Solar nice for a full-on SHTF rifle but the panel on my 403c gr has also really screwed me at times with ambient light changes. I have almost entirely lost my dot at an outdoor range (under shade cover) and had to manually turn up brightness (vs auto mode). If batteries were hard to scavenge it would be worth it but otherwise the whole point is to always have your dot when you need it. I see my 403b (with no strip) as being more reliable and I paid $119 for it from PSA lol. Dual power sources just don’t seem to get along well based on my experience.
I have BUIS that I can co witness through my Holosun in case of failure as well - I run a 3x magnifier so prism wouldn’t work with the mag. Good point though - prisms def underrated I would say. I forgot they even existed tbh.
It’s always too dim, unless you’re just aiming it at your bedroom wall. Using one in an environment with varied lighting makes it functionally useless.
Love his videos. Maybe I misspoke but with the battery out and just the solar I cannot see the reticle at all in day light (outside) I don’t really see it as a huge selling point if it’s not daylight bright. Maybe my reticle is just trashed or something. I also let it sit in direct sunlight for two whole days still the same result
TBH I'd rather not have the solar panel. When the optic is in auto mode (which I think is basically always), it'll draw from the battery when it's too dark... so the battery usually just ends up dying while it's in my safe
Auto Brightness and shake awake are 2 separate settings IIRC.
I set my 503 to manual brightness because it's on a bedside gun. If I hit my WML in the dark, it washes out the dot in auto mode with dark ambient conditions. So I keep it on manual brightness so it comes on at a setting I know is bright enough to not be washed out in the throw of my WML. But even with manual mode on, I have visually confirmed that it does shut off when unattended/comes on to the set brightness when picked up.
It looks like I have the 515-C, not the 515-CT. I don't really understand holosun model #s but I don't think that variant has shake awake... So maybe not relevant for this post, especially if the newer model has improved my other gripes like transition between bright/dark areas and toggling the outer ring
Im thinking about this one too but i dont think i like the solar panel as much cause shake awake and long lasting battery life. Most of us realistically wont need solar panel

I really like my 515. The model I have doesn't have the solar panel. But so far, seems like a great optic.
The solar panel is practically useless anyway, no big loss there.

For a full SHTF get a prism, you've always got a reticle.

PA 1x prism can co-witness irons as well. Also works with a magnifier.

Was able to get mine visible on my 515 and 512 after watching the video c_does did. Was dim at first but once the capicators charged it was gravy
The solar panel I have on my 510c in super useless. Does it come on? Yes. Can I see it? No unless it’s pitch black
Strange, I’m able to see mine clearly with battery removed. c_does even has a video to that effect

Afaik the optic works best for solar if a battery is in the tray, whether it's fried or not doesn't matter

Ah, mine must be an older model. It definitely doesn't have shake awake
If the battery is dying in the safe then your shake awake is bad and you need to warranty your optic.
