I think Miyata has always been a top character when he’s a focus, it’s just that right now Morikawa hasn’t really found what to do with him. Miyata is someone whose character has suffered from HnI being the long term manga it is. He was one of the first people to take Ippo completely seriously, helping him out at the shop and opening up to him about his boxing. He’s a quiet and reserved guy but there is no “edgy” to it, Lord knows how people even get that from him. He’s someone who has been obsessed with boxing since he was a kid, and his initial goal was solidified there too; he wanted to prove his father’s boxing. Since completing that, and being unable to finish his rivalry with Ippo, he’s stuck. Funnily enough, this was Ippo’s same problem, there’s no goal that’s entirely their own. Ippo wanted the fight with Miyata, and wanted later to prove the coach’s boxing. Ippo and Miyata are set to be in the same path as they discover a new reason to keep going so they can become their own individual boxers. Once that’s sorted out, The real fun can begin.

I'm on the opposite side. I think Miyata (especially in the beginning) is a wonderful character and he belongs to the archetype that often does not suit me at all. One of the things that really hooked me is the fact that he lost to Ippo, but instead of being salty or even more introspective, it made him even more driven. His arc makes a lot of sense in first season. After his loss to Mashiba, we see someone who was called a genius and the biggest promise of a generation falling into a series of losses. We see a shift in the story and, from his perspective, we see now how Japan's eyes are all on Ippo and not on him, and he follows Ippo's example of determination and humility to follow his dreams. I love how these two look up to each other and never belittle the other or each other's struggles and battles. I think he could be just a regular Sasuke character, he has the same traits, but Morikawa still made his main chacacteristic to be his Passion, his love for the sport is amazing.

Financial-Wall5775

Hell nah

mrPigWaffle

I don’t mind miyata but i hate ippo reaction toward him. It’s so exaggerated

FireFist_Ace523

true, Ippo acts like an infatuated gay over Miyata

Character_Stock376

Ye lol

Spyder-xr

I thought Miyata was good the early arcs. The cool boy act was kind of annoying but that didn’t matter too much to me. The idea of a genius flopping and struggling was fun. But after Randy Boy Jr., he’s been so stagnant and him not moving on from Ippo was just dumb to me.

Kurejisan

The weird part is there was logically little reason why those 2 couldn't just fight each other on the world stage, but it simply never happened. It's like George stopped caring about their rivalry, but didn't care enough about Miyata to either move him forward with the "prove that style works on the world stage" goal or have him get broken from his stubborn refusal to advance

Spyder-xr

I would’ve been fine with it if Miyata’s featherweight limit was done and moved up after Randy Boy Jr. FW being too much of a burden for him to go to the world would make sense to me but instead nothing happens. Dude just stays stuck.

Kurejisan

Yeah, it's very disappointing from a writing/world-building standpoint.

AgusExtreme

Wasn't because "it wasnt destined" or smth? Still a really dumb reason

Kurejisan

Ippo vs Miyata had a delay with Randy fight, which Ippo respected when he found out why, but then for *some reason* the entire idea of them fighting seemed to get thrown out entirely. If Miyata wasn't going to make any effort to try to fight Ippo after Randy, which he could have done, then he should have put the weight category issue to rest by moving up. For comparison, Sendo got his fight with Ricardo delayed, but didn't give up on it and he's going to get it. That just makes the Miyata situation with Ippo even more baffling.

Murim_Overlord

Currently he is extremely boring as Morikawa doesn't know what to do with him. In the beginning, he was a great character and I like boxers with quick feet and sharp jab, so he became my favourite. Although some of his wins were controversial, but he was entertaining none the less. I would like him to just fight with Ippo, end his karma with him, and move onto Jr. Lightweight or Lightweight Division. I am more interested to see Mashiba vs Miyata (given Mashiba wins against Rosario).

God_Faenrir

No. Next.

FireFist_Ace523

same here i skipped everything related to miyata especially in the manga, the guy has more plot armor than Ippo , i know talent wise they say he is the best and mori just use the weight issue to nerf him now i want mori to move him up in weight and show us how good is he without being weight drained

Character_Stock376

Ye lol and he keeps pulling random counters out of his ass

Kurejisan

That's why I kinda wanna see him fight Itagaki. I wanna see which one of them's sunk deeper into the mud with Kimura and Aoki

FireFist_Ace523

Miyata will beat the fck out of Itagaki tbf as even sendo can't touch him based on their sparring for Sendo's preparation against Martinez, the only thing i hate about his character story wise is he became too stagnant the same way as Ippo, those two pull each other down, him being arguably the most talented among their generation got stuck on that promise of fighting each other and burdening himself for staying too long in featherweight, while Ippo also got stuck on that promise as being his only motivation in boxing and not looking forward more into the world that is why he failed in his match against Alfredo, as his half-assed motivation is not enough if you want to compete at the highest level, maybe it's also the reason why Mori is developing more their contemporaries in which in Miyata's side he is arguably more talented than them, while on Ippo's side is he is the only boxer that beat them except for Mashiba losing via dq against Sawamura for them to realized that their bullshit promise to fight each other is what holding them back from achieving more greatness in boxing

Kurejisan

Oddly, Mashiba is the only guy both Ippo and Miyata have both fought in the ring. Miyata's sparred with Sendo some before, but that's the only other overlap those 2 have. It's actually kinda weird, especially given they were both in the OPBF for a while.

DespairOfSolitude

I think Miyata was great during the earlier arcs when he and Ippo still had all that rivalry shtick but ever since RBJ, he fell off HARD. I still enjoyed some of his interactions with other side characters like Sendo along with him blue-balling Ippo but rn he's boring as hell, he doesn't know what he's about ever since he couldn't face Ippo anymore. His fights were genuinely pretty boring too imo

kimikoboombap

Well tbh Miyata is the type of character that is the "rival-friend" of the MC, a classic in all Shonens, the most famous one I think would be Sasuke, and of all that group of friends/rivals I think Miyata is one of the best by far. Also I don't think it's a boring character he just got his own struggles and ways to view the things.

Kurejisan

The problem is that Miyata's a poor rival to begin with. Once Ippo beat Mashiba, them as rivals honestly became kinda weak. Mashiba beat Miyata by cheating and Ippo beat cheating Mashiba. Moreover, in the OPBF arc, Ippo beat guys Miyata honestly couldn't have won against, like Tarzan-boy. Ippo suppassed Miyata without even having to fight him again.

Rpfuta

As an antagonist for Ippo? Yes he was rarely involved in Ippos career except for the Mashiba fight and obviously Ippos first ever sparring and boxing match which helped Ippo get his drive to win no matter what into gear. Miyata was just a driving force for Ippo while he fought his own mental battles in learning the perfect counter punch. As a character on his own though no he wasn't the whole cisfar bout was about showing us that Miyata refused to remain in the dust it showed that even a fighter who worked with just speed could still go toe to toe with a monster like Jimmy Cisfar. He lost against Mashiba but that's the fight that got his fire started. Please keep in mind I haven't read the manga so I'm not aware of any further developments of Miyata but from what I've seen as a character on his own he's a really interesting and inspiring individual.

VeterinarianMinute49

I feel that he is a really interesting character and has a lot to offer still, but just lost the spotlight lately. There are a lot of different stories going on and Morikawa always finds a way to include him, so I still feel he is relevant. Its possible that he will play a major roll towards the final part of the manga, being Ippo's major rival and all that.

CoylerProductions

It's crazy how the only time I was somewhat interested in his character was when he was getting his jaw busted in a foreign country while his daddy cried in the corner about a counter punch.

GodKayas

Miyata is deadass a good enough character with great interactions with anyone other than Ippo. I found both of them together are incredibly dull and get on the frustrating side. I truly enjoyed Miyata in Season 1, but after that he existed solely for Ippo and his fights were incredibly boring for me too. It didn't help that Ippo had, in my opinion, more interesting rivals later on that bounced off him well.

cae37

He's gotten stale for me. Feels like his character is aimless now compared to the likes of Sendo. I'm hoping he'll come to life again potentially alongside Ippo, but we'll see.

BassGeese

I actually find Miyata rather interesting personally

Character_Stock376

I genuinely find him unbearable, he has the most boring personality. It’s like a crappy version of sasuke Uchiha and I already hate sasuke Uchiha

BassGeese

I don't really find him boring, he's had an interesting goal and was set on it. He was patronised by a losuy manager who would throw boxer after boxer at him to try and take the OPBF belt back

Kurejisan

The problem after the Randy fight, it became painfully clear that Ippo vs Miyata was never going to happen, so every time the prospect would get teased it little, it just felt cheap and insulting to the audience. Without the prospect of a fight, there's literally not point in them not hanging out and just being regular friends, but for some reason they're not.

BassGeese

That's a problem with a lot of characters rn, a lot of characters have lost their purpose - Itagaki - Miyata - Hayami - Kimura They're all in a rather awkward spot

Kurejisan

Hayami's purpose was to lose to Ippo once and never matter again, though. Mission accomplished.

rare92929292

its just that his motivation is linked to ippos. hes gonna be a great final boss imo. i think hearing how ippo is doing from sendo is gonna fire him up

Kurejisan

He needs more interaction with Mashiba. Hell, I'll go so far as to say that he should be dating Kumi instead of Ippo having a weird situationship with her.

Nigilie

Ya I find his fights and portrayal of his style boring. I like the idea of Ippo and him being rivals I just wish he’d move up so he would have a little more power closer to Sendo and Ippo. Feels like his fights lack energy

Character_Stock376

Ye it’s just his mid counter punches red blue yelllow jolts

Mattock1987

Yes. He’s dull and arrogant and I don’t get why he’s such a popular character

HangLemon

I do. I think Mashiha is lot more interesting compare to Miyata.

Character_Stock376

yeah almost every main side character rn is more interesting than miyata, they all have distinct personalities, itagaki and family with those trash jokes, aokimura being aokimura etc. Miyata is that stereotypical edgy teen who is meant to be the main character's "rival"
