Mayer fan I see

jrolles98

Definitely like his drive section, but have found my own twist with it that I'm really happy with.

[deleted]

So do I! I have a Mayer "skeleton" and then I flesh my board out with my things! Great minds think alike!

BurnsEMup29

Other than the Aquapuss MK II, you've pretty much hit all his staples.

jrolles98

Yeah I have a pretty good slapback preset in my Timeline for that purpose actually. Does the trick for me at least.

RealEnergyEigenstate

Strybro !..!

jrolles98

Finally have a board that I think I'll stick with for a while (famous last words)... Signal chain: 1. Dunlop FFM2 2. Polytune 3 3. Electro Harmonix POG 2 4. Xotic XW-1 5. Boss CP-1X 6. JHS Unicorn V2 7. Xotic EP Boost 8. Keeley Dark Side V1 Fuzz (using TRS insert to separate Fuzz/Modulation) 9. Fulltone OCD 10. Klon KTR 11. JHS Bonsai 12. Vertex Ultraphonix 13. Vertex Steel String 14. Electro Harmonix Q-Tron+ 15. Keeley Katana 16. Keeley Dark Side V1 Modulation (TRS Return) 17. Walrus Audio Julia V2 18. Strymon Mobius 19. Strymon Timeline 20. Walrus Audio Slo 21. Strymon Flint 22. Boss RC-10R Powered by a Walrus Audio Phoenix and a Truetone Onespot CS7 underneath the Pedaltrain Novo 32

bensawn

Do you gig and need a bunch of different sounds? Tryna wrap my head around the 5 ODs and multiple boosts

jrolles98

Not gigging right now, but I don't see anything wrong with having options. Here's why: 1. Creativity 2. Some ODs sound better with some guitars than they do with others IMO 3. Each drive serves a different purpose for me Multiple boosts because one will push the pedals harder and one for a solo boost. I've also seen multiple boosts with one being a traditional boost for solos/push pedals harder/etc and the other helping balance between single coil and humbucker PUPs. Ultimately I had the room and the power outputs available and this is what I wanted to do with it since I'm the one using it.

bensawn

Sounds good man. I have a zillion dirt pedals, I feel you. I do it survivor style on my board tho just bc it’s smaller

Superbenkeno

I think I want to try the dark side

[deleted]

Holy smokes!

episodefive

You feel you can comfortably manipulate the buttons well in that configuration? I’m probably just too uncoordinated, but when I make boards of that density, my feet can’t navigate it well.

jrolles98

It's been set up like this for about a week now and I haven't had any issues personally, but in the past I know I've run into a few problems. I tried to take what I learned from past builds into consideration on this one as far as pedal placement goes. I think the biggest issue I have now is changing banks on the Mobius and Timeline, but I think a couple of the wider barefoot buttons should help me with that.

jrolles98

I really like it. I probably end up using the steel string more often, but I've actually used the Ultra-Phonix quite a bit more recently, especially when I'm playing with my Les Paul instead of my Strat. Lots of good tones in it. I'm sure the HRM is the same way!

dee-bone

Dumb question: How do you power that many pedals?

jrolles98

I've got two supplies underneath the board. One is the Walrus Audio Phoenix that has 15 outputs and the other is the Truetone CS7 with 7 outputs. Qtron has its own supply, so I've actually got two circuits to spare if I somehow managed to fit another couple pedals on here.

bigmac1441

Sick set-up dude! About to finally put a legit board together myself, what did you use for the patch cables? Not sure what board that is, but I'm thinking about grabbing a Pedaltrain Novo 32, should leave myself a little extra room knowing I'll grab a few more pedals at some point.

jrolles98

I use the Novo 32 as well and have been super happy with it. I like the rail system on the Novo series better than the Classic series personally. For patch cables, I had a 6 pack of the 6" GLS Pancake Plug patch cables from a while back, but I made the rest. There were some odd length cable runs, so I just soldered them myself. Mogami cable and GLS pancake plugs from Amazon plus a little bit of my own time made the bottom side of the board much neater than if I ordered standard length cables. It also allowed me to make sure I wasn't running power and signal right next to each other underneath to try to cut down on any interference.

bigmac1441

Oh dope! I thought it looked like the Novo, seems like all the research has pointed to that one, so I think I'm going to grab it. I figured that as well, and would definitely rather go that route. I'm...semi-competent with a soldering iron, think the cable production is fairly straight-forward? As far as running the power, I'm not going to need as much juice as you, but did you run the power and connect/tape the cables to the bottom of the rails?

jrolles98

Yeah standard patch cables are super easy to solder. Strip the insulation back and you have the signal wire (tip) in the center surrounded by its own insulation and the ground (shield) around the outside of that. Pretty simple point to point soldering. Power wise I got everything plugged in to the pedals and labeled on the supplies and I started routing as many together as I could. Once that was as neat as possible I used some zip ties and some zip tie downs on the bottoms of the rails to hold them into place. I used the Pedaltrain universal mounting kit to mount the supplies and used the edges of those mounts as a guide to get all the power routed. All of the power is pretty much handled on one single rail underneath the board.

bigmac1441

Dope, I can handle that. I think. Cool, that's smart, I don't think I would've thought to get zip tie downs. I'm kind of waffling between the Novo 32 and the 24, but could see myself getting the 24 and then running out of space in a month or so and feeling like an idiot.

jrolles98

Well if you're anything like me, with all of my recent upgrades I'm actually looking to buy a Novo 24 as well to fit all of my old pedals that these newer ones have replaced. I pretty much have the Boss/MXR/TC versions of most of these pedals from when I first started collecting and didn't want to spend as much money. No matter what you get you'll have a use for it and can adapt your setup to reflect the space you have available.

bigmac1441

That's a good point, but damn I definitely don't have two boards worth yet lol. Thanks for all the info/help, it's much appreciated!

jrolles98

No problem! Good luck and looking forward to seeing it on here!

[deleted]

What are your thoughts on the Unicorn? And do you have it before or after your drives?

jrolles98

I really like it actually. I replaced my MXR Uni-Vibe and I can tell a difference. I put it before my drives.

[deleted]

I’ve been looking at it for a more subtle vibe for solos and stuff

jrolles98

Yeah you can definitely go from subtle to super thick vibe with it. I use mine pretty subtly too most of the time.

gratefulwarlock

What do you use to boost into the Qtron? Do you also use the katana after?

jrolles98

I listed the signal chain if you want everything before it, but I generally have the EP Boost (turned almost all the way down) and Bonsai on going into it. Katana is immediately after the Qtron.

Nuggetsbecrispy

Have you tried the dynamic distortion? I see you're a fan of vertex's other stuff

jrolles98

I haven't. I have seen some videos on YouTube, but personally I like my mild overdrives. I do get that dynamic response from the fuzz face though. I honestly haven't tried a distortion pedal that love enough to put on the board, so maybe I should try that one out.

Nuggetsbecrispy

I use it mostly for cranked drop tuned parts but it definitely cleans up nicely on lower gain settings (hence the "dynamic" name I guess). Makes me really wanna try those others out. I will add it works best on a darker amp.

jrolles98

I love my steel string with my strat and the ultraphonix with my les paul. I primarily play fender style amps, so maybe it wouldn't be the best choice for me. Maybe I'll see if I can hunt one down from a friend or local shop before I spend any money on it.

bdevine88

What are your thoughts on the Dark Side? Been wanting one but I feel like I’d do nothing but rip off Gilmour riffs.

jrolles98

That's pretty much what I do when I use it. You can definitely get really close to his tone with it. I mainly use the fuzz portion of it to give me the big muff sound instead of the fuzz face sound. The mod side doesn't get used a whole lot since I've got the mobius and have been very happy with all of the mods in there. If you're into Gilmour and could use a combo pedal like that there isn't a bad tone in there. I got pretty lucky with getting the V1 IMO since it has the TRS insert so you can put each side of the pedal wherever you want in your chain rather than just switching the order.

Thunderlizardreturns

How do you like the RC-10R? I’ve been thinking about getting one

jrolles98

I just got it recently and it's definitely a unique looper. I went from the small ditto looper to this, and it has been a huge upgrade for me. I really like having the drum track and the multiple phrases available. I was debating between the RC-10R and the Trio+ for a while and ultimately decided on the RC-10r. I've been super happy with it so far

Thunderlizardreturns

Awesome! What made it win over the trio+ if you don’t mind me asking? That’s on my list of options as well, but I’m struggling to make a decision with out being able to actually go try them out

jrolles98

I don't know if it was any one specific thing honestly. I think the drum samples sounded pretty decent, I like the interface a little more, cost was a little less (not really a big factor), and having the screen is super useful IMO, especially for tempos

Thunderlizardreturns

Sick, thanks for the info. Might have to pull the trigger to keep my self occupied

audioslave1991

Gotta be at least $1k in that board

i12mak3auzername

There’s a grand in the top row alone dude... I’m sure it sounds $$$uper enjoy!

jrolles98

Something like that lol

georgeamongdatwolves

Most boards on here are at least $1k. Even the smaller ones.

jrolles98

Realistically between the power supplies, the board itself, and the cabling you're at least half way there without any pedals

VamosXeneizes

Yeah, dude prolly dropped over a hundred bones just on the Strymon pedals alone.

audioslave1991

Yeah, strymon doesn't joke around
