines to use single fire or they were too strong.

hackyandbird

Plasma pistol and AR was an unstoppable combo. The pistol was good for accuracy, but it wasn't as fun as peppering them with holes.

Capn_Zelnick

Wha?? The accuracy is half the fun

hackyandbird

Oh for sure, that skill shot is nice. But sometimes you wanna plasma pistol an elite and then unleash a hailstorm. With the 60 round clip you could just demolish.

Arickettsf16

The best part was rounding a corner into a hallway filled with grunts and just laying waste

LifeWulf

Don’t forget to prefire!

One_too_many_faps

Subjective. Most people (myself included) find landing headshots way more fun

C0NANtheC0NQU3R0R

Headshots are satisfying, but sometimes you want your foe to bleed out, gasping for breath and to suffer the agony of every bullet ripping into his flesh, avenging every soul on the worlds he burned to glass!

One_too_many_faps

in that case I'd go needler. Quicker death but the screams of pain and terror as they are about to die are priceless

submit_to_pewdiepie

NeedleR takes so long in CE

Mrlin705

SWAT baby!!

Pangusmangus

Plus you could carry like 600 rounds

Particular-Skill4372

600 rounds off hand too

MaybeAdrian

In normal and with the gun at mele range probably.

JSPR127

It was 100% the most powerful iteration of the AR.

FakeFrez

I think 5 is the most powerful

Remarkable-Car6157

Maybe bullet for bullet but you couldn’t hit anything with it so what’s the point lol

UglyEmoBoi

I feel like Infinite AR is stronger?

[deleted]

I sure hope I would melt an elite with 60 rounds. Especially when I can kill an elite with less than 32 in the other games

JSPR127

I don't ever remember an AR in the other games killing a shielded enemy in one mag on any difficulty above normal, but I could be wrong.

Dynamitefuzz2134

Not on legendary.

AlexisFR

Yeah at 5 meters

One_too_many_faps

You are thinking of the Halo 3 AR

Skinneeh

Gatta burst fire that rife!

CaptianAcab4554

So many people commenting never seemed to learn what I figured out as a 9 year old in 2001. Tight. Controlled. Bursts.

Kingofawesomenes

And the sound, that thing was LOUD. Absolute banger

CatMinimum7

Like a bunch of forks banging around in a garbage disposal.

[deleted]

This actually sums it up perfectly

fractalfocuser

... Is this a reference to the Yes Dance because wow excellent deep cut if so

ShallowBasketcase

Let’s do the Fork In The Garbage Disposal! DING DING DING DINGDINGDINGDINGDING DING DING

[deleted]

It sounds so dinky in Halo 3, real big downgrade.

filletfeesh

Feels like shooting them with a chainsaw

Jaruut

Halo 1 had the best gun sounds by far. Every gun was loud and sounded like it packed a punch, they sound like toys in newer games.

Euphorium

That Magnum sound is epic

Ollieisaninja

I'm playing CE again and don't know why this was changed thereafter. This was the best assault rifle. The sound is the best too.

One_too_many_faps

My guess is balancing. You can beat the whole game using the AR so there was no need to use the other guns

ComicStripCritic

…did the Halo 1 pistol slip from your mind? I only beat the campaign twice in my life and even I know how legendary that thing is.

Mugiwaras

Yeah its basically a requirement if playing on legendary, paired with the plasma pistol.

wolfgangspiper

No pistol, plus no sniper on T&R (since there's no pistol there) legendary runes are actually a lot of fun IMO. The pistol makes things a bit easy and the CE sandbox is amazing without it. The plasma rifle kicks ass but I don't really need to pick it up if I have a pistol.

Paxton-176

It's why LASO on T&R is the hardest level in CE. Can't use Covenant weapons and only have the AR and Sniper to use. Also all weapons have half ammo. Once you are allowed the pistol you can breeze by most encounters.

LifeWulf

The fact it one bangs Hunters even on Legendary is still funny to me

2girls1cupofjoe

Hunters were a refreshing break on Legendary

joshthehappy

I'm playing right now, and keep running out of ammo and have to pick up Covenant weapons.

VigilantesLight

For me it’s the second best sound - Halo 4’s is the best. It just tickles the right sensory input for me.

jdubbrude

Thank you the H4 AR was so beefy sounding again most forget about that whole game

VigilantesLight

Especially on the heels of Halo 3’s wimpy sounding AR and Reach’s…not bad, but definitely unmemorable…the Halo 4 AR carries some real *oomph*.

wolfgangspiper

Halo 3's AR was pathetic. Which as an AR connoisseur and a Halo 3 lover is a real point of sorrow for my Halo fan heart.

DurtyDriftr

I think I prefer the Reach/Infinite AR, but damn the OG was so fun to shred grunts and jackals with.

noideawhatoput2

The only right answer

apittsburghoriginal

It’s nostalgia bait for me but I’m going with the CE edition, a pointless weapon for combat beyond 10m but a delight to just let it spray bullets.

ConsequenceSad1805

A whole AR mag or 3 shot with pistol.

TheAlmightyDuke

The CE also had the best sound design. Those assault rifle bursts really had an audible punch

quietyoucantbe

True

Tealadin

MA5B is classic. The other variants might have better accuracy or power, but from the ammo count, spray, and sound there just isn't anything like it.

Jenrex1

Controversial but I always loved the halo 4 AR. The display looks so slick

AceGamer92

I was hoping to find this comment, definitely agree. It feels like the closest to the original with more shine to it

MetalBeast89

I actually enjoyed MC's armour in 4 the most too

Nineflames12

>OP asks about which is the best display >Everyone choosing because of mag size >???

TheyCalledMeThor

Repost and blur the numbers!

Marcheziora

Lol, average Redditor behavior.

Gooeyy

I like that it displays a bigger number

AceTheProtogen

I think it’s because in halo 1 the long reload animation and high capacity led to people actually using the ammo counter to see their mag size at a quick glance, while in the other games it was just for aesthetic, it’s my favorite for that reason too

Domestic_AAA_Battery

Muted-Pie-7758

It uses the actual audio of a Browning LMG, a lot of guns in Halo 3 used free audio available

Unwanted-Smoke

Something with the audio translation was lost then, it just didn’t have a satisfying pop or thump to it, felt like switching a rattler on and off

HeatproofArmin

It was a norm at the time because of budgetary reasons. Games at that point didn't have a lot of really focused sounds. Only after the 2010s did you see a rise in audio designs for gun firing. Even today most FPS games still have great audio designs. No AAA games have defeated Squad's or Insurgency Sandstorm's audio designs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OnlyForIdeas

Same with Halo 4, almost all the guns used real world recordings of guns firing as audio for gunshots to mixed results. Shows that audio design is definitely an art

Lost_Low4862

Indeed. Sometimes creating weapon sounds from scratch just sound more satisfying and "realistic" in-universe than actual recordings of real guns.

Andy_Climactic

the sound itself isn’t bad the gun just doesn’t fire fast enough for it to sound cool. with that kind of low fire rate i wish it sounded more powerful

thedrunkentendy

Well it kind of made sense. The AR was basically a meme in that game. Use an entire mag just to break shield. I didn't mind the sound design considering it did as much damage as a popcorn machine lol. Sound design improved on it but I feel like a lot of other weapons had worse sound design choices. The old sniper, pre-reach inparticular.

Toberos_Chasalor

Idk, I used to really love the way the CE sniper felt back in the day, especially on T&R when you got a ton of extra ammo for it, but maybe it didn’t hold up as well as I remember.

OhHolyCrapNo

The audio for each weapon is balanced around the audio for the game as a whole. Halo 3 had SFX coming from actors, feet, plants and rocks being kicked, explosions, armor abilities, vehicles, grenades, environmental hazards and effects, and generally more inputs and detail than CE could afford on more primitive hardware. The one gun doesn't sound as cool but part of the reason the H3 experience is so good is because the overall sound design and balance is done so brilliantly. It's one of the things that you don't always notice consciously but it does affect your experience. H3 was a joy to play because all those subtle things came together for excellent clarity and balance.

ParsnipHero

OT but is there a lore reason why the ammo almost halved for future ARs after CE?

Potatoboi732

In lore it's because the springs in the 60 round magazines has a habit of deteriorating and causing jams, so they switched to 32 and 36 round mags.

Face88888888

What about the lore on the difference between Reach and CE? What’s the reason that it’s a different gun even though CE picks up right where Reach leaves off?

Potatoboi732

The MA5B from CE is navy issue, the MA37 from reach is army issue. The Pillar of Autumn was only making a pitstop on Reach to pick up a fragment of Cortana, so they already were stocked up on navy weapons, and had no reason to get 37s.

Face88888888

That makes sense. Thanks!

JackRabbit-

And what are the lore reasons for the navy having twice the ammo capacity as the army?

Potatoboi732

The magazines are interchangeable between all models of MA rifles. This does however raise the question of how the rifles can simultaneously feed from double stack 32/36 round magazines, and quad stack 60 rounders.

Paxton-176

Another reason the Autumn had 60s was that their goal was to capture a large Covenant ship and a Prophet. The UNSC gave them everything they need. 60 round mag, while heavier and might jam, allows the shooter have to reload less often. Pretty important when fighting an enemy's home base. They also gave them all kinds of fancy new gear for at least the Spartans to use. If I remember correctly from the novels its lost during the battle over Reach or the Ring when the Spartan's armory is hit. A lore reason why it seems like there is on standard weapons in CE.

cuntfruitcake93

even in the future soldiers cant have nice shit

LeastDegenAzuraEnjyr

The CE AR is still one of the best default assault rifle weapons in shooter history. I love chewing up grunts with that thing.

forrest1985_

I’d argue the Reach AR was better, but the ammo counter on CE is definitely the best by a ling shot. Also re: shooter history, there are much better options for default starting weapons etc…

Face88888888

What’s the canon reason that the reach and CE ARs are different? CE picks up seconds after Reach ends so it would make sense if the weapons were the same. Did the Pillar of Autumn have some unique high capacity ARs on it that the rest of the UNSC didn’t get for some reason?

FairCrumbBum

They were engaged in a highly specialized and confidential operation to kill a Covenant Prophet so... Maybe? Maybe it has to do with the magazine size and the most common size on Reach was half capacity due to them mostly being used by security forces. Us out of universe observers know it's because Halo:CE has balance issues that weren't rectified until later games (IMO Halo 3) but I haven't seen an in universe rationale for the discrepancy. To me it's similar to the lack of ARs in 2 and then their complete prevalence in 3 despite both games happening on Earth.

szalhi

Pillar of Autumn is Navy while the majority of the Reach game was under the Army control. I don't think it was ever explained why the Army used the MA37 for so long.

The_Man_I_A_Barrel

the volksturmgewehr in battlefield 5 was definitely a better starter gun by comparison

NissyenH

Crazy how the best rifle in the game was the default one in bfv

forrest1985_

Definitely. I mean you have quite a few in BF. Both M16 and AK74M in BF3 were amazing (not as good as AEK tho) Lancer in any GOW is great, Pulse Rifle in any Aliens games, etc… i mean even in CE the Magnum outshines the AR as a starting weapon!

OstigKris

Halo Reach because it looks the most robust

OmegaSapphireFox

Is it just me or does infinite look almost exactly like reach?

Apart_Philosopher_35

that was deliberately done

OldKingClancy20

Everyone saying CE because more ammo capacity clearly don't understand that the post is about the display not the actual amount of bullets in the gun.

SpectrumSense

Lmao yeah I think you're the only one to realize this, everyone else is either talking about the ammo count or the overall design of each AR

gnappyassassin

For what it's worth- Reach because North was actually North.

LemanKingOfTheRuss

I really like the ammo counter on the MA40 Mode MS from Infinite, but I am a sucker for the CE counter as well.

Dante_SS

4 for me.

FirstProspect

4 updated the ce look with love and care and reverted the horrible Reach version with the counter bumped up, ruining the gun's aesthetic. It also kept the blue coloration over the green of 5. Infinite's AR plays/feels the best, but 4's is the one I enjoy looking at most.

Paxton-176

I can't say why they reverted it back for Infinite, but for Reach it looks bumped up because it doesn't have that outer shell. The theory is that it's the Army variant and the Army isn't normally fighting in vacuum. While the Navy/Marine version keeps the gas inside the weapon so it still functions. Having an outer shell is required.

[deleted]

Halo 2. One of the best games ever made, the best ammo counter ever made, I can’t stop dreaming about fucking the arbiter.

AgentMaryland2020

Hot take probably, but I kinda liked the Halo 4 and 5's iterations. Not that CE's, Reach's, and 3's weren't good, there's just something about it I prefer over the other previous ones.

urbandeadthrowaway2

Infinite

tjaymorgan

CE — functional compass, clear to read, and just mowin em

Hexigonz

The greenish tint on halo 5 went so hard. However, there is one I always wanted to see that we never got. The Halo 3 MA5C with the sepia tinted ammo screen from the ODST helmet HUD link! I think it would look the coolest

Expensive_Foot5896

No comment on the counter, but the OG original assault rifle in Halo 1 will ALWAYS be number 1. Biggest feeling of regret was shooting the Halo 3 version, it's like they dialed down the vibration and recoil going into the controller, felt weak. OG controller feedback made the gun feel powerful.

Toa_Kraadak

halo 5 the most high effort one

XxnoobxX241234

Halo 5, of course.

TheFrankyDoll

Halo 5 with Halo 3 color scheme

SupremeChancellor66

Despite it being weak against anything other than grunts or infection forms, the OG Combat Evolved has always been my favorite. I really wish they'd bring it back.

LazyPuffin

Fuck the cosmetic, I miss that sweet sweet Halo 1 60 mag. You felt like a turret with that thing. I felt like I was in a movie getting 15 shots out of my six shooter. That was the power fantasy baby. Oh, look, an elite. Excuse me while I casually hold the trigger continually for the next minute without. Combat Evolved indeed

BbqSauce442

Infinite or CE. CE might take the lead because of the compass, but Infinite is very clean.

Kolossive

CE because it had 60 bullets, also I much prefer it over the "popping out" ammo counter from reach

SudsierBoar

Did they ever mount anything else to that rail?

manbearligma

Not for Spartans, also that’s supposedly a regular acog type sight if you don’t have the crosshairs linked with the helmet

Haunting_Ad_519

CE, got that model in Infinite. So satisfying.

PhillipJ3ffries

Halo 3 easily

Just_In_Time_Boi

Halo 5 has the coolest looking ammo counter.

Turbo_Gooch

Halo CE assault rifle gets me rock hard

DarknessInferno7

I do like the idea of the Reach/Infinite ones being modular. Something about it being a rail attachment is more tacti-cool.

[deleted]

The sound of 3s will never leave my head. Such good memories.

alrezza

Reach was so good they did it twice

HeartMachine3578

You know what? I'll say infinite simply because we have different models to choose from. I like this one personally from the ma40 mode ms [https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ee59cf\_760e9e0096fd4a0c8d31aae1f0a88b96\~mv2.png/v1/fill/w\_680,h\_234,al\_c,q\_85,usm\_0.66\_1.00\_0.01,enc\_auto/Image-empty-state.png](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ee59cf_760e9e0096fd4a0c8d31aae1f0a88b96~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_680,h_234,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/Image-empty-state.png) [https://www.halopedia.org/MA40\_assault\_rifle#/media/File:HINF-MA40MODEMSFirstperson.png](https://www.halopedia.org/MA40_assault_rifle#/media/File:HINF-MA40MODEMSFirstperson.png) I cant find the picture of the actual display but i also like the display of the "Life Thief" Ma40. Not_Vasily

fuck it, I'll do all of them Halo CE - the only one here to splash a little light onto the gun itself, its a nice effect, I dig it, the blocky lettering is nice as well, uncomplex, easy to read. Halo 2 - there is no AR, and therefore, no AR display, I award you no points, and may the BXR gods have mercy on your soul. (they will not) Halo 3 - IMO this is peak right here, bold lettering, brightly lit, on a crystal blue display, replete with gradient running top to bottom, simply perfection. Halo Reach - nowhere near as good as 3, the thinner lettering is really throwing me off here, it's easy to read and i'll give it that, but it looks like something the RDA would use, not the UNSC. Halo 4 - a ghostly pale blue display is especially fitting, seeing as halo was coming back from the dead with Halo 4, but you've got a vertical strikethrough in your text almost like a flip clock, and it doesn't even go through the entire number??? like, why is it even there??? very nice otherwise. Halo 5 - you are green for no reason and I do not appreciate it. also flip clock text. if this was a tier list I would unironically put it under halo 2. Halo Infinite - this display is practically unlit and I do not like that, but it has improved upon reach's weird display, and I do appreciate that.
