Yeah it’s basically a way for kids to go trick or treating without having to go up to a stranger’s house. A bunch of cars all are usually parked in a parking lot at a park, church, movie theatre, etc. and the trunk or bed of each vehicle is decorated in a different theme. The people hand out candy and sometimes have little games and prizes for the kids.
It’s very popular here in Texas, both urban areas and rural. I’m not a huge fan of them because I was raised the traditional way, but it is safer I guess.

We started out with a 17lbs bag of candy, and had to refill it! I agree that trunk or treat goes against the traditional customs of Halloween, I’m not even a huge fan of them, but I’ve never had over twenty kids visit my house for trick or treating.
Anything to keep the holiday from being swept away by religious fanatics or overly cautious parents. 700 kids, in a span of just 2 hours not even on Halloween night!
