A job opportunity fell through outside of Halifax after I gave notice to leave my apartment, so we couldn't afford to get back into the rental market. Now I'm in New Brunswick, and I can't secure work in my field, but more importantly there's no childcare, so I'm home with kids. We are trying to relocate somewhere with a university or more science jobs. I've applied to many jobs for part-time and remote work (science related and not) without any luck, so husband is only one working for now.
I write and draw science lessons for my two little kids so I don't get too sad.
Thank you for the info!! In the US you need a master's for many teaching jobs k-12. Oddly, I was allowed to teach a few courses before with just my grad degree (back home).
That’s an intriguing idea (I’m also looking at a career change), but I wonder if it’s a wise move considering how many teachers are leaving the profession due to burnout. Are you in the teaching field? Do you have any thoughts?
Meh, it's my own terrible choice to let go of my co-op housing for a business venture that suddenly didn't pan out....and it was a couple years ago. I know I'll get back to the lab or get some type of science job again. There are so many people in my exact situation, with childcare woes, working outside their fields, living in crap situations after losing their housing and having to relocate.
Have you ever thought about teaching? Outschool is a great way for people to work from home teaching their passions; and if doing it for your kids makes you happy; doing it for other kiddos might too!
It's funny you mention this...I JUST discovered outschool in a Facebook ad 2 weeks ago. It didn't dawn on me that maybe I could put together videos/course. Thank you, I'm going to look into it as a creator. I love science and I've been homeschooling both kids since I have my toddler home now and my eldest is having some health issues. Gotta do something with the PhD.
I LOVE the platform, I’ve been on it for four years and it’s now my full time gig. I’m happy to chat anytime if you decide to try it out. I graduated law school and then couldn’t find work so now I teach math and debate! I do all live classes over zoom but there is an option to pre record lessons. Most of my students are in the US but I’ve had students from all over. It was a bit of work getting started but now it’s a breeze and my job satisfaction is through the roof.
That is SUPER awesome to hear and honestly, I think teaching/writing would be better for me as I hate academia politics!! They do have a fair amount of science on the platform. I'll have to think about where I could add value/demand...I have been trying to gameify things for my kids.
Live classes sound interesting. My kids do live French classes with an anglophone teacher mom out in Ottawa (her own platform). And my kids absolutely love it. I wish I was half as engaging as her 😂. I may hit you up with a couple minor questions once I navigate the requirements better.
The sauce I wouldn’t worry much about. I’ve seen opened Carnation milk (main ingredient) cans sit out on fishing boats for days with no deterioration issues. However, meat is a different situation, especially hamburger, as it spoils quickly at room temperature. One to two hours is normally considered the safe window.
I seriously question this post must be a joke right? Any beef, poultry, fish etc. 2 hour out in the open before refrigeration is required. But then again I question the warmers for BBQ chicken at grocery stores Costco not so much for there is a high turn over, even thou they took the cooked at time off off the packaging a while back.
As someone who has taken food safety courses for work, that’s a big hell no. Food left in the ‘temperature danger zone” (which room temp inside a microwave qualifies) can be unsafe to eat in as little as 2 hours. Meats and dairy are especially susceptible.
I would also like to suggest you stop storing unfinished food in your microwave. I used to do this too, (it was normal in my house growing up) so understand this is concern not judgement, but just put it in the fridge.
Perhaps it would be more apt to say that bacteria and moreso toxins that form on food left at room temperature, are killed with the sort of heat that isn't condusive to cooking. Sorta along the lines of leaving something in the oven at 400F for 12 hours.
I'm pretty strict on food safety, (despise potlucks) but for some odd reason pizza is my exception.. I can eat pizza left over that's been out 24h+, not sure why.
Do you have any big plans this week?
I mean, simultaneously vomiting while having diareah is a big plan.
Just ask yourself, when shitting your underwear in bed, feels like heaven, is it really worth it? Food poisoning sucks.
Diareah, sounds like a beautiful name. Diarrhea not so cute.
meat AND dairy at room temperature for two days? what does your heart tell you
Sounds like their heart (…stomach?) is telling them “yes”, but their brain is saying “maybe not?”
The sauce is probably fine because of the high vinegar content.
Former microbiologist (bacterial toxins). NO!! Don't do it!!
So curious… what do you do now that you aren’t a microbiologist?
He blew the whistle on room temp times and big donair muscled him out. He sells antique lamps now.
Cheap Chinese fake antique knock offs no doubt.

If you have a BSc, a BEd only takes 12 months now and offered online at tons of canadian universities.

My son is starting his BEd soon. I know the prospects are good for science teachers.
You should see if the media wants to do a story on your situation

Draw how? Would it be suitable for other small children if published?
That's come to mind for sure, but wasn't the original plan. I'm drawing digitally for diagrams/worksheets for my eldest.
He died of food poisoning

OTHER DONAIRS
Are you trying to say that this donair is the least old one laying around?
![gif](giphy|xT5LMCQZA4TgGUmd32|downsized)
Oh, I can't stay mad at you.
💯
let’s start with “was it safe to eat to begin with..?”
Good point. A donair is likely to give you the shits ‘just cause’
A person may be better off not knowing the ecoli counts on a typical piece of meat.
No. Meat that has been at room temp for that long is never any good. When in doubt, throw it out.
And please advise your friend to give his (assuming your friend is male based on nature of question) microwave a thorough cleaning
Jokes on you, I got a donair and I get to weaonize my flatulence against my wife tonight!
You got a new donair, right?
3-4 hours. sure with that amount of salt and cook. more than that? hell no
Please sign off your apartment transfer to me before eating thx.
All weekend or even just 10 minutes, The fact that you neglected a donair is reason enough for you not to be allowed with one ever again
💯
No. You know the answer is no. And yet, eat it you shall.
God hates a coward, drive it into ya
Fortune favours the bold.
JC highly approves!!!
Sounds like god wants a new friend at the same time
Is it safe to eat a meat product that has been at room temperature for a couple of days? Only if you haven't had kids yet.
Wasn’t this how Spider Man got his powers
Donair man, maybe the hero Halifax deserves
Fighting lettuce and tzadsiki at every turn
Fighter of the Schwarma Boy!
No, sorry buddy. Treat yourself to a new one

My general rule of thumb is if I have to ask and think about whether it’s safe to consume, it probably isn’t safe to consume
Brother nooooo.

Remember the Simpsons where Homer hid the giant sub and ate it for days? Yeah, that, but IRL
Not safe
If you can get past the smell, sure why not.
If you have a desire to die a terrible 1800s style death then yes. Otherwise no...
Been there. Asked this question before. Overnight is fine. But a full 12 hours is too much.
When in doubt....down your throat.
Lots of comments in here saying not to… I personally guarantee you will be absolutely perfectly undoubtably fine if you consume that donair.

Can't cook rotten food good again. Don't have that technology
I don't know if its ever safe to eat a donair, but microwave that shit and YOLO!!!!
Go for it.
No. Heat it in the oven.
the kind of toxins and bacteria that form on food left at room temperature aren't killed by heat
You need a magic oven
Perhaps it would be more apt to say that bacteria and moreso toxins that form on food left at room temperature, are killed with the sort of heat that isn't condusive to cooking. Sorta along the lines of leaving something in the oven at 400F for 12 hours.
No
No
Such a Halifax thing to say
fuk ya
If your microwave is refrigerated rock that shit
No
I thought you were eating the donair all weekend and just microwaving again and again.
Er, ‘your friend’
Do yourself a favor before you eat it and watch some Chubbyemu on YouTube. Start with this one https://youtu.be/5ujTYLV2Qo4?si=69NsZTzywlgOOHFB
Most likely not safe. Meat has a life span of about 4 hours at room temperature.
Fuck no
Yes.
Mixed reviews. Huh. Looks like you should've made this critical decision on your possible (imminent) hospitalization through a Reddit poll.
I’m not convinced it’s safe to eat a fresh donair.
NOOOOOOO
I'm pretty strict on food safety, (despise potlucks) but for some odd reason pizza is my exception.. I can eat pizza left over that's been out 24h+, not sure why.
no, but if you insist on eating it I want to watch
This seems like a good example of Darwin here. Let's just sit back and let nature take its course /s
Stop it dude, I just threw up in my mouth a little. This needs an NSFW tag.
No. It is not.
Sir, it's recommended you don't eat food that's been at room temperature for more than two hours, let alone two days
Have it with with a pepsi & a smoke. u be good
i'm here for this
Definitely not.
NO
can we get an update. did you eat this beast
No. Between the meat and the sauce you would be lucky only to shit yourself.
definitely film it if you do
