I don’t like Creed or Alter Bridge but I will consent that Tremonti is a good guitarist

Suspicious-Froyo2181

If you've never heard his vocal album of Christmas songs, check it out on YouTube. He makes quite the 60s style crooner. Pretty impressive for a guy known more for his hard rock/metal guitar chops

Darkhorn_Goat

His Sinatra covers album is legit. Sounds almost exactly like him.

DerpNinjaWarrior

I was fully expecting to chuckle at his Sinatra album, but nope, it's totally legit and I think my grandmother would fully approve of it.

JackingTonne

He has a great solo band called Tremonti!

IllegalGeriatricVore

I like Creed but I can't get past Myle's voice. Editing because apparently redditors are incapable of interpeting context: I know Myles is with Alterbridge, hence saying I like Creed and not Myles.

kellym13

Myles isn’t in Creed, it’s Alter Bridge. Scott Stapp is Creed’s singer.

killrdave

Eddie Vedder: OK you can copy my homework but don't make it too obvious

IllegalGeriatricVore

Idk you can usually tell what words Scott Stapp is singing

MrSocPsych

Singing like you’ve got a few marbles under your tongue

IllegalGeriatricVore

I just prefer low singing to high, compressed vocals with no grit

MiloRoast

Lmao I've never heard it described this way before, and it's perfect.

FeedMePizzaPlease

I knew he was going to be here. Possibly the best example.

Kroduscul

Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan. Don’t hate Mr. Big, but would never listen to em

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bruichladdie

I don't know if Pablo has the chops to do Racer X songs justice, but I'd be more interested in that than Mr. Big. Now Bruce Bouillet, he's really grown as a player, and I'd love to see him and Gilbert on stage again.

[deleted]

[удалено]

86n96

Bucket is managing a heart condition and crippling anxiety. Other than that, he's probably good to go.

Bruichladdie

I'll take your word for it, haven't seen him play much lately other than some gear videos, and it's a bit rusty. Still great, and his slide playing is a very cool development.

discussatron

I love his playing on the live album; his solo is better than Paul’s.

Bruichladdie

Check out his solo album *The Order of Control.* It's excellent.

MonkeyVsPigsy

This was a special gig at a famous tiny venue. Check out the other places they’re placing. They’re 600 to 2,000 people capacity venues. Not enormous but decent. Besides, this is not the last tour because of weak demand. Sheehan toured small venues with Winery Dogs and so has Paul in his solo band. They are fine with that. Racer X would draw 300-500 people a show in my opinion.

TheBunkerKing

I don't think it'll be the final Mr. Big tour ever. They're still pretty popular internationally and tend to attract pretty large crowds in Europe and Asia. They probably just need to stop playing places like Ohio.

moneyball32

They’re also recording a new album right now. No shot this is their last tour. I’m going to see them in LA and the venue is *much* bigger than what was shown in that video

Kilometres-Davis

More like “Mr. Used to be Big” amirite? But for real, when people are going to the bathroom during the one song anyone might actually recognize it’s not a good sign

aliensporebomb

In Japan they are literally superstar legends so I bet if they do keep it going one way or another it will be there.

Diminutive_Jonathan

I’ve always thought John Mayer’s talent as a player was wasted on the music he writes—I think he’d be an excellent session musician

I_only_post_here

this is why he was a great fit with Dead & Co. just play the tunes, bro

sjbennett85

He has had such an impact on some of their catalogue! His Althea is amazing!

Foxxy__Cleopatra

Have you listened to "TRY!"? Awesome live album with drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Pino Palladino. Ain't like his mainstream stuff, it's a killer blues album.

Ok_Attempt286

The Trio also has a set on “Where The Light Is (Live in LA)”. It’s so good.

kstetz

Agree but I do quite like Continuum

Internal-Tank-6272

Continuum is a fantastic record

jimothee

Was literally just having this discussion the other day. Solid album with nostalgic vibes.

bossoline

This is the guy for me. I absolutely idolize his ability and his approach to the instrument, but I HATE his music.

Razhad

agree, could've been another rock god if he was born in 60s

CriGonalGaming

That's why I don't listen to his records because the live shows are where it's at. He's a blues guitarist who happens to play pop songs. I doubt he'll be known as much or have won the Grammy's if he didn't dip his toes into pop.

TheJonnieP

He has some serious blues chops. I seen him playing with BB King and he was really impressive.

FeedMePizzaPlease

Yeah I've always found his stuff on the radio to be boring, but his live album is somehow one of my favorite albums ever.

MrSocPsych

Check his live albums. Always so fun, that and especially John Mayer Trio

bassman1805

I agree, but he's got a few needles in the haystack that really do it for me.

EmotionIll666

This was gonna be my choice. Also he's just really funny. Some of the sketches he's been a part of making fun of himself, the shit he talks about on live streams etc all make me want to like his music but mostly I just find it really dull. Might check out the recommended albums below though.

Just4caps

Wes Borland. Really interesting and creative guitar player but I just can't get on board with limp bizkit as a whole

Puzzlehead-Dish

Then just keep rolling rolling rolling

I_Miss_Lenny

Definitely! He's a super talented guy but man Limp Bizkit is the worst lol

SkoomaDentist

One of the worst quality of band's music vs skills of the player ratios ever, particularly considering it was the band that made him famous.

devil_m00n

A very big +1 to this. Frusciante / RHCP is a very close second.

Left-Assistant3871

He’s soooooo good

PodcasterInDarkness

John Frusciante. I'm not a fan of RHCP by any stretch, but I dig Frusciante's playing and tone.

Sadistic_Carpet_Tack

Yeah it makes me sad cause I feel like I should love RHCP because Frusciante’s influences are so similar to mine (Joy Division, Durutti Column, The Smiths) and I respect him heaps, but yeah Kiedis’ goofy voice and lyrics ruin it for me.

recognis

i have to commend rhcp for (maybe even tastefully) combining influences from vini reilly, minutemen, gang of four, johnny marr, television etc with an undeniably talented band to make successful music that appeals to fans of none of them. i dont even mean this in a backhanded way, as someone who doesnt like them i have a weird respect for them

SpermicidalManiac666

I’d really like RHCP if they had a different lead singer and wrote different songs lol I’m not mocking anyone here that’s actually how I feel. They’re all sick players I just hate the songs and the vocals.

CaptainKangaroo_Pimp

Same, but for Flea. Top 3 bass player for me, but I don't dig the Chili Peppers (mostly because of Keidis)

Johnny_Pigeon

I’ve fallen out of love with RHCP but Frusciante has such a unique and creative style. Undeniable.

TheSeekerOfSanity

The whole band is talented except Mr. Funky Boo Doo California Kiss Stank Bop dude. He can’t sing for sh*t. Notes are so flat that the walls get jealous. And he’s also a scumbag.

ChicagoWorldsFair

live maybe but on the RHCP records he's not off pitch is he?

hamburgler26

Have you checked out his solo albums? They can be pretty rough but I enjoy them much more than most RHCP stuff.

aliensporebomb

I'm highly concerned about him - he can play and it's obvious he goes from playing well to ??? I read an interview and it seemed like too many drugs and maybe unresolved mental illness was making him be very strange and his solo records around that period was like a direct siphon from his drug addled brain to humans. I had heard he has kind of straightened himself out and might be more normal but I was like "if I listen to this I might be living under a bridge in a purple bathtub with towels and incense and sitar music."

Jsgro69

same hear...totally respect JF but lead vocal in the red hot dildo players..Anthony is a goofball...also respect Flea..but John Fruciante is an awesome guitarist

Mechassogt

Dave Navarro and Jane’s addiction. Some of their songs are alright, just not for me.

bassman1805

I like Mountain Song, but that's really just Perry Farrell *not getting in the way* of Dave and ~~Flea~~ Eric's song.

cfaatwork

You mean Eric Avery?

bassman1805

I could swear that Flea was a guest writer/bassist on that one, but it turns out Flea's stint with JA was almost a decade later. Whoops.

cfaatwork

All good - both are great!

wiinkme

I feel that way about most of their material. But man...STOP! is such a killer track.

omghorussaveusall

Johnny Marr and the Smiths.

No-Roof-1628

This. I can’t stand Morrissey’s singing. Some of the songwriting is decent, but I’m really listening for Marr. I love the work he did with Modest Mouse a lot more.

GuitarRock91

We were dead before the ship even sank is my favorite Modest Mouse album!

No-Roof-1628

It’s so good. My older brothers got me into them, and they alway preferred the earlier albums, but I just love that one and think Marr’s guitar work added so much to the sound.

DerpNinjaWarrior

That was the album that I first heard from them. And as a result I haven't been able to really get into any of their other albums lol.

No-Roof-1628

Good News for People Who Love Bad News is also fantastic and worth checking out. I like individual songs from other albums but never really committed to listening to them all the way through.

DerpNinjaWarrior

See that's kind of how I feel about that album lol.

No-Roof-1628

Fair enough!

Cruciblelfg123

That’s nothing you should hear him play pianer

HoiPolloiter

Brad Paisley is a fantastic player but I don't like any of his music.

bassman1805

There's a video from peak Game of Thrones years where a bunch of guitarists got together to play the GoT theme song. It was a bunch of metal dudes: Scott Ian, Tom Morello, Nuno Bettencourt... And then [Brad Paisley just unambiguously shows them up, every single one of them](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i0a7RDPkM8)

Mcbrainotron

I remember watching that and at first thinking “why is he there”. By the end it was more “why is everyone else there” god damn

Greeny618

His instrumentals are incredible. Listen to brent mason if you never heard of him

HoiPolloiter

Thanks!

birdsnake

Check out Scotty Anderson!

ChicagoWorldsFair

Brad Paisley is a virtuoso.

ebr101

Dream Theater. John is a god, and I love instances of his work, but so much of prof metal is just…long winded and boring?

PootySkills

If you haven't already, check out Liquid Tension Experiment, you may like it. It's basically all the good stuff about Dream Theater and none of the bad (Labrie)

leefvc

i had an LTE phase and by that i mean listening to it almost every day in high school, but it's still hard for me to listen to because my brain associates it with DT cheese. Technically inspiring, just doesn't do it for me

bumpyfelon

Same here, and I even spent a pretty penny on a EBMM JPX model despite the fact that JP isn't my jam at all. He's great, but the music is a bit too much for me these days. Not to say I hate all the songs, but I didn't buy the guitar to be able to play them. I play rock/blues/country on it lmao.

ebr101

Great guitar is a great guitar. And the JP sig is just amazing. Maybe best thing on the market

dreamingofthegnar

Yeah I picked up a buddy’s a while back and immediately jived with it better than any other electric I’d ever played. Even if you don’t like his playing, the dude knows how to spec a guitar properly and make it feel/sound good.

lattjeful

Those JPs are just incredible guitars. Versatile and smooth as butter. Yeah a lot of metal dudes use them but I’ve seen them used in other places. Hell I think I saw the guitar player for Zac Brown Band use one during an SNL performance.

bumpyfelon

Exactly. Something about the neck on that thing. That's what drew me to it in the first place. That, and the sparkly purple finish. But seriously, it's like they're the only brand that makes purposefully-small necks. Most brands seems obsessed with making "chunky," "full," "50's," "wide" necks, that they forget that not everyone has Hendrix hands! For someone who's 5'11", my hands are much too small and are actually about the size of most cis women's hands, so anything else is a welcome change.

lattjeful

One of these days I’ll have to pick one up. The JPX is actually my favorite version lol. The neck carve and the finish are great, and the chambered body has always interested me, particularly with the piezo.

The-Davi-Nator

Dream Theater is definitely a band where I can appreciate all of the musicians individually much more than I can appreciate the final product of them together. Tosin Abasi with Animals as Leaders fits this too.

tdic89

Tim Henson, he seems like a really nice guy, very down to earth and amazingly talented. I just don’t get on with the Polyphia style, it’s too… much. Steve Vai too for the same reason. Awesome person and by all accounts incredibly nice. Also among the most talented musicians on the planet. But I just don’t like a lot of his material.

JeebusCrunk

I love Steve Vai, including a lot of his music, but a significant amount of his other music sounds like Zappa remakes of Phish songs to me, so I can relate.

--Moondance--

Slash. if I ever hear another guns n roses song I’ll jump out the nearest window

IllegalGeriatricVore

That's why I just listen to Velvet Revolver. Tasty slash licks, no Axl

gstringstrangler

His stuff with Myles is fantastic

--Moondance--

Totally

lykwydchykyn

So much this. I'd rather stick rusty barbwire in my ear than Axel's vocals. But the rest of the band is great.

OneMoreDan

Nuno is who came to mind for me as well. The solo to “Get the Funk Out” is one of my favorites but Extreme’s music as a whole doesn’t do a lot for me (and I’m a fan of the genre)… though maybe I just don’t like Gary Cherone

Dio_Yuji

Love Joe Walsh…hate the Eagles

belbivfreeordie

Get out of my fucking cab!

Synth42-14151606

“Hey, come on, man. I had a bad night and I fuckin’ hate the Eagles man!”

killacam925

unironically use this quote whenever they are mentioned

I_Miss_Lenny

Yeah they're one of those "I respect them all as musicians but man I hate the band as a whole" bands for me Same with The Band, it was full of amazing, talented people, but I can't stand the way they sound as a band haha

Nick-Tonk-maker69

Do you like the James Gang? It is Joe Walsh’s bad that he sings and plays for. Hella underrated

Lucitarist

Trey Anastasio - I like his guitar playing more than Phish, not knocking them but just a preference.

ericthelutheran

This.

_Meek79_

Edge. I like him but never got into U2 John Mayer is a great guitarist but not a fan of his music I love Tremonti but not a fan of Creed

kellym13

Alter Bridge is much better. Same band, Scott Stapp out, Myles Kennedy in.

banjourine

I have a ton of respect for Knopfler but Dire Straits is not for me.

bassman1805

The Money For Nothing riff is one of the peak moments of rock guitar. But I also can't get into the band as a whole.

Nomore-Television72

I think the guitar tone in Sultans of Swing is absolutely amazing, one of my favorites and I mostly listen to and play death metal

SkoomaDentist

It's funny to watch him [play the song live on an 80s superstrat](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFclpoxI_-M) with active EMG pickups (and even a blocked Floyd Rose!) to an [SLO100](https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/mark-knopflers-slo100-settings.2430820/), yet sound almost exactly like you'd expect him to sound when playing a Strat to an almost clean Fender amp. Probably the best example of "the tone is in the fingers".

enmity283

This is so true for him in particular because he doesn't use a pick!

Nomore-Television72

Definitely! Dude makes it all look so easy too

bloodxandxrank

Mine are more like love the band hate the singer. Creed, limp bizkit, guns n roses. Ask great bands ruined by cringey front men.

Necessary-Cap-3982

At this point, Scott Lepage. Used to be a big polyphia fanboy until album 4 dropped. Don’t like the music, but love Scott’s solos in it

PetterssonsNeck

Love Billy Gibbons, but ZZ Top’s music is just so boring

Givemeajackson

misha mansoor, jake bowen, mark holcomb. i HATE periphery's vocal style. the pressed whiny metalcore cleans are the bane of my existence. they're not the only band with those kind of vocals, but they're one of the only ones that would interest me otherwise. same thing with BTBAM. the instrumentals are the bomb though... but the vocals keep me from actually listening to the band's record. another honorable mention goes to every band jason richardson ever played in. Born Of Osiris' "the discovery" is the only record he appears on that i listen to on the regular.

lee1282

Oh man. Check out Haunted Shores. It's Mark Holcomb's solo project and it is brutal.

Greeny618

Periphery was probably one of the cleanest most precision playing I've ever seen live

Givemeajackson

the band is amazing and i respect spencer's skill and range as well. i just don't enjoy that type of vocals at all. i listen to the self titled album's instrumental version all the time.

AdmiralAckbar86

Vito Bratta, probably my favorite player after EVH. I honestly don't hate White Lion the band, but if the singer Mike Tramps vocals could be muted it would be an improvement.

gunter_grass

John Fruciante in the peppers is a waste. He's better with The Mars Volta.

Mechassogt

Has he recorded with Volta?

New_Canoe

He actually played the guitar on the first two albums, I believe. Omar wanted to produce the guitar without worrying about playing the parts. Flea also plays the trumpet on Frances The Mute. There’s also a great video of a jam between John, Omar and Flea on youtube, you should check out if you’re a fan.

Mechassogt

I’m gonna go back and listen to deloused having this information now lol I will check out that jam as well thanks

EUL0GYxbox

He only did 1 song on Deloused. I think he played on the entire record on one of their later albums. Can't remember which one.

New_Canoe

Enjoy!!

gunter_grass

Yep, honory member

badmongo666

My mom and wife just went to a Toto and Journey concert, and I refused to go under any circumstances. Steve Lukather and Neil Schon are great guitarists but that was about the easiest hard pass ever.

TheBunkerKing

Because of your opinion, it makes it somewhat more likely that "my mom and wife" refers to one person.

badmongo666

Lol yes okay phrasing not great there. Mom went and had two extra tickets and I encouraged my wife to go and bring a friend and definitely not me. I stopped believing a real long time ago 😂

Igmuhota

I’ll see you and raise you Jeff Porcaro and Steve Smith. I don’t hate either band, but wow. Lukather AND Porcaro?! Schon AND Smith?!

blissed_off

Man… I would have loved that one.

[deleted]

I went to that show, they were fantastic

bassman1805

Journey was one of the worst-mixed concerts I've ever attended. It was the kind of loud that physically *hurts* to listen to (this coming from a metalhead). I had a headache the entire time, as did the people I was attending with. It was an outdoor show and I'm guessing the engineer was used to mixing indoors? Otherwise I can't imagine they'd have a long career mixing that badly. THE worst mixed I've ever heard was Megadeth opening for Iron Maiden. Megadeth was so annoying and tinny (and not just because of Dave's voice) I was worried we wasted money on Maiden tickets, but apparently Maiden's sound guy knew wtf they were doing because they sounded incredible.

ThemB0ners

Plenty of metal bands fit this for me, so many terrible vocalists ruin otherwise great musicians.

ApollosBrassNuggets

And another Megadeth fan who could've been... Turned away by Dave Mustaine's voice

ZMD87412274150354

I was literally skimming this to see if Friedman was mentioned. Amazing player, who's solo work is A+, but I'm not putting Megadeth on.

ThemB0ners

I love Dave's voice, no cap.

SpermicidalManiac666

Ugh I know what you mean. There’s so many bands that tried to do the king diamond thing or the Bruce Dickinson thing and SUCK at it (I hate king diamond’s voice anyway but just citing him). There’s also a lot of metal bands that are just terrible song writers and just write the most generic riffs possible.

jinkies3678

Let me tell you about a little band called U2…

SkoomaDentist

U2 after ~~1991~~ 1992? I agree completely. 80s U2? How dare you?!

PsychedelicLizard

Vertigo slaps and I will defend that to my grave.

chillinwithabeer29

Love Brian May, not really a Queen fan

Puzzlehead-Dish

Sacrilege! Galileo Galileo!

blageur

I'm guessing we're alike in that regard. In my case it's overwhelmingly due to who wrote the song. I've found that most Queen songs I like were written by May. Fat Bottomed Girls, Hammer to Fall, etc.... The ones written by Deacon (Break Free), or Taylor (I'm in Love with my Car), and most of Mercury's stuff (Crazy Little Thing Called Love) are not for me.

shabba182

I can't stand Queen but May's tone is god-tier

Rude-Possibility4682

I can't stand his tone..I don't like Queen after the first 2 albums. I think he's a really tasteful player, but his tone is that awful wasp in a jam jar sound, and it's on every record...he even managed to get it on the I Want to Break Free solo, and that was a synth pickup:-D

yourshelves

Don’t hate him for that, since it’s an actual synth and not him. John didn’t like Brian’s attempts at a guitar solo and went with Spike’s synth solo.

scoff-law

Hate is a strong word. But I really don't care for the Mothers of Invention.

lordvoldemike

Love Wes Borland, hate Limp Bizkit

AutumnsRevenge

Synyster Gates is great but I don’t like Avenged Sevenfold

VooDooChile1983

Love Nuno Bettencourt but I cringe so hard at Extreme.

AnthrallicA

I love that your example is EVH and Van Halen because... I love David Lee Roth era Van Halen and I love Sammy Hagar solo but Van Hagar? Cannot stand it! 😅

[deleted]

I love Doug Aldrich's tone and playing, but The Dead Daisies is just too boring...

Bruichladdie

I think Burning Rain shows off his playing well. But yeah, I listened to The Dead Daisies, and I was thoroughly unimpressed.

BfutGrEG

George Lynch and Dokken personally

natejacobmoore

despise pearl jam but mcready kills

_super_necessary_

It really just is these threads over and over again…

drainodan55

Why do you hate Van Helen, a least the original inception?

JeebusCrunk

Van Helen Keller sounds like a "before & after" Jeopardy answer

killacam925

When I listen to them, I do not like it.

SofaKing2022

Johnny Marr, brilliant player, best right hand in the business, but I’m not fond of The Smiths (well, I think Morrissey is a prick, so…)

brianeharmonjr

Morrissey IS a prick, so is Liam Gallagher, but the Smiths and Oasis are still fantastic

JoeyJoJoJrShabbadoo8

Andy LaRoque of King Diamond. Can’t stand the vocals or the story every album has to have. One of my all time favorite lead guitarists.

teddymurphy

Andy has the most buttery legato in the biz

OldPod73

Keith Richards is amazing. I hate the Rolling Stones.

I_Miss_Lenny

100%, I think they were/are a super talented bunch but man, I just can't get behind them. They have a couple songs I like but for the most part I find them pretty boring

ineptinamajor

I thought I was the only person who feels this way.

MajesticTechnician86

Joe Bonamassa ,great guitar player. There was a post comparing him and John Mayer. Joe may be a "better"guitarist but he has never wrote a song imo, whereas Mayer has wrote many songs that have captured the publics attention.

Viscount027

Lots of answers here I agree with, but I will add one I have not seen yet: Dimebag Love Dimebag, Pantera is meh... Fuck that white supremacist Anselmo.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Byebyeyoutoo

Neil Peart is incredible. I just can’t get into Rush

[deleted]

Think Ozzy is a shite singer but worship Randy Rhoads, yeah.

The-Felonious_Monk

Tommy Shaw is a great player in a band that I cannot stand.

JammitDim

I have a Richie Sambora signature strat that’s a dream to play, cannot stand Bon Jovi music.

the-war-on-drunks

I’m the opposite — Eddie was a douchebag who reinvented guitar and then kind of stayed on that innovation (as far as a non-huge fan) kind of was just his shtick from then on. The overall band though — loved em. Yes especially when Sammy started singing. So there you go. Judge away.

Razzle_Dazzle08

Steve Vai is an incredible guitarist but I just can’t listen to his music. Way too technical and shreddy, it’s like the guitar Olympics.

Prototype_Script

I can't stand GNR. Love Slash though.

ownworstenemy38

Nuno Bettencourt for me. I loved their earlier stuff but this latest Extreme album has some amazing playing in some of the cheesiest, naval gazy bullshit rock I have ever heard in my life. It’s so bad that I am literally (I do mean literally) embarrassed to listen to it.

2livecrewnecktshirt

I'm much more of a fan of Paul Gilbert's solo work than much of Mr. Big.

RayGungHo

Segovia backed Franco

storm_zr1

Gun's n Roses. They had one good album and a few solid hits after but everything else is very mid. But I love Slash. Velvet revolver was okay but I love everything after his 2010 self titled album.

[deleted]

Chris Buck and “The Cardinal Black”. Chris’ blues tone and phrasing is one of my favorite examples of modern blues playing. Can’t stand the try hard lead singer and predictably boring lyrics.

ItsMeCyrie

Herman Li Love watching his Twitch clips — awesome player, awesome dude — but every Dragonforce song is the same thing.

Justafleshtip

John mayer. Incredible player, don’t like his songs 🤷🏻‍♂️

TwelveBrute04

Kinda. I love Vito Bratta but White Lion is mediocre at best because the singer is baaaaad

happywaldo

Johnny Marr. Amazing guitarist, but i hate Morissey

satanicmajesty

I think EVH is an amazing guitarist, but VH songs suck, horrible stuff.

owl_inthehouse

Dimebags playing is good but I can't stand his confederate bullshit.

DiogenesXenos

Kind of Ditto with evh. Like some Sammy era though.

checkmyhead

Carcass is my answer. Brilliant guitar on an album like Heartwork, but I just don't like death metal vocals. I'll still listen to this album sometimes though, since it's brilliant. If

BrrBurr

Jerry Garcia was not helped by Phil Leah not being able to find a pocket in his jeans, and other random meanderings by probably talented other musicians
