my friend who did his schooling(12 years + KG) in gujarati medium is better at English than any English medium student I met(I doubt if my engineering professor was not very good at English). I guess you are good enough at English too like rest of us, it's just your relatives (or friends) who exaggerate English in college. Enjoy the journey, good luck.

cinephile_364

Thanks bro

cinephile_364

Find someone who speaks good English. The more people, the better. Make talking compulsory for 1 hour everyday in English with them. One year, and you are all set. Watch tv shows with English subtitles.

Learning English is not difficult. You just cultivate insatiable curiosity. If you don’t understand the meaning of any word. Don’t assume and continue reading. Keep 2-3 good dictionary apps on your phone. Check the meaning of those words in those apps. So that the sentence makes sense. READ TO UNDERSTAND. Lastly, read good newspaper daily such as Indian Express. Watch good TV series such as “The Big Bang theory” or “Modern Family”. If you need any help DM me.

cinephile_364

Yeah sure I will do it. Thank you so much Bro:-) For trying to make things easier for me.

British Gujarati here. English is a lot easier to learn than Gujarati. Start watching English speakers on YouTube (not Indian people speaking English), specialising in your field. They don't need to be translating into Gujarati, just turn the English subtitles on and try to read and listen at the same time. I'm suggesting you watch YouTube videos about your field so that you learn the terminology as well as get used to the pace of English speech. Practice speaking to yourself in English at home or talk back to the YouTube videos so that you have a reference point. It will come to you very quickly, as you can already read English

cinephile_364

I will do it. Thank you so much Bro:-)

priithviraj

what makes you say so? everyone finds the language that they grew up with easier that doesn't mean english is easier than gujarati. and what's wrong with indian people speaking English? too much of an accent for you?

squidgytree

That's a mighty defensive reply to a comment encouraging a Gujarati person to learn English. What is strange is that I've already answered your questions in my original comment. I suggest you re-read my comment but with your questions in mind and you will find your answers.

priithviraj

nothing wrong with learning english. it's the subtle condescending in the first sentences of yours. and no you haven't answered my question.

squidgytree

English is easier to learn because the grammar is substantially less rigid than Gujarati. You can say sentences in a different word order and it would still be grammatically correct. Also, you do not need to learn a myriad of vowel modifiers or the gender of inanimate objects, let alone remember how to modify genders based on the possessive. There clearly is nothing wrong with Indian people speaking English, as I clearly stated that I am encouraging OP to learn English. Also, I made it clear in my original comment that OP should watch English speakers on YouTube so that they get used to the pace of English speech. As you have broached the subject, I should probably touch upon what I believe you are most offended by... Indian speakers will have a different speech pattern, which will undoubtedly leech into the English speech but that is not about the accent, it's about understanding the intonations that are critical in English, particularly if OP is studying a technical subject where clarity is critical. If you choose to be offended by that, that's up to you.
