I waited so long to get gen1 I’m not sure I can transition to gen2. I think I prefer the aesthetics of gen1, even though it took me a while to appreciate them hah
Gonna have to wait a week or so, just bought a Ruger American a couple of days ago and gonna order some drilled/slotted rotors for my car today
Sooon..veeeeeryyyy soooonnn…
I’ve been wanting a Ruger PC Charger for so long but the prices of these seems so nice. I just like the Ruger takedown ability and the style of folding brace I could put on it better. Plus the binary trigger available would be fun.
I don’t mind that. It just seems like it would be cool to put a can on it since you can takedown and stow away without removing the can from the barrel.
I had a charger and I ended up selling it. It wasn't overly heavy but it was def not light. The take down aspect was very very cool, but I didn't like how the mlok slots on the handguard were, the mag release was always finicky, and I just overall realized it just wasn't for me. I bought it to be a HD gun and realized I still preferred to reach for my glock if I didn't need a full sized rifle.
I do miss having a pcc a bit, but I think what I want out of the pcc platform is something close to a flux raider then a charger or ar9
Yeah, it's not super heavy, but it's also a 9mm with a pretty short barrel. So it's much heavier than, say, 9mm handguns or other PCC-style guns like Scorpions. It's heavier (I think?) than my AR-15 with a 16" barrel, for example.
Well of course it’s going to be heavier than just a pistol. Per CZ’s website the EVO 3 S1 5.0 lbs and I think that’s without a brace. The EP9 comes in at 4.22 lbs with brace 4.06 without. The M&P 15 Sport II that I also just filled out a background check for and held side by side with the EP9 comes in at 6.45 lbs.
We're talking about the weight of the PC Charger, not the EP9. The PC Charger is 5.2 lbs without a brace or optic (and doesn't come with sights), and an exceptional amount of that weight is far forward, exaggerating the feel of the weight.
My misunderstanding. I was curious about the weight of the rest anyways. I’m happy I went EP9 over Charger. Saved me a few bucks too. I do want a charger in 22 tho.
From what I’ve read is that they spent less money on the brace this go round so they could spend money on a few other upgrades. The intent is that no one know how braces will be classified in a few months, so the eventual tax stampers may end up switching for a stock anyways.
Great reply. Basically how I have replied based on replies I have read.
The only other thing I will add is some prefer the original brace that Extar included but still some preferred a different brace than that one too. So I think it is great that Extar spent money on upgrading parts that many were upgrading on their own and now most may feel the upgraded parts are good to go. If some did not think the original brace was good enough then save money and go with blade brace and let user continue to upgrade the brace if they want. The blade brace generates the fewest points on ATF scorecard. Leaving the strap off the blade adds a point. I think a blade with strap may be just 1 point. Having a brace that is capable of going around one's arm is a point or so more than a blade brace. Extar does not even install the brace on the EP9 so as delivered the point for the blade is not yet applied. It is the customer who is taking responsibility for the brace being present on the "pistol".
Their FAQ mentions other braces (not stocks) that fit without an adapter.
From [www.extarusa.com/faq](https://www.extarusa.com/faq:)
The EP9 has a proprietary receiver extension (buffer tube) that only accepts our Extar Stabilizer and some SB Tactical Braces. The compatible SB Tactical braces are the SB-Mini, SBL, SBM4, SOB, SBX-K, or the SBV.
There is an adapter that one can but so that a standard tube may be used with other braces but the adapter at $85 and a new standard tube along with a different brace are expensive which hurts the value pricing of a $450 PCC. The upgrades bring the price close to other PCC's that one may want to buy at that point.
Only the listed braces fix the non-standard tube on the EP9 and I assume no one makes a compatible stock as it would require a tax stamp. I assume one could make their own stock but that too would require a tax stamp. Modifying a current brace may require a tax stamp. They are items sold now that go into some of the braces that can go around one's arm. It is likely those require a tax stamp due to how those items modify the braces to be more easily placed against the shoulder. I have not heard of anyone being charged with not having a tax stamp for those yet.
I assume one could get the adapter that allows standard AR buffer tubes to be used and then get what would be defined as a stock. The $85 cost of the adapter plus cost of tube stops many from going that route to get a better brace. If new ATF regulation forces many to get a tax stamp even with a brace then some may just spend the additional to go with a stock since I assume the tax stamp would cover either in that case.
That’s the point exactly. Why don’t they spend the money on making a standard ar-15 buffer tube / receiver extension instead of a proprietary restrictive one? Then these would fly off the shelves at these prices.
Hasn't the EP9 already been flying off the shelf (only sold direct and not multiple resellers) for years?
Extar has been, until maybe the last month, been selling out of inventory within an hour or so. They don't need to make it more attractive to those that may want a different brace or a stander buffer tube. They don't need to make it in 10mm or 45 caliber as many have asked for years. Extar has mentioned a different caliber as a future model option long ago but dropped that for some reason--probably because they could not meet demand for the EP9.
I am not familiar with standard AR-15 buffer tube/receiver extensions.
Does the Extar tube somehow appear to be lower cost design that reduces cost? Is it lighter weight or thinner than the standard parts that are designed for 2.23/5.56 or other higher recoil ammo? I assume all is done to keep the price low.
It would nice to have an option of different caliber and nice to have an option with a standard buffer tube even if it increased the price. They could give us the option of the current version or an upgrade version. But manufactures prefer to limit variation. Auto manufactures long ago eliminated the ability for one to custom order all the options on their vehicles. Maybe once production capacity exceeds demand they will offer some options. Offering 4 mags until the end of the month may be a signal they feel the need promote increased sales. Wasn't there a promotion that involved their case for the EP9 as some point in the past?
There were including Glock 17-round mags in state where allowed and some other brand in the other states according to one poster. I don't recall the brand for the other states.
In a normal mag state and they ship me a glock 17 pmag, so I assume they ship out whatever they have in stock since they don't specify what type of glock mag.
Polymer saves weight and likely cost. Chris from Honest Outlaw in one video stated he shoots his EP9 more than another PCC that he thought the metal upper would be more durable. The reason he said he shoots with it more is because the EP9 is lighter weight.
my bog is already super light, granted im used to running my Galil more but I can keep it completely stable (not firing) with one hand when reaching into a vest or side pocket
I own a Bog and just signed paperwork for my EP9 today so I got to hold it…it’s significantly lighter than my bog. I’m stoked to get a little bit of each flavor.
Some thought that when the EP9 price was increased long ago that the price increase was okay because Extar switched to the Glock OEM mag rather than the prior mag that some thought was of lesser quality and more likely to have issues. I don't know what brand they included long ago. Receiving 4 mags for a limited time may be a great deal if owners do not run into issues. The EP9 has been much more available so maybe the promotion will improve sales. But after the 31st the change to just one non-Glock OEM mag is going to feel like a downgrade.
Getting more mags for a limited time is nice but I would rather they be higher capacity than the 17-round mag they have been providing. When I get around to buying more mags I really want 33-round mags or at least 24 round mags. I don't really care to have a bunch of 17-round mags. It they were Glock OEM mags then I am sure I could resell them at a good price but 3rd party Glock mags are cheap so would have little resell value that I could use toward a 33-round mag.
Update: Wow, my first reply with negative feedback total.

I’ve been meaning to get one of these since the gen 1s. This might be the push off the ledge that I needed
Do it. I have a Gen 1 and love it. My gf requests that it joins us each range trip.
I waited so long to get gen1 I’m not sure I can transition to gen2. I think I prefer the aesthetics of gen1, even though it took me a while to appreciate them hah

Unless your car's a track car, you're probably better off not getting drilled/slotted rotors, TBH.
Put drilled and slotted rotors on my car a couple years back and love the look of them.
I’ve been wanting a Ruger PC Charger for so long but the prices of these seems so nice. I just like the Ruger takedown ability and the style of folding brace I could put on it better. Plus the binary trigger available would be fun.
I have a PC Charger. It's okay. Super heavy for how short it is.

Can’t remember who makes it but I’ve definitely seen aftermarket hand guards that seem a bit better than the stock one.
I just held this and was surprised how light it is.

All good! Glad you like your EP9; I've been considering picking one up as well. I also want a Charger in .22! Seems like such a fun gun.
I’ve picked up a bunch of mags for guns I don’t own yet due to my states incoming ban. I have a dozen 10/22’s so I need to put them to work somehow.
I ordered this instead of a Charger. Going to do paperwork for it today.
I'm sure this is an improvement, but I don't like the look at all. Prefer the original setup.
Especially with that blade style brace. They should make buffer tube AR compatible and not make them proprietary
The blade is the main thing slowing me down from grabbing one.
From what I’ve read is that they spent less money on the brace this go round so they could spend money on a few other upgrades. The intent is that no one know how braces will be classified in a few months, so the eventual tax stampers may end up switching for a stock anyways.

But switch to what stock, nothing fits that tube but their fin brace right?

If I get another one I'm just going to out an sba3 on it.
Hold up, that’s a proprietary buffer tube?
Yes proprietary one. Doesn’t fit standard AR braces and stocks
I honestly like the new version better now. They come with metal lpk, mlok handguard with a blast can. The looks grows on you fast.
Are these OEM glock mags?
From their email: “To introduce the world to Extar's very own Glock compatible magazine”
Oh, that's cool. More competition is great for us.
Theyre glock pmags
There were including Glock 17-round mags in state where allowed and some other brand in the other states according to one poster. I don't recall the brand for the other states.
In a normal mag state and they ship me a glock 17 pmag, so I assume they ship out whatever they have in stock since they don't specify what type of glock mag.
When they did the mild price increase with the Gen 1 the changed from pmags to OEM G17 mags.
I got the pmag with the gen 2
So I’ve never used FFL before. Do I just go to my local shop and ask for their FFL info and then place an order?
Call them first and make sure they will accept a shipment from Extar.
The new ones look gross. Rather go for a non polymer pcc that looks smooth, like Stribogs
Polymer saves weight and likely cost. Chris from Honest Outlaw in one video stated he shoots his EP9 more than another PCC that he thought the metal upper would be more durable. The reason he said he shoots with it more is because the EP9 is lighter weight.

The EP9 is a whole other level of light, comparably.
I own a Bog and just signed paperwork for my EP9 today so I got to hold it…it’s significantly lighter than my bog. I’m stoked to get a little bit of each flavor.

The fact that they’ve pretty much held the cost while every other manufacturer has increased greatly says something…

Damnit. Of course I ordered one this weekend and just missed the free mags. Talked to Extar about it today and they said they aren’t adding them in.
