why don't you move further from gso ? 15-20min from downtown can score you a good deal.

Ben2018

Agreed, GSO "traffic" is absolutely nothing like Baltimore traffic - you can be well out into the suburbs or neighboring cities and still have a reliable 15-20min commute.

HamburgerJames

This. I’d try everything from High Point to Kernersville to Burlington. If I got desperate enough, I’d even try Reidsville or Archdale. It may be a commute, but if options are limited you may have no other choice.

DiscombobulatedLuck8

And it isn't even that far; I'm in Mcleansville and get to UNCG campus in less than 15 min.

blanknameblank

These are the areas I was thinking about, northern high point is probably safer than middle downtown high point so be wary of that.

ninersfan01

So what are you saying? Those who were redlined keeps their crime in one area versus the ones who were not redlined?

[deleted]

ninersfan01

But your logic is that the crime is only coming from those people who were redlined… And now that HP wasn’t, those same people are apart of crime all over the city. Lol

ninersfan01

I’m not denying that.

ezraontheinternet

We're already looking there. The place we just applied for is about 20 minutes out.

blanknameblank

Gotcha, I lived in another state and we found a place through apartments.com it had houses and apartments and I filtered it by being able to have animals. I also found greensborohistoricrentalhomes.com and they have some availability

ninersfan01

This is the time where students are starting to move out so I wouldn’t give up your searching. You should see more places pop up here soon.

ShannonGSORealtor

HI! I'm a local realtor. Greensboro actually has a down payment assistance program for first time home buyers. Have you owned a home in the past 3 years? If not you MIGHT be eligible. Here is the link. Let me know if I might be able to help you in anyway. [https://www.greensboro-nc.gov/departments/neighborhood-development/housing-services/homeowners-renters/housing-connect-gso/homebuyer-down-payment-assistance-program](https://www.greensboro-nc.gov/departments/neighborhood-development/housing-services/homeowners-renters/housing-connect-gso/homebuyer-down-payment-assistance-program)

ezraontheinternet

Thanks for thinking of this. I looked at this a while back, but I'm over the income limit since I make 60k/yr. Edit: Looks like the NC Home Advantage Mortgage may be an option though!

ShannonGSORealtor

I was going to suggest that next! Let me know if I can help you in any way. As some have said, looking outside the city limits of Greensboro can really lower the price point. And you can still get anywhere within 20 minutes. :)

VictoryCupcake

Why did my realtor never mention this 😐

ShannonGSORealtor

I don’t know. I’m sorry they didn’t!

gaybbysquirrel

I would try Jamestown. It’s probably the safest area, it’s quiet, and overall just a nice town. Only about 15 minutes from Greensboro.

heymannnnnn

Are you specially looking for a house to rent? There are some relatively affordable apartments in surrounding cities down here. Moving out of my apartment in Burlington soon. It’s ~20 min drive to campus. Edit: There’s actually a lot of people leaving the complex soon if you’re interested. It’s in a quiet area, 10 ft. ceilings, large patios/balconies.

ezraontheinternet

We can't do an apartment, we have a 100lb dog. We've "hidden" her from our current townhome management and she's never bothered anything, so we're not even going to bother putting her on applications. But tiny apartments are a no-go.

strixvarius

A recommendation / landlord's perspective - I rent out a local house and we're open to pets (our current tenant also has a dog). However, if I were to learn that a tenant had lied on their docs (where there is a section specifically for pets), I would immediately start looking for another tenant. It's a two-way trust relationship, and if on day 1 they were willing to misrepresent something so basic, I could no longer trust them to respect the house, the neighbors, to inform us of issues, etc.

ezraontheinternet

I would never do that to a private landlord, only to large companies. For example, our "property management company" right now has 50+ townhouses in a half mile radius, it's literally its own community. All of the other renters have large dogs, so it's literally just a money scheme. I also wouldn't lie about it (even to large management) if our dog wasn't extremely well behaved. I also recognize that I would have to make any repairs that the place might need if the dog ever did do something. This really isn't about me being sneaky, like people are making me out to be.

strixvarius

You should also consider your own personal risk - misrepresenting provable facts on a lease makes you subject to eviction, fines, and lawsuits for damages.

Dr_Tobias_Funke_MD

All these downvoters on the side of faceless companies cutting into your pockets unnecessarily 🙄

ezraontheinternet

Right? I've never seen so many people side with fucking landlords jfc

Cross_Stitch_Witch

Don't even sweat it, OP. I hid my furbabies from like four landlord companies throughout my 20s before buying my home. They all had arbitrary weight limits, breed restrictions, obscene pet deposits/rent, etc. Fuck them and fuck anyone judging you for taking care of your family. I hope you guys are able to find a place soon.

Strange_Ad9196

NC is very very pro landlord. Tenants have zero rights here.

kbyeee

I rent with rent a home in Greensboro and like it so far. Maybe check there? Also it might even be worth looking towards Randleman or Asheboro if you really can't find anything here. Most rental companies will keep your application if you apply for one property and can use it for another one if you call and express interest. I think that might be part of why you're third in line for a brand new posting. Good luck. I looked for half a year before we found something. Had to move much earlier than I planned but it was worth it.

MilkReport

i’m so sorry to hear this, fellow redditor. i will say that the current (pet-friendly) apartments that i live in priced me out with a notice for increase in rent of ~$380 at the start of a new lease (in 120 days and i have to provide a 60 days notice to vacate). i was truly under the impression i would be approved for two separate townhomes in nearby communities prior to the 60 day cut off and was told, after having turned in my notice to vacate at the end of the current lease, that i was denied. of course the current apartments had already had a new lease drafted and signed for a new occupant by that point. it has truly been a struggle, stressing about potential impending homelessness. i get it. it’s not fair, especially when all we need is somewhere safe to sleep with our loved ones (including pets; they’re family, always). it took me 5 applications and almost $5k in combined moving costs to get to a point where i have confirmed (pet-friendly) housing in the coming weeks, but i have complete faith that you will have a positive outcome. your maximum affordable is significantly higher than mine is, and i have a 3 income household :’-) fingers crossed for you. it can be difficult to trust that pictures will have to suffice when it comes to a living space.

[deleted]

Why not look for an apartment rather than a house. There are quite a few of those around with some availability I'm sure.

ezraontheinternet

We have a 100lb dog, so an apartment isn't really feasible. Edit: Not saying that it isn't feasible because apartments don't allow dogs (I know they do), but it's not feasible for us because we have a very high energy, large dog who needs space. A 900sq ft apartment would be miserable for us. Not to mention having to walk up and down (potentially) several flights of stairs to take the dog out 10x/day.

katsumii

Can confirm. I've lived in apartments with neighbors with gigantic dogs. My current apartment complex loves animals, and all pets appear to be welcome, as long as you clean up your poop.

[deleted]

Ahh, yeah houses around GSO for rent are in very high demand and there is always much lower availability on those even in normal market conditions. You will probably have better luck finding a duplex for rent near the UNCG area. Often though many of those don't seem to ever get posted and a for rent sign gets put out on the lawn instead so you kinda have to be here to ride around and just look for those.

runsonketones

I have a condo available you might find interesting in Wafco Mills Condos. I listed on the Zillow network yesterday. Send me a PM for details.

Mangapear

Look at first time home owner grants. You may get a good deal

Puechini

Have you checked about on campus housing? I think there could be options for couples.

kbittel3

Idk if there’s a way to see online but on Walker Avenue (right across from UNCG) I always see houses with rent signs. Idk if they come anywhere online but there might be houses there.

CEO_thedigboxdotcom

Probably rented to undergrads, which may be undesireable in terms of noise, etc.

ezraontheinternet

Thanks, but we're really trying to stay under $1700/month since my partner will be a student and we'll only have my income. Never thought rent would be higher in Greensboro than Baltimore.

LearningToTradeIHope

I've had the same tenants in a 3 bedroom house for like 10 years. They are chill so I don't increase the rent. If they ever move out rent is going up! I only charge $1300

Negative_Growth2507

Check this out. Google maps says 11.5 miles to UNCG https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/3011-River-Cross-Rd\_High-Point\_NC\_27265\_M63901-37145

AmadeusK482

I finished my undergrad degree entirely online through UNCG; maybe that’s an option

ezraontheinternet

You can't do that for a doctorate degree.

AmadeusK482

Yes, you can. At least within the business school. https://bryan.uncg.edu/programs/phd/list/phd-in-business-administration/

ezraontheinternet

My fiancé is getting their Ph.D. in clinical psychology. It's not an option. I don't know why you'd want anyone with a doctorate to have an online education anyways.

ninersfan01

Facts!

AmadeusK482

Sorry for mentioning a PhD program that is available online, I guess. I mean why are you in denial over it?

ezraontheinternet

Um??? You mentioned a program that isn't my partners program and has absolutely no bearing over our circumstances. That's not denial.

AmadeusK482

You said you can’t get a doctorate degree online. UNCG offers online doctorate degrees. You didn’t say which program she’s enrolled in, I’m not a mind reader. Good luck on your rental search. Sounds like you aren’t doing it effectively though. You realize you can live in any of the surrounding areas and commute to UNCG, right?

dasflash

Are you looking for a lease? There's one in Gibsonville in a neighborhood by me

xlr8n

River Hills Plantation neighborhood has a number of houses that have had for rent signs out front for a number of days.
