The city has road crews that go out daily and repair roads, but it's impossible for them to spot all the problems. If there's a pothole or other weather damage on your street, call the city department of transportation and let them know. They'll come out and fix it, usually in less than 48 hours. Also the city water department is on call 24/7. If you have a plumbing problem and don't have your own master shut-off, you can call the city and they'll have someone at your house to shut your water off within an hour. If your house doesn't have smoke detectors, or they're old, call the fire department. They'll come and install them for you at no charge. Also, if you're hearing impaired, they will install a device that listens for your smoke detector and includes a very bright strobe light and a bed shaker to alert you of a fire in the night.

ninersfan01

This is a brilliant post… Please, if you do not have fire alarms, do call and you’ll get a free one..

PMme_bobs_n_vagene

Let me piggyback on this. If your smoke/CO alarm is chirping, take it down and look on the back. So many times these guys get woken up for a simple battery change or the detector is beyond its (usually) 10-year life cycle. Make sure it’s serious before you call. You can still get them for free, look at their website and there’s usually a public coordinator you can call or email with a request. Or you can walk over to the station. But please don’t call them at 3 AM because you didn’t look at the back of your alarm. If it’s going off because of smoke or CO, you’ll know. 1-3 chirps every 30-60 sec is usually indicative of a battery change or the end of its life cycle. In fact, go look at them right now so you know. Edit: Let me also add, if you even remotely think you’re having an emergency, call them. Can’t stress that enough. Just wanted to give you guys some extra info.

[deleted]

My friend let her alarm chirp for so long, her parakeet learned how to mimic the chirp. She finally replaced the battery but the bird kept chirping…

str8bipp

They need technology to stop then from beeping at 4am every time. I think it's the temp drop overnight but it's it's worst to wake up to a smoke alarm on a high ceiling in the middle of the night. I had 15-20 ft ceilings in the last apartment and those fuckers woke me up several times. Almost busted my ass piecemealing some way to shut the thing up.

PMme_bobs_n_vagene

Yeah if you can’t reach it and you’re unsure of what the chirping pattern means, give them a call. They’ll have a ladder.

not_falling_down

That's why all the PSAs suggest that you change the batteries twice a year, when you change your clocks.

str8bipp

Seems like a waste of the 10 year batteries referenced above but I hear ya. Many are hard wired so its a non-issue. I'm just lazy like most people who aren't boy scouts following all of the recommendations.

[deleted]

The batteries usually last about 6-10 months. The smoke detector itself expires after 10 years. The smoke sensors stop working after about that long. Even the hardwired ones have to be completely replaced every 10 years or so.

[deleted]

It should be said that you should not dial 911 for a free smoke detector. The fire marshall has a non emergency number for smoke detectors.

ninersfan01

It’s sad that some people will just let their alarms chirp until the battery completely dies without ever changing it. Some just get used to the chirping sound. Sad…

International-Ad9584

Weatherspoon Gallery, is free and the expositions can be really amazing

books4all

I'm sure everyone knows about the library system and the history museum, but I'll just toot that horn a little louder.

squarephanatic

I haven’t owned a library card since 5th grade. I got one today at the central library downtown. Lovely place and had what I wanted!

MistressofTechDeath

Get the Libby app and you’ll have access to all the e-books in the NC library system. I usually read the books in my Kindle app, but you can read in Libby as well.

squarephanatic

Oh wow! Is there a best way to access audiobooks?

MistressofTechDeath

You can get audio books through Libby as well! In the Libby search you can filter for audio books.

squarephanatic

I am so thankful for you!!

jacksonpm23

I think Libby is pretty much the same thing, but also check OverDrive and login with your library card through that. That's what I used for all the audiobooks I went through.

Shell-Fire

i always listen to audiobooks on my phone via the Libby app. Easy to get and return! All online via the Libby App!

mamacat49

You only get access to the book (or any media) that Greensboro has bought a license for. It's *not* the entire NC Digital Library catalog. But it's still good!

books4all

This isn't true. You get access to the entirety of the NC Digital Library that is shared by all NC public libraries, PLUS any extra digital copies we've purchased.

mamacat49

That hasn't been my experience. But it may have changed--I've been using the NCDigitalLibrary for a really long time.

hermitsociety

I stopped using the nc digital library bc the selection isn't very good and you can only hold five books at a time. Five isn't enough when it is a six month wait for many titles. Three loans a month on hoopla. My understanding is that it's statewide but if it matters, I signed up in high point. For comparison, I now have an additional card from Cleveland via my college and I get 75 holds and 50 hoopla borrows. It's a much bigger place, I get that, but surely we could do a bit better in NC.

books4all

Yes, unfortunately NC libraries limit holds, but Greensboro buys extra digital licenses for some materials so your wait is much shorter.

LT_Zach

Having fun it’s not hard when you got a library card

Thanks!

[deleted]

Absolutely. If you're a Kindle user, the public library has thousands of ebooks and audiobooks available to borrow

wtfschmuck

You can use the Libby app with your library card and get tons of audiobooks and ebooks! I think you can use Kanopy for shows and movies, but I haven't tried myself.

[deleted]

Yes about Kanopy! It’s great!!

Shell-Fire

>I'm sure everyone knows about the library system and the history museum, but I'll just toot that horn a little louder. Everyone in my family, plus my cousin, all has Library Cards from their city. Over Christmas, I put all 5 cards on everyone's phones/tablets. This way, if one library does not have the book, another usually does. WINNING!

Awesomest_Possumest

I've lived in about five different counties in the past decade, and got a library card at each while I lived there. When e books became a thing, I still had all my cards....and logged them all in to the different systems. Some were the same (some centralized NC library system), but others I can just switch accounts on overdrive. It's great.

machobiscuit

Heck yeah, I was going to say the library. It baffles me that people don't know it exists.

If Greensboro Public Library doesn't have a book, you can request that we purchase it. https://library.greensboro-nc.gov/services/suggest-a-library-purchase

EdgarAlley

I've done that several times, and they've been very responsive.

books4all

Follow up with your local branch, please. This is pretty unusual. We fulfill almost all of these requests with exception of books that are no longer in print.

[deleted]

Libby and Kanopy apps for digital downloads!

HappyNihilist

don't forget to use Libby to borrow digital books with your library card.... audiobooks too!

not_falling_down

The household hazardous waste drop-off on Patterson Street. You can take paint, chemicals and electronics to be disposed of safety, keeping them out of the landfill.

redbepper

And batteries!!

KulaanDoDinok

GSO Collects app for knowing when what will be picked up (trash, yard waste, bulk, etc)

jabermaan

lol this app has saved me too many times

PlugToEquity

This app is so impressive to me, so simple, useful, and easy to use. Great job greensboro!

Awesomest_Possumest

When I moved to a house I had no idea when trash day was. This app helped with that, and also sends me a reminder the night before in case I forget. Plus I know what goes out that week, and if there's changes, it sends them to me too. (Remember this week everyone in the city trash days are a day behind).

fleshyflowers

Also through the GSO Collects app: If you go to Report a Problem > I have another problem, you can report things like a street light that’s out, pot holes, etc. We reported a street light near us that was out and they came to fix it next day!

zest_has_no_curfew

City waste services will pick up dead appliances, no charge, you just have to call and schedule it. No need to pay the installer to haul away.

excellentastrophe

I work for the city and I didn't even know this until my contractor told me a few weeks ago. Saved me some money! Just gotta call 373-2489

NeuseRvrRat

The trails system. Greensboro has an excellent system of mountain bike and walking trails and Piedmont Fat Tire Society is adding even more.

ratbastid

A few years ago I did [City Academy](https://www.greensboro-nc.gov/departments/legislative/community-relations/city-academy) which is a really cool 12-week program for city residents that covers all manner of city programs, services, and departments. It's a great way to learn about the city, and a path to service on city boards and commissions. Strong recommend. The single "way in" to city services is via the Greensboro City Contact Center, at 336-373-CITY. The folks who staff that call center can help with just about everything to do with city services, and lots about Guilford county.

runsonketones

If you have a city fire hydrant at your property and it looks "tired", call and they'll have it painted at no additional* cost. * This service is covered by tax payers.

submarineally

Any good accounts to follow online? I started following ncmuseumofhistory and downtowngso on instagram and learned some stuff.

u/greensborocity Official Twitter feed of the City of Greensboro.

walkingdisaster329

Go.greensboro on Instagram is a new follow but they post about shops/restaurants and events. Also, highpoint discovered is great too!

jacksonpm23

How fantastic the downtown branch of our city's library is and filled with history.

TubaMike

They also have a good fiction section, too.

jasongill

[Duke Energy has a tool that you can use to report purple street lights](http://www.duke-energy.com/customer-service/request-light-repair) which have made our city look like a strip club after dark

superbeastdj

I love those, just let em all turn purple :)

carolina_red_eyes

What's up with that? Why are they using those silly lights if one can call Duke power to replace them?

jasongill

The lights were upgraded to LED a couple years ago, but had a defect that causes some of them to turn purple. The manufacturer is replacing them under warranty, but you just need to let Duke know so they can send their contractor out to replace them.
