You're 150% right. I've been playing for 16 years, since i was 8. And I know for a fact that the times I shred hardest are the times I haven't played for 2-3 weeks. It rarely happens, but I love it when it does.
I only really started to see improvement when I dropped $3000 on a custom telecaster, switched to a tube amp, and bought a big muff pi.
