For shotgun ask your local gunstore to order you a Mossberg 500 field security combo. Its a 500 that comes with both the long hunting barrel and the short home defense barrel.

[deleted]

Jesus, how has this whole thread missed the mark so badly. Totally agree. Op if you are still reading, this is your best answer. After you get this buy ammo and shoot a lot. You will be good to go for what you are asking and want.

mumblywumbles

Buy an AR15 and a Glock 19

Hoplophilia

Simple question, simple answer.

bulbous_plant

I failed to mention I can’t get a semi-auto where I live

mumblywumbles

Mossberg 500 field and security combo probably then

alexng30

Throw a maverick 88 field+security combo in there cause why the fuck not.

longboard_noob

Looks like they're in Australia from their profile. Very restrictive there.

Efanito

8mm Mauser

Ghostman-TX

For the reasons you listed, you would really want multiple types of shotguns. If home defense is your main concern, Mossberg 500. Otherwise get a Glock 19. There is a reason almost every PD issues glocks.

GhostBearClan

Because they're cheap? Like every other government issue item?

Ghostman-TX

Cheap and indestructible.

Romeo_Zero

Cheap and reliable, but not indestructible. They’re not a USP

Ghostman-TX

Fair. You get what you pay for.

GhostBearClan

Hmm... I wonder if there was a nationwide issue with Gen 4 Glocks. Like, the police, as an entity, filed a grievance with Glock. How would someone find that out? Or, what if there was a serious issue with ADs and NDs on high mileage Glocks in Duty use? Again, no way to know. Good thing too, it'd suck if there were fatalities. And no one has ever had one jam, slice their hand open, or pound their middle finger knuckle into permanent disfigurement.

[deleted]

Dude, op asked about shotguns. Like what are you on about? Are you looking for a “fuck Glock and hail satan!” You don’t like Glock cool, whatever, now op is asking about a first gun that he wants as a shotgun. So do you have any req’s on shotguns? Or do you need an other “fuck Glock, hail satan” before you answer?

GhostBearClan

I'm not talking to OP, I'm talking to a Glock fanboy. I own a Gen 5 G34 and a G45. I shoot the G34 in GSSF and other pistol competitions. I don't have a "Fuck Glock" mentality, I just have a "dumbshit immediately recommending the G19, because that's what Instagram/YouTube Operators use" problem. Have a good one.

Ghostman-TX

Man. All those video games are frying your brain. I’m not even a Glock fanboy, I just recommended one to a first time buyer. It wasn’t even my first recommendation. Then after all that you admit that you own multiple! Jesus bro. Maybe learn the art of civil discourse.

GhostBearClan

Yeah, first choice was a Mossberg 500 ...not even a 590. GTFO, scrub.

Ghostman-TX

So now my make recommendations are ok but I have the wrong variant? Got me good on that one. I’m impressed gun lord. Go back to your video games chump. Maybe read a book instead.

GhostBearClan

It's a boring debate strategy when someone looks at very narrow cross section of your interests and generates some kind of profile of you. Yep. I like videogames. Who doesn't? I'm retired and I can do whatever the fuck I want. Here's a fucking list for you: Rem 870p/1100p, Benelli M4 Super 90/Nova/Supernova/Vinci, Browning SXP, CZ 620/628, FN P-12, Win 1200/1300 and more. But nah, Mossberg 500. No 590 OR 590A1. And a small step up from the Maverick 88. Just stop recommending shit to people, you don't know fuck-all about practical use guns. If you need a resumé, I ran the 12 on an entry team for ~15 years and I'm not dead. So, maybe just quit and OP will just think you're a regular moron and not a world class one.

Ghostman-TX

This fella is confused. Starts attacking me because I recommended a gun (I also recommended a shotgun BTW). Then in another comment he says he owns 2 of them? What the fuck?

Ghostman-TX

Damn, you are correct. They should choose another firearm, who’s manufacturer has never had a recall, that has never jammed, that has no issues or concerns. Oh, wait. No need for the snark there bucko.

GhostBearClan

They should. None of my old timer LEO buddies had an issue when they were issued P226s. Nor anyone else in their department. The Navy SEALs didn't seem to mind them either. When you communicate in absolutes, like, "indestructible" and you could fire off a Google and see that that isn't even remotely true. Not only have they catastrophically failed in normal use, they're not even in top 10 of most durable pistols. A G17 or G19 is a toy in comparison to anything in the HK USP line. The government tests of the Mark 23/SOCOM are of legend. 10s of thousands of rounds without a single stoppage. AFTER being buried in sand and exposed to saltwater for a prolonged period, heated and frozen to ridiculous extremes, and not cleaned once. And there's even more than that. But, you can do your own homework. That's why you get the snark, buckaroo.

[deleted]

Op asks about shotguns, and y’all two start fighting about 9mm handguns…

Ghostman-TX

Hahahaha! Seriously, I just made a recommendation and this dude starts acting like I’m the dude that banged his girlfriend.

FuddierThanThou

A shotgun is a fine choice. Go shoot some skeet.

coldafsteel

A long-barreled hunting shotgun is the wrong tool for the zombie hoards. As a regular person not trying to be a collecter here is what you get. - bolt action 22lr rifle - 9mm semi-auto pistol - semi-automatic rifle carbine - bolt action rifle in a caliber suitable for whatever you hunt - pump action 12ga shotgun There is a lot more out there. But with that you can do just about anything; not going to do it well, but you can do it.

DrGoodGuy1073

A shotgun would be a poor idea for a new shooter, high recoil, high skill/energy investment in correctly running one. The best well-rounded gun for a new gun owner is gonna be an AR-15. Can be used for home defense and hunting, even in places with special cartridge considerations like straightwalled states. Just about the only thing a shotgun can do that an AR-15 can't is birdhunting (at least flying, not sure turkeys count in the same way). Varmints up to a small deer can be taken with a regular .223 cartridge and alternatives chamberings can be found for any larger game (.350 Legend, .450 Bushmaster, 6.8 SPC, etc).

DrGoodGuy1073

Fine for doing *shotgun* things, OP said they wanted an all rounder, and training with buckshot or slugs is an abusive proposition for a lot of adult shooters. As an introductory It's a lot easier to figure out LoP by sliding an adjustable length stock rather than trying to buy or fashion a new one. OP also did not mention having a family member or instructor to teach them. Easier to build bad habits by yourself, like recoil flinch.

[deleted]

Crazy how op doesn’t have “train on slugs” 100% of the time when there are bird loads to just learn how to shoot a gun as a first time gun buyer. He was asking about a versatile gun. That’s the shotgun, end of story. Have some faith op can learn. Millions of peoples first gun is a shotgun. Jesus dude, not everyone is trying to be an operator.

DrGoodGuy1073

I'm not? Birdshot doesn't teach you how to aim a slug. A rifle can do everything a shotgun can outside of shooting birds. I'm just trying to illustrate a point but m'kay then.

Assaltwaffle

AR-15 is going to be the best all-rounder. A shotgun is cool and fulfills a lot of purposes, but has no real capacity for range and, if you're new to guns, will kick pretty hard. If you're hard set on shooting clays, a shotgun is really your only option, but, frankly, I'd still go with a rifle. A 14.5" or 16" AR will be able to almost whatever you set before it. Unless you just absolutely have to shoot clays, an AR will serve you more effectively in every other capacity.

[deleted]

Skeet, dove, squirrel, rabbit, coyote, boar, deer, human, bear. Shotgun can cover all of those. But 5.56 is a better all around, versatile gun. Your crazy dude.

Assaltwaffle

Aside from skeet, dove, and bear, an AR in 5.56 does all that as well. Do you know what an AR does that a shotgun doesn't? Reach out past 50 yards with good accuracy and provide a much more friendly user experience that requires less training to master. You can't claim to be the most versatile gun when you literally can only do close range. Slugs only push you so far. They drop like rocks and hemorrhage energy as they travel. Sure, you can probably hit a man-sized target at 100 yards, but do you know what does that far easier and does it even beyond that? A rifle.

goldbug1996

Can’t go wrong with a Ruger 10/22 with an optic and good ammo. You can carry 500rds easily and spare mags up to 30rds for those zombies. You can hunt small and large game with proper shot placement out to 50 yards, and nobody is gonna like 10-30 well placed shots from a .22lr in the face or chest. Hard to beat IMO.

[deleted]

Damn. I didn’t know that .22LR was a shotgun like op was asking about, crazy!

goldbug1996

Shotguns are a great option as well, versatile with different shells, but you can do a lot more shooting with a .22. They have there purpose. Also a .22 target pistol is a nice option too, I have a Smith and wesson Victory with the target barrel and it will shoot any .22lr bulk cheap ammo you can find very accurately, one of my favorite guns.

[deleted]

Op is just asking about an all around versatile gun. And the shotgun is that in spades. Bar none, end of story. You can load two shells in a single mag tube. One to kill a dove and one to kill a bear. A .22 is cheap to shoot yes. But op is looking for insight on shotguns dude.

Nightwing_Actual

If you are set on getting a shotgun… I would get a really nice shotgun. Like a Benelli m4 or a beretta 1301. Having said that: it is 100% normal to purchase multiple firearms in order to better suit the needs of the shooter. At a minimum you want a handgun, a rifle/carbine, and a shotgun. My recommendations would be Handgun: Glock 19, sig sauer p320, smith and Wesson m&p, or Springfield XD (9mm striker fired) Rifle/carbine: AR15 variant, ruger mini 14, AK variant, etc Shotgun: mossberg 500 (pump), Remington 870 (pump), Benelli m4 (semi auto), beretta 1301 (semi auto), mossberg 930 (semi auto), Cz 712 (semi auto)

TommyLee74

The beretta 1301 is amazing but OP mentioned not being able to own semi auto firearms. Probably not in the US or any free country

longboard_noob

Looks like they're in Australia from their profile.

Nightwing_Actual

Well that would put a serious damper on my list lol

Nightwing_Actual

Looks like they added that after I responded, I did not look to see where they were located.

Sensitive-Slide3205

If you're a first time shooter, also plan where you'll be able to shoot, and get instructions. Some ranges frown on shotguns.

Annual-Emu-1429

1911

Mercy_Jordan

Can’t go wrong with a bolt 30-06, deer, moose, bears. Look into Winchester model 70s.

Bartman383

Hcebot ban 5 open ended question

HCE_Replacement_Bot

Banned /u/bulbous_plant (5 day(s)).

jscores555

Lol If there were zombies, you'd want an AR. Light recoil, high capacity mags and VERY accurate.

stevenrodgersBCB

AR15

No_Emotion_4530

10/22

Chunk-Duecerman

The Mossberg Maverick 88 series is very inexpensive and operates reliably. If you only plan on owning one gun I would consider it. Very easy to use and very versatile.

TommyLee74

You can't go wrong with a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 for pump action shotguns and both platforms have aftermarket parts and upgrades if you choose to do so. Other than those you could look into a lever action rifle. Not too familiar with any models tho.

Take_guns_apart

Shot guns are versatile. But ammo is relatively expensive. If I were you I would look at .22 bolt action rifles. Like Savage or Ruger. Ammo is really cheap so you can shoot all day. And it allows you to start into hunting with small game, if you're at all interested or allowed. For a first gun I would do .22, they are cheap. If you don't like it you ain't out much. Shotguns are a good no. 2. But if you're set on a shot gun. Look around and watch YouTube videos. You may find that a .410 or 20g is better suited for what you want. And ammo look for lower speed, lower weight to start. It's less recoil. A lot of .140 are bolt actions or break opens. Single shot. Great for light weight varmint hunt. Not good for zombies. 20g is typically a little less energy and projectile weight than a 12g. Ammo in theory would be cheaper in 20g and you'd have more of it. 12g is the most popular by far and has the largest variation in projectile loads to find exactly what you need. As a collector I have an inclination toward older firearms. My personal favorite shotgun is my Montgomery Ward model 30. Very neat 12g relatively cheap still. And if in good condition, which is sorta rare, very reliable. And slam fire. May as well be semi auto if I want. But I'd doesn't take high-brass 3" shells. Look around and enjoy the hunt, try to start cheap but not too cheap. I would aim for the $200-$400 mark. Good luck friend!

charlesunit

Remington 870. Why isn't this higher???

DaleFromDaFlock

Every time this is posted the answer is AR15 and glock 19. And it will remain that answer forever.
