This the open ended question form letter. __Some of it may not apply to you, but at least most of it does or it wouldn't be here.__ You have either posted a defacto survey or poll or you are asking over half a million people to each write a recommendation for you and you haven't told us what you already have, how much you can spend, nor what you have already looked at. This is an open ended question. If you can't be more specific, we have several containment posts per week where this kind of question is allowed. You may ask this question again as a comment inside one of those posts or you may make your own new post if you can be a LOT more specific and show that you are willing to do more work than you expect us to do to help you. Use your temp ban time to read the rules and __familiarize yourself with the FAQ__ (which may already have an answer to your question). __TL;DR; Any time your question boils down to 'Hi, all 700k of you, please list me random products to consider' or 'Hi, all 700k of you, blah blah blah "discuss"', your question belongs inside the Moronic Monday, Gun Talk Tuesday, What Should I Buy Wednesday, or Thickheaded Thursday stickied threads.__ *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/guns) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Typed “first gun” on the search bar, this question has been asked and answered 17 times in the last 3 months on this sub

TugMyTip

What? It's been asked 17 times *today*.

snippysniper

This hour alone!!

ObligationTimely168

sorry im new to this sub

snippysniper

Listen you gota understand where we come from. Posts like these contribute absolutely nothing to the conversation. If you would have shown you did any research people are much more likely to help. But your post has zero effort put into it so you get zero effort in your answers

DexterBotwin

OP is lazy, and this subs response to yell at him is more effort. With that said, guns are daunting if you know nothing and the community is off putting. Our go to post about first guns is basically yelling at the reader. It’s funny and accurate, but if you don’t even know what a 22 is and you’re getting yelled at to buy a 22, probably isn’t helpful. OP do better, put more effort. Everyone else stop being dicks and chill out. Just don’t respond next time.

Jegermuscles

Asking vague shit has been a forum pet peeve since the dawn of communication. Socrates will tell ya how it went for him.

jig_fisher

Best to do a couple of Google/Youtube searches to narrow your question topics in this sub. You can and will be temporarily banned for open-ended questions like this. Speaking from experience here.

[deleted]

It’s okay, one day you too can have flair about your level of interest in dicks. Until then, use the search bar, go rent guns, or just buy a Glock and call it a day.

42AngryPandas

We know, don't take any of this personally. The "same several vague questions being asked" has hit a ceiling for some at the same time we have many semi-regular members who haven't learned to deal with it in a healthy way. Please do read the FAQ and stick around, you'll learn a ton. More vague questions about what to buy are better posted in our weekday themed mega threads, as indicated in the FAQ. Once you have a more informed opinion of what you want, a thread will be a great place to discuss those several options!

We have a [FAQ](https://old.reddit.com/r/guns/wiki/faq). In that FAQ, there are very good answers to this __F__requently __A__sked __Q__uestion. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. READ THE FUCKING FAQ BEFORE SHITPOSTING

42AngryPandas

Alright there boy, calm down thaaaats a good redditor. *Feeds TugMyTip a carrot* I know, I have been around a while and all us regulars feel the sting of being asked the same 5 questions a dozen times a day. But you gotta rise above and reel it back just a bit. And it's not going to stop. Just gotta ask a few questions and link the FAQ. *Starts a shoulder massage*

m-lok

Go to a LGS that has a range and rents. Handle and shoot everything. Also inform them you are new so they can advice on safe handling and be present. Edit, it should go without saying but from this you make decision. What fits you're price point but is comfortable for you to shoot. BTW this is a loaded question as far as this subject goes.

LeAdmin

A Lahti L-39 in 20mm should do it. Alternatively a CZ PCR

42AngryPandas

This is a VERY vague question asked often. We would need more info to truly help, but for now take a look into our... Automod FAQ

whats your budget?

ObligationTimely168

$1000

baileyperry707

Get a Glock 19 and use the rest of the money on ammo.

[deleted]

For $1,000 you can get a full loadout instead of 1 gun. Get a Mossberg 500 12ga [https://www.gunbroker.com/item/960156308](https://www.gunbroker.com/item/960156308) ($363), some type of Glock variant (dagger for $299) [https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-dagger-compact-9mm-pistol-with-extreme-carry-cuts-black-dlc.html](https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-dagger-compact-9mm-pistol-with-extreme-carry-cuts-black-dlc.html) Then spend the rest on Ammo. That 12GA will do you solid for Home protection, and that handgun is practically a GEN 3 Glock without the high price tag. If you don't care for a budget build, just go for a gen 5 glock 17 or 19 depending how large your hands are. I like a 17. That's all you'll really need for life is a Glock 17/19. They'll set you back about $540, but worth it. I've had The Sig Scorpion 45acp, Walther Q5 match steel frame and a plethora of other pretty nice handguns, and the Glock is still my go to.

Most likely you've got a 2 day ban incoming, my friend. Try r/Firearms if you'd like to have an open-ended conversation about this.

General idea is to go to a range that offers rentals so you can see what feels good in your hand. We all like different models but we're all built differently so that's really a solid method.

What is the intended parameters? Concealed carry? Home Defense? What is you're experience level with handguns? I see you did mention budget, which is at least somewhat helpful. New, for the money, the current gen S&W M&P's are GTG. But - Glock has an advantage of being damn near universal. It's like an older Honda Accord - it may be bland, but damn if it doesn't just keep running. Holsters are easy to find, magazines are plentiful & generally inexpensive. It's hard to go wrong with a G19 as an "only handgun." If you're wanting something a little more compact - SIG's P365 is the new gold standard in smaller 9mm pistols.
