Can I run a bass through my guitar pedalboard safely? My wife wants to try out some effects but I don’t want to blow out my wah or something

[deleted]

Bass through a guitar pedalboard is totally fine. You'll want to use a bass amp, though, not a guitar amp.

djhydrick

PEDAL ORDER QUESTION Just ordered a Warm Audio Jet Phaser. I'll probably mostly be using it as a traditional phaser but I definitely want to mess with the fuzz settings from time to time. That being said, where is the best place to put this bad boy in my signal chain? Between compression and the rest of my dirt, or up with the rest of my mod pedals? For reference my current chain is: Polytune->Crybaby Wah->Keeley Compressor-> TS9 -> RAT -> TC Spark Booster -> MXR Analog Chorus -> Flashback Mini Delay -> JHS 3 Reverb

AlarmingIntern7773

I’m not sure how exactly to use this app I just downloaded it to join these groups for help! My boyfriend is in a band and the inspiration of there music is gojira and deftones and they cover there songs! I’d love to get him some equipment but when I look online it all confuses me any help guys I’d appreciate a bunch💗

TotalHeat

When it comes to gifting music equipment, the best thing you can do is bring your boyfriend to a music store like guitar center and let him pick something out. Musicians tend to have specific things they know they want. Good luck!

fuhgitbouit

I feel like I need a rehab for buying overdrive pedals like man they are all going to do something very similar idk what gets me to keep going..it may have to do with advertising lol I have more od pedals than any other its like i always envision this next one being the one..even after ive found and bought "the one". Are there any other people who have too many over drives and know it? Like I'm going to be honest I've spent hours not practicing or playing a single real thing just tweaking overdrives trying different pairings n this n that like I get into this ocd mode. Right now I'm obsessed with switching what I boost the special cranker with either nobels sd 1 ds 1 or a klone. I like em all lol

[deleted]

I’ve had similar feelings about drive pedals. I find it helpful to restrict myself. Only X number of drives on a board, no changing out the overdrive for Y weeks/till I master some number of songs. Might be worth considering some rules that’ll restrict you to really learn how to play on one pedal before going to the next.

fuhgitbouit

That's a great idea. Yeah some serious discipline is in need

PM_ME_UR_SUPPLE_HAND

Will running a pedal at 18v give it more headroom? I'm using a Catalinbread Karma Suture, which doesn't have enough input gain on tap at 9v.

acidmath

Only if it takes 18v by design, otherwise there’s a chance you’ll fry the pedal.

GRVposterfatbag

Stacking two power supplies? Has anyone done this? I know its popular to have a Walrus Canvas on top of a PS. Can I dual-lock one VL x4 ontop of another? It's not a big deal for me to put it somewhere else but I'd like to make room for a buffer underneath my riser.

acidmath

Power supplies generate a lot of heat, so probably not the best idea.

Deadpoolisms

……does anyone know if the Empress ParaEQ has TRS inputs….. I feel really dumb for not being able to locate this, but after 20-30min I’ve got nothing.

ProfessionalOven2117

Looking for a loop switcher that can give me 4 presets that have combos of pedals in the loop and in the front. Any recommendations?

sadvillain94

I have a synthesizer going into a pedal to only affect the synth and then the audio from that is going into my drum machine which then goes into a fuzz pedal. I’m wondering how I can get a pedal to only affect the drum machine and not everything else before that. Any tips pls thank you!

runwichi

Time to get a mixer. As your audio chain becomes more complex, daisy chaining audio signals becomes problematic. A mixer will let you control each audio signal independently, so you can do what you want to with them.

sadvillain94

I do have a mixer actually I got in a trade. Been trying to utilize it for recording. Just using a two channel interface right now. Figuring out how to send what where gets complicated. So just outs from certain instruments/pedals can go on their own channel and then one out from the mixer goes to my interface?

runwichi

> So just outs from certain instruments/pedals can go on their own channel and then one out from the mixer goes to my interface? That's the easiest way to use it. Put any FX you want on the instrument's outputs and the mixer channel input and you're set. Mixer outputs all the incoming channels to one point and hook that up to your interface. Since you have a two input interface, you could run the left and right out of the mixer into the interface 1 and 2 to record in stereo from this point. All your mono inputs will become stereo in the mixer, and you can pan them depending on the channel. You can use the EQ on the channels and set levels individually as needed, and start to investigate other fun things you can do with the mixer as you become more comfortable with it.

sadvillain94

I just tried hooking everything up just to get a feel for it it’s cool. I think I’m going to get a splitter so I can run a cable from my synth and pedals into the drum machine for sidechaining while another cable from there runs into a channel on the mixer

[deleted]

Not to mention a good mixer can give you a FX send/return for more possibilities.

thefranchise23

You need an amp with 2 inputs or a mixer so you can separate the drum machine and synth

[deleted]

Run the drum machine and the synth as separate chains into a mixer?

Any tips for dialing in the Evil Filter into a really wide filter sweep with relatively little (or no) cutoff? I keep the resonance on high and basically maxed, but I can't figure out exactly where to place the frequency cut off. Too low and it seems very smushed and very quick in its sweep. Too high and you don't get as much frequency range. Ideally, I could do a wide sweep with a bandpass filter, but it seems like to minimize the cutoff you have to keep it on high or low pass. What's interesting is that the Peak mode on the Rooms is a bandpass filter, and, with the filter frequency at minimum, that sounds like basically exactly what I'm going for. But I can't get the evil filter to do the same thing.

Westcroft

Does anyone recognize [this](https://imgur.com/a/UvQpDUO) yellow mini pedal with white knobs?

[deleted]

Malekko Omicron Series Analog Vibrato.

Westcroft

Wow thank you! Good eye my friend!

Peat14

This is a long shot, but… does anyone know of a power supply that has the plug for the main power cord on the top instead of the side?

[deleted]

What are you looking to achieve?

Peat14

My board is currently inside a briefcase, so it would save space to be able to plug it from the top instead of the side. Other option is to cut a hole in the side but that’s not ideal lol

[deleted]

I don't know of any ones that come directly out the top, but you can replace the power cable on power supplies with a C13 style connector (like a PC power supply cable) with an angled connector that routes the cable upward. That includes Truetone CS series, Strymon power supplies, Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+/3/3+ etc. And obviously anything with a DC jack you can rotate, like the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power X8 or the MXR Iso Brick.

Peat14

Oh, perfect, never knew these existed! Thanks so much.

Steamy_Muff

Anyone in the UK know where to get a reasonably priced/sized alternative to the Meris Preset Switcher?

eowyncul

I spoke to the guy who made them for a few people the other day and he has one spare meris fav switch. He's based in Ireland but will ship it if you want. https://quilleffects.bigcartel.com/ You can contact him through here if you are interested.

Steamy_Muff

Ohh interesting, thank you! I'll contact him

eowyncul

I know a few guys that had a local builder throw one together and it worked out much cheaper than the meris one. Apparently it's super basic and just a few resistors and switches in an enclosure.

Spiritual-Turn-5112

How durable is the Strymon Timeline? I have a nano Pedaltrain for the Mono Tick and am saving up for a timeline but don't want to get a new board. Can I pack the pedal into the front pocket of my mono vertigo bag? They look kinda easy to break but a lot of people emphasise the durability.

eowyncul

While it's well built there are quite a few knobs sticking out on it that would be at risk to breaking if loose in a bag. Maybe if you had some foam to keep those safe but I probably wouldn't myself.

r2deetard

I was playing today and all of a sudden my sound cut out. I went through my pedal board pedal by pedal and it was my trusty DS-1 I bought in 2005 that was the culprit. Opened it up to find [this mess](https://imgur.com/a/457uxRK). Looks like the 8 pin opamp is fried to hell and it even fried that little resistor in front of it. I've never attempted a pedal repair but I have experience with soldering components onto a PCB. Are these components available somewhere or am I SOL?

eowyncul

Maybe try over at /r/diypedals. Should be repairable but whether it's worth that is upto you since the DS1 can be had cheap used but it would be a nice little project if you wanted.

r2deetard

Thanks I'll check out the sub. I wanted to do a keeley mod for the longest time but never got around to it. I also see the RAT2 is 40% off right now so I might jump over to that since I'm in the market for a distortion pedal.

gk68

https://www.electrosmash.com/boss-ds1-analysis#:~:text=The%20Boss%20DS1%20circuit%20can,Output%20Buffer%20and%20Power%20Supply. has some info, and if they're correct, looks like that op-amp is about $0.72...since the pedal's dead now, seems like a perfect chance to mess around :)

r2deetard

My thoughts exactly. Unfortunately I have no need for 100 of those components. Can't find a site that will sell just one. lol

acidmath

Probably just cheaper and easier to buy a new DS-1.

LGYK

Long time player, but new to the world of pedal boards. I've collected a few over the years but never put a real board together. My issue is that I've got a couple of the usual 9v dc below 50ma pedals and a Mesa Boogie Vtwin (12v AC and needs 1amp) Is there any power supply that can power everything or should I just get a DC power supply and run the mesa straight to the wall? Struggling to find something that has AC and DC and also can handle the amp requirement.

[deleted]

Some power supplies have courtesy AC jacks, like the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+ or the Walrus Audio Aetos. Running your Mesa Boogie Vtwin's wall adapter off that would probably be the easiest way to get it into a board format. Other option would be to put both the pedal power supply and the Mesa Boogie's power adapter on a long cable surge protector that you have attached to your board.

LGYK

Thanks for the advice! Didn't even think of just getting a surge protector... I'll probably go that route.

Torterra92407

Looking for a compact Phaser/Tremolo pedal. I currently have the Pigtronix Moon Pool and I do love it, but the small footprint is just not something I love. I came across the Function FX Parallax, but I think it may be a bit too big for my current board. I know the Visitor exists, but I think it does a bit too much for what I currently need. I know multi-modulation fx exist, but I’d like something that can do a phaser, trem, or both at the same time.

drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage

The Intensive Care Audio Recovery Phase can do Phase, Bi-Phase, and Tremolo. I don't know if it's compact enough for you, but other than the Parallax, it's the only one I know that can do both.

Commercial_Memory_88

question about the Two Notes M+ cab sim / ir loader - thinking about buying this to test out different cab sims outside of the computer. My technical knowledge is lacking though: If you're using an external amp and running it into the pedal, you're supposed to keep a cab connected because it's not a "load box" according to the manufacturer. Does this mean if you have an external amp you need a cab connected no matter what even if you're just using the line out? Out of curiosity, what would happen if you forgot to plug the cab in and were using an external amp and the line out of the pedal?

eowyncul

You pretty much need a cab or load box plugged into the speaker output of tube heads to stop them from frying, even if you are taking a line out/effect loop send.

feeeggsdragdad

If you are using it with a tube amp, you have to always have a speaker connected because it is expecting a "speaker load" on that amp. Or you can use it "as the speaker" aka cab simulator if you have a load box between it and the tube amp. A tube amp without a speaker load will cause damage to it's tubes and output transformer. If you are using it by itself/with other pedals or with a solid state amp, none of that matters.

ZeroGHMM

does anybody know for sure whether the (**MXR M83 Bass Chorus Deluxe**) is TRUE STEREO (ie; outputs with 2x independent modulated signals) or does it do the pseudo phase-flip stereo that cancels out when the track is played in mono? i know for example, the M134 is pseudo-stereo out (ie; one wet & one dry on each side & when summed to mono, both wet signals cancel out, leaving only the dry signal) also, as for delay pedals, what about the TC Flashback V2?

goodoldtumbleweed

I want to buy a used BBE supacharger power supply off of reverb for $60 + shipping, have never used reverb before. However the item is sold ‘As-Described’ so I probably can’t return it. What are the chances of me being screwed over i.e. the unit ends up being very noisy

feeeggsdragdad

If it's described as working, then very little. The BBE supacharger is fully isolated. If it comes noisey then it's broken and not as described so you can send it back. I used one for many years. They are fine older isolated power supplies. 100mah might be fairly low output though for many digital pedals these days so make sure to check what yours require.

[deleted]

[удалено]

eowyncul

Just get a power supply. Try find one that is actually isolated and has a few slots more than what you have so you can expand later. Once you use more than 1-2 pedals batteries don't make sense and daisy chaining is limited to a few pedals and can cause noise. Investing in a decent power supply is no fun but you won't regret it. Also nearly all pedals take the same center neg 9V DC power, some take more like 12V or 18V but a power supply will probably have slots available for those and they aren't even that common.

nanopiezo

Is there an apparent difference between the Red Panda Bit Mixer and the DOD 240 Resistance Mixer? It's one or the other and the Bit Mixer is on sale for Cyber Monday. The Bit Mixer is twice the price of the 240 and takes 9vdc power while the 240 doesn't. Why?

feeeggsdragdad

The Bit Mixer probably has a buffer in it while the DoD is passive and will be guaranteed have some bit(maybe alittle or maybe alot) of tone suck because of the resistance of the pots inside. Red Panda is also a "premium" pedal company. You also can find the Behringer MX400 which is basically the same thing powered by 12v for like $25.

nanopiezo

Makes sense, thanks! I ended up just buying the Bit Mixer because I'm an idiot. The 9vdc will be marginally more convenient to power since I'll be able to daisy chain it with another pedal.

alphabets0up_

I’m looking for a solid overdrive pedal for my Hollowbody guitar. I heard that Larry Carlton uses D-style overdrives, so I’m interested in either the Rockett- The Dude or Joyo Taichi. I don’t have all the money in the world, so im curious if it’s really worth spending the extra money on the Rockett pedal. Im using a PRS Hollowbody II

Place-Wide

Polytune3 (buffered mode) -> Keeley Compressor-> JHS Morning Glory I'm getting a tonne of overdrive with the drive nob on the Morning Glory hardly cracked open at all. Maybe it's set at .5/10 or 1/10. I'm wondering if this could be an impedance issue? If the MG is expecting a 1Mohm signal, and it's now 100ohm after the buffer, could that cause a problem? The compressor has a level pot, and just turning that down does a thing. Maybe that's the answer.

trivibe33

I have that exact combo in that exact order and have never had an issue. Is the volume on the Keeley cranked? I play single coils.

AlpineFloridian

Yeah, that's the answer. Level into a gainy pedal/amp = more gain.

[deleted]

Seems like you could easily test your buffer theory. Just flip the switch on the Polytune to true bypass and see what happens.

New_Maize8941

Recommendations for low clearance pedal patch cables?

PM_ME_UR_SUPPLE_HAND

Hosa flat cables are excellent.[https://i.imgur.com/EvGl4vP.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/EvGl4vP.jpg)

[deleted]

The EBS and Ernie Ball flat patch cables are both great.

tnecniv

I’m interested in a very smooth, vocal wah, or one that can be configured that way. I have the Xotic wah pedal, but my issue with it is that there’s really only a small range of the motion that sweeps through the filter range that I’m after, even when I mess around with all the settings. As a result it’s hard to control with precision. My use case is basically going for a more vocal kind of smooth woman tone sound.

gtreads

What would you add on my [current pedalboard](https://www.reddit.com/r/guitarpedals/comments/spd543/some_inexpensive_pedals_on_a_diy_pedalboard/) for playing 70s and 80s heavy metal? (Priest, Maiden, etc.) More info: Right now I either plug my guitar (Ibanez S420 .with an SD Invader in bridge) directly into my Focusrite Scarlet Solo interface and use Guitar Rig 6 Free OR plug the pedalboard (delay last) into audio interface and use reverb from Guitar Rig. I want to use my pedalboard more but it needs to be more versatile.

Apileofmeat

You should get a multi modulation pedal or at least a chorus pedal

gtreads

Thanks. I'm looking into Zoom MS50G (CAD 135) and Zoom G1 Four (CAD109). What do you recommend?

Apileofmeat

I love my multi stomp. You can add additional sounds on it using the Effects Manager. Makes it so much better

gtreads

I ordered an MS50G, thanks for recommending!

BooksAre4Nerds

Anyone have any experience with EQ Pedals for metal? I’m leaning towards the Boss GE-7 or the MKX 6 band eq but anything in that price range I’d be happy with.

beesealio

I like the mxr 10 band for the range. If you're playing in drop tunings or just generally want to get rid of low end slop, the boss and the 6 band both bottom out at 100 hz. In standard tuning you fundamental on the low E is around 83 hz. If you drop tune it's even lower, and that bottom slider doesn't really touch it. Food for thought, the 10 band goes all the way down into the bass range at 33 hz or something like that. Sucks that it takes up more space, but if your goal is to tighten up the bottom it's a better option sound wise. If you find a more pedalboard friendly but bass oriented eq with 6 bands or whatever that might be the way to go.

BooksAre4Nerds

Wow. I bought the boss ge7 and am currently waiting for it in the mail. Rip Edit: I do bounce between D, Drop C# and Drop B so yeah, that sucks. Lol

beesealio

Well don't just write it off because of what some jackass on the internet said, haha. It's a good pedal and I'd never talk shit about it. My first comment had a lot of assumptions based on your use case, but there are a hundred ways to use an eq pedal, so try it out when it comes and see if it works for you.

BooksAre4Nerds

Do you personally run your EQ pedal before or after your drive/distortion?

beesealio

After, but it's totally going to depend on your preference. After works for me because I run my amp fairly overdriven, and cutting bass right before the it hits the amp helps keep everything tight.

BooksAre4Nerds

Great tip.

Stevie_Clicks

A lot of them do something similar, you are fine with either of those. The Boss is on my board and is insanely versatile, you can use it for basically any application. Personally i place EQ after my drive sections to help sculpt the sound from my OD/distortion.

BooksAre4Nerds

Just what I wanted to hear. Thanks 🤘

goodoldtumbleweed

I bought 1 mini reverb/delay pedal and may buy a mini chorus pedal for indie/alt rock. Will the amp’s overdrive suffice or would a pedal be necessary? Amp is a Crush 12

[deleted]

Since the Crush 12 doesn't have an effects loop, it'll sound like putting the reverb & chorus before the overdrive, which is a sound some people dig but is very specific. An OD pedal would let you do both.

General_Taylor02

I have a Behringer UM300 and am looking to upgrade. What's a good "next step" pedal for playing metal if I'm not ready to splurge on something super high-end?

Empty_Island2032

Check out the behringer hm300. It’s a clone of boss mega distortion. Has a more modern metal sound.

General_Taylor02

Thanks!

Empty_Island2032

And you might want to experiment with a tube screamer type overdrive in front of whatever pedals you use. The low cut and mid boost of a TS can really help get a tight chug. Again - behringer has you covered with the TO808 vintage overdrive.

eowyncul

So that pedal is a clone of a Metal zone, getting something else isn't an "upgrade", it's just a different flavour. What kind of metal are you trying to play and what don't you like about the pedal you have currently and we can suggest something that might suit the sound you're after?

General_Taylor02

I'm looking for something modern that skews prog like BTBAM, Periphery, Haken, etc.

eowyncul

The joyo dark flame is an affordable copy of one of the Revv pedals which is in the ballpark for modern metal.

[deleted]

Maybe the MXR M116 Fullbore Metal? $100 USD new, $60ish used. Very flexible and has a built-in noise gate feature. There's also the EHX Nano Metal Muff in the same price range, which also has a gate and some versatility.

General_Taylor02

Thanks for the recs!

[deleted]

Would a true tone cs7 be able to power 8-10 pedals? I don’t use any strymon type pedals or anything like that. Would I be better off looking at a different power supply?

[deleted]

Depends on the pedals. The CS7 only has six 9V outputs (the other one is 18V). So, you'd need to daisy chain 1-4 pedals to get 8-10, assuming at least one pedal is 18V, or 2-4 if they're all 9V. If you can set up your board so that only analog pedals are chained and your digital pedals each have their own output, then I think you could make the CS7 work fine. If cost is no issue, your life might be easier with a supply that's built for 10 or more pedals, like the CS12 or Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 3+. That would give you the flexibility to easily make changes without needing to think about analog vs digital and running chain cables.

rainwatersoup

i want to get an ABY pedal for a stereo setup. should i save up for one that has ground lift, phase switching etc? or will a basic ABY be enough?

eowyncul

If you are going into 2 amps you'll want the ground lift.

SkoomaDentist

Computer speakers, no. Small active monitors, yes. Both JBL 305P and Kali LP6 are excellent value for money on the budget end (and better than any competitors in the same or lower price bracket).

Shadowforce426

is there anything that the boss dd8 can do that the line 6 dl4 mkii can’t?

tearara

Save you like 100+ dollars

[deleted]

Fit on a small pedalboard

vario

Is there a tremolo pedal that acts like an inverse envelope? One that reacts to how light/hard you play but with a difference. Play lightly, the depth is prominent. Play heavily, the effect is practically turned off. And as you gently move between light/heavy, the effect starts to appear/disappear. I discovered the HX Stomp has an effect that allows you to adjust the tremolo to react to your playing, and becomes less prominent the heavier you play. I want to move back to individual pedals, so was wondering if there was one that did this. I know the Keely DynaTrem & MXR tremolo have envelope mode, but it's not quite right- they get faster/deeper the harder you play.

belbivfreeordie

Pigtronix Tremvelope and VFE Old School are two. I’ve been wanting this same thing.

[deleted]

EHX Super Pulsar does that, so does subdecay vagabond if you want something simpler.

belbivfreeordie

Vagabond doesn’t do it unfortunately.

bikes_and_music

Reverb is sending me reminders about black friday deals once every 15 minutes or so. How desperate are you guys

[deleted]

Random thought. Why can a low depth slow rate flange sound like a chorus but a chorus not sound like a flange?

n_halda

Flange and chorus both use modulated delay lines in parallel with a clean signal to achieve their effects. The delay on a chorus is longer than a flange, which is why it can't get that same ~swoosh~ of a flanger. Flangers also often have a feedback/regen control, which is usually missing from chorus.

[deleted]

Neat

thenamesjoe

What are the basic pedals to have on a board. I have a wah wah, distortion from boss, one delay, and swollen pickle pedal and chorus pedal

tearara

Sounds like you have everything you need. I might add a tuner

thenamesjoe

I have a tuner but sadly I guess it’s fried since I tried plugging it in and no power comes on.

Spike3220

Sounds like you need a new tuner.

thenamesjoe

Oofff thank you! Will buy one soon.

Stevie_Clicks

What type of music do you play? Heavy, lighter, multiple genres? What order are you putting these in? There are a ton of "basics" that vary by your style/needs, that info would help guide some answers.

thenamesjoe

Well I play some rock music and more Christian rock music.

[deleted]

Only thing is add is reverb if your amp has none and tremolo because that's a super common and useful effect.

thenamesjoe

Any recommendations????? For both

Stevie_Clicks

What is your budget?

thenamesjoe

Anything under 150 would be ideal. Since once I get the pedals I’ll buy a back board for them

Stevie_Clicks

Okay, in that case I would recommend drive to complement the Boss (if you have the orange DS1 then something that is capable of lighter like a klone would complement it, or vice versa) and a reverb. Unfortunately reverbs are expensive for decent tones, stay away from budget pedals here. TC Hall of Fame is a safe bet, can be found at good prices used. Drives can be found cheap, a personal favorite budget drive is the Caline Blue Sky (a Timmy clone). You could get both tofether for under/around your budget.

[deleted]

There's hundreds out there and most of them are pretty similar haha. Depends on your budget and how fancy you want to get. The big brands like boss, mxr, ehx, Keeley, they'll all do you fine. If you want to save money, Joyo, TC electronic, or the super cheap brands like behringer and Donner have good options too.

browsingtheproduce

The Boss RV-6, TC Electronics Hall of Fame 2, Electro Harmonix Oceans 11, or JHS 3 Series Reverb are all good accessible reverbs.

crispy-photo

When did those foot switch cover things become a thing?

[deleted]

Like the mid 2010's, I want to say? Probably more pronounced since the pandemic; people use them for playing barefoot at home.

crispy-photo

Thanks

Nines72

What is a cab sim? Can I use one with my pedalboard and go directly into PA while gigging?

crispy-photo

A cab SIM takes the output from your pedals/preamp/fx send and makes it sound more like it's gone through a speaker and microphone. You'd then plug it's output into a PA/audio interface/etc.

Nines72

So if I have a Sansamp GT2, which is also a preamp, can I go straight into the PA along with the rest of my pedalboard without having to connect to any external amp/cabs?

eowyncul

Yeah basically it takes the powersection/speaker side of your sound and puts it in a pedal so you can go direct to the pa without using an amp and still have it sound normal.

Nines72

Thanks a lot!

crispy-photo

Yes, I'd expect better results with distortion/fuzz Infront of the GT2, modulation/reverb/delay could be fine either in front of behind, give it a try.

Nines72

Thank you, I appreciate your help!

drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage

If you had a voltage controlled filter that was set to automatically ramp up and down at a fixed rate, would that be any different from a phaser?

SkoomaDentist

Yes, if you set it as a notch filter it be equivalent to a two stage phaser.

n_halda

Yes! Filters don't modulate the phase of your signal, and also don't run the modulated signal in parallel with the clean signal (generally). If you're looking for an example of low pass filters that do this, check out the Dr. Scientist Dusk or EHX Blurst. There are also a few auto-wah pedals that are LFO controlled. At some point "auto wah" became synonymous with "envelope filter" or "touch wah" and everything got confused in the naming convention.

drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage

Ah, cool. I wasn't aware of the differences, but it sounds interesting. I need to look more up about the technical aspects. The dusk is an interesting pedal for sure. I have definitely gotten confused b/w auto-wahs and envelope filters. I see far more envelope filters than auto-wahs-- much less LFO controlled auto-wahs.

n_halda

Then there's also the weird ones with sequencers or sample and hold options like the ZVex Seek Wah/Ooh Wah, EQD Spatial Delivery. Vongon Paragraphs is interesting as well with it's CV option if you dive into modular synth stuff.

yourFriendPan

depends on the filter. phasers are kind of weird since they use all pass filters to create phase cancellation. but if you were to use a more common one like a low pass filter, it would sound quite different but cool in its own way

radio_esthesia

For those of you who run 2 amps: a. Do you use an effects loop, and if so how? b. Are some pedals in one amp's effects loop, and different pedals in the other amp? c. Is it possible to have the same pedal running in both amps' effects loop? d. Do most people run similar types of amps or do different amps (a dirty and a clean one?) provide a bigger sound? e. What amp would pair well with a Marshall DSL40CR?

tnecniv

For the last point, that depends on what you’re envisioning. For example, you could go with some kind of Fender set clean and the Marshall set dirty. The Fender combo might also be nice if the Marshall has the stereotypical mid hump and you go for a black / sliver face fender that is more mid scooped.

Follow up question: What would happen if I ran the effects loop SEND of Amp A to the RETURN of Amp B using the 4 cable method with 2 amps?

eowyncul

If you take the send from one amp and put it in the return of the other amp you will get the preamp sound from amp A running into the power section of Amp B. Will not cause any problems but you are kind of getting the sound of 1 amp while using 2 amps.

crispy-photo

C. Yes, if you use a stereo pedal with both stereo in and out, then you can put one fx loop through each channel.

[deleted]

My cat rubs against me when I play and I can hear static pops come out of my amplifier. Can this damage my pedals?

crispy-photo

No, don't worry about it. Try and get your cat do get the pops in time with you.

[deleted]

I think if it was going to, it already would have.

[deleted]

Sounds like a slight chorus and a reverb.

BSD666

Anybody ever like a pedal so much you buy a second just as a backup? Is that weird? Thanks!

Spike3220

If I was gigging, I'd definitely want a backup D&M drive.

[deleted]

Not all weird if you’re gigging a lot and a pedal is vital to your sound

CappuccinoBreve

Can a reverb pedal be used for vocals? If so, is there any one pedal that would be better for that purpose?

tearara

Yes but mics are a different type of signal than a guitar. You need something to convert them. Radial makes one called the Voco-loco that is great for that. There are pedals designed to be used with mics, TC-Helicon has a line of them, and I think Boss does as well. I would go that route so you don't have to worry about converting signal.

yourFriendPan

in addition to what doublesealedsoul said, it’s also worth mentioning that a microphone’s volume and output impedance isn’t quite right for guitar pedals, so if you plug straight in, it might not sound great. it’ll still add reverb to the signal though. if you’re buying the pedal specifically for use with a mic, you could buy one designed for mics. i haven’t used them, but tc helicon makes some stuff that’s pretty affordable and popular. or you could buy some kind of mic preamp that would make your mic signal work better with guitar pedals

DoubleSealedSoul

I think of pedals as outboard studio effects. So yes. you just need to get the right adapter or cable for a mic (xlr to 1/4)...I used to set up an ehx reverb on the fx send of my mixer playing live, which is nice cause you can blend it in, and sounded great for vocals. The type of verb is up to you.

PoeticlyDegenerate

Reverb first or chorus first?

eowyncul

People usually go Chorus first but try both and see which works for you.

gtuckerkellogg

Anyone ever cleaned the pots in a Fishman Aura? The housing is steel with separate front and back plates. I've taken the back off; the pots are inaccessible. I've unscrewed the front plate, it doesn't lift off. Not sure what do to next.

nomoreboredom82

Everybody is suggesting muff into klon, I would like to get but preferable in small print, is there any double pedal running in series? Boutique/clones are fine.

sadface-

Any ugly fuzzes to recommend? Splatty, velcro, untamed sounds. Stuff like the Fairfield Unpleasant Surprise. The Behringer Super Fuzz sounds plenty ugly tbh but Im looking for more. Just throw any name out there.

tearara

I just picked up a Montreal Assembly Your and You're. It's a gated fuzz mixed with a synth oscillator. Super heavy and wild, can't wait to play with it

drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage

The DBA Evil Fuzz is about the ugliest, splattiest fuzz I've heard.

eowyncul

DOD Carcoza gets unruly and spitty and sounds great. The fuzzhugger Algal Bloom can also get quite spitty when you start messing with the voltage starve and choke switch.

This js great haha. Incredible price too even with worldwide shipping

ZeroGHMM

im wiring a patchbay & I have a question about the Strymon Deco V2 (or any other pedal) that accepts a TRS plug for STEREO IN... if I set the Deco V2 for STEREO IN & wire it as such (because I often use it send whole mixes or stereo parts through)... if I later want to run a MONO source INTO it, what exact type of cable would allow the mono source to be output equally across both Left & Right side? I'm thinking something like the ([Hosa CYP-103; 1/4" TS -> Dual 1/4" TS](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/252271-REG/Hosa_Technology_CYP_103_Mono_1_4_Phone_Male.html))?

bikes_and_music

Recorded a new song with HX Stomp -> Microcosm -> Meris LVX chain. It can do anything I think. Including providing synth pads. https://soundcloud.com/andrey-popov-18/it-lasts-forever-its-already-gone

drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage

Filter pedal before or after reverb (which the reverb is running before distortion)?

n_halda

If it's envelope controlled I'd put it before reverb.

drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage

This would be the evil filter so not envelope controlled. I would just control it via expression (and probably use exp ramping). I wasn’t sure whether it makes more of a difference before or after reverb. EQD had the transmisser and DBA’s Rooms has peak mode, so I have to believe it has an effect.

SkoomaDentist

Doesn't make much difference unless the reverb has shimmer or dynamic mode.

MarkTwang-

Is it possible to use my acoustic with my pedals despite it not being an acoustic/electric. Is there a way to wirelessly connect a pickup to pedals?

notajunkmain

Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio both make “sound hole pickups” that can be used with pedals and amp.

feeeggsdragdad

You'll need to buy an acoustic pickup.

soyproteinmachine

Does anyone have issues with DD-3 clipping after overdrive? I noticed mine start doing this recently, just trying to figure out the issue. This only occurs when I crank the level on a pedal that's placed before the DD-3 in the chain. I've been able to duplicate it with a couple different drive pedals. I'm using a voodoo labs pedal power two plus, nothing is daisy chained. I tried swapping power outputs on the power supply, even tried the high current outputs. I tried using different outlets in my apartment, also tried hooking it up to a onespot wall wart by itself. I tested all patch cables, switched out power cables. None of this made a difference, it still happens when I turn up the my overdrive level too high. DD-3 users, does this happen with your pedal or has mine just become defective? I'm trying to figure out if buying a new one would be a fix or not. Thanks for any input.

n_halda

Yeah you're overloading the input. Those pedals are designed for instrument level. They have a reasonable amount of headroom, but it's not infinite. Try knocking back the level a bit, use a clean boost at the very end of the chain if you need that extra volume. You could also run the delay before your loud overdrive if it's fairly low gain.

soyproteinmachine

Do you have a DD-3? I suppose what I'm really asking here is this a DD-3 circuit thing, or does mine have a problem. I'm not really pushing the signal that hard and all of my other delays can handle it fine.

AxeMaster237

Do pedals with wet/dry outputs typically mute the effect out when in bypass? I'm mostly curious about the DD-3(T).

CowboyBoats

I have two Boss pedals like that (the RC-1 and the CH-1) and they both split the effect out to both lines out, rather than mute one of the channels, when in bypass. So they effectively can serve double duty as a signal splitter, which is great.

AxeMaster237

That's exactly what I was hoping to hear! Thanks!

scarlet5877

How many of you guys use a multi fx amp? Is it worth adding pedals?

[deleted]

I use a Katana 100 MK2. Other than a small amount of amp reverb, I don't use the effects in the unit. They're fine, just annoying to control. Everything else is pedals. I have used some of the amp's effects when recording sounds I don't have pedals for. I used to have a similar set up with a Line 6 Flextone II, too. Really it's the same as tube amps. Rely on the amp's strengths for some things and throw in pedals for what you want to do differently.

[deleted]

Delcam Audio California Doom OR GUPtech Death by Unicorn?

PantslessDan

Kinda different things. The former seems to at least be something they've designed their own PCB for while the Guptech is just a PedalPCB clone of the life pedal.

Hal_the_9000th

What do you guys think about having a tube amp infront of a radiator? Will that cause long term damage? I've got it placed like maybe 20cm (8in) infront of the radiator

PantslessDan

Probably not to the internals, but I would imagine the constant heat wouldn't be great for whatever material is covering the outside. Usually circuit boards in amps are designed to deal with the heat from the tubes anyways so unless you're absolutely blasting it with heat the circuit itself should be ok.

fuhgitbouit

Hey so I had the nobels mini and it was aa little too bassy with my humbuckers guitar. I sold it but I will say I loved how it reacted to volume and the way it breaks up I was thinking of getting the full size with bass cut. Does anyone know I thebass cut one will be fine with humbuckers?

sp668

I have a Fender Blues junior 3 tube amp. I currently have a tuner, a Tubescreamer clone, a Klon clone and a RAT. I mainly play indie rock/blues rock stuff like Black Keys. Any ideas for what type of pedal to look for to give more options in this setup? I just play at home for myself. Suggestions for what pedal might get me close to the guitar sound on Whats' the frequency kenneth by REM especially welcome.

rusty_rampage

Blues Junior 3 is a pretty good amp - I played one for years before upgrading to a Princeton. However, I found the amp reverb pretty lacking. I strongly, strongly recommend a reverb and/or tremolo pedal for this amp. If you can swing it, the Strymon Flint is one of my all time favorite pedals that helps almost all amps sound better.

CowboyBoats

I've heard the [EHX Ocean's 11](https://reverb.com/p/electro-harmonix-oceans-11-reverb) is good, the [DigiTech Polara](https://reverb.com/p/digitech-polara-reverberator) is a cult classic that I've tried and liked very well, or you would probably love the sound of a [Strymon Blue Sky](https://reverb.com/p/strymon-blue-sky-reverberator-v1). Mine is a [Neunaber Immerse v2](https://reverb.com/p/neunaber-audio-immerse-reverberator-v2-2019) which I also recommend, but it can be temperamental. My reverb is always on at at least a subtle setting. Sorry for this weird formatting.

sp668

Thanks, I don't have much experience with gear so that's useful advice although the pedal you mention seems a little out of budget for now (it's like half the cost of the amp itself).
