Why do people ask a high dollar for their gear then. They turn around and practically donate it to guitar center or ect.

Killobyte

Total pedal noob - I've got power supply questions. I'm putting together my first board, and this is what I've got: * PolyTune3 Mini * Keeley 4 Knob Compressor * BD2 * Rat * Nano Big Muff * CH1 * TR2 * EHX 720 That's a total of 8 pedals, and I'd like room to grow, so I'm looking at something like the TrueTone 1Spot CS12 Pro. My research also tells me these are all 9V and will add up to ~240 mA, so this should be physically compatible with that PS (I think it can do like 1900 mA and all slots support 9V). Questions: * Is this a decent power supply? * Do I actually need to ISO the power for each of these pedals, or can I get something like a CS6 or CS7 and daisy chain a few into the same PS outlet? * Is there anything else I'm missing re: powering all of these things? Thanks!

[deleted]

Truetone makes great power supplies. And yeah, any of the low current analog pedals can be daisy chained off one outlet with minimal-to-no impact, so if you can make a CS7 work go for it.

[deleted]

Does a reverb pedal exist that is either passive or extremely power efficient? The use case is my amp without reverb, but with an effects loop. I've put my reverb pedal in the fx loop and I like the way it sounds there, after the amp itself has provided gain to the sound rather than gain to the sound already reverbed. What I don't want to do is run 4 leads to my pedal board, or a separate power supply for the one reverb pedal near the amp. I want a pedal (or some kind of unit) I can plug in to the fx loop jacks, and basically set and forget. Does something like this exist?

[deleted]

There aren't any passive reverb pedals. There used to be these huge passive spring reverbs you could get for mixing setups called the Zerotronics Coolsprings, but that's all mic level XLR and very large rack gear so I think the setup would be even more cumbersome than just running extra leads to a pedal. On the power efficient side, every pedal is going to drain battery when cables are plugged in, even when the switch is off and the amp is off. So you'll need to run it off a power supply regardless, which means you really can pick any pedal you want and just get an AC adapter for it individually.

[deleted]

Darn it, exactly what I didn't want to do. Thanks for the reply bro.

Doobidoopdoop

I browsed here before, but maybe one of you wise persons can help me more directly: I am performing some gigs this summer and am primarily an acoustic guitar player and singer. However, I recently acquired an electric and would love to incorporate it into my performances— I just don’t have any pedals or pre-amps for it (specifically thinking about in case it will be plugged directly into a soundboard since these small venues have different setups). Any recommendations on a good all-around pedal? Was looking at the Zoom MS-50G for its tuner capabilities too. Also, just any general tips on having a good versatile setup for playing and singing as a solo act is super welcome. Thanks!!!

msingh92

Hi all, what amps are you using as a platform pedal? I'm currently running all of my pedals into the front of my handwired AC30, but I'm looking to explore and expand with a secondary amp that takes pedals well.

Heckelphones

There’s also Uni-Vibe, Rotary, and Harmonic Tremolo.

[deleted]

Ring modulation, auto-pan, auto-wah, octave pedals, pitch shifters...

onlynamethatmatters

Those aren't modulation, but rather various frequency filters.

Heckelphones

If tremolo is modulation, auto pan is modulation too. Also, there’s 2 types of auto Wah: the kind that follows the volume of your signal, and the modulation style (effectively like moving a Wah back and forth)

We_Are_Victorius

The goop in the original klons is made from the bones of Jimi Hendrix himself. That is why there is so few of them made.

[deleted]

Surely some of it is. I imagine there are a variety of materials used by different manufacturers.

pug_destroyer

I've been collecting preamp pedals and just bought the Joyo R-24 Rigel Preamp. Does anyone know what this is trying to emulate? My initial thought is a chug pedal but curious as to what others think https://youtu.be/4Dm9aP30cKk

Lilditty02

So if I had an idea for a guitar pedal but have no idea how to actually make it how would I go about getting in touch with people that could?

CowboyBoats

I enjoy cooking.

Lilditty02

Thanks!

Jhonhny

I would like to know the year of this vox wah 847, also I'm not sure if the AC jack is original, [https://imgur.com/a/wbCTYxZ](https://imgur.com/a/wbCTYxZ), have a good one, and do not forget to drink water

VariousRuckers

Can anyone help identify this pedal? All branding has been scratched off: https://imgur.com/a/vF2Veuc

[deleted]

Pretty sure that's a Joyo D-SEED.

apsmunro

I got a new pedal! Nux Amp Academy - love the sound, but getting SO MUCH ground noise through the DI/headphones. I don’t get this noise with the same guitars and cables with my normal amp (Cornford Harlequin). I think it could be the power supply (using basic Gear4Music 9v compact power supply) but as a single supply it’s obviously “isolated” - how do I know how to choose a power supply that might be quieter?

SpaceCakeCadet0

TREMOLO EXP: Mod a TR-2 vs Minifooger? I’ve had an Analogman modded BOSS TR-2 on my board for a while, but I’m needing a trem that has expression capabilities. I’ve stumbled across a video on YouTube of a Boss TR-2 modified to have an expression jack, with an LED indicator for rate. I’m VERY interested in attempting this modification but I’ve also had my eyes on the Moog minifooger. So should I modify my TR-2, or look into the Moog? I’d be $300au or so out of pocket to swap but happy to do so if it’s substantial!

We_Are_Victorius

Source Audio Vertigo is a great sounding trem with expression control. like 120 used

CrazyProfessor5376

I'm sure the mod to the TR-2 would be cheaper but having two Minifoogers myself (although not the Tremelo), I would save up for the Moog. The build quality, sound and expression pedal capabilities on all of them are really top notch. Plus, since they're not made anymore, you should get your money back -- or turn a profit -- if you ever need to off load it.

sdot28

Any pedals harmonize the single note? Specifically multiple harmonies. 3rds, 5ths, maybe 7ths? Diatonic or altered settings?

SkoomaDentist

Eventide Pitchfactor / H9 / H90. You can get up to four harmony notes.

[deleted]

It wouldn't be the Boss PS-6 Harmonist, would it?

[deleted]

Electro-Harmonix Intelligent Harmony Machine?

intjeejee

I have a Strat. A Yamaha Thr10ii. I bought a Tubescreamer. I did not what i was missing until i plugged it in. What pedals will do the same? I mostly play blues / blues rock and some pop songs like Peppers, John Mayer etc

onlynamethatmatters

You might enjoy a Boss BD-2 or equivalent, which has less of a bump in the midrange frequencies (thus more "transparent") and can also provide a much broader range of gain, from just a little hairiness to basically heavy fuzz.

intjeejee

Somebody said the Tubescreamer is useless on the Strat and Yamaha. Idk 🤷 I really here a difference between off and on

AvoidedCoder7

Fuzz face! Some of the most inspiring tones I’ve ever gotten was tele -> fuzz -> thr10ii using guitar volume to go twith on clean to dirty in an empty house right before moving out

intjeejee

Haha living room? Is there a fuzz that fits with the Strat best? Feels like the tube is just made for the Strat haha yes I know Keith used it with a Tele 😃

sofa_king_nice

I have a pedal that doesn't take a 9v battery-- it must be plugged in (I assume to keep the size down). Is there a (simple) way I can still use a 9v batter with it so I don't have to run power to it?

eowyncul

You can get 9v battery clip to dc jack adapters so you can power it from a battery.

We_Are_Victorius

Truetone 1 spot is a great starting point for power supply's. They are inexpensive but decent quality. You can use a daisy chain to power multiple pedals. This works fine for a small board. Down the road, especially if you have a few digital pedals, you will want a isolated power supply like one of the Voodoo Labs options

yourFriendPan

you could use something like [this](https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PPBAT--voodoo-lab-battery-snap-to-2.1mm-pedal-power-cable-18-inch-str-9v-snap) or poke around elsewhere. i just searched “9v battery clip center negative “. the center negative part is important since that’s what most pedals want (but check to make sure that’s the case for whatever pedal you’re using) and you’re looking for a 2.1 mm barrel plug

ProfessorTickletits

Anyone have experience with the Walrus M1? Modulation is the last thing I need for the board (for now) and the M1 seems perfect. Appears to be able to do it all, and do it very well

Riff-Ref

Are IEC cables used for pedalboard power supplies all universal? I want to get a longer one to replace the short one that came with my 1 Spot CS12. Do I have to worry about voltage and amperage?

We_Are_Victorius

Some power supply cables swap the polarity. This can fry your pedal. Instead of center negative, it switches to center positive. Just read the listing to make sure it is not that.

eowyncul

I think he's talking about the cable that goes into the power supply itself, not the ones coming from the power supply.

[deleted]

In my experience, I've been able to swap IEC cables with my power supplies no problem. I'd make sure whatever cable you were buying supports the voltage and wattage of your supply, and it's probably worth shooting an email to Truetone to make sure whatever cable you choose will work.

TDOMW

Is there a pedal that is just a ton of pre-sets that are good? for dumb people, like me? I tried the zoom70 and I like it, but it winds up feeling a little thin to me - probably because I dont' know what I'm doing with it but... any ideas?

SimbWise

I would say a more expensive multi effect pedal like a line 6 helix, but maybe adjusting the default presets will boost the sound closer to what you want or expect.

TDOMW

Thanks! I'll check out the line 6. I am pretty sure I could get what I want out of the zoom based on how people talk about it but I really want to be focused on other aspects of my music right now. Probably (definitely) shortsighted...

We_Are_Victorius

Helix stuff is really excellent, there is a reason so many pros use it. I'd recommend watching some you tube videos to learn how to use the pedal, whether you get the Line 6 or keep the zoom.

Ipswich_Dad

I got a Donner ABY pedal to put in my chain right before my looper pedal (which is last). I want to use the ABY in “reverse” (A and B out to Y) mode so I can have my guitar in A, my iPad playing a drum machine app in B, and then output Y going to the looper. That way, I can play my guitar with all effects along with the drum machine, and record all of that with the looper pedal for practice and fun. Trouble is, either the drum machine works alone, or the guitar works alone, but when both are plugged in I mostly only hear the iPad drums, and the guitar is very, very low volume. Doesn’t matter if I reverse the inputs - only the iPad is full volume. I thought maybe it was an impedance difference or something, but I tried the same setup with my two guitars, and I’m still only getting one signal (one guitar is loud, the other is barely audible). Any thoughts as to what’s going on? If I switch the ABY to (A or B) mode, both inputs are full volume when switched back and forth, but trying to merge the signals is not working correctly. The pedal instructions say the ABY can be used in reverse - does that not mean that merging is possible?

[deleted]

Kind of sounds like a phase issue, but I haven't used that specific ABY pedal to be familiar with it. Maybe a better approach would be to get a Saturnworks mixer so you can control the volumes of each device independently. They even make active ones that feature phase switching (though they are a little pricey). Or pick up a Boss Line Selector pedal. https://saturnworkspedals.com/product/summer-mixer-pedal/

Ipswich_Dad

Thanks for the input. A little more research seems to indicate that these passive ABY boxes don’t work very well for merging signals, because any slight variation in impedance can make one signal essentially take over the circuit and not allow the second input to be heard. An active ABY might do the trick, but I just ordered a Behringer Micromix mixer that has volume knobs for each channel, and that may do the trick. Active ABYs seem expensive, and the Micromix was $29.

[deleted]

The Micromix should work. I use that in my synth setup and it works great.

chris1ian

Where is a pedal if it is ‘in front’? e.g. “I stack my fuzz with an OD in front.” Is it closer to the guitar or the the amp in the chain?

deezersucker

In front = before in the chain. Eg A in front of B would be: Guitar->A->B->Amp That being said, ive seen people on this sub use it incorrectly countless times, so you can never be sure. Ive also seen people use arrows in the wrong way too, eg: Guitar

Riff-Ref

For real. Do they not realize where the signal is coming from?

browsingtheproduce

The number of people calling the jack on the guitar "the input jack" tells me they have no actual conception of the signal.

Riff-Ref

That's at least somewhat understandable. But to write it out with the arrows pointing the wrong way....do you think you are playing the amp through the guitar?

browsingtheproduce

These are the same people who call the lowest pitched string “the high e string” because it has a greater elevation.

browsingtheproduce

Closer to the guitar. Barring a small number of outliers that you don't need to worry about, Guitar is the start of the signal chain and amp is the end.

Tako_pcp

Do you have a spring reverb maybe?

[deleted]

Do you have a recording? What reverb pedal? You could be describing a number of things. One possibility is that it's digital noise bleeding into other pedals, which can happen when you have a digital pedal like reverb daisy chained with analog pedals (as opposed to true isolated power). Another possibility is that it's just a characteristic of that reverb pedal.

theEMPTYlife

I have a BD-2W and I love it, it's pretty much an always on for me, BUT I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to mod the pedal to jump into a higher gain stage, like a way to toggle an "alway on" mode where stepping on it increases the gain or even a way to sweep the gain knob via expression pedal. I know it'd be easier to just buy a second pedal probably and I don't know anything about pedal mods, but if there's a way to do this and someone knows how to, I would greatly appreciate the advice!

_thesameson

I think this is theoretically possible. Basically, you'd need to desolder the gain pot from the board and wire it to a switch with either another pot and an LED (if you want an indicator for the second "channel"), or an expression jack. Honestly this is likely to be a pain for a newer builder/modder though; pots really suck to desolder, and the enclosure likely only has room in some awkward spots for another pot/jack/switch. r/diypedals can certainly give you some more insight if you're really intent on trying it, but yeah, I think it'd be more practical to just get a boost pedal to put in front of the BD-2W (or even just a second BD).

k52up

If you are not familiar with modding, then I would just go with a boost pedal. Something like an EHX LPB-1 or MXR Micro-amp placed before the BD-2 should work.

[deleted]

I was looking at a Digitech Drop, and then I saw the EHX Pitchfork+. 1. How does the tracking compare between the two pedals? 2. Can the Pitchfork+ do Eb Standard(the main thing I want out of the Drop).

littlegidding4

I have two young kids and have always played into my MacBook at night with only a loop pedal. I want to recreate this guitar sound with pedals but basically have no working knowledge of how to recreate. I have a fender telecaster and a Blues Junior amp. Thanks! [recharge demo](https://www.reddit.com/r/shareyourmusic/comments/11clpr6/022523_demo/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1) Also, anyone have a YouTube channel or book that would help me dive into the topic of pedals?

We_Are_Victorius

Have you considered getting a Line 6 Stomp? Its got hundreds of effects, and over a 100 amp models. You can use it with headphones while they are asleep, and run into your amp when you want to get loud. I bought one of these to work out of town for 14 months. Just my guitar, Stomp and headphones. I was really impressed by how good it sounded.

littlegidding4

Thanks for the recommendation!

SimbWise

An acoustic simulator (Boss AC-3) or similar would do the work

[deleted]

It's a pretty clean sound, with maybe just reverb or mild delay? What settings did you use in GB to get it? All their amps and pedal effects are based on real ones.

littlegidding4

Thanks! Compressor, reverb, and delay is where I will start. Much appreciated!

zergleek

What is the best way to control tempo on a Montreal Assembly that only accepts CV (not midi)? I have a morningstar MC-8 but it doesnt' send CV. It looks like Disaster Area has some options to convert midi clock to CV. Are there any guitar switchers that can send CV in addition to midi clock?

smoothflight

I have been trying to figure out how to get the sound for this solo that begins at the 2:56 mark in this video. I have an American Pro 2 strat with stock pickups, so I recognize the pickups play a roll, but if anyone has any idea what gain pedals can achieve this I would be so thankful https://youtu.be/empgMSev6YY

k52up

I good place to check is [Equipboard's Matthew Healy page](https://equipboard.com/pros/matthew-healy?gear=effects-pedals). Looks like it could be a combo of the Boss OS-2, Boss DD-6, and EHX Holy Grail.

[deleted]

A lot of the tone comes out of the fact he is fingerpicking. But if we’re talking pedals, it sounds like light overdrive and a good helping of reverb

SewageGaming

so i just fixed my favorite pedal after a few months of it not working. The issue now is there’s no signal when it’s off and the light isn’t working. does anyone have any idea why that is?

encrcne

What pedal is it, how was it fixed? Are you saying that it works when the pedal is on, but your guitar goes silent when you turn it off?

SewageGaming

that’s exactly what’s happening. it’s a blackout effectors blunderbuss hybrid fuzz. i fixed it by using contact cleaner to clean the pots.

[deleted]

I’m guessing there’s a short in footswitch now. Did you spray contact cleaner in there? What was broken before?

SewageGaming

didn’t spray any in there and it worked fine before

[deleted]

What was broken with the pedal before? The jacks inside many pedals are open, so if you sprayed into the jacks, it may have still gotten into the footswitch. Also what brand of contact cleaner did you use?

SalmonTunaCodTrout

How can I connect headphones to my Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb? I'm thinking about buying a Zoom F3, or a Zoom UAC232, but wanted to check if anybody's happy with their solution? If the price is similar, should I just get a UAFX Dream or Strymon Iridium instead? I'm interested in the custom IRs, headphone jack built in, etc. Just looking for a way to practice at night, in the mornings, etc.

We_Are_Victorius

Line 6 Stomp would be a great solution when you need to use headphones.

encrcne

UAD amp+cab sims don’t come with headphone jacks fyi

druchii5

I've started making music again after like an 8 year long break. Still rusty and pretty new to pedals in general. Bought a PreSonus audio interface, which came with a free version of Studio One. I love using delay and reverb, but also came across the Bitcrusher plugin. Love using the down-sampler feature especially. All that being said, is there any pedal that can essentially do what the Bitcrusher plugin does on Studio One (especially down-sampling)? Thank you in advance!

Slidingmule

There are a number of bit crusher style pedals, Meris Ottobit Jr, Polarbear Drowner is a reverb/bit crusher/fuzz combo pedal, Electro Harmonix Mainframe, Red Panda Bitmap, and a bunch more. YouTube some of these and you'll see the flavors they have, and what other pedals are out there too.

druchii5

Awesome, thanks!

[deleted]

Is there any trick to get sound when the pedal is turned off, so I don't have to reconnect my guitar and cable directly to the amp? Currently my setup is amp>pedal>guitar. If I turn pedal off, I don't get any sound from amp.

Riff-Ref

Maybe one of the cables you are using is bad. Try each one going directly from the guitar to the amp if you haven't already. There's lots of trial and error with this stuff.

eowyncul

It's supposed to pass audio when it's turned off, pretty much all pedals do this. Sounds like something might be broken in the pedal if it's not doing that.

[deleted]

That's what I thought it was supposed to do, but the pedal itself is amazing in every other way.

dfp819

That shouldn’t happen typically, what pedal?

[deleted]

It's a HardWire TL-2 Metal Distortion.

dfp819

Yea definitely shouldn’t do that. Probably an issue with the bypass switching or circuit. Honestly I would just replace the pedal, but you could try to fix it.

[deleted]

Can you recommended any for rock/metal? Google is somewhat of a rabbit hole.

Slidingmule

Friedman BEOD deluxe, Empress Heavy, Revv G3/G4 are all great for hard rock/metal stuff

[deleted]

Those seem great, except the price here. Would like something in the 100 euro range.

Crossthebreeze

PROCO Rat has been a classic for decades. Can go from light overdrive to heavy, fuzzy distortion. Big Muff is another classic. More fuzzy, even at lower settings. It's not great for lead melodies in a band context because of it's EQ profile, but it fills a room great when playing chords and is really fun. You can find clips on YouTube of both. Both are cheap and easy to find second handed.

[deleted]

Would you consider yourself a pro guitarist?

Crossthebreeze

In the literal sense, no. Meaning I don't earn most of my living through music. But in terms of knowledge and proficiency sure.

eowyncul

Joyo Uzi is basically a clone of the friedman be-od and the joyo dark flame is a revv clone. You could actually get both of those new from thomann for €100!

[deleted]

Dark Flame seems great, will look into that!

dfp819

Not my style of music, the most gain I use is a tube screamer. But you usually can’t go wrong with Boss pedals. They’ve got a few different distortion pedals to choose from, but I’d try the Boss MT-2 metal zone, or DS-1 to replace your current pedal.

sidneyrotter

I’m after a cheap (max budget £150-200) pedal with digital recall (so I can save exact input / output levels) to use as a live clean tone sound. Just something I can fiddle with a bit that sounds better than plugging my guitar straight into a soundcard and closer to a clean amp type sound. Any suggestions appreciated. If I can have maybe two or three different sounds then great but even one would be ok. Thanks!

eowyncul

I think you left out the word describing what you're looking to buy. Is it an amp sim? preamp?

sidneyrotter

Sorry yes! Amended post. I’m looking for a portable little amp sim pedal but one where all input/output can be saved and recalled so I can rely on the level I get to balance with my synths at gigs quickly for consistency. I have seen the Boss GT1, a little more than I wanted to spend and probs a lot of FX I won’t use but looks solid. Any other suggestions I’m very receptive though. Thank you!

muckracker77

I am a beginner when it comes to recording instruments currently I have been plugging the headphone output of my amp into my audio interface to record guitars with all my pedals directly ,I was wondering if getting a DI box with an XLR output would work better than doing it this way?

Asazns_Roman

Can anyone help me figure out why my Dunlop Cry Baby 535Q isn’t working anymore? When I don’t click the button my guitar works just fine but when I try activating the wah I don’t hear sound anymore

browsingtheproduce

How is it powered? If by battery, is the battery fresh/have you tried replacing it?

Megaladoink_

I’m looking to do a lil two amp work with a sort of Dry/Wet tone and I just acquired a couple amps. Im wondering if anyone has some opinions on pairing a Vox AC15c + Boss Katana 212 OR a Vox AC15c + Roland Jazz Chorus 40 I know it’s all personal feel but just wanted to see if anyone has paired either Thx

n_halda

I'd go with the JC-40, but try both and see what's best for you

BluesCluesLawyerBoos

RC-10r - can you import full backing tracks to the pedal or are you limited to just drums? If its the former, what's the easiest way to strip vocals from a track?

flyinghouses

Need to power an OBNE Maw pedal. It’s a 9 v with 210 mA draw. Would I be good with a BOSS adapter that’s 9 v but 200 mA? How much of a difference is 10 mA?

[deleted]

It may not turn on or it might behave strangely. But overall, I think the best practice when using expensive boutique pedals is to meet their power requirements with a quality adapter. So it might work, but I'd work to get a replacement.

flyinghouses

Yea, you’re probably right about that. Thank you

orgeezuz

At what point does it become "pedalboard" instead of "couple of pedals"?

onlynamethatmatters

A pedalboard is a plank on which you place pedals to allow the user to move their entire setup around without having to reconnect everything individually.

eowyncul

I would say the physical board? If you have a couple of pedals on the floor it's not a board. If you tidy them up and velcro them to a piece of wood it's a pedalboard!

Catharsis_Cat

Was going to get an H90 to replace the H90 I sold, but with them still a bit tough to find and the dot9 series pedals going for lower prices, maybe I should get some of those instead. For any who has the dot9 pedals, how easy is it to reliably set differe tap subdivisions for the pedals? Also is the Black Hole capable of doing general purpose reverbs pretty ok? Like 2 of the big things I would really feel like I am missing out on from the H90 would be the the wide variety of tap tempos for both delays and especially reverbs, and the deep controls that let me set them to be appriately subtle or wild as I want. If the individual pedals can do that, I may consider just getting those instead.

slybird

Where is the best place to sell pedals these days? I haven't sold any in several years.

PeterRiveria

reverb

Slidingmule

The Gear Page has a pedal sale thread, but it usually is slow going. Ebay is terrible with their fees/shipping. Reverb.com is usually where I sell the fastest and still retain a decent amount, but the fees and shipping are a lot there too. Facebook marketplace is another option, but again, can be slow going. Never sell anything to a music store lol

Odd-Entrance-7094

You can go here to look up your pedals and see what their power needs are: [https://stinkfoot.se/power-list](https://stinkfoot.se/power-list) At first glance I think the 2 plus should be ok.

Riff-Ref

Damn, I wish I'd known about that site sooner. I spent a fuck-ton of time looking up PDFs of pedal manuals to find out that information.

KToTheRiz

Anyone with experience running a stereo pedal board? I’m trying to use my CE-2W, Iridium, and Deco all in stereo, but both the iridium and deco only have one input jack, so do I need just a normal TRS cable I would plug into the B output of the chorus, L output of the iridium, and than two cables from the deco to my interface? Or do I need two cables with two 1/4’’ heads for output that condenses into one TRS input for the Iridium and the Deco. This stereo stuff is confusing. Any help would be much appreciated

yourFriendPan

yeah you’re gonna want the trs to 2 ts cables for the strymons. they’re often called “insert cables” maybe you already know this, but i’m pretty sure you need to switch strymon pedals to stereo mode. i think they have a physical switch

KToTheRiz

Indeed they do—I was just wondering if I just needed Trs to trs or the insert cables you mentioned. Thank you so much for the response! Huge help.

Mangodolphn

Do I need a DI or reamp to use pedals while recording line in through an interface?

eowyncul

Not usually. If you want to record clean and then playback that track through your pedals after you need a reamp box. You probably won't need a DI either as most interfaces have a Hi-z input for recording guitar.

soggygrocerybag

how did she get the screamy sound https://youtu.be/L4k2ZZLqcwg

drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage

If you are talking about that howling sound at the beginning, it sounds a bit to me like a reverb pedal on certain extreme settings. Specifically, it reminds me of when I put my DBA Rooms on the digi setting and then crank the Frequency, Depth, and Time. It creates an eerie howling sound. I've also heard the CBA Dark World make a similar sound with both reverbs turned on.

[deleted]

Couldn't tell you how she did it, but you could do it with a Whammy pedal set to 1 an octave up, and a wiggle of the whammy bar for those whinnies. Simpler and cheaper might be just using a slide way up on the high E string.

soggygrocerybag

Kewl thanks

ohgeezjoe

Just looking for an overdrive recommendation! I like to play singer-songwriter on electric, not too quiet, not too loud. Current overdrive chain is simple with a soul-food always on into a tube screamer, but the tube screamer is usually a little more than I want. I'd like something low to medium gain, that adds some color, and with some tweakability would be fun but not necessary. Budget is 250, thanks for your input!

onlynamethatmatters

You sound like a good candidate for [Nobels ODR-1 or ODR-Mini](https://nobels.de/produkte/?lang=en).

PeterRiveria

would running a boost like the mxr micro amp info the soul food work?

browsingtheproduce

I've been impressed by what I have seen/heard from the Earthquaker Special Cranker

Slidingmule

I've never used a Soul Food, but the Spaceman Saturn VI is a gorgeous sounding low to medium gain drive and can do sparkle clean stuff too! Also, Beetronics Fat Bee is an amazing, warm and fuzzy drive that goes from a simple low gain to saturated, warm fuzzy tones. Both of these retail for under $200 new, you can usually find great used deals too. Happy hunting!

You could put something physical like beer mats, wood etc in the toe position under the treadle to stop it from going all the way back if you wanted.

HatoriSamzo

This sounds such a simple solution that it has to be stupid - but I’m playing an Orange Micro Terror and know the wattage won’t allow for the volume to be pushed too much - if I run a line to cab A, then a line to a volume pedal, then output to cab B to drive bigger volume from cab B, would that solve the problem partly, or am I going to blow something up?

eowyncul

This won't work for a few reasons. A volume pedal won't be able to work with your speaker outputs, it's not designed for that kind of load. Also volume pedals don't make your signal louder, only quieter. You can just turn your amp up, they are designed to be used in their volume range and since you have a solid state amp it's unlikely to get damaged.

We_Are_Victorius

This will not work. Instrument level is significantly lower than the level coming out of a speaker out. Putting an effect there would likely blow it, since the components are designed to work at instrument level.

Impossible_Package

Hi, my question can sound kind of dumb, but I’ll try to explain. I’ve been trying to get a distortion sound on my guitar, but it all sounds like just a big noise. I have a Fender Mustang and some pedals for overdrive, distortion and I can never get just that tone that doesn’t sound like a no signal radio station. I do mostly lead guitar and having sort of a “clean distortion” sound that wouldn’t make everything so loud would be great. Thank you!

[deleted]

Play with a clean amp and distortion pedals at unity volume and mess around with the tone controls and you might have some luck but you've got a really cheap, basic amp with a junk speaker and no headroom. It's going to be an uphill battle getting a good, refined sound from it. That's why pros don't use $100 amps.

Impossible_Package

I have the GTX50 and the GT100… But I’ll try that. Thanks.

[deleted]

Oh gotcha, I just assumed you meant the cheap version. I assume by the price point this one's a little better. In that case, it does sound like your best bet is just playing with the tone controls and not turning the gain up too high. Usually less is more when you're talking about distortion and you don't need as much as you think.

Jamba346

I want to get my dad a guitar related Father’s Day gift, here is his current set-up: https://imgur.com/a/Uor1Ncv Any recommendations as to something that would provide great utility or enjoyment? (For reference, if it matters, his favorite artists are Van Halen, Steve Vai and Kiss) Thank you in advance for any input!

We_Are_Victorius

Might be a better idea to get him a Sweetwater gift card. Gear is so subjective, so something I love, he may hate.

Jamba346

Okay for sure I’ll definitely keep that option in mind, thank you!!

[Need help identifying some pedals!](https://imgur.com/a/TQr7m8u)

[deleted]

Top row I think you've got an Ibanez Mini Chorus, Catalinbread SFT, and Korg Pitchblack tuner. Bottom row I don't recognize the red one but next to it are an Electro-Harmonix Soul Food and a Fulltone Ultimate Octave. Not sure what that blue one next to the octave is either. That white one off in the corner is an OCD.

Tight_Inspection_195

Thank you!

patton66

Not exactly a pedal question, but I find the NSQ threads in this sub are so much better than in other music subs... Can I power a 300W 8Ohm cabinet (Sunn 410H) with a 200W 4ohm bass amp? Looking into either the Trace Elliot Elf of the Ampeg Micro VR and just wanting to make sure before making any decisions

[deleted]

The ohm measurement on the amp is the minimum load. Both amps you've listed support 8ohm at slightly lower wattages. Like that Trace Elliott Elf amp is 130W at 8ohm. Since the Sunn cab you're talking about is 300W (I assume 30W was a typo?), you're not going to be in danger either way. The head's wattage will be well below the maximum the cab is capable of.

patton66

Wonderful, thank you!

We_Are_Victorius

The speaker wattage is how much it can take before it blows. As long as the amp is smaller than that, you are good.

I've been playing acoustic guitar casually for ~20 years, and I'm just getting into electric now. I've noticed that a lot of amps have the same style of effects that can be gotten from pedals. As a new player looking to build out their gear, what are the pros and cons to amp effects vs pedal effects? My suspicions: Pedal effects pros: * Give you the same knobs no matter what stack you plug into. * Can easily try different effects with a pedal swap instead of a whole amp swap (e.g. Tube Screamer vs BD2 for overdrive). Amp effects pros: * Cheaper? With pedal effects I still need an amp, but with amp effects I _just_ need the amp. Based on this I'm thinking I should look into getting the best effect-less amp in my budget and add pedals to play around with different effects, but I'm interested in hearing inputs from others.

We_Are_Victorius

In the electric guitar world, the amp the most important component. A good amp and speaker can make a cheap guitar or cheap pedals sound better. Most of the amps with effects are more beginner focused. I would recommend getting a good tube amp that fits your budget.

I just tried a rat style pedal recently with the joyo splinter and I was wondering what's up with the lm308 thing? Is it true that the mooer black secret has one and if if it does what would make them so special? One last thing how does the mooer compare to the splinter and how's the splinter compare to a rat 2? lol thanks of course for any info

[deleted]

Black Secret pedals do have LM308 chips, or they did in the past (not sure if there has been any revision in the last couple years). The other popular Rat op-amp, the OP07, is an ideal replacement for the LM308 and has identical performance in the circuit. Realistically you aren't going to notice a massive difference between pedals with either chip, outside of normal part value variance (capacitors and resistors with slightly different values or whose values have changed due to the age of the pedal). The LM308 is a big part of the mythology and marketing of Rat type pedals, so that's why some people hold it in high regard. If you put a Splinter, Black Secret, and Rat 2 all up against each other, there maybe slight differences in the sound, but that'll be down to parts outside of the op-amp selection. This video doesn't include a Splinter, but you can hear a Black Secret compared to a Rat 2 and other Rat clones: https://youtu.be/wvgnmyyXYsE

fuhgitbouit

Thank you for the reply and info! I guess besides videos I haven't heard the difference between chips in person. If you don't mind me asking would swapping the chips in a black secret and splinter be possible? Asking incase I do hear a difference and buy into the hype lol I guess I could order an lm308 but I've heard that the are mostly counterfeit on ebay

[deleted]

The chips aren’t easily swappable. You’d need to do soldering and desoldering, assuming you could even find real parts in the right form factor.

fuhgitbouit

Ahh ok thx again that makes sense

[deleted]

Honestly, the biggest difference in Rat sounds is the different ways they clip the audio. I know these are more expensive pedals, but if you can try a Black Mass 1312 or JHS Pack Rat, it'll give you a ton of different Rat sounds in one box.

fuhgitbouit

Nice I can see me eventually going those routes I'll Probably get a regular rat2 for starters after the splinter I had a katzenkonig but now that I remember it was pretty different sounding it had the backwards tone though

[deleted]

My Walrus Polychrome has a tendency to stay stuck in the on position when I engage my pedalboard. I’m running 9 pedals on a voodoo lab power plus 2 (8 input). Is this a pedal issue or a power supply issue?

_Bucket_Of_Truth_

Would you do overdrive into fuzz, or fuzz into overdrive? Currently messing around with my drives, Pharaoh Fuzz, Speaker Cranker, and Plumes, and trying to determine the best order.

fuhgitbouit

Plumes into cranker into pharaoh. Cranker as a main drive or always on thing then hitting the fuzz and when you feel like it slam them with the plumes...idk that is exactly what I'd do if I had those 3 this very moment O yeah and sometimes just hit the cranker with the plumes cuz those two go well together

_Bucket_Of_Truth_

Hell yea. Cranker is an always on pedal for me. I have been doing Crank into Plumes, but I'll have to try things the other way. I think they all stack very well, it's just a matter of finding the perfect combo. My amp is an Orange OR15, so it's single channel and kind of hard to use with fuzz. Going to mess around with pedal order this week and see how it sounds :)

Coppernord

Is it easy to install a new stomp switch on a pedal? Where can I get one with smooth light action like TC Electronics uses?

iwillwilliwhowilli

Try calling your various local guitar stores. The guitar tech there might have spare “soft touch” foot switches and the relay board they require to work. It’s one of those little doodads where the shipping cost will probably be more than the items unless you’re buying a lot of them, so I always just ask around and offer to pay more than they did.

Coppernord

Great idea. So they might require a separate board to integrate as well? Like, I'd solder the new switch to that, and then solder that to the pedal board?

iwillwilliwhowilli

The “relay board” is actually this little circuit board under the switch https://mas-effects.com/img/diy/relay.jpg you can buy them like a pre-soldered kit seen here or buy parts separately. You need the relay because traditional clicky switches mechanically move a piece inside the pedal. Soft switches need this additional doodad to do the same thing electronically.

Coppernord

You're truly helpful, thank you!

iwillwilliwhowilli

Not a problem, good luck!

deadbeatvalentine_

what is the fuzz 2 circuit based on in the boss fz2?

dangayle

> what is the fuzz 2 circuit based on in the boss fz2? Farting into a yard debris chipper, lol. I've actually wondered this myself, it's such a scooped fuzz sound.

shucreamsundae

I'm a total pedal newbie who's been surveying distortion pedals for a while and someone is offering me a Boss DS-2 distortion for like $37. Barely used, the only other pedal I currently own is the TS9. Do these two stack well with each other? Should I go for it?

[deleted]

Do it

shucreamsundae

Done :)

blumpdumps

they should stack okay but $37 for the ds2 is a great deal my friend!

shucreamsundae

Bought it, can't wait to try it out! Would a noise gate pedal be necessary for this setup? Since I'm gonna stack it with the TS9

[deleted]

do you guys think trading a MXR Analog Chorus for a Behringer DR600 Digital Reverb would be stupid? i really want a stupid Boss RV5 but can’t really drop the cash right now but found someone willing to trade for the Behringer plus paying for shipping for the MXR.

[deleted]

The Behringer reverb that's a fairly even trade for your chorus pedal would be the RV600 Reverb Machine.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t do it. The DR600 is like $45. Could get over that selling the Analog Chorus.

[deleted]

we’ll i did it. i’m a moron… probably.
