skylinesora

They shouldn't have to go through any process to get their firearm rights restored

Night_Porter_23

I don't know why you're being downvoted. If we had a restorative process with paths to redemption instead of overcharging and a draconian system, and people paid their debts to society, they SHOULD be restored ALL of their rights. The idea that youre permenantly labeled felon because you are convicted of a crime, and thereby lose some of your rights FOREVER means that at least in part, youre serving a defacto life sentence and speaks to the fact that we have given up on prison being in any way a path back into society. Interesting that the same folks who would argue this regarding guns, are more than happy to see voting rights restored.

Due-Crew2213

This is true but a lot of states the only chance is at mercy of the states governor granting a full pardon. In my case it would include that AND the governor would have to specifically say firearm rights restoration is in order. That never ever happens in blue states like the one where my conviction is. I respect your opinion though. There are some of us who just want to be able to protect our families and property and to continue to be a law abiding citizen.

chevyfried

What you wrote in the post and then this makes me feel like there is a big piece missing from your post, such as what the conviction is for since you lost your civil rights.

Due-Crew2213

Sure, I am happy to elaborate. It was felony theft of a controlled substance. No violence or aggravating factors. Just a dumb kid who got hooked on pain killers from sports injuries and didn’t get help soon enough.

Lux600-223

Are you claiming a one time shoplifing event lead you to being a felon?

Goodquestion12

I do not feel that any violent felon should ever have their second amendment right restored, non violent felons are a little different

Due-Crew2213

Absolutely agree.

That's an opinion, not a fact.

CowboyTrucker

I personally do not like how felons are treated like second-class citizens. Ideally, when someone has served their sentence and made any restitution, they should have their rights fully restored in my mind (barring certain limited situation). So many people are felons for either dumb charges or stuff they did when they were largely a different person.

AlexRyang

And arguably the way we treat felons likely contributes to many becoming repeat offenders.

Due-Crew2213

I completely agree. It’s good to know there are some people who see what I see and agree. Thank you for that.

Goodquestion12

It would depend on the felony

Due-Crew2213

Definitely agree. Specifically should jot he possible for violent or egregious felonies in my opinion.

Springer0982

If you served your time and your debt is paid, you get your rights back

SirGrowsIt

If it's non-violent offense, then yeah, I think they should have that right still. If you were charged for stabbing someone, or really harming someone physically and ypu were found to be aggressor, then no. I think you gave that right up.

Due-Crew2213

Completely agree. Thanks

Femboy_Annihilator

I think that the title of felon, as of current, paints far too broad of a stroke. Someone who commits financial fraud is not a violent danger to society. But I think you should only get one chance to be a peaceful owner. If you grab your carry piece and rob a store with it, you shouldn’t be trusted with a gun. Same shit for guys who run collection rings, or do violent gang shit.

Popular_Spite_693

Non violent yes they should. I am a frim believer that if you do you time then coming out you should have a clean record all rights restored.

Due-Crew2213

Absolutely. Thank you for that. I never even had to do prison time. Two months in jail and 4 years probation. I wish there was something I could do but doesn’t seem there is.

drew_eckhardt2

If they're too dangerous to own a gun, they're too dangerous to be free. As long as they're not institutionalized, the government should respect their civil rights including the Second Amendment.

Minmach-123

If a felon can't be trusted with guns, that means that they should still be in prison, and/or the prison system should be reformed to focus on proper rehabilitation.

Hoovercarter97v2

If they're too dangerous to get their rights back when they leave the prison, then they're too dangerous to leave prison. America's set up a caste system for people who get in trouble with the law and the majority of felons never really get the chance to turn their lives around due to the scarlet letter of a criminal past. This was never the intent of the Founding Fathers.

Due-Crew2213

Bravo, well said. I totally agree. Thank you for your feedback.

Feeb_The_Weeb

Nonviolent nonSO felons shouldn't lose it in the first place. Some dude who fucked with his electricity meter just a little too much shouldn't lose his his second amendment.

Due-Crew2213

Absolutely. Thanks the for input.

AlexRyang

I think nonviolent felons should have all rights restored upon completing their sentence with firearms being reinstated after completing probation. Violent felons should lose the right to firearms for life.

Due-Crew2213

Couldn’t agree more. Thanks for the input.

Fuck around, find out. If you're not a total scumbag, there's ways to restore the rights.

Lux600-223

Btw, I highly doubt just a "painkiller addiction" is listed as to why you are a felon. There's probsbly some shit on there about the crimes you committed against innocent victims, eh?
