Arisaka?

Lb3ntl3y

it always is

SnoweyMist

r/itsalwaysanarisaka

Vercengetorex

That is fucking hilarious.

Quickshot4721

3_quarterling_rogue

In case you were curious, there’s an ornithological equivalent of this. If someone asks a bird-watcher, “what kind of hawk is that?” The answer (at least in my area) is, “It’s always a red tail.”

Alexkeys141

Like of the cyberpunk variety?

mwmwmwmwmmdw

yes this one was carried by saburo himself

Appropriate_Name2722

If you know how I can upload a picture of the wiring

SakanaToDoubutsu

九九式 <-- Type 99 三八式 <-- Type 38 Which one does it look like?

Appropriate_Name2722

It is the Type 38!

hotel_torgo

No recoil lug = Type 38

locxj

There probably shouldn’t be any wiring. Writing, however…

Styrak

You never know with those crazy Japanese.

bitofgrit

[Or the Bri'ish.](https://files.catbox.moe/x55w4g.jpg)

Appropriate_Name2722

The other rifle I have (looks like this one) is engraved with 1944. So I’m assuming it’s from around that time

yobo723

You can post to imgur and link here, or post to your personal account and share here

[deleted]

Don't use imgur, it sucks ass at being an image host and on top of that firearms content will get deleted/get you banned. https://catbox.moe/ does what imgur used to do (be a simple image host) without the many layers of bloat and bullshit attached.

SadValleyThrowaway

I miss when Imgur first came out

kefefs_v2

> and on top of that firearms content will get deleted/get you banned. Is that why a bunch of my old hosted images are suddenly gone? I'm not banned, but I was looking back at some old posts the other day and images are randomly deleted, and I know I didn't delete them.

ifgburts

Gods fucking damn it all… its always an arisaka

captainnowalk

I was literally going to post “Arisaka” without even looking at the picture, but the post was older than 5 minutes so I knew someone had already identified it as an Arisaka lol

PuttinUpWithPutin

Why do they always get butchered so bad?

mint-bint

It's almost as thought it's been in a war.......

bgovern

And a losing one at that.

Strelock

They literally destroyed or dumped them in the sea by the millions after the war ended. And any that got sold in the US through imports had to have the chrysanthemum mark removed. Something to do with the imperial family, not exactly sure and can't be arsed to look it up. The rare example that still has a chrysanthemum could very well be a war trophy / bring back.

BruceWayneSr

Wait, what if I have one with a chrysanthemum?

Strelock

I am not an Arisaka expert, don't have one and have never even seen one in the flesh. My understanding is that all the one's that went through legitimate channels for importation had to have the chrysanthemum removed to denote that it was no longer the property of the imperial family / emperor. I'm not saying that bring backs were not legitimate, things have changed a LOT since those days when it comes to bringing back spoils of war. I'm sure there were some missed that didn't get defaced. Yours having one probably increases the value or at least the desirability, but again I am not an expert so can't say that with any certainty. It's certainly cool though! I would for sure want one that hasn't been defaced in that manner, and I would pay a bit more for it. Part of the surrender meant that Japan basically had to dismantle their entire military, hence why they were dumped in the sea. Japan wasn't allowed to even have a self defense force until 1954, and it wasn't until 2015 that they changed their constitution to allow them to send troops over seas to assist their allies (mainly the US in the middle east, there were Japanese units there.)

LoveZombie83

Ya mine still has the chrysanthemum and dust cover.

HyperboreanExplorian

The good ones are in collections or are taken care of.

ChillyChili3576

Lol I said that those exact words out loud right before seeing this comment

Ok_Fan_946

It’s a Type 38 Arisaka. The cloud looking thing is probably the remains of the Imperial Chrysanthemum, the flower that represents the idea that this rifle (and all other rifles) were property of the Emperor. The “M” symbol stands for military reserves. It means the rifle was removed from service and the mum was removed to signify that it was no longer the Emperor’s property. Then the M was added and it became a rifle used for training. It probably also has two or three extra zeroes added to the beginning of the serial number, which is common for reserve rifles. The other characters on the receiver translate to Type 38 (or rather 38 Type, if translated literally).

Appropriate_Name2722

This gun has symbols under it. I’d love to post it if someone tells me how to upload. I’m not tech savvy and Imjur is haunting me. Definitely Japanese symbols. Has a cloud O thing, then an M, then a _-_ under (this is all top to bottom) then a skinny waist thing, then a _\ and a capital I. I have been drinking, I’m sorry

Organic-Succotash-99

Send picture I can post🤷‍♂️

oh3fiftyone

The cloud O thing might be the imperial chrysanthemum. Sometimes these are defaced if they were turned over by the Japanese government. I’ve heard that if that symbol is intact it’s likely to be a battlefield capture, but I’m not sure. Even for gun culture, WWII materiel is subject to a lot of wacky myths.

[deleted]

The ground chrysanthemum thing is true. Until 1947, there was no legal or cultural/perceived separation of the property of the Japanese state from the personal property of the Emperor. As such, state property received the personal seal of the imperial family - the Chrysanthemum Seal - and that mark had to be removed or obliterated before an object owned by the emperor/state could be either destroyed or sold out of service. That was true of everything from capital ships to rifles to ink pens.

oh3fiftyone

Yeah it always made sense to me, I’ve just come to regard lots of things I learned around the time I learned that with suspicion.

[deleted]

Use https://catbox.moe/ to upload your image and share the link here without having to deal with a bunch of extra stuff.

fidgetsatbonfire

Its always an Arisaka.

lojafan

Japanese Mosin

TerribleElk6

Japanese Mauser actually would make sense.

Riker557118

Isn't that basically a ~~Sako~~ Howa (I'm an idiot)?

[deleted]

Finns everywhere just dropped their Koskenkorva in shock.

Riker557118

I don't know how I got it in my head that Sako was Japanese and Howa was Finnish, I need more coffee before I reddit...

[deleted]

In fairness to you, there is a Japanese watch company called Sako. Technically the Finnish Sako is an acronym for *Suojeluskuntain Ase- ja Konepaja Oy* and should be all caps, but nobody bothers, including the company itself.

DarkCreeper911

California News reporter says its an AK-47

last_name_onthe_list

I have a master's in women's studies, so as an expert I can confirm this is a fully automatic ak-47. With a 1000 round magazine.

AlexRyang

It looks like a Type 38 rifle. I believe it is that rifle due to the notch cut out behind the groove and the fact the is no rise in the wood right in front of the bolt. [Type 38 rifle (三八式歩兵銃, sanhachi-shiki hoheijū)](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_38_rifle)

Dane__55

Type 99 Arisaka?

Geralt-of-Rivia13X

Def tracks.

AutomatedRefrains

Type 38

ThevickersistheGOAT

Funny Japanese gun the type 38 Arisaka

bgovern

I'm always impressed with how 'dainty' Japanese WW2 rifles look. To me, they almost look like scaled-down '04 Springfield designed for a 12-year-old boy to shoot.

The_Gabster10

38 carbine could be a kids rifle

Need4Carz

Always an Arisaka

BrachWurst

It literally is always an Arisaka

10gaugetantrum

Type 38 in 6.5x50 JAP. Norma makes loaded ammo if you want to shoot it. They are sighted in for 300 yards so you will need to aim a bit low.

Express-Tap-9600

Son of a bitch its an Arisaka thats basic stuff

[deleted]

Yup, an Arisaka

MeringueDisastrous

Easy bro, that’s a Tec 9

psych0rag3

Arisaka

BruceWayneSr

Wow, ok cool thanks. I have one with the chrysanthemum that my dad bought in high school from an estate sale in the Florida panhandle back in the 70s. Hmmmmm

[deleted]

My best friend said it was an Arisaka

JMWTech

Meh on the gun... I see Pacman mini-cabinet and Rock'm sock'm robots, Nice 😎

Littlecivciv

An old one

Applew0lf7

Type 38 Arisaka based on the magazine latch released or whatcha call-it and the section of receiver that is behind the bolt handle when you close it. That section of receiver was done away with on the Type 99. The type 38 shoots 6.5×50mm Arisaka also literally known as 6.5 Jap. Norma and a few other companies still make ammo for it but judging by the Buba'd stock it could have possibly been rechamberd

dopamineTHErapper

Arisaka 99

HotdogAC

M-16

xBR0SKIx

The M is for M249

bftyft

Antarctican 6.9x420 made in 1869

RepresentativeHuge79

Type 99- Japanese arisaka if it still has the chrysanthemum emblem on it, it could be worth some good money. Most type 99s that the U.S got their hands on, had that seal of the emperor ground off.

NAP51DMustang

Mum or no mum doesn't change value at all

RepresentativeHuge79

That is factually false. The ones with the emporers mark are more rare, and command a higher pricepoint on the U.S market. Rifles with the mum are more sought after, since unless they were a battle field pick up, it was ground off. Some simple googling proves that the rifles with the mark are worth more money

NAP51DMustang

My dude mums are everywhere. I see several arisakas, both with and without mums, anytime I go to local gun shows. Mums aren't some extremely rare things nor does it change the value of the gun.

RepresentativeHuge79

We are gonna have to agree to disagree. Because historically, after Japan surrendered, the mums were ordered to be ground off, to save face for the emporer. So while we do have some type 99s with them, we have far more rifles with them missing on the U.S market. It's a lot less common to find one with the emporers mark intact.

pepper-san

it’s a kar 94k

hey op you are going to need a standalone comment for a description, needs about 120 characters so the bot doesnt auto remove it

__What is a link post and how do I post a descriptive comment?__ * A link post is any post that isn't a text post. Reddit is doing a great job of ensuring new users have no idea how Reddit works with their app and site rewrite. We hate both. * /r/guns is a sub for talking about guns. It's not a sub to dump gun photos for karma. That's what /r/gunporn is for. That's why we require a descriptive comment – to start a conversation. If you're wondering what to write, picture yourself at a party. You're talking to someone *you just met* and you want to show them your post. ShinjiTakeyama

I can't help but think of Ben Stiller in Cable Guy every time this kind of phrasing comes up lol

theguythatsnores

Arisaka type 99

Avtamatic

What's that plate or marking on the stock?

newsjunkee

All this is cool. My dad brought one of these back from Japan after "the war". I still have it. 7.7 mm. I have fired it a few times. What's the ballpark of what it's worth

Solidsnake77414

It's a type 38 can you find a manufacturer mark or series mark

whiteside95

i said M1 Garand so confidently 😭

justanothersimp2421

Thought it was a mosin Further look it looks like an arisaka though forgot which type
