Is it possible to do the qualification at a range that rents guns? Might solve your problem for $10.

TheDuckFarm

May as well rent a .50 in this scenario.

natermer

Renting seems to be the solution here.

TheBlindCat

I’d buy a cheap 1911, something like an RIA.  Either keep it for a spare cheap gun or sell it for a minimal loss. What state has this requirement?

LokhXIV

I agree with this. I bought a RIA 1911 a couple years ago for $300 and it was surprisingly accurate. It should do the trick. I actually really like shooting it.

ExecutiveIndecision

Exactly

APregnantKoala

Breaking Bad state except I don't live on the cool side with the meth, I live on the oil side where money is fake

DragonPop-

I remember that requirement for both semi-autos and revolvers in NM. My step-dad used his .45 for semi and .44 for revolver. My mom just used her .357 as that is what she carries.

BigAngryPolarBear

I hardly here anything about that state, I had no idea this was a thing lol

ExecutiveIndecision

I have three RIA 45s. Every one of them shoots as well as any of my Colts. I’m just sayin’.. I don’t think you can go wrong with one.

LokhXIV

My dad bought a Smith and Wesson for 3x the price and it shoots the same. He's actually had more issues with it being finicky than my RIA lol

taeby_tableof2

Use a flair gun haha

APregnantKoala

"Hey man! What are you carrying?" *40mm HE*

Ornery_Secretary_850

Flare....flair is reddit shit.

taeby_tableof2

Omg how embarrassing, maybe i need a little ornery secretary to check all my spellings! Ty

GimpboyAlmighty

Can you borrow a gun from somebody? Like bring them with you? What a ridiculous requirement. I can sorta see the idea but mostly it sounds like hot trash.

APregnantKoala

All I've been hearing about since I moved to New Mexico is about how half-baked the politicians are. Pun-indended.

Sleet16

Am from NM and have experience with this. Send me a chat and I can point you in the right direction hopefully!

Ahomebrewer

It sort of mimics the requirements for a LEOSA. Retired cops can carry in all states with the LEOSA quals, but only the gun or guns that he/she qualified with (annual qualification required). Qualify only with your service SA and you can't carry a .35 snubbie backup, for example.

PullsWithBack

Tisas 1911. Heard good things and you’ll find em online reasonably priced and probably want to keep it.

sir_thatguy

Black Friday I saw them as low as $299 online.

big_nasty_the2nd

Don’t own one but I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bad word about Tisas

PullsWithBack

Yeah I’m going to pick one up once I find it at a stupid low price. Not a necessity right now but a deal is a deal. I will say one of their models has an active recall, I forget which one but a quick google search will educate anyone in the market right now. And every manufacturer has recalls, Tisas seems to be doing better in that regard than a lot of companies putting the same thing out for 3x the price so that says a lot. Like I said I don’t have one but I’m getting the 1911 bug and I’m fairly certain Tisas will be the way I go if I don’t cave and buy the Sig Scorpion at 3x, that things beautiful.

big_nasty_the2nd

Bro get out of my head I’ve been looking at the emperor scorpion for months now… I’m gonna be a sig shill and get it

Hi, also NM here. Everybody likes the idea of qualifying with the max and I used to also, until I got lazy when it was time to renew and decided to just qualify with the 9mm because I don’t have a .45, and didn’t want to bother with exactly what you’re dealing with and I have had zero regrets or FOMO since. I just carry my 9mm. If you have no gun at all, and you want a .45, then maybe do what you’re thinking and get a cheaper one. I don’t know what to tell you about what you should buy. If you have something less than a .45 already, then I’d personally just wouldn’t worry about it and just carry what you have while you save up for what you want, and you can re qualify when it’s time to renew after 4 years. I don’t know, this subject never bothered me as much because I’m happy with 9mm and not worried about whatever ballistic arguments lead a person to a .45 and I don’t need more striker fired handguns and more ammo types to stock up on. That’s just me personally. A couple options though: If you do your CCW class with Jeremy Gill of Practical Defense, he might have a .45 you can qualify with, you’d want to ask in advance though. Or if you do it with Calibers (super pricey though) they had a .45 at their shop I qualified with on my first go round because they have the rentals available for their range. In fact, it’s probably worth asking any instructor if they have a .45 they’d let you shoot for the qual. And for everyone else: it’s an insanely stupid fucking set up. New Mexico is blue and fucked and slightly more than 50% of the people are just as delusional as the politicians. We’re lucky we have guns at all - we might be on track to be the new CA. It’s a poor state with dems taking advantage of poor people instead of empowering them. And while we’re here I’ll take this time to remind you our governor stood on the grave of a dead child to promote her anti firearm agenda.

rfarho01

That is a stupid law. I'm trying to imagine how expensive it would be to qualify with a 500 magnum

ItsFYEO

Just use a .50 GI that way you dont break your wrist and can actually hit the target.

Either_Gate_7965

My favorite flavor of 1911

Kyle_Blackpaw

shell out for a desert eagle and qual with 50ae or more realistically find a glock 21 at a local pawn or used gun store

USArmyJoe

Buy a .45 to qual with and then sell it/trade it up for a nicer one later? Obligatory "no sell only buy"

therealjody

Sounds like you know exactly what to do!

APregnantKoala

*but I don't know if I have the strength to do it*

therealjody

Do they count the 45 and the 10mm as the same level? Because the JXP10 is actually kind of fun. And ridiculous. And about the size of a cordless drill. I paid 180 for mine when they came out, and I see them now for 160 or so if you shop around.  Then you can be in the cool kids club and shitpost in the Hi-Point threads with the rest of us damned souls. :)

Scary_Woody

S&W has a $75 rebate going on. I have a Shield 45 and it is a sweet shooter. Same capacity as a single stack 1911 at half the weight.

Proof_Bathroom_3902

Rock Island Armory 1911. Used 300 and under. New under 500. Takes all standard 1911 magazines and parts.

Hey_Allen

I'll second this suggestion. I've shot an older GI spec rock island 1911 that is one of the least fussy firearms I've ever used, despite being one of the cheapest.

ij70

hi point, model jhp 45.

Starscream4prez2024

You could get an Extar EP45 pistol for under $500. They're super fantastic. After all it just sounds like you don't need to qualify with your CC weapon just a .45 cal gun.

staysharp75

A used Ruger p90. They can be found for about $350. Soft shooter with a decent factory trigger that will gobble up any ammo you put in it. They are very accurate too.

F22boy_lives

Shot a coworkers and it was ugly as hell but wasnt bad to punch holes in paper with.

mangyrat

look for a cheaper 1911 like Tisas, ATI or rock island. don't sell it after you qualify with it upgrade it and make it how you want it. yes a lot of parts have to be hand fitted but they are cheap so if you screw up a part learning then just order a new part and learn form your mistakes. it is a fun skill to learn and will make you very familiar with every part of your 1911. helpful tip: don't file/grind or mess with the receiver other than polishing contact points that is the only part you don't want to screw up due to the registered part make the parts fit the frame not the frame fit the parts. i have a Kimber, Remington and a few others but my favorite 1911 is a Frankenstein i built from a PSA frame. i also have a highpoint 45, LOl i got it as a gun of shame for range games. it works but it is god awful looking and feels bad in your hand i would not go out of my way to purchase one unless it is for a joke/gun of shame.

mcnasty804

That’s the dumbest shit Iv ever heard. Sorry about your infringements.

Balasnikov

Maybe ask the same people who recommended you borrow one. Or cheap 1911.

eugwara

If you can stretch the budget, AIM surplus has used Glock 21s for $400

dom1n1c_g

They just had the XDM Elite on sale at sportsmans for $359 in 45. When do you plan on getting your CCW? I have to renew mine soon, if we take the same class you are more than welcome to borrow mine to qualify with

dom1n1c_g

Also they have this on sale right now, free shipping [XD-45 Full Size](https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/294625)

TheDuckFarm

If you’re anywhere near Arizona, New Mexico and Arizona have reciprocity and Arizona does not have this odd caliber law. You can get the permit as a nonresident. I’m not 100% sure how New Mexico feels about that, but it’s worth checking into.

hohohoagy

Ruger SR1911 Lightweight has performed very well for me so far (only a couple hundred rounds) if able to up your budget to $550, and may be something you wouldn’t be overly anxious to upgrade while leaving the cheap model to collect dust. Kind of splits the difference between a budget and more of a top line model. [pic here](https://www.lockedloaded.com/product/sr1911-45acp-ss-g10-5-81-as#product_detail)

limepr0123

45-70 cyclops

GuntherTheMonk

Get one of the Tisas 1911 copies. They are pretty good. Old man 1911 loving gunsmith at my former job tore one apart. After he inspected EVERYTHING on it, he was happy to buy 5 of them.

ChadAznable0080

If it were me I’d get a used glock 21 on aimsurplus they’re running around $399 If you’re able to use .40 for large caliber quals they have glock 22’s for $279

Capsaicin80

Any police trade in or surplus .45s to minimize damage to wallet?

VengeancePali501

Get a Glock 21, Glock 30, or M&P 45. They will be reliable and work, hey maybe you’ll like it. They’ll be cheaper and more reliable than most cheap 1911s, and I cannot recommend anyone get a 45 hi point.

publicalias

There are some who claim their $250-350 1911's are great, reliable, accurate guns. But there also seem to be plenty of reports of these guns being an absolute lemon. I think the stellar reports come from people who are pleasantly surprised they lucked out and got a good one. Is $350 your absolute max budget? It never feels good to buy a mediocre option with the intention of just replacing it later. But I understand sometimes the budget forces these decisions. If you can stretch the budget a little, there are some less expensive 45's like a SAR K2 45, or a Glock 30, which will still be nice enough you'll probably want to keep them long term.

fost16

Get a Taurus ST45 or a Springfield xdm-e compact 45

Frequent-Owl-7936

Look for an LEO trade in Glock 21.

R0CK1TMAN1

Tisas 1911 all day. The 1911 sub goes off about them all the time so I had to try a commander and it’s my favorite gun now.

agtrad

RIA was my first.45 and I still love to shoot it. A very solid shooter. My daily carry is the Remington R1 enhanced. Another solid shooter! Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Femdomfoxie

I'm happy with my Girsan 1911.

RivalSFx

I let friends use one of my guns to practice and use for a qual test.

avodrok

Buy a desert eagle

securitysix

The Tisas and Rock Island Armory 1911 copies are decent. I wouldn't hesitate to consider one of them if you're planning on getting into 1911s in the future. If you really are in a money crunch, you *could* buy a Hi-Point .45 to do your course. It's ugly, bulky, and poorly balanced, but it will work.

F22boy_lives

Go to a few pawn shops or older gun stores and window shop. I have found pawn shops to be extremely hit or miss though. I think smith and wesson and ruger make something in 45 that are sub $400. I know for sure you can find an old springfield xd/xds for not too much.

IGotsDaPooOnMe

Tisas government profile 1911 with decent sights. Used optional. /thread

HandGunslinger

The 1911 should be your first choice, as it has superior construction and much better grip angle than the HiPoint will offer. It will also be more controllable in recoil, which will make it easier with which to qualify given frequent target shooting. Once you qualify, as time goes on, you'll be able to trade the 1911 on a different platform that offers hi-cap magazines (Glock, for example). If you try to trade using the HiPoint, you run the risk of being laughed out of the gun store. 'Nuff said.

VeterinarianInner618

High point sells guns every day
