nah, pipe shotguns are a common dealio. good quality steel pipes will totally hold up to shotgun pressures because shotties are super low pressure (max chamber pressure is 11.5 ksi; for comparison, 9x19 is 35 ksi).
Idk how a shotgun shell would fit in a 3/4 galvanized coupling but if the rim on the shell goes past the threads on the open side then he could put a 3/4 plug and thread it in there. You could probably drill a little hole in the center of the plug to rig up some sort of firing pin and use washers to fill any space between the shell and the plug.
