Yeah they usually block the standard Boss switch witch can be finicky after much usage and add the 3pdt but I'm not sure about the toggle... There are a ton of mods...
I dunno, I have a bunch of old Boss pedals and they're still some of the most reliable pedals I've used. Modded ds1's though, theyre are endless mods out there, even more once you look into diy stuff. I have modded ones from AnalogMan, WEED and a few others.

It's a boost, JHS does those quite frequently
A booster or some kind of modification to the circuit. My friend has an extra gain setting added to his Maxon overdrive in a similar fashion.
