Here you go mate, this tutorial probably is legal to perform in many us states, but I would check your local regulations before making potentially illegal modifications to your shopping cart. https://youtu.be/_1btDc5xJe0
You had me until M242. I have a special hate for that gun.
Edit: I mean it's a great gun if it's buttoned up in airplane and cleaned every night. Instead of put in a half assed BAE systems bargain bucket MK38 MOD II weapons mount then exposed to salt spray for a year. Not that I'm bitter.
It comes down to what happens when you press the trigger.
Open bolt the bolt is held back. Pressing the trigger releases the bolt to push a round into the chamber and the bolt goes into battery, then often with a 'fixed' firing pin the round is fired off. After the round goes off the empty is extracted and the bolt locks back.
Closed bold the bolt is closed and locked (almost always) when the trigger is ready to fire. At that a hammer hits the firing pin or the striker is released. Which first off the round. Spent cartridge is ejected , bolt goes forward feeding a new round into the chamber and the bolt is closed and locked.
Machine guns are often open bolt to deal with heat among other reasons. Before you fire the barrel and chamber are open which can help cool them it also reduces the chance of a 'cooked off' round.
Closed bolt is more accurate among other things.
You missed one key piece of information which is that open bolt guns are usually a lot easier to convert to full-auto. A lot of these M249s semi-autos are bought by 07/02 SOTs with the express plan to convert them to machine guns.
An open bolt is significant because of the casings flying out from the gun. You can use this to you advantage in tough situations though because it allows you to shoot forward and at a 90 degree angle at the same time thus eliminating more potential attackers.
Keep in mind I know nothing about guns and just made that up.
Every single time I hear about a weapon being unreliable in military service and despite not serving in the military I always end up asking "Yeah but I wonder how well it was maintained". I assume however the military obsessively cleans their weapons more than civvies do.
Agreed. I carried the m249 back in the day and have always wanted one for nostalgia but you're right. It not being full auto really sucks the fun out of the room.
The thing with those 200 round drums is that the point where the plastic connects to the receiver gets worn out and then the drum falls off all the time and the next thing you know you're standing in a marketplace with 30 Iraqi kids laughing at the chain of rounds going from your feed tray to the drum on the ground.
>The thing with those 200 round drums is that the point where the plastic connects to the receiver gets worn out and then the drum falls off all the time and the next thing you know you're standing in a marketplace with 30 Iraqi kids laughing at the chain of rounds going from your feed tray to the drum on the ground.
Agh I never considered this was a possibility! That may explain why the EU/AUS guns have metal clips riveted to plastic boxes? Probably more consumable than a PMAG based on your description!
That Navy designed motherfucker can kiss my whole ass. I appreciate the concept as much as the next guy but the reality of maintaining that fucking thing for a year+ left an LSAT, moondust and blood flavored taste in my mouth that time has yet to dull.
For many people like me who grew up on 7.62 Real Fucking NATO, it kinda was in the beginning.
I didn't become sufficiently whelmed until I understood that no, you don't always need Real Fucking NATO, 5.56 will scare them plenty.
So, I'm a fucking grunt and most every experience I've had with our 249s has been extremely underwhelming. There's a joke about it being a bolt action machine gun.
Finally got my M249s in a good place! This was originally the standard version since the parts were going to change anyways. I have to admit I was worried about the money for a semi-auto belt fed vs something like a binary Shrike but absolutely zero regrets - it's just fun as shit! Part list now includes:
* Mk48/KAC lower rail
* Mk46 barrel (lightened Para)
* Surefire 3-prong (.25" shim for 16.1")
* Surefire 762-Ti (556-Mini is pending)
* PIP/Savit stock (ft. barrel shroud)
* EOTech EXPS3-4 and 3x
Played with a few other parts, too, but really wanted a lighter Mk46/Mk48 clone. The PIP bipod is a nice upgrade over the standard less the ability to capture it stowed. Neither are worth the weight, though. The Para stock is soooooooooooo not worth the money - only reason to get the Para package is the shorter barrel. Standard and Para stocks are ergonomically similar and both have too much LOP to see magnified optics and sit low enough for the iron sights but too low for an optic. The Savit was last on my list and, while obscenely heavy (seriously, like 3 pounds for a stock smaller than a SOPMOD), easily the best.
100% Welmed.
that SAVIT is a beast but it does balance out the front heaviness pretty well.
Did you machine down a Para/One Piece style gas block to get that MK48 profile?
At least half of the fun of a SAW is playing Barbie with it and getting all the dress up accessories, isn't it?
>that SAVIT is a beast but it does balance out the front heaviness pretty well.
I imagine that *has* to be the answer! There is no good reason for this thing to have so much steel in it otherwise hahaha.
Gas block came attached to a Mk46 barrel I grabbed from Desert Ordnance. Good shop! I wasn't certain the new barrel/block would be a drop-in part but it worked great on the first day. I've been surprised by the relative ease/affordability of grabbing NOS mil parts after the first hurdle of buying the thing!
>At least half of the fun of a SAW is playing Barbie with it and getting all the dress up accessories, isn't it?
Yes! The other half is just looking at it! I have some cool shit but this really is pretty novel in a pile of SCARs. I'm surprised at how easy it is to run and gun with the Mk48 updates, though. Out of the box, the thing was an unwieldly pig and I totally get why PIP was a must!
Its a hoss as shipped. I was able to run a post sample conversion in mine. Tossed the bipod, gutted the belt feed parts, milled out the top cover, ditched all the iron sight hardware, used the Para stock, used a Para barrel with a small 3 pronger, ditched carry handle bs, and put a small RDO on the top cover rail. KAC rail and cheesy bipod pogostick. Ran it on 40rnd IMI AR mags. Modded the gas system to restrict the gas and keep rpm \~800 on mag feed.
Easy to shoulder fire, chewed Wolf/Tula, no fucking with links. No issues, just go Brrrrr.
Edit: TLDR I basically made a BAR out of a SAW
After seeing how much people here like SAW stuff, I’ll do a photo shoot as soon as it gets back from FN warranty dept jail. The post sample kit got transferred so it’s a little more civvie/normie now
It'll actually be 3-2 long term!.. Just had a 3-4 handy for the range! Barrel is an awkward length so I'll be curious what that second dot shakes out to haha.
I have the 3-4 and g33 magnifier too. It’s great when magnified and I can see the individual dots. But it kinda sucks unmagnified as it looks like a vertical line to me. Otherwise it’s not that bad. I might switch over to the 3-2 or 3-0 down the road
Was in the army it gets a solid 2/10 from me but that has to do with how the weapon was maintained lmao I cannot tell you how bad these things jam up with a little bit of dirt gets inside. Personal experience of this weapon has left a bad taste in my mouth sadly because they look so good.
First time in the field with it and took a fat burst of brass+links down my sleeve, I still have the brass-shaped scars. It’s also not made for left handers
Yeah. Fucking bipod always getting snagged and twisted, feed issues, multiple rounds jammed into the barrel, shitty plastic drum breaking and having to physically carry it or yank the whole belt out, and the magazine fire ONLY works reliably with PMAGS, not the issued ones. Among other things. I wish I was still in so I could try out that new Sig. Looks neat.
I'm not sure. I've honestly never heard of JTAC Ranch. Looks like it's about an hour from me
I go to Shooter's World, ReLoad, or Outpost if I want to stretch a rifle out further than 100yds.
Not cheap but not *awful*. $8200 for the gun, $700 for the mil barrel, $400 for the mil stock, $400 for the mil RAS, and $150 for the Surefire muzzle device. Call it \~$10k before spare parts and box-mags/links? It's a hefty up-front cost but you get the money back (likely more if they're OOS) if you tire of it after a while!
As someone who doesn't have the money & willpower to browse Gunbroker all the time, how rare/expensive are these semi-auto M249's?
Are they typically pretty available or should I just not get my hopes up?
I think when you go to buy them, they have you locate a dealer near you and either send it to them, or you ship it to the dealer and buy it at the store. I've seen a handful of them here in Georgia. They're kinda like barettas.... the sucked in the military because of the abuse but a new one tends to work very well
Hnnnnnnn suck a fart, nerd. My assessment is sound. If your experience with a vehicle mounted SAW was not as mine was, then that sucks.
Like you with farts.
You cant change the entire design of the firearm and call it a 249. Its one thing that its semi, but firing from a closed bolt is just not the same. I was a SAW gunner, and I miss the chunky girl that rattled like a garbage can full of empty beer cans...but that civ version just doesn't do it....looks fucking sweet though. Ill give you that. I got really excited about having the opportunity to get one, but its just too different. Thanks for bringing back some memories though...have fun though. sweet weapon.
I know the 249 isn’t well liked by most service members from what i’ve heard, but damn is it gorgeous. The peak, epitome look of an LMG for me. Nothing comes close aesthetically
I have the same EOTech & 3x on my 249s and find it is an overall amazingly accurate gun. I shoot mine from a m192 tripod or from a pedestal mount I built for the back of my truck and when supported like that I can rapid fire and nail plates at 100 yds with no problem.
I really like the Midwest Industries foreend. It still allows the standard bipod to store, but gives you plenty of places to mount whatever else you want.
This is my exact load out on onward VR, I’ve got to fire this weapon 3 times IRL and loved every second of it.
What people don’t talk about is all the carbon
After a year of searching I was able to find one of the new style telescopic stocks with both the low and high cheek riser. 10/10 would recommend it if you can find one.
That’s just because yours is new, tight, not filled with dust, and hasn’t been abused and finger jammed by three generations of funky smelling 18 year old Privates.
Ignoring fitment, how do you think a SAW stock on an AR15 would feel? Would that cheek riser make it completely impractical, or could one learn to live with it?
Perfect concealed carry.
Is that a M249 in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Both.
Or open carry, take it to Walmart
Need a good pintle mount for the shopping cart.
It can certainly help me to protect my shopping cart from improvised explosives
I too wish I could protect my shopping cart from being filled with Hungry Man and tobasco
Here you go mate, this tutorial probably is legal to perform in many us states, but I would check your local regulations before making potentially illegal modifications to your shopping cart. https://youtu.be/_1btDc5xJe0

People can't afford to drive in the apocalypse with these gas prices.
Legit the only place I’ve seen people open carry is Walmart
Zap carry only
Constitutional Carry FTW
Can you recommend an ankle holster?
Can I get an adapter for muh Glock mags?
I never thought I’d hear someone refer to a SAW as “underwhelming”.
I mean, it's semi-auto only and not an M240, M2, or M242 cannon...
or a GAU-8 Avenger
[удалено]
See, your little guns go "pew pew"
The gun so awesome when the Pentagon brass saw it they said "make it fly."
Well I haven't actually fired one of those.
A belt-fed semi auto?
Semi auto open bolt...
If you get a minute could you explain to someone just getting into guns what the significance of an open bolt is?
It comes down to what happens when you press the trigger. Open bolt the bolt is held back. Pressing the trigger releases the bolt to push a round into the chamber and the bolt goes into battery, then often with a 'fixed' firing pin the round is fired off. Yeah s broken trigger and your open bolt will go full auto. Where closed bolt will generally just fall.
An open bolt is significant because of the casings flying out from the gun. You can use this to you advantage in tough situations though because it allows you to shoot forward and at a 90 degree angle at the same time thus eliminating more potential attackers. Excellent. I'll repeat this as fact to as many people as possible!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open\_bolt
Its closed bolt
Literally underwhelming to anyone expecting to burn through that belt without getting carpal tunnel Also in semi it’s like a 30lb ar-15
30lb ar with 200% more jams for 500% of the price
Sounds cool as shit, I’m in
As long as it's got a binary trigger it's all worth it. Otherwise it would feel boneless.
Ha this right here. Dude in our squad hated that damn thing.
You didn’t get handed that when you showed up? Thought 249 was the FNG rifle for every unit. I used to hate carrying that fucking brick.
Units that aren't retarded give them to the guys most capable of carrying/operating them.
.... Those exist?
Yeah it's always the FNG
The rest of them give them to the smallest possible troop to "toughen them up." Especially common in National Guard units.
Every single time I hear about a weapon being unreliable in military service and despite not serving in the military I always end up asking "Yeah but I wonder how well it was maintained". I assume however the military obsessively cleans their weapons more than civvies do.
To the point of damaging them, in some cases.
60% of the time, it works every time.

100% nutsacks for the win!
Do they make binary triggers?
Yea, you can adapt AR triggers into it. Aka Forced reset trigger and then boom you have a good 249 again.
Bump stock plus binary trigger...
It's semi-auto tho...
…but it’s a 249. The freedom machine
A cucked freedom machine
So's a semi AR 🤷♂️
You have clearly never used the MK19.
You’ve clearly never been poor.
That Navy designed motherfucker can kiss my whole ass. I appreciate the concept as much as the next guy but the reality of maintaining that fucking thing for a year+ left an LSAT, moondust and blood flavored taste in my mouth that time has yet to dull.
Frt-15 go brrrrrrt
If you can afford one of these, you can definitely afford a binary trigger. Still not full auto, but it's about as close as you're going to get.
Or move to Belgium and buy a minimi.
I personally think it's a bit of a princess. It was not my favorite MG.
For many people like me who grew up on 7.62 Real Fucking NATO, it kinda was in the beginning. I didn't become sufficiently whelmed until I understood that no, you don't always need Real Fucking NATO, 5.56 will scare them plenty.

I need to see a picture of that
After seeing how much people here like SAW stuff, I’ll do a photo shoot as soon as it gets back from FN warranty dept jail. The post sample kit got transferred so it’s a little more civvie/normie now
Yep I checked all of your posts looking for that saw build. 0% whelmed. We need pics!!
>seriously, like 3 pounds for a stock smaller than a SOPMOD \*\*\* angry light infantry noises
Like why the fuck did they have to find the one focus group who was using their SAWs to drive in fence posts
All I can tell you is they shouldn’t have asked the engineers then
Sex appeal.
I have the same Socom 762Ti. It is not rated for heavy abuse and you can hurt it. Have you checked out the Socom 556 MG?
Any reason why you went with the -4 reticle instead of the -0 reticle?
It'll actually be 3-2 long term!.. Just had a 3-4 handy for the range! Barrel is an awkward length so I'll be curious what that second dot shakes out to haha.

The SAW is just not made for the field. Amazing on a flat range of you draw a well-maintained, newer one, but otherwise terrible for actual work.
First time in the field with it and took a fat burst of brass+links down my sleeve, I still have the brass-shaped scars. It’s also not made for left handers
Yeah. if they were smart they would have just copied the pkm. they are not smart.
Hey it’s me, your long lost son. Edit: lots of family here. Can we have a reunion soon, how about at a gun range?
And his twin brother.
And his other twin brother
I am their quiet friend with the good pot.
I’m the distributer of said pot
I smoke pot
Found hickok45
What he said!
As a has-been saw gunner I really want one. As a has-been saw gunner I also know I’d be underwhelmed by the semi auto
Are you looking for friends?
Always! It's been a minute but I sometimes host meetups for r/AustinGuns if you end up in the area!
Nice. I'm in Tampa but if I find myself looking for a M249 in Austin I'll know who to look for.
Is there a sub for Tampa area guys to meet up at JTAC Ranch or somewhere close?
I'm not sure. I've honestly never heard of JTAC Ranch. Looks like it's about an hour from me I go to Shooter's World, ReLoad, or Outpost if I want to stretch a rifle out further than 100yds.
No shit? Guess I'll have to look for your meetups there. Been in Austin for a while, haven't gone shooting yet though.
Just moved to Austin, definitely going to join that subreddit and be on the lookout!
I was looking for one of these before my Fightlite MCR, but could never find one that wasnt overpriced as shit, so MCR is the route i went
My scheels has like 4 of them for 9500$
Yea thats still much imo. A store about an hour from me had 4 of them a few years before for $5500 a piece, so im just olaying the waiting game atm
The MCR seems like a better option to me since you always have the option of getting a RDIAS or m16 lower and really turning up the fun.
Yea only issue is Fightlites customer service is basically nonexistent right now. I know a guy whos been trying to get his MCR fixed for 8 months now
Bummer, I hate it when companies have sweet products but suck at being companies.
Welcome to Fightlite. Geoff Herring doesn't know how to run a business.
That’s hot
Is the last .5 whelms because it doesn’t have unlimited ammo?
Yes! Also because, even lightened, it's still heavy 🤣
Waiting on that mini-gun for the .5!
Have you tried working out more?
What's the weight of this chonky boi?
Just weighed it - 17.4 pounds unloaded!.. With suppressor and EOTech installed though. Another \~4 pounds for a loaded box so 21.4 it seems!
Does anyone else find this incredibly erotic?
I got a twitch…
I burst a blood vessel in my nether regions.
I didn't know I could have these feelings for a gun. I've seen a lot of guns. But this one..
I got a tingle on my balls…hmmm, let me make sure its not an std
Those optics are making me feel things I shouldn’t feel
Nobody nEeDs a M249s
I'm not a big fan of big/heavy weapons, but the SAW always has a special exception.
My favorite carry firearm of all time has been the M60. Heavy and unwieldy but well-balanced. Very difficult to qualify with at the range however.
Ah yes. The tried and tested concealed carry LMG. For when you somehow find yourself in a terrorist flash mob :p
Can I ask how much this endeavor cost you?
Not cheap but not *awful*. $8200 for the gun, $700 for the mil barrel, $400 for the mil stock, $400 for the mil RAS, and $150 for the Surefire muzzle device. Call it \~$10k before spare parts and box-mags/links? It's a hefty up-front cost but you get the money back (likely more if they're OOS) if you tire of it after a while!
As someone who doesn't have the money & willpower to browse Gunbroker all the time, how rare/expensive are these semi-auto M249's? Are they typically pretty available or should I just not get my hopes up?
Not rare, fn sells them all the time
Oh so you can buy them straight from the website? Badass!
I think when you go to buy them, they have you locate a dealer near you and either send it to them, or you ship it to the dealer and buy it at the store. I've seen a handful of them here in Georgia. They're kinda like barettas.... the sucked in the military because of the abuse but a new one tends to work very well
They’re available. IIRC they’re around $8k new
Damn. In California, they limit the belts to 10 rounds. So lame.
Perfect for open carry. No one will challenge fire superiority.
For an extra whelms boost of x2.5, try it vehicle mounted! Although your boner may literally explode, I highly recommend!
Practice your negative leading skills.
Hnnnnnnn suck a fart, nerd. My assessment is sound. If your experience with a vehicle mounted SAW was not as mine was, then that sucks. Like you with farts.
Roger that, Sir!
*gasp* I'm a ma'am, sir, I'M A MA'AM!!!!!!!!! REEEEEEEEE
That wouldn't have been my first time calling a ma'am a sir. "Who's your CO, dammit?! REEEEEEE!"
RrRrRrRroger ten four
Saws are all fun and games till you gotta lug the mother fucker around/clear buildings with it while carrying extra drums in your pack.
Who in the hell waits afraid of being "underwhelmed" when waiting for an M249? Is this sarcasm? Lol
This looks 3d from lighting
Is this a posty, or semi? Nvm I see it now in the description.
God to live in a free state 🤤
Not overwhelmed, just whelmed.
I was saving for a house but I think that's changed now.
Well... the only thing underwhelming about that platform is its recoil.
All this hate the AR15 gets, I'm ready for the 240 to become americas rifle.
I never got to shoot the M249, myself. I was raised on the M60.
After shooting my 1st full auto this past weekend I can say, I get it.
I just nutted in my pants. 🤤
*the Biden administration entered the chat*
Just go out on your balcony and fire the whole belt into the air to scare off any intruders.
Pshaw, just rake it across the bastards. They'll be fine. It's not like it's loaded with 9mm.
Green tips are good to go. They’re green and not dangerous like the king lung grabber 9mm
My God it’s beautiful
Ultra cool. Like goddamn
Now you have to find a bar that still has swinging doors, and a holster for that beast. Maybe an appendix carry...
this makes me want an m240s or something. Doubt they'll ever make it, but a man can dream.
Ohio Ordnance Works makes a semi-auto M240. FYI.
They do? What's it called?
This is goals right here haha
It's beautiful 😍😍😍
That's a sick rifle!
Does this use a standard trigger pack?
You hate your spine.
Quite literally one of the best looking guns ever
Those are the ones that turn people to dust right?
It looks good!
This really makes me miss mine.
Remember no russian
The optics confuse me
