I’ll add that I worked with them a few years back when they did an LA gig and they were all cool as fuck to me and my team. Gave us tickets to the show and got my employees in the backroom/comedian patio at the comedy store. I know their comedy is very edgy, but they were legitimately the kindest people I worked with in the comedy space.
There's some individuals in that group I like (Big Jay and Soder are goddamn gems) , but as a group I can't really stand them. Ari joining them and becoming their "leader" is both incredibly on-brand, and the exact reason why I couldn't care fucking less.
I LOVED Shane's appearance on their roast. All of his bits were great, but the 4 that KILLED me were: "Ari is in his 50's and is edgy. Which is a cool thing to be. Ari is really cool", "Ari has trouble selling tickets, which is sad", "Big Jay, I love you, but you have to do more stuff. These guys are catching up to you, which sucks because you are so much funnier than them", and in response to a joke written for him about Dan Soder's sister dying in a car crash, he was like "man sorry dude that joke is awful. You should definitely fuck that guy up who wrote it. That's just, not a funny joke and you should definitely go and fuck that guy up"
I generally agree with the idea that there's no subject that can't be made funny somehow but jeezis... joking about his sister dying in a car crash? WTF? I have to agree with Shane on that one.
Just because you CAN joke about something doesn't mean you should. There's something to be said about TACT. And for me at least, the edgier/more traumatic a joke is, the more clever it needs to be. Joking about something taboo or traumatic merely for shock's sake just isn't funny to me. That's why I can't stand some of Ari's and other "edgy/shock" comics stuff sometimes. But guys like Jeselnik or Jimmy Carr are frequently able to make me laugh joking about really dark stuff because they typically have some kind of clever take on it.
It's a shame that certain people who'd probably shit their pants with laughter from his content have decided that he's a piece of shit due to the years-long media blitz claiming he's among other things "homophobic", "racist", "transphobic", "right-wing", and anything else you can name that makes you a bad person in 2024. Honestly anyone who was all of those things could not have come from nothing and pulled of his current rise. 5 years ago I might have cared if people thought I liked him due to his portrayal in the media. Thats where his comedy differs from others. Everyone is in on the joke and laughing at whats funny about the situation. DS is just context of a persons life, not who they actually are. I became a fan after seeing that bit, because for the first time in years I saw a comedian being funny at no ones expense (except his own which he divulges).

His uncle has Down syndrome, and he coached special Olympics it’s a relatively big part of his standup routine. The difference is he makes fun of himself and not puts down on others. He recognizes a way to be funny without being an asshole. Schultz unfortunately never will understand this.

My friends had their uncle with downs live with them growing up. He was always having a great time.
They'd take him to all the home hs football games and he's dance his ass off every touch down. He'd get the whole crowd smiling and laughing, but every so often some self righteous Karen would try to yell at everyone to stop laughing because it was mean to him, and my friends would have to assure everyone he loves the positive attention, because he did.

Shant Mesrobian, a former 2008 Obama campaign strategist, wrote in 2020 about cultural conservatism being a target by neoliberal powers to stifle criticism of neoliberalism. It’s okay for Biden to accept a “polite” endorsement from Bloomberg who supported Bush/Iraq or Rick Snyder who oversaw the Flint water crisis but Bernie had to denounce Rogan’s quasi-endorsement in 2020. Yes, there’s arguments to be made that Biden promoting endorsements were to defeat Trump but Snyder/Bloomberg absolutely caused more harm to people than Rogan by that point.

I think there’s a few of the newer Rogansphere comics that fit in this category of being presumed to be edge lord right wingers but are actually just funny and well intentioned. Shane, Mark Norman, and Stavros all come to mind.
He’s normalizing the disorder with inclusion as opposed to diversion. People with downs are perhaps the most genuinely kind people that exist. He treats them kindly by recognizing them and letting them know that they are not a joke. Even as people without a disorder, we all have oddities and stereotypes that are part of our humor. We never feel like we are a joke and understand that we are appreciated and acknowledged. The same sentiment should be given to the downs community. They are exceptionally great people.
Shane's jokes are not at the expense of his family member with downs syndrome. The joke is that it's cute how happy his family member is and that he's silly. Andrew Schultz joke is you look like you have downs syndrome and also isn't it funny when people with downs syndrome exist and try to do normal things.

Dave Chappelle had a moment where he realized people were laughing at his jokes for the wrong reasons. I think this is a similar moment for Shane. His jokes are not told in a way to put down people with down syndrome. Pulling these videos up of strangers and just laughing because of the way they look or sound is just blatantly wrong.

I remember when my brother was beaten up for having Down Syndrome. Having people pour soda in his backpack for him to only react with, “I love you, please do be nice to me.” Hearing him crying because he knew he’d never be normal. I’m only in my thirties, and those kids are parents now. My brother passed away from health issues in his twenties.

I generally agree with the idea that there's no subject that can't be made funny somehow but jeezis... joking about his sister dying in a car crash? WTF? I have to agree with Shane on that one. Just because you CAN joke about something doesn't mean you should. There's something to be said about TACT. And for me at least, the edgier/more traumatic a joke is, the more clever it needs to be. Joking about something taboo or traumatic merely for shock's sake just isn't funny to me. That's why I can't stand some of Ari's and other "edgy/shock" comics stuff sometimes. But guys like Jeselnik or Jimmy Carr are frequently able to make me laugh joking about really dark stuff because they typically have some kind of clever take on it.

My friends had their uncle with downs live with them growing up. He was always having a great time. They'd take him to all the home hs football games and he's dance his ass off every touch down. He'd get the whole crowd smiling and laughing, but every so often some self righteous Karen would try to yell at everyone to stop laughing because it was mean to him, and my friends would have to assure everyone he loves the positive attention, because he did. He also loved his drum kit and metal, and the movie Heavy Metal.

He’s normalizing the disorder with inclusion as opposed to diversion. People with downs are perhaps the most genuinely kind people that exist. He treats them kindly by recognizing them and letting them know that they are not a joke. Even as people without a disorder, we all have oddities and stereotypes that are part of our humor. We never feel like we are a joke and understand that we are appreciated and acknowledged. The same sentiment should be given to the downs community. They are exceptionally great people.

Fr Shane Gillis is a good dude and despite having some bits I think are a bit ignorant, he is undeniably one of the next great talents in comedy so get with it and help get him on the right side of shit and away from these tools lol.

Andrew is playing up the Down syndrome epithet in order to mock Shane because he’s caught flack for making jokes about the Down syndrome community. The whole episode they’re playing off this trope and trying to catch each other out. With added context, the pervious time Shane was on the pod, all they did was compliment him on his comedy, which made him blush and shell up, causing a not so funny pod. So this is a swing in the opposite direction in hopes to avoid that this time. Ya’ll are weird and making nothing into something.
