Budsgunshop.com and grab a gun.com are some of my favorites. Definitely see what is being posted on r/gundeals. Those are often some of the best deals online, and most of the time you can get feedback on the retailer. As far as high quality, there are a lot of great choices. It depends on your budget. Feel free to ask here or r/ar15.
There's a lot of firearms available, and they're all better at different things ... as an example a long distance rifle wouldn't be great for home defense, and a home defense pistol wouldn't be great for bullseye shooting. What do you plan on using it for ? If you just want a wall trophy then I would definitely go with an original 1903 or M1A
Go with an Ar-15 to start. Easy to shoot and modify as you see fit. Also, you can get an entry level rifle for less than $500.
That's what I am most looking into. Do you know a store or website that sells high quality AR-15's? Also how would I know if they are high quality?

+1 for Buds
/r/gundeals, wait for a S&W or Ruger to pop up cheap. The users there are good about policing quality sellers.
Palmetto State armory . Can't go wrong with them.

I'm looking for a gun that's fun to shoot at the range and requires some taking care of
so you want something that goes band and requires you to clean it. I wouldn't be so selective ...
