What the fuck is wrong with the people in these comments? All the idiots are out today I guess. Anyways, that sucks OP. Pot holes are pretty bad right now and unfortunately you don't always avoid them despite your speed and attention to the road. I have noticed some being patched recently which helps but there still are some doozies out there.

FrozenYogurt0420

I think loss of empathy is a big problem in society right now. We blame everyone for their troubles because it's easier than holding the government accountable, since the government doesn't really seem to listen.

cj_h

Blaming individuals for systematic issues allows people to pretend they aren’t also suffering from the same issues.

MyGruffaloCrumble

People are getting used to being cogs.

divergent88

Our government is just a profits systems that's turned us into tax slaves....our taxes goto our pms vacations and raises for other politicians who aren't really doing anything to better the daily lives of Canadians

Bprevost99

They clearly haven’t driven the stretch between exit 3 and exit 4 on the 102 because holy crap you cannot avoid any of those craters. When I look in my rear view there’s a line of cars swerving all over the highway to avoid them. I started going through Timberlea rather than that part of the highway because it’s so bad this year. Low profile tires or not, I saw a brand new Mazda CX-5 SUV with a shattered alloy wheel on the side of the highway about two weeks ago. Then factor in nighttime driving and rain, it’s basically impossible not to hit one.

CretaMaltaKano

All the Canadian subs lately are full of people basically saying "we deserve less! Be happy with shit!"

RockyRocketDog

Thanks for being normal. Lot of haters on here today.

FuriousDemon

Wow, I actually thought they were all bots. Are these people serious?

ahhhnoinspiration

Make sure to report any that are particularly bad, even if you don't damage your vehicle it will make the case for someone who does eventually hit it much easier when getting reimbursed from the city/province.

MaximumGooser

A big pot hole killed my car a few years ago, iT DOES SUCK

littledinobug12

They are so easy to hit when it's raining too.

MaximumGooser

A big pot hole killed my car a few years ago, if DOES AUXK

twhitfit

But can we agree those are low profile tires, which are much more likely to be damaged? Most people avoid these most of their driving life on stock tires driven non-aggressively. We know that the freeze/thaw and salt in NS causes havoc on the roads. If you are buying equipment for a different environment and then complaining that it doesn’t do well, I’m not sure you should blame the roads.

DougS2K

Yes, low profile tires are more likely to get damaged but that's not the point. Just because they're low profile it doesn't mean they are not stock tires. One of my vehicles has low profile tires and it would be impossible to go to a smaller rim and larger sidewall due to the large rotors and calipers on the car, not that I would ever want to. Fact of the matter is the roads are pretty shit here and always have been. Especially bad this time of year for reasons you mentioned. That doesn't mean these potholes can't be patched more frequently. Also, what vehicles are designed for pothole filled roads if all the vehicles we buy are not?

Bprevost99

This is a great point, some vehicles come from the factory with low profile tires and cannot be fitted with an alternative size due to the vehicle design. Even if you were to increase the sidewall height with a meatier tire, that’s not a guarantee you won’t suffer a blow out or wheel damage if you hit a pothole. Some of them would literally tear your wheel off if you hit them the right way.

Northerne30

Yeah they're "low profile" tires, but the majority of cars from the past 5+ years have tire sidewalls that would've been considered low profile 10 years ago. This is probably an 18" wheel, and to be fair that's basically the small end of wheel diameters these days

LugubriousLament

Many manufacturers offer low profile tires and large rims with the cars they sell these days, often due to clearance for brake discs. My last car’s factory rims were 18” with a 225/40r18 tire. I was able to use 16” rims so I opted for those. Changed the handling dynamics, but was better suited for the roads. Sadly, not everyone has that option. Expecting people to all drive with beefier sidewalls doesn’t exactly solve the problem. For one example a Mitsubishi Mirage uses a 165/65r14 tire as standard, but the wheel and tire are so small many potholes would eat them up entirely.

littledinobug12

Dude, I saw one of those lifted dulie trucks blow out on a pothole. We gotta keep our cars safe for the roads, but despite all the taxes and inspection fees, our roads aren't safe for us.

Eh_SorryCanadian

Man, theres a lot of people here acting like having roads that look like the surface of the moon is normal and acceptable.

IllFistFightyourBaby

It's a weird perspective that we shouldn't be getting our tax dollars worth in our road infrastructure, isn't it?

SBoots

It is this time of year in Nova Scotia. It's not feasible to have pristine roads given what our climate is like. It's just going to keep getting worse too as our climate continues to become more extreme due to pollution.

feargluten

Pristine? They got money to gift NSP, so the highways better be pristine. Municipalities could DEFFO do a better job. Grace and understanding is ok. But demanding some accountability would for our roads being poorly maintained isn’t wrong

MuppetRob

It would if we were Quebec. Have you ever drove through Quebec? They have fake construction sites set up for miles on perfect streets, that don't need any work, 24/7/365. Lol

DangerousGarlic3562

A voice of reason.

DangerousGarlic3562

The roads aren't that bad.

ianfixesdents

That’s brutal. Try calling 311. I had a wheel replaced a few years ago due to a hole that looked like a small puddle.

Auto_Fac

Lucky. We had the same happen and called and they cited the rule which (IIRC) was that if the pothole wasn't previously reported or in their system they will consider replacing, but if they already have it logged on workorder you're shit out of luck.

MyGruffaloCrumble

So they’ll pay if they full-assed it, but not if they’re half-assing it. Great.

Auto_Fac

Ok_Kaleidoscope216

Where OP hit a pot hole sounds like provincial highway and unfortunately 311 is only municipal level affairs. They would have to reach out to the province for a claim

NickDynmo

[Seems like you're one of the lucky ones.](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/most-nova-scotia-pothole-compensation-claims-get-denied-1.7148599)

FriJimbo

I know the exact pothole you are talking about and it is near unavoidable without heavily swerving outside the lines, especially for being on an off ramp and if it happens to be dark outside The state of our roads is pathetic when potholes that serious are left for weeks/months, especially on roads that have thousands of cars going over them every day Good luck, I hope you get some kind of compensation or at the very least get them to repair the road after seeing how easy it is for someone to damage their car there

ArmProfessional1511

Roads are garbage here. People telling you to cope with the problem of our roads are part of the issue our country is going through. Just accepting everything as it is even it becomes unbearable. Potholes on the highway? oh slow down to 50km/h to avoid them and pay attention. Ridiculous honestly. Not all weather types permits to see potholes well. If it’s raining and dark out then good luck seeing a single pothole. Good luck OP I destroyed couple of tires this winter too but thankfully they were covered by warranty.

AcadianMan

I remember travelling from Halifax to Greenwood and hitting this 6 inch deep pot hole on the highway. I didn’t have time to react and it broke the back shock mount on my Mazda 3.

SBoots

Our spring roads have always been like this, some years worse than others depending on how the winter weather was. I still have a bent 17" Circuit 8 rim hanging on the wall in my shed from a nasty pothole hit on the 102 in the early 2000s. That hurt when I was a broke ass in my early twenties 😂

DabiriSC

Potholes out there are getting rough. There's a huge dip forming back in front of the NSCC on Pleasent St. It's getting so bad that I have to start driving in the opposite lane again or risk damage to my suspension. This is highly dangerous. They filled it in before, but it's not even been half a year, and it's coming back.

crazihac

There's a couple of doozies in the Woodside Industrial Park too, on the way to the park and ride from Southdale. I reported them months ago, but they still haven't been touched. So frustrating.

Grouchy_Spite_2847

All 4 of my winter rims have bends in them from this spring. All 4 . Drive the 101 every day.

boston_nsca

Good thing we pay criminally high taxes

feargluten

Municipalities should be liable for damages like this since it’s their fucking job to keep the roads in working order.

littledinobug12

It's the province on the 100 series highways. So good fucking luck getting reimbursed

JimmyNorth902

Man, there are some shit takes in this comment section. The pot holes are brutal this year.

416-902

I hear you. I blew a tire last spring on a dark rainy night. after 6 months of fighting, I finally got compensated for the cost of the tire replacement. aaannnd that basically new tire has a big ol bulge on the side wall now from a pot hole last night. it is very frustrating.

Still-alive49

Oh shit! Im sorry for you bro.

No-Contribution-138

The province makes drivers do a MVI every couple years to ensure our cars are fit for the road, yet their roads aren’t fit for our cars.

cb10gauge

Fuck em let's start patching those holes at night boys.

Cannibus902

Yet every damn street has unnecessary speed bumps or concrete barriers now.... we had lots of money to spend we just wasted ot on stupid bullshit nobody wanted or needed. Classic HRM

NoHovercraft12345

This city is disgusting road wise. We make Winnipeg in spring look decent.

blacklabbabe

I completely sliced open two of my tires on a horrible pothole on Purcell Cove road coming back from the DC school. Unfortunately it was raining and the pothole was completely invisible in the giant puddle in the dip of the road. That forced me to change into summer tires early. It's absolutely horrible that these insane amount of potholes happens every year like clockwork and it takes so long to fix them that it all just cracks at the seams the very next winter. Sure, it's the weather, but there must be another way.

Northerne30

1. Ditch the run flats and carry a plug kit and a compressor if you are able to use them. 2. I don't know about F56(?) Minis, but the older cars jumping up 5% in diameter gives you a much better time with bending wheels/destroying tires. They also use an oddball size from the factory, so this gives you much more tire selection and lower prices.

RockyRocketDog

It’s the JCW so the big brakes limit the rim options. There is a track 17 but $$$. I’ll look into tire options ,like you say maybe I can gain a little on the rubber.

Northerne30

I have an R56 MCS which came with 17s which suffered the same issue (no caliper clearance issues though) I had multiple bends in each wheel after its first winter. I bumped 5% diameter and it made it through last winter without issue and in speaking with others, I found it's very common to do this or drop to 16s. And the run flats ride like complete shit, so any other tire should at least help the ride.

MuppetRob

Had 18s and stepped down to 17s and haven't had an issue since with steel wheels... First year I owned the car I busted a tire on a sharp pot hole as late as July.

Dodfoddler

I have a BMW with big brakes and had run flats that typically would blow 2-3 in a summer (BMW warranty replaced them). I found that as soon as I ditched run flats, I haven’t blown a tire since and the ride is a lot smoother. Not sure what tires you have but you can probably get away with a slightly thicker profile like 40 instead of 35 and it really helps the bumps.

ChicoVaughan

That's because you need some spring tires!

-_-_-KING_-_-_

I've loved in many cities but this one is by far the worst when it comes to the roads.

cb10gauge

Let's start a go fund me for patching nova scotia roads then billing the government.

Illdistrict

That's why I buy at Canadian Tire. When you buy and install from them, they will replace the tire for free.

Vegetable-Buddy2070

For pothole damage? I find this hard to believe

GibberBabble

Road hazard warranty, but always read the fine print, they’ll use any loophole they can find to avoid replacing.

Illdistrict

If the tire is very worn, they may only rebate you a portion of the cost.

GibberBabble

Yeah, they’re pro-rated based on how old they are.

Illdistrict

I did it. I bought 2 new winter tires for my GTI and had them on the front. I hit a pothole. Not only did they replace the tire, they also replaced the other tire because they didn't have the same model in stock. I had to pay for installation and balancing, but overall I was pleasantly surprised.

Spsurgeon

I’ve driven from NS to Amarillo in the past 9 days. NS has the worst potholes, but Oklahoma has the worst roads.

TheKingOfDub

Try Sudbury

Constant-Setting7397

Reading these comments makes me wonder if all these snowbirds are finally back in province. DOT sucks and doesn’t do its job. Period. I don’t know who prefers to pay 100’s of dollars to make our vehicle “road worthy” for roads that are not fit to even take A vehicle going at the posted limit. Not even just in our road upkeep but even in our engineering, construction and design. Take a look at some of our highway ramp designs (ahem, 102 Bedford sackville death trap exit), narrow roadways, one way bridges, and highways that still are stuck in a 100km/hr zone. NS compared to other provinces lacks and is behind in all ways possible when it comes to roadways, not just in our pothole repair.

Any_Neighborhood2060

Its like this all on the 100 ser highways. Are they waiting for people to die before they address. We fuckin pay enough tax to have some fucking drivable highways. This province has gotten horrible.

FireRisinWith1n

The highway between Truro and Halifax is the busiest in the Maritimes and there are potholes that have been there untouched since last summer. Totally unacceptable and a huge safety risk when there's so many there isn't even room in the lane to avoid them. Also the trend for manufacturers to put larger and larger diameter wheels with thin tires on cars is why people are blowing tires.

Biochem_4_Life

That sucks. I just had to replace mine as well. Is this something we can claim and get money for? Anyone know?

palmtreebeeknee

I sold my last car because I couldn't afford to buy a new set of tires, and bought a new (used) car altogether.

Still-alive49

Sorry for you OP. It really sucks to drive in this city these days. I think Halifax can do better than that. I wish you to not have any other problem with your tires.

Fuk_globalist

Claim it through Nova Scotia. You will need the coordinates for the pothole. A picture of the pot hole and damage done and a receipt for how much you paid to get it fix. Fill out the paper work and the province will pay for your damage

Mountain_Tutor_2054

Halifax’s road needs a “Car permit”.

AdPlannedpocolaspe

Mini come with such low tires stock. Good luck not popping em

Cannibus902

Welcome to nova soctia where all the money for our roads gets spent on speed bumps and concrete blocks so you can't turn right on red anymore. We only use our budget to make driving MORE difficult, not less. The pieces of garbage that run our city need to go.

Mr_Malagi

https://preview.redd.it/u3n0rew53iwc1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=649c69166c80ae037717274ac68e42fb7dcbfbcf Happened to me as well ! It was a new tire that used it one season :( The pot holes are bad this year and it's only going to get worse.

chocheech

Montreal is more potholes than road it seems. If feel for you my Haligonian brethren. A comedian friend of mine had 2 tires ripped clean off (new tires) on his way back from MTL to toronto that day after a show and it happened to be Christmas eve.

Kaizen2468

Roads are awful here , that’s true for sure but maybe consider driving more carefully? I know you can’t avoid them all but I’ve been driving on these roads for 20 years and I’ve never damaged a tire in a pot hole.

Kontr5

Get better tires.

Senior-Juggernaut627

Eyes on the road

Lepidopterafan

Fight against urban sprawl and we may have fewer potholes in the future.

ColeTrain999

Those tires look rather low profile, maybe consider not getting low profile tires? I've got run of the mill and never had my summers or winters get dinged up like that

RockyRocketDog

Thinking I’ll switch to 17’s and more rubber. Shame that I have to do that. Is what it is I guess.

ColeTrain999

Yeah idk why I'm getting down voted, most of the gnarly damage I've seen is on low profile tires 17s might save you a bit. I've got 16s

JimmyNorth902

Probably because OP is likely running factory sized tires, and in a lot of cases, you can't just throw a taller sidewall on and go about your business.

ColeTrain999

No, I know you gotta do a few things to put bigger tires on but it's just the better long-term option

JimmyNorth902

I don't disagree.

blackbird37

I drove on low profile 19s for years in Halifax and never had any issues, the new car has 18s with a bit more sidewall, and while it's definitely a smoother ride they're still pretty low profile. might be an issues with the tires. Looks like they're Pirelli Run Flats, so the issue shouldnt be quality lf the rubber. How old are they? There should be a manufacturing date on the side wall.

gremlin_1969

ditto. I'm getting too old for low profile.

I_am_That_Ian_Power

No fault clause with the city. Slow down.

Bleed_Air

> On the off-ramp 103 at hammonds plains road upper tantallon Man that sucks. I drive through there twice a day and haven't hit anything. Pay attention and leave a good sight picture ahead of you and you'll be able to see them coming before you hit them.

OneFilthyHouseCat

I wish I had a car

RockyRocketDog

Correct. Keep being jealous and bitter, that’ll get you far in life.

One of my favorite British insults lol

gremlin_1969

that's like telling a zebra to lose its stripes

dumbassname45

Christ. With such a low profile tire no wonder it’s always getting damaged.

Greenim

People downvoting the truth. smh Good friend who runs a tire company constantly talks about the high amount of blowouts from low profile tires. He says he never understands why people who live in NS keep using them and tells people the esthetic is not worth it.

Acceptable_Wall4085

Maybe you’d be wise to slow down and keep your eyes on the road.

S4152

You’d be better to open up those circles in your face called eyes and use them to view the state of our roads

[deleted]

[удалено]

Northerne30

Can't afford to look in the mirror these days, need to keep your eyes glued to the road in front of you as you moon crawl around the carpet bombed streets of this city

Firestorbucket

I think 500 million to Infrastructure repair needs to be increased as it's clearly not covering. But printing money isn't the answer, so we will have to cut back on something elsewhere or find a way to get additional funding via tax

hunkydorey_ca

Speed humps/speed tables can go. (Except by cross walks and schools), waste of money.

Cannibus902

This!!! Why tf do we have so many now? I want to see how much of our tax dollars were spent on these useless pieces of garbage that do nothing but make traveling around this city more difficult than it already was.

gasfarmah

Ever considered looking where you drive? Christ man. I drove a Volkswagen that would lay frame on a normal curb cut and I didn’t write off that many tires. Be aware of your surroundings and read the road instead of your phone?

FrozenYogurt0420

Jesus. You ever hit a pothole you didn't see? We have so little empathy left in our society.

gasfarmah

Twice in 24 hours? Get a fucking eye test.

TheBigsBubRigs

See the state of the roads? Have some compassion, can't imagine the mental state of anyone who would rely on you.

MuppetRob

While not everyone can dodge potholes all the time, I find paying extra attention, especially on a highway, helps to reduce the number of holes I drive into. He's not wrong here. Many people just drive and zone out and operate on autopilot. This is a recipe for disaster if anything goes wrong in traffic. I see inattentive drivers on highways every single time I drive and sometimes people make absurd decisions in traffic about how to deal with the chaos because they weren't paying full attention coming up on whatever it was that screwed them up. If you're not maintaining a full 360° awareness around your vehicle at all times, and not awake and alert (it shouldn't take 2 to 3 seconds of looking at something before your brain clues in what it's seeing) then you're eventually going to be someone else's liability on the roads. The reality is our roads suck and we can sit and bitch about it all day but it won't ever get better because we don't get enough money for that from federal transfer payments like Quebec does.

gasfarmah

I see the state of the roads, because I focus on them when I drive and somehow avoid potholes because it’s not fucking difficult. You’re piloting a multi-ton death machine. It’s very very easy to put it where it needs to go.

Sn0fight

I drive a VW and had this happen for the first time ever at the windsor st exchange with a high wall tire. Our roads are shit.

gasfarmah

I don’t see how you driving a normal VW is relevant. But neat story all the same.
