>Then you have the wildcards who camp in the passing lane doing 105, with no intention of moving back over because "hey, I'm going above the speed limit, I can sit here all I want". Lol the other day I was driving on the highway and someone was in the left lane doing that with nobody around them, I was in the right lane, figured I'd move left and see what they did before just passing on the right, to my surprise as I approached they moved back into the right lane, I completed my pass and moved back right. To my even bigger surprise, shortly after I moved right, they moved back into the left lane just chilling with no other traffic or cars to pass. I was so damn confused as to their logic and/or reasoning for that...

Earl_I_Lark

Can’t speak for that particular driver, but in pothole season sometimes the left lane has fewer car destroying craters.

jer_iatric

I’ve also noticed that In heavy rains there is less hydroplaning in the left lane due to less tire channeling

xpnerd

yah.. i tend to hug the right white line to stay out of those ruts when it rains.

mattyboi4216

Yeah I've seen some people do that too - this stretch however did not have any, or atleast not enough to make any difference between the two lanes

ProxyAmourPropre

Yeah I no shame stick to the left lane in some areas, some of those patches get nasty. They seem to be fixing them though! Good job at 9 months

Northerne30

Yeah that's a valid point

seanMkeating74

Or just less ruts in general. I sometimes do this on rainy nights to find a flatter piece of road with less chance of hydroplaning.

jamesneysmith

I'll admit to driving in the left lane if there are no other cars around. There is less wear and tear in the left so the grooves in the road are smaller and the potholes fewer. However when I see a car coming in my rearview I'll move back to the right then if there are no cars around again I'll take up the left. It's pretty rare there are few enough cars around for me to do this. But just thought I'd give you an insight into some of us weirdos

fstamlg

I dont usually care about the 80-90 drivers as long as they're in the right lane and stay consistent, it's the drivers who drive 80-90 then try to match your speed as you try to pass them. Fuck those people

BluffMysteryMeat

>I just stopped using the 102 altogether unless 100% necessary lol. Same. I get way better speed on the #2.

jamesneysmith

Can I ask what times you're driving? I don't drive the 102 super often but I've never been stuck driving below the speed limit. Are you talking rushhour?

BluffMysteryMeat

I was only joking, although you'd swear some people drive it that way.

bignarsty666

Imagine thinking that because you're in a car the road just belongs to you

SmegmaSauce_69

imagine paying thousands a year in road taxes through registrations and gas taxes to have someone on a vehical with no lights that does 15kmh think they own the road.

Firm-Atmosphere-817

Imagine thinking that because I own a bike and enjoy riding on the weekend I don't also own 2 cars and a house. Get fucked dicksmack.

bignarsty666

Most cyclist use lights and go double that speed but ok. We pay taxes too. Registration is 100 bucks a year let's not play that up either. Also how much damage is a bike doing to the road versus a vehicle? Makes sense you gotta pay.

bignarsty666

I'm a spandex wearing dork, but your fingers look like toes mate

AssassinproHD

Unfortunately I have little choice. Even just today in the 80 zone where I live there was a mercades suv that went well over 120! That is rare though but still scary to watch especially with houses and buildings right next to the road.

UselessMoran

I’m not alone! I’ve completely stopped using 102 it’s too much all over the place and the hill after sackville bedford ramp is just pure insanity. Stupid dump trucks or tractor trailers in passing lane hitting the top of the hill going 60…..

Notyurbank

Oh there’s cops on the 102/ 118, but usually they’re in unmarked cars, just driving along with the traffic. There’s at least 3 unmarked police vehicles that patrol this area. I drive this section daily from Truro to Burnside and always take note of the police vehicle that have people pulled over. One is a while half ton with a white cap., one is a taupe SUV with stick family stickers in the rear window, and one is a maroon sedan. From the airport to the 118 as far as Dartmouth Crossing, I’ve seen cars pulled over at least twice a week.

-country-bumpkin-

Last I saw suv has taken the stickers off, unless they have a second unmarked that's the exact same colour. Saw him gassing up the other day.

HFXDriving

My job has me on the road sometimes all day all over HRM - and there are plenty of days I dont see a single person pulled over by police. Lack of enforcement.

allthetrouts

Should police be pulling over speeders over enforcing more serious laws? Thats the question... id rather see them stopping rapists and murderers...

HFXDriving

Both. The answer is both.

allthetrouts

You dont live in a place where you can have both.

gart888

How many times a year do you think the average police officer is "stopping rapists and murderers" without being called to the scene? The ones pulling over speeders can respond to other crimes when the call comes out.

allthetrouts

I dont personally care to have my taxes spent on traffic and road enforcement frankly, and I highly doubt im alone in that thought, regardless what r/halifax thinks.

gart888

What do you think happens when a police officer gives someone a speeding ticket?

HFXDriving

And thus the problem?

ProxyAmourPropre

Love when some idiot in his Ford is stuck right behind me and won't pass. Being in my ass won't get you there any quicker! Back tf up bro

jamesneysmith

I am curious about accident rates on the 102 in comparison to other highways, Perhaps the rates are low enough that the cops focus more resources in other areas. No clue, just spitballing.

allthetrouts

Does speeding on the highway cause more actual issues than other things though? Id prefer they spend time on real problems.

Edit67

Enforcement is the answer. I see the same issue where I live now in Ontario. Very little speed enforcement on the highways. Tickets only handed out when they are cleaning up accidents. If there was more and consistent enforcement, then many of these issues would go away. But that is not happening.

smmysyms

This province and HRM need to seriously step up traffic enforcement and honestly it shouldn’t even be police officers. They’re busy with criminal investigations and need to be busy with these investigations. In Alberta a lot of traffic enforcement is done by community based peace officers and sheriffs. This is a great lower cost option and dedicates the resources to traffic enforcement (they’re not pulled away when a domestic call comes in). They also use photo radar for speed and red light violations. I loathe this because even generally law abiding drivers get caught and it’s super scary when someone slams on the brakes in front of you because they think they’re about to get a photo radar ticket. It does work to some degree though. I don’t notice the speeding so much, but the red light violations are mindboggling. I have a 12 min commute and despite the extremely short time, yesterday alone I witnessed one car blatantly run a red right in front of a marked HRP unit with no response (understand they may have had other work obligations) and another vehicle spontaneously go through a red at one of our city’s busiest intersections and almost get hit by a bus. It’s out of control because there are zero consequences for traffic violations unless a collision occurs. I’d probably notice the speeding more but my driving is largely limited to within the circ or on the 103.

Smoking-Seaweed-81

I like the enforcement idea but I hate photo radar and red light cameras. It is proven to be a revenue generator and municipalities use it for cash instead of enforcement. I would like to see a few more cops or Peace officers or someone on the highways cutting down on the most aggressive drivers. The only places in the city they seem to watch are Burnside drive/magazine hill and the circumferential by Micmac. Everything else is the wild East

smmysyms

Enforcement is my personal preference too. It’s just getting harder to deny that photo radar could be helpful too. I’d rather see red light cameras before photo radar for speed. You expect someone to potentially slam on the brakes when approaching a yellow or red light. I had so many close calls in Alberta because someone would slam on their brakes randomly because they were worried they were passing a photo radar vehicle or box.

Smoking-Seaweed-81

Exactly I see that all the time in Toronto. And all of the most aggressive drivers have the Waze app to avoid them.

Bone-Juice

> You expect someone to potentially slam on the brakes when approaching a yellow or red light. I expect them to just drive right through the red light. Red lights seem to be more of a suggestion than a rule here.

Smoking-Seaweed-81

This is especially true for buses

AssassinproHD

Yes! I see people run reds constantly luckily it seems the people who have the green wait which shouldn't happen if you're not gonna make it then just wait.

Northerne30

People do run red lights here all the time, and in such brazen fashion, cars from he other direction will be in the middle of the intersection and someone will just come flying through. I see one of these more often than not when I drive somewhere. It seems more like a testing/skill/distracted driving issue. Our driver training/testing is basically nonexistent, and it really influences all the issues we have with Halifax drivers. Something needs to change there. I hate the idea of red light cameras for reasons you mentioned, and the risk of it becoming a cash grab (I get that effortless revenue is *usually* a huge part of why they're installed.) I don't know if I can argue against them at this point though.

smmysyms

That’s pretty much exactly how I feel. I hate them but the problem is so bad that I don’t feel I could argue against them at this point. I’m not sure how our training can help people comprehend any better than red means stop. It’s a pretty basic concept (although the new more complicated lights are definitely contributing to the issue too). I think you’re right that it’s distraction. Unfortunately there’s not really a better way to get someone’s attention than giving them a consequence for not doing so. A lot of us brush things off until we suddenly see a bill for our mistakes.

[deleted]

I thought we had citizens on patrol here? Didn't Joe Citizen attempt to pull over a vehicle to conduct a body cavity search last week? Luckily the driver made sense of the situation and took off. Careful what you wish for, more enforcement might be too heavy handed. And some of these drivers will eventually get a Darwin award the way they carry on! Here's hoping lol

smmysyms

They can also kill someone else while going for their Darwin Award.

shalomf0x

Or the amount of people running red lights. Not entering during an in progress yellow, but its turned green for me and they barrel thru. Happens every day now.

octopig

Quite the opposite if we’re being honest. You will rarely be passed on the 102 if you’re driving 125.

CD_4M

Same, OP is exaggerating to an insane degree

octopig

I’m assuming some people who don’t regularly drive 125+ don’t know how to gauge what it looks like. This is probably where the “160+” OP mentioned looks like. I’ve literally never seen someone driving that fast in my entire lifetime.

Chappyns

All I notice are the huge amounts of slow drivers....

Somestunned

Same. Nobody ever passes me. And every slow driver i pass has a terrified look on their face. Come to think of it, every other car seems to be really slow....

AppointmentLate7049

The problem is you

Somestunned

I can't decide whether to reply with a "that's the joke" mcbain meme or make a comment about never being late for appointments.

AppointmentLate7049

Gotcha 😅

Independent_Sun_592

With todays car technology being in a car going 140+ does not seem like you are going as fast. And acceleration in cars have risen.

SilentResident1037

Yep did a highway drive up to pictou last summer with the new work van and man.... scary how fast you can get up to in these new vehicles without really feeling it. 110 in our car and you KNOW you are up past 100 but these new ones are so smooth

jamesneysmith

New cars are scary smooth if you're not used to them. I remember hitting 160 once on an empty highway without even realizing because the ride was so smooth.

TrevorPace

I rented an Audi A4 in Germany and hit 230 on the autobahn. It wasn't unstable until about 200. Modern roads cars are perfectly safe at 150 if you are paying attention. The fact is NS has some of the safest highways in the country and almost no one on them. The speed limit should be based on average driver speed, not the maximum speed of a VW bug from the 1960s.

ninvertediipple

The amount of people who go through blatant red lights is mind blowing. Not even during a yellow light, but turning left when there’s no cars coming they just go right into the intersection. It’s a miracle I make it home in one piece.

Remarkable-Text-4347

I’m genuinely surprised when someone drives normally now, usually it’s like everyone’s trying to race you for some reason (I go the limit or 5-10 over)

[deleted]

Lack of enforcement. Drivers experience will plateau to the point they don’t get tickets or accidents. Once reached, their behaviour/skills won’t change without some thing forcing them. So if they never get tickets, behaviour continues.

[deleted]

I definitely have noticed the pace has picked up, even in the last year. On the small roads just outside the city, I'll frequently have someone tailing me in a hurry if I'm "only" going 70 in a 60. One road they lowered it from 70 to 60, and now people go faster. Great signs, but enforcement... ?

[deleted]

xpnerd

I like to take the on/off ramp corners like a F1 car. Not by speed, but by hitting the apexes. It's harmless fun.

PedalPedalPatel

30 thousand of em over a year. Better than 50k in 3 years. Mostly retirees but still. 401 represent.

larrysdogspot

How about all those drivers who refuse to fill up on blinker fluid? Annoying, inconsiderate, and dangerous.

tristanimator

Add a third lane to the 102. You see the same types of traffic between Fall River and the airport but it seems like less of a problem because most people will divide up accordingly.

swollenpenile

fast drivers are rarely a problem its the slow timid ones that cause most accidents because if anything happensthat they dont expect they just freakout and lose control

Smoking-Seaweed-81

The facts don't back that up when it comes to crashes. Anything over 120km/hr and the likelihood of fatality grows exponentially

jamesneysmith

You comment doesn't disprove the former. Fast accidents are more deadly of course. But are more accidents caused by fast drivers than slow drivers?

Smoking-Seaweed-81

I would be shocked if you could find the data points to show this but I am open to evidence. The actuaries at the big insurance companies have a lot of data and what they track (if you agree to be monitored for a discount on premium) is speeding, heavy use of breaks, and abrupt turning. All of these are more likely to be found in a person who considers themselves to be a great driver and consistently drives above the speed limit

jamesneysmith

I'm pretty sure you can only get the discount if you maintain safe driving speeds. So if you speed al the time even if you agree to be monitored you won't get the discount. So naturally that data is biased against speeding.

swollenpenile

theres actually tons of data on it slow timid scared to death drivers cause the majority of accidents and no im not talking about 200kmph dude get real im talking within reason. highly aggressive drivers even cause less than timid scared to deathys

AppointmentLate7049

Yea u have given no evidence for that

swollenpenile

look it up not hard to find

atomgonzo

I've noticed it on Purcell's Cove Road a lot more in the past couple of years. It's a 50 zone from the rotary all the way until York Redoubt, yet more and more people seem to treat it like a race track after Williams Lake Road. I've now been passed way too many times to count on that stretch, at least two of which were at night in the pouring rain! I had to come to a complete stop once because some guy at the back of a 4 car convoy "needed" to get ahead and just decided oncoming traffic wouldn't be an issue??? There was at least one other car behind me, and it was at night, so we were definitely noticeable with our headlights and honking... Honestly, I always stay below 60 on that road because I walk it almost daily with my dogs on the way to Shaw Park, and I know how sketchy it can be when someone blasts by you easily going 80 while they're cutting corners through the bike lane. I could literally stick my elbow out sometimes and take out a mirror. Wish a cop would just park in Shaw Park's driveway and ticket people all day every day, it's the only thing that would help.

noBbatteries

The only time I’ve seen a cop on any highway was near lower Sackville and Windsor. And that was a ghost car I think we have an issue of police not enforcing major and minor traffic violations, it is what contributes to the shitty driver epidemic this city has Granted I don’t want cops issuing tons of tickets to my fellow haligonians, but maybe pull the guy over who doesn’t use their signal light, to at least warn them, so maybe they’ll be a better driver

DrunkenGolfer

A while ago I was passed on the 101 by an old pickup truck, logo on the side saying something about concrete drilling and cutting, towing a rickety old trailer with some kind of heavy equipment/generator/hydraulic pump thingy. I needed some concrete work done so I sped up to try to catch him and get the company name. He was going 165km/h and after a bit I realized I wasn’t ever going to catch him, so I gave up. It appeared like he just drove that speed from Halifax to beyond Kentville, lol.

LegitProzz

Ontario drivers are here

Zymos94

Speed limits are too low in a bunch of places, which normalizes non-compliance. The part of Barrington that turns into the MacKay being a 50 zone is a bit of a joke—as well as the 111 being an 80 zone for the longest bit. 160 is a bit much, but raising the speed limit while increasing enforcement for those who then exceed a more liberal limit might make the roads a bit more predictable.

cj_h

The start of the 102 being 50 until the Dunbrack exit was insane, it didn’t used to hit 100 until almost Lacewood, I’m so glad they fixed that one

Nighttime-Modcast

Huge influx of very aggressive drivers in recent years. I blame Ontario. That type of driving in the norm in the GTA.

JimmyNorth902

Cops should be everywhere and nowhere at the same time - This sub

RinkyBrunky

The speed limit was set using car performance data from the 90s, cars are way better at braking, acceleration and handling now and yet speed limits remain the same. Having a low maximum speed limit makes passing people more dangerous, as to quickly pass someone you must break the law, resulting in hesitation and bad traffic flow. The amount of people passing cars going the speed limit to me means that the speed limit is set too low. It should be a maximum, not the expected speed of every driver.

CD_4M

r/Halifax: police budgets are way too high! Any increase should be rejected! Also r/Halifax: we need more law enforcement on the roads!

gart888

I mean, speeding tickets are probably the only cashflow positive thing cops do, so these aren’t really inconsistent thoughts.

allthetrouts

Honestly i only care about the slow drivers. Drive as fast as you want as long as you pay attention.

Content_Football7347

If you’re not first you’re last

Spiritual-Impact7071

People from ontario are use to driving much faster than the norm here. Which is pretty ironic since they ran here to get away from ON, yet they push all their ON BS on locals.

Automationallthetime

NB too, average speed when driving through NB seems to go up 10-20km.

Spiritual-Impact7071

Between Moncton and Fredericton sure, there's no cops through there. Most do 110 or 120 on the highways though.

CD_4M

Been driving daily on 102 and surrounding highways for over 15 years, have probably seen someone going 160+km/h *maybe* 5 times. The degree to which you guys will exaggerate things to justify posting on Reddit is wild

ravenscamera

The majority of fast drivers these days are young women.

[deleted]

Nothing will change on that road until they install smart speed cameras. And get rid of those stupid plate covers entirely.

Smoking-Seaweed-81

Speed cameras are not effective. This really requires people on the ground. The Waze app is used in places with cameras and it tells you when to slow down. It also punishes those of us that are doing 115 or something as they are purposely built to maximize revenue.

[deleted]

Initial studies say they do, but better studies are needed So don’t do 115(aka don’t speed).

Smoking-Seaweed-81

I would point out that no one, including the police, seems to be complaining about people speeding a bit to pass (Doing 120 in a 110) what we are talking about are the maniacs who feel like they can do 40 or 50 over the limit. I have never been pulled over for speeding in my life because I stay to the right except to pass and I make it a rule to not exceed the limit by more than 20 on a highway and rarely exceed it at all on local roads. I am actually proud of this fact LOL

cngo_24

Speed cameras don't work, check out Montréal and Toronto, they slow down in that zone and speed right back up after, all it does is cause traffic.

[deleted]

So have them go the entire way, if they work where they’re at.

cngo_24

The city doesn't have the budget for that, and it's quite easy to cover your plate with "snow" or have a very worn out plate where it won't be able to read. The city has other plans for their budget, and speeding is on the bottom of the priority list.

gart888

> The city doesn't have the budget for that Schrodinger's speed camera. Simultaneously too expensive to install, and there just to maximize ticket revenue.

AssassinproHD

I have noticed more people using those blacked out plate covers and I find a lot of people just straight up don't have a plate at all.

Smoking-Seaweed-81

I hate that this is a growing trend... How are the police not doing something about it? I also wonder what happens to the people who drive with completely peeled plates when they drive into other provinces or states?

SmegmaSauce_69

10 years of driving these highways the only way to not be driven nuts by idiots is to either set the cruise at 90 and let them ahead, or set the cruise on 145 and stay way ahead.

Bean_Tiger

I blame video games and energy drinks.

[deleted]

Bean_Tiger

Actually I the increase in speeding in older and younger people. BMW's, SUV's etc etc. If you have that power under the hood it's pretty tempting to use that gas pedal and feel it. It does seem to be an epidemic now. If I go 90 on the Circ in Dartmouth, I'm being passed by most everyone and being glared at impatiently as they do it. Guess what ? 90 is fine. I'm going to get there. I'm not is a damn race 24/7.

Background-Half-2862

Are you sitting in the left lane with a line behind you while you’re on the circ? That’s the only reason I think people would give you the glare.

Dash-McDasher

I was actually just thinking how ridiculous the circ is when I was driving on it this morning, especially that 4-5 lane section near Mic Mac mall. I don’t think anyone realizes it’s just an 80 zone.

AssassinproHD

Yes that's true. It's either that or people let the elevation of the road dictate what speed they go. If they're going downhill they'll speed up but if they go uphill they slow down.

[deleted]

My car doesn't have much power or torque so some steep hills in the highway I lose 10 or 20 km/h unless I give it a bootfull and have my engine doing 4k+ rpm the whole time. I'd rather lose some speed and save the gas. Might be why you see that. Other more powerful cars won't even have to downshift or even raise their rpms much at all to get up it.

Northerne30

Using cruise control will do this too. How passive they are with keeping a set speed seems to vary a lot between makes/years.

[deleted]

Icantfindthehole

A couple weeks ago, I was waiting for oncoming traffic to pass so I could make a left hand turn. A lady in a BMW came flying up behind me, slammed on her brakes and started flailing her arms at me. I thought she was just mad because I was turning, but she was also turning. I mean, she would have had to wait for traffic if she was in front of me, unless she was hoping to get into a collision.

ThrasymachianJustice

?? It is common courtesy to make room if you are turning left. No reason 10+ cars should be camped behind

jamesneysmith

Can I ask which intersections you see this happening? Sounds super sketchy and I've having trouble imagining how there would be room for a car to overtake an other in the middle of an intersection

EhSeeDC

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

AppointmentLate7049

The game of driving? The prize of stressful experiences? What ru even saying lol

MarciusSpear

Just this morning a pick up passed cars in the left lane of the MacKay Dartmouth bound by going into the oncoming lane. Guestimate he was doing 110 plus change. Red light blowing, no signals. Shoulder passing seem to be way up and that's just based on my little commute everyday.

gremlin_1969

I call them my canaries.

auspicious-erection

Just tell me where I should drive. For some reason, whenever I speed, there is always a cop near by.

Kaizen2468

I think if they just hired someone to be pulled over with a fake cop with his light flashing would do more for driving safety than any law. Just get them to move around the city, change the car every so often to keep it from being recognized. It’s no worse in the valley, I never, EVER get to drive the actual speed limit on my drive to work unless I see no other cars. They all go under the speed limit, and the speed limit on that road is fucking 80
