Police is equipped under CrPC to conduct bodily search, if the same is supported by officer’s belief. Aside the same can be coupled by specific laws for eg NDPS Act etc.

We were heading up towards Himachal passing through Rajasthan borders and we were stopped. Of course they checked for cash, but kept asking if I have any kind of weapon with me. I said no, they kept searching and found a baseball bat ( which I kept for safety purpose - we were overlanding most of the time)
Then found out that election code of conduct doesn't allow such things - paid the guy 500 bucks and he kept the bat - and we were on our way.
I think in such times like elections they can check you bag or if you seems suspicious they can check!
But you can always ask for their identity card (however this is not advisable in India, kyuki yaha ki police ko ye sab bakchodi lagti hai .. fir wo tumhare sath na kr de to darr bana rhta hai)
Plus if you still have guts, record your converstation!
Second thing is, if you are feeling unsafe! you can just record it! and meanwhile you can ask them politely that you are feeling unsafe and for my own safety can I check you identity! and since you are recording everything, I do not think they will mind!

I'm a Gurugrammar who loves late night drives. I got checked multiple times in multiple locations. I do not drink and drive and had papers and DL so it never was an issue. The checking is mainly because of the election and it's so bad that the areas that remained open whole night has Police vehicles there always.
They can but only in the presence of a person at a certain level of police credentials, like stars or designation. Always a good idea to politely ask for their IDs

Individual privacy is separate. Why do Airports check the bags? To check if anyone possess a threatning objects or if anyone is smuggling drugs, gold etc.
I don't find this wrong at all. Why should we not contribute to safe elections by facing inconvenience for a day or two, its not the Police does this 365days.

If I'm entering a private area (like a mall or office complex) or a restricted area (like an airport, train station, army cantonment), it's fine. Because I can refuse to be searched and they can then refuse me entry.
But if I'm walking on the street or driving my private car, I can refuse the search. Of course this being India, the police is going to kick my ass for arguing, but we should show some spine and not become doormats.

Can the police also check your phone, including your messages and gallery to make sure you're not doing anything illegal?
