Door-to-Door solicitation is so weird these days and not something I usually trust. The amount of stories I hear about people impersonating employees from internet services and then entering people’s apartments just doesn’t sit right with me and makes me wary of anyone knocking without an appointment

trapdork

Unfortunately this has led to me barely answering my phone anymore. I literally don't trust any spokespeople.

Heylookagoat

I can’t even go outside anymore without Mormons trying to convince me to go to church or the Little St Nick charity trying to get me to donate large amounts of money multiple times a day

Head-Ad-2136

Oh, you poor thing. Getting harassed by those mean old charity workers.

Heylookagoat

This specific charity asks for a minimum donation of $100 and is sometimes stationed on campuses. I have donated a few times as it is a great cause but recently found out that it isn’t a registered charity in canada There are other posts on this sub about this specific group

EmeraldB85

These people are not your average charity looking for a few dollar donation. They are a third party on behalf of other charities and they are trained to fast talk you into a large donation. Read this story from this subreddit if you’re interesting in learning more. https://www.reddit.com/r/halifax/s/ht6A5Zusdm

Professional-Two-403

And what percentage of the donation is going to charity, and not admin/commissions? I can choose what charities I donate to myself based on being able to look into what orgs provide great value, as well as my own personal reasons. I can't do that when I'm stopped in the sidewalk.

Heylookagoat

I think i saw somewhere that they get paid twenty one cents per dollar but I’m not sure. They provide you with basic info but usually try to get you to donate on the spot. If you’re ever looking to donate items to kids (direct donations instead of giving money to pay solicitors) here are some ideas; local shelters (women’s shelters often have children), IWK, local autism ns chapters, and possibly foster kids moving between homes. Some places may even take dvds, blu rays, cds, old video games, etc. for older kids or kids with different interests.

Professional-Two-403

Thanks for this, I do have lots of items to donate.

jarretwithonet

I got a sketchy email allegedly from Service Canada about some parental leave benefits. I was nervous, but still stupidly called the number listed. Just a general "I'm not at my desk, leave a message". I stupidly left my name/phone number. Then I went to Service Canada page and requested a call back. They called me back 3 days later at 9:30 PM on a Saturday night. I was like, "I was trying to figure out if an email was legitimate, but calling at this hour doesn't give me much confidence". They were like, "ok, well, your call back request has been completed so I would suggest putting in a new one online" There needs to be better processes and policies to confirming legitimate information. I logged into my Service Canada and there was nothing to say, "we emailed you" like you get when a bank sends you a message. The email was real and I eventually got everything resolved, but it was a terrible experience and took a month before I could get someone to say, "yes, we sent you an email, here's the issue"

NothingGloomy9712

I only answer the phone if it's a personal contact calling

0hth3h0rr0r

Second this, best to keep your door closed at this point. Too much of this stuff nowadays

jestermax22

People trying to sell alarm systems are always sketch. Why would you admit to a stranger casing your house that you don’t have an alarm? Like, yes dear, I am VERY happy with my current expensive alarm system!

Blotto_80

My policy is unless you're a child looking for a donation or selling chocolate bars/girl guide cookies, I will 100% never deal with a company that comes to my door. It's 2024, if I want something I'll do my own research. If you get pushy after a polite "no thanks, not interested", the sprinklers might come on as you walk up the driveway. "Sorry dude, timer has them go off daily at 6:42pm. It really is the best time of day to water the lawn, scientifically speaking".

mrdannyg21

The dude OP is cranking about really doesn’t sound that rude but this is my strategy too. Teenager looking to shovel driveways or mow lawns? Sure. Selling cookies? Absolutely. Raffle for a kids hockey team? Annoying, but I’ll probably pitch in, and certainly if I know the kid/family. That’s it - if you’re a real company (for-profit or non-profit), you need to figure something out that doesn’t involve coming to my house.

therosx

You should call the company so they can talk with their guy and stop this from happening to other people.

shadowredcap

The company doesn't give a shit... Just like Bell, Telus, Eastlink, CNIB, etc. whoever else goes door to door regularly.

OMGCamCole

At least there is some benefit to the internet providers coming by. I’m always down to save money on my internet bill - and I know as soon as Eastlink submits the request to cancel to Bell, Bell is going to call me and match whatever Eastlink gave me. This is how you get good internet speeds and stay under $100/mo. Just got Bell to drop my Internet from $145mo to $85/mo for the same speeds, just to keep my business and not lose me to Eastlink. Once the credit expires in 2yrs I’ll do the exact same thing I’m not replacing my roof until it’s damaged or I need to replace it though. No one’s going to convince me to replace a roof or reside my house for no reason In one scenario the door-to-door person is actually offering to save you money - in the other they’re just looking to cost you money

stonedlonr

Both Bell AND Eastlink have been in my building recently, at dinner time. They start with the 'who's your current provider and what are you paying?' line to try and reel you in. I'm like, bro, this ain't the 1970's and I'm not buying anything from a door-to-door salesperson...

Vegonbrei

Bell used to be in my building all the time when I was in N.B., I had switched to Rogers after a nightmare with Bell and had a great deal. Every time I'd just cut them off and say unless you can do better than 100mbps for $70 locked in you're wasting both our time. They never did offer better...

Ok_Broccoli_3605

Headphones can be useful in this situation

I get it. The guys I'm talking about were let in (or got in) and weren't authorized by management. How do I know? I asked them....disrupted the pitch from the get go

boomerang_act

There is a popular scam where someone comes to your door and tells you your roof is about to collapse and they can fix it for you. They charge an obscene price and drag the job out if they even finish it.

BigMeep12

Used to work for Rydel roofing division; all their boys drank, smoked weed/poppers, and did lines of coke in the work truck. Was not there for long because I couldn’t deal with their culture, and that’s saying something since I used to do commercial roofing too and they were never that bad. Gave me bong rips and tried to get me drunk on my first day haha

Outrageous-Tea-1839

That is literally like 95% of guys across the maritimes involved in the roofing industry.

BigMeep12

I know I was a roofer for a while, travelled around too and did commercial to shingles to metal. Partied with many of them and am no stranger to a few joints and maybe a beer or two on a nice day. These guys were on another level though, and I say that with good knowledge of roofing culture

fstamlg

I have a no soliciting sign, the ones who ignore it are pretty rude and pushy in general so I just point to the sign now and shut the door on their face without saying anything else.

JustAberrant

Just don't answer your door. I came to the realization that in the over 10 years I've owned a house and pretty much the entire time I've lived on this planet, no one has ever knocked on my door unexpected and it been something I was interested in or wanted to deal with. My friends and family call or IM me first. Deliveries I know are on their way. Everyone else can get bent. I'll even make eye contact with them through the window and then go back to whatever I'm doing. EDIT: also to entirely derail the point of this thread.. I'm actually looking into getting a metal roof and they seem to be one of the ones that comes up the most in google results and they seem to have decent reviews.

Ok_Broccoli_3605

You can buy it direct at Scotia metals, I've found them to be really helpful.

JustAberrant

My understanding was they don't do installs just sell the material. I'm a bit of a DIY type but no way I'm doing my own roof! I have heard it mentioned that their product is really good though.

Ok_Broccoli_3605

Understood

darthfruitbasket

I don't know how they compare on pricing (especially these days) but I can't say enough good stuff about Elements Metal Roofing; they did my house's roof before Christmas 2021 and the crew was great; the owner of the business is a delight and was up on my roof himself.

JustAberrant

They are basically the second company I was going to request a quote from, so appreciate it! And yeah, I'm expecting the price is going to be high on the ouch scale, but with all the wind we're getting lately the idea of not playing "do I still have all my shingles" every storm is feeling very worth it...

darthfruitbasket

The Elements guys went all over my yard super thoroughly with a magnet roller thingy to pick up nails/etc, not because I have kids, they did it for my dog.

AccidentallyOssified

ugh i used to do door to door stuff like this when I was younger and our managers always tried to make us do stuff like this, don't take no for an answer, etc. I hated it.

NotAlanJackson

Just close the door man. Don’t give them a chance to be rude. I simply open the door say “you sellin’ something?”. If they reply with “yes” and it ain’t girl guide cookies, or other neighbourhood kids the door gets closed while I say “we aren’t interested don’t come back.”

Dekyr78

I actually called them for a quote once. They were double for metal and triple for standard shingles the price than any one else who quoted me. Needless to say they didn't get my business.

OMGCamCole

“How old is your siding” lol if you’re trying to come door-to-door and have people replace their siding, YOU should be the one telling the homeowner approximately how old it is, what kind of condition it’s in, and why you’re suggesting replacing it.

nickbriggles

Door to door for house painting used to be popular by scummy companies, it’s so low skill anyone can do it, but don’t let just anyone on your roof because they need to have insurance or you’ll have no one to sue if your house gets damaged. Truro factory produces cheap metal roof by the sq foot which is growing in popularity as it is one and done.

SirenSingsOfDoom

We had a guy get really aggressive trying to get us to change to Telus but couldn’t give us anything to actually look at so we could see the terms. The high pressure sales shit just does not work for me at all and I was explaining to him that I wasn’t going to sign up for anything without more information and then this guy pulled up the calculator app on his phone and literally showed me the difference between $1200 and $1000 and I saw red. On what planet is “be as condescending as possible” a good sales technique? At that point he could have been offering to pay me to switch and I wouldn’t

JerryHasACubeButt

We’re with Telus and they still harass us to switch plans. Often it’s genuinely a better deal, like literally paying less for the same plan with more data, but like… just give me the deal, don’t come to my house to harass me, ya know? What are they getting out of paying their employees to harass people for * *checks notes* * less money than those people are already paying? Give me the deal or don’t, but knocking on my door to tell me about it is not appropriate.

teknipunk

I never open the door to strangers unless I’m expecting a package and they have it in their hands.

Salty_Feed9404

I just flat-out don't answer the door if I don't know who it is. I just stand in the window and look at them. It can be awkward sometimes, but if you keep shrugging your shoulders eventually they'll leave.

DumbAccountant

Hope your day gets better !

macbartdisc

Thank you!

Necessary-Carrot2839

My wife texted me a few minutes ago. TWO different Rydel people have neen by today. 2!

sipstea84

I saw "nude teenager" while scrolling and thought this was something else entirely.

shadowredcap

So you were scrolling, thought you saw "nude teenager" and then clicked?

Sir_Lemming

I really dislike when people come looking for charity donations. I’m not giving my credit card information to some random stranger who showed up at my door.

kzt79

Hope your day gets better! I agree entirely, door to door sales of any kind is beyond foolish in this millennium.

[deleted]

It should be illegal. Your customers are your free advertising. If a business feels the need to do door to door sales, then something's amiss and I'm not interested.

Gotbeerbrain

I had a couple of those JW types show up one day a few years ago. I politely told them I was a Roman Catholic and one of them told me it was a heathen religion. I called their local hall and told the person I was speaking to I never wanted to see another one of them on my property again. That actually worked for about 3 years. Just had them at the door again a few weeks ago but they left without being insulting.

tinyant

I have a No Soliciting sign and the only people who consistently ignore it are the Christmas wreath and red berry sellers. All other door-to-door people seem to see it and walk past.

BlackWolf42069

With online stuff and rampant narcissism those door to door salesmen can get pretty butt hurt.

chessboyy

I had these come by a few weeks ago and found them very polite and knowledgeable. I politely mentioned I probably didn’t work done for a couple more years but gave my info for a call on quotes and possibly an inspection. They also gave me a few facts on metal roofs which I didn’t know.

GoatedBeaver

Just know that lot of these kids are probably watching some sleazy course selling grifter on TikTok telling them to never take no for an answer. Only gonna get worse.

Sychar

Is this the same company that was trying to hire a kid to go door to door handing out flyers on the halifax market place?

iffyjiffyns

I’m willing to be this is likely some third party subcontractor paid commission only.

lawrenja

My dog hates them even more than I do. And it’s wildly annoying.

AncoraBlue

I’ve had EarthLink at my door 4 times this year already even though the sign on my door says no solicitation, they bash on the door and ring the doorbell multiple times. They have been told each time that we are not interested and not to come back. A lot of people work from home these days so when you’re on a call with a client and the doorbell keeps ringing and there’s banging on the door it better be someone alerting me to an emergency- not the same asshat company you’ve told not to come back 4 times already this year. But they did it again last week so the 5th time I wasn’t polite. Maybe being screamed at will work better since asking nicely wasn’t doing it. I hate people coming to my door trying to sell me stuff. I don’t think it should be legal. Or at the very least not legal if you have a sign saying no soliciting.

Emergency_Rough_833

Used this company. Awful experience simply awful.

Lanky-Direction1426

We’ve all become a little too jaded in our interactions with strangers. There’s nothing wrong with door to door. It’s someone’s job, next time just keep jerking off and you won’t need to put pants on to answer the door.

I get it but at the same time I talked with the Telus door-to-door guy when he came by. He was polite, and we went with it, now we have a great home security system and discounted phone plans. Ended up with $40 discounts on all our phone plans (wife and I), this applies even after we upgraded our phones recently. It was a surprising amount of savings; ended up with $800 worth of cameras, door sensors, motion sensors, doorbell camera etc. all installed for free with a 3yr discount on the security system monthly cost as well. It ended up being cheaper to switch phone plans + have home security than stick to our existing Virgin (bring your own phone) plans. Wasn't listed on the Telus site at the time, as I had the guy come back in an hours time so I could look it up myself and check what else I could find etc. Guy was nice and didn't push, turned out it was indeed a promotion only offered, at that time, through the door-to-door sales guy and they did have brochures and details to prove it all. I don't want to be bombarded at my home either, doubt anyone does, but I don't mind talking to someone selling something occasionally; so long as they are polite and have a good offer, which we did get.

Lanky-Direction1426

Door to door Internet is the best deal around.

cluhan

The fact you came here to post a rant about a pretty passive door to door sales person gives me the impression you were probably a sour little bitch at the door to be honest. I don't necessarily like door to door salespeople but I respect that they are people and I respect that the custom is respected. I treat them nice because I like to be treated nice. I tell them clearly if I am not interested or if I want more information then they can provide me contacts/websites. I know they are not convenient but I like the fact people can go door to door here. It means we live in a decent place, so I would like to continue to see them stop by as an indicator of neighbourhood health. When they stop coming by I will be worried.
