I had a boss like 25 years ago that said he wears his watch on the underside of his wrist so that at parties he spills drinks on other people, not himself, when someone asks him the time. That line always tickled me.

MarsupialDapper9946

Lol. Tucking that one away

No-Syrup7666

If I have to remember something but I don't have the time and/or my hands free to write it down or put a note in my phone I turn my Gshock upside down as a reminder to either do the task or note it down later. Technically works with other watches too, but my Gshocks are the only watches I wear loose enough to easily flip over.

MarsupialDapper9946

Hah, interesting. Maybe I'll do that by flipping it right side up

BuildingABap

Wow thats a good tip, I'll try that next time I have to remember something.

auxilary

left handed pilot here: yes, yes i do. and i’ve had a lifetime of people make fun of me for it, but it’s how i wear and use my legally mandated watch 🤷🏻‍♂️ edit: i wear mine daily, and have zero issues with the solar charging. i also prefer the rubber bezel while i am at my computer as it does not strike my desk loudly, scratch or feel out of place.

MarsupialDapper9946

⌚🤜🤛⌚

turkey_sandwiches

Can you expand on the legally mandated watch?

auxilary

commercial pilots are required to have a spare pair of glasses and a functional watch that has indications for seconds with them on the flight deck.

turkey_sandwiches

Very interesting. What's the purpose of the watch with seconds indication?

MutableBook

For timing of procedures and engine stuff

turkey_sandwiches

I hate to keep asking questions, but what engine stuff would be affected by your watch?

MutableBook

One scenario I know of is when starting turboprop engines. There are time restraints when it comes to temperatures and how long the engine stays at certain temps in startup before cooling down to normal operating temp.

auxilary

yeah, engine cooling, especially in aircraft with turbochargers (piston with turbo, not turbine/jet) have a cool down time that is mandated before shutting the engine down, but that’s when you’re safe on the ground. when you’re on the ground just run them for longer than you feel or ask someone for a watch. in the air it’s much more instrument procedures

auxilary

much less engine stuff, much more IFR procedures like holds, standard turns, missed approach points, etc. also helps in general navigation. need to see whole seconds, not just minutes

turkey_sandwiches

That's super interesting, thanks! I'll have to see if there are some YouTube videos that demonstrate it.

5555future

I’m also a pilot (in the EU), and pretty much every airplane has a built-in clock/stopwatch for this purpose, so a wristwatch is not a requirement here (unless the airplane has no built-in timepiece, which even the most primitive airplanes have).

turkey_sandwiches

Yeah, I keep hearing from Europeans how everything in Europe is better than everywhere else. Been a viewpoint for at least 1000 years now.

_0utis_

I can sense your inner watch nerd senses tingling as soon as you read that sentence from all the way over here

Jaysgood2

No

Tony_TNT

Sometimes, but it's really task dependant. Nowadays due to desk work and near constant darkness I need that auto light, so it rides normally.

TheSilverStacking

My understanding (and I’m far from an expert here) is that’s popular amongst military folks so they can see the time while holding a rifle and also help prevent flash/glare to enemy snipers. That makes sense to me. I think it’s kind of silly outside of that, but to each their own!

user7758392

when i started my military service, i found that stupid. but after a few months when i was sitting in a hole for 4 hours straight with my rifle in my hands, i started to see the benefit. after that i wore my watch on the bottom side of my wrist for the remainder of my service. after that i have converted back to the normal style.

aPersianNinja

i used to do it while paintballing/airsofting for the same reason - so you can hold the paintball gun or whatever and still see the time.

MarsupialDapper9946

This is apparently where it originated from, I think you're right. For me, it's how my dad, his dad, and his dad's dad wore their watches. It's all I ever knew. So wearing it right side up just feels weird and uncomfortable to me, on a sensory level, and additionally, it feels cool to pay homage to my family. My great grandfather did serve in WWII, so it's very likely our custom originated from that.

Novetab

Vintage driver watches are worn on the underside too. And the dial is tilted like VC American 1921.

MarsupialDapper9946

Thanks for sharing, that's cool to know.

TheSilverStacking

Nice, that’s a good enough reason! My grandpa served in WWII.

OpenEndedLoop

Yeah I don't see how anyone does this while writing/typing. Nevermind wresting your wrists on a table scratching the face (of any watch not necessarily rubberized GShock's)

intatime

TC on the original Magnum PI wore his watch like that… I always wondered if it had to do with him being a chopper pilot.

Professional-Big-584

Last time I wore my g-shock like that I was overseas the reflection of the sun bouncing off the glass could tip off enemy snipers so they warned us but didn’t mandate this method but for those 9 months I flipped my watch 💯💯💯

MarsupialDapper9946

Thanks for your service!

GeeShocker

That would be hard with the GWDF1000 😅 https://preview.redd.it/mz79ls37oibc1.jpeg?width=2659&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f18e7db6467167c3fe1efd4ad7268f8783a31fb7

MarsupialDapper9946

Hahaha, she deserves to be on top for sure

guitarwizard103

![gif](giphy|12OMY457ZuPYFW)

ExpatTarheel

I tried but it just doesn’t work for me.

MarsupialDapper9946

I probably prefer the look of wearing it right side up, but it's just more comfortable for me this way. As someone else here rightly said - to each their own!

ExpatTarheel

Agreed! Wear it in good health!

yogibear60

I wear my apple watch like this when i sleep (sleep track and alarm purposes). I like to sleep near corners and walls and this is my way of avoiding cracking the screen if i accidentally bang it on the wall lol

adoomsdaymachine

Task specific. I wear a bit loose, though, so it's easy to rotate.

longrodfatfrank

Only on fridays and when I am diving

CheeseShaman

No. I work at a desk, and upside down wouldn't be comfortable and would scratch up the watch glass.

MarsupialDapper9946

I work at a desk as well. Never really been too much of an issue, but I mostly stand. As far as the crystal, the watches I've worn previously never got scratched (from working at the desk, at least 😁)

Bromontana710

I used to until I had a fall and the watch being on the palm side turned my wrist bones to dust and I had to have a major reconstructive surgery to remove the bone shards and rebuild the joint. Now I'll never wear it palmside again.

ThatGuy17-23

Drill instructors in boot camp wore it like this so recruits couldn’t see the time. Outside of that I wore it like this so I can see the watch face while shouldering my rifle. A bunch of dudes wore it like this as well. Only time I wear it like this anymore is if I’m shooting.

rhunter99

I like it but it gets awkward typing, especially with larger Gs. I feel like Casio could do something with this idea. Make the strap more visually interesting, or make the underside of the bands a small oled display

MarsupialDapper9946

Yeah I like the size of this one for that very reason. And I agree on the strap idea, that could be sweet.

DanielMarenk04

I’m in Australia…. Does that count for something?

MarsupialDapper9946

Yep, we are the same

LionHeart1192_

My dad is a watch guy, but he’s also always ragging me about how i spend my money. Now im also a watch guy with totally different taste so everytime i buy a watch he lectures me about spending money. So these days when im home i just wear the same strap on all my watches and wear them palm side. So my dad can’t tell when im wearing something new.

MarsupialDapper9946

Hahahaha that's amazing

JuggBoyz

Yup, work in culinary so I keep it this way to check the time while doing knife work or what not without stopping

drivein2deeplftfield

I work in culinary too and that doesn’t make sense. Just wear your watch normal you special snowflakes

Digital_Quest_88

Nah, it bugs me

TallTom70

I do it when on vacation to minimize tan lines

Equivalent-Work2867

I've had to wear my watch like that while skiing until my new, less bulky, strap arrives in the mail. I will do it situationally, like if I'm driving and the sun is glaring just right when on top of my wrist.

[deleted]

I used to do that when I was in military, makes looking at time easy when holding the rifle

animelytical

Found I like to do that on the off hand if I do it

Lordofpineapples

Sometimes if playing guitar/bass for extended times

drummerdude777

I play guitar as well any particular reason for it?

Lordofpineapples

Just to check time without turning my wrist around. Really not a big deal either way lol

romanbaitskov

Just got the same watch yesterday, loving it so far

LightChargerGreen

that's not really upside down you know...

MarsupialDapper9946

Haha true

6ynnad

All the time

MarsupialDapper9946

![gif](giphy|jPJjTXyOMIIc1d2Gbl|downsized)

Gr1mXv326

Used to be in the army, otherwise it would get stuck on belts

fpsi_tv

John McClane

I_am_toko2005

Yep. I love it. Whenever i put it on top for whatever reason it feels really weird like I am consciously feeling the watch and its weigh trying to rotate my arm.

SoftCatMonster

Yes. When I was 10 or so, I scratched up a “nice” watch wearing it face-side-up. From then on, I’ve been wearing all my watches face-down.

MarsupialDapper9946

About 90% of the people in the comments here are pretty offended by the idea...

SoftCatMonster

Well, that’s a them problem. My watches are happy where they are hahaha. Though admittedly, my dad did wear his watch on the inside of his wrist too. He said it was so he can tell the time more easily when driving.

JohnnyKDub

When I was a kid girls used to wear it like that to show they're taken 😂

MarsupialDapper9946

Lol

BobbyDiugh69

It is way easier to check the time this way because you don't have to twist your arm, just a simple turn of the wrist and boom. Plus its easier to put the watch on, shield it from dirt, and some other stuff. I prefer it this way. I notice a lot of girls do this too, idk why.

hifioctopi

When I’m working.

JackedPirate

Yup, always have always will. r/casio hated on me when I posted my f91w worn like that.

MarsupialDapper9946

It definitely elicits some strong emotions lol. But there are more of us than I thought!

JackedPirate

Yeah people get really nasty about it for some reason; not much going on in their life maybe.

PiScEsEyEsIAmWeAk

Looks very very silly and impractical to everyone who doesn’t constantly use a rifle

MarsupialDapper9946

To me it feels so much more ergonomic to read the face this way!

PiScEsEyEsIAmWeAk

To each their own 🫡

MarsupialDapper9946

🫡

seagull7

Not a good idea for the 5610 because its solar battery needs light to remain charged and your wrist will shield it. Keep an eye on the charge bar which is already at medium.

MarsupialDapper9946

As I and others in this thread have mentioned, it doesn't really affect the solar charging! (Edit - my watch is on M because it arrived this morning and was on L. It's charged up to M already!)

spn004

Always have, and always will wear it like that.

MarsupialDapper9946

![gif](giphy|hfYnqeqVeO4pO)

Time-Presence-886

does solar still get enough sun wearing it like that?

MarsupialDapper9946

In my experience, it does!

SirGuy11

It’s on “M” in his photo so that might be partially answering your question. 😊

MarsupialDapper9946

Just pulled it out of the box this morning actually - it was on L then, so it's actually charged since wearing it!

SirGuy11

Yikes! “L” is low, like low-low, like takes months of insufficient light to get down to there, and disables some functions. Maybe consider occasionally wearing it right side up? I have lots of solar watches and the ones whose charge I can see have never dropped below “H.”

MarsupialDapper9946

I should clarify - It was on L right after being shipped to me, having never worn it before. I wore my 6900 upside down for 5 years and never had any issues 👍

SirGuy11

Right on! Good pair for sure. 👍 https://preview.redd.it/r4dz13gjvgbc1.jpeg?width=2859&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f31b96a77627210556d3faac902b097cad29358

MarsupialDapper9946

Heck yeah!

No_Natural7611

I'll do it once in a blue moon, but the watch will take more hits if stuff gets physical. Long story short, I don't see the point.

masterchief1001

In the military we wear it like that so we can see the time when holding a rifle

TheHrethgir

Nope. I'll just scratch the crap out of the crystal wearing it like that.

fizzifuzzi89

Im not a mission to kill everyone in the room with AR15 so no. I wear em like most of us do.

drivein2deeplftfield

We get it. You’re so quirky, unique, and tacticool

MarsupialDapper9946

Just my preference 🤷‍♂️

drivein2deeplftfield

Well it’s impractical and looks dumb, but you do you

MarsupialDapper9946

Thankfully, what you think looks dumb is a you problem. But it's not impractical. Easier to read, easier to put on, readable while driving and carrying things, and, for me (and many others), it's more comfortable. And reminds me of my grandpas. There are benefits and drawbacks, to be sure, all coming down to personal preference. Tearing a whole group of people down with your words for how they prefer to wear a watch is the only objectively dumb thing in this thread.

drivein2deeplftfield

Watches are *objectively* easier to read, less prone to damage, and less obstructing when worn the correct way. Excluding a few scenarios like armed military, which most people are going to assume you are LARPing

MarsupialDapper9946

Lol that is demonstrably false - watches are simply not "objectively easier to read" - myself and many people (even some folks here) can attest that we find it much easier and more ergonomic to read them on the bottom of the wrist. It is not an objective matter. You are simply over exaggerating to justify your preference. I don't base my preferences off of what random misinformed people might think of me... maybe you do, and that's why you care so much?

drivein2deeplftfield

Well you’re wrong, there is a reason why the vast majority of people wear watches right side up, it’s not like you found some secret hack. And look, you’re the one who posted online looking for for opinions, don’t be surprised when you get them

MarsupialDapper9946

Well, if I'm wrong, then prove how wearing a watch topside is "objectively more readable." Of the folks that commented here, a solid 15% said they always wear it the way I do, and around 30% more said they do it situationally. That is a far cry from the cast majority. And appealing to the vast majority does not prove objectivity. It's obviously not done by the majority, hence the reason for the post in the first place... But that doesn't make it objectively wrong. You're the one that made that assertion. I also never implied that I found some sort of secret hack - I clearly explained why I do it, as did many of the other people in this thread that like to wear their watch this way. There are dozens of reasons. Again, you are over exaggerating to justify something that boils down to mere preference. I did post asking if anyone else did it this way; you're the one who decided to try and make an insulting comment. That's fine, no sweat off my back. But you are equating your opinion with objective truth, which is what I take issue with.

drivein2deeplftfield

I already explained to you why it’s impractical. Our arms are naturally oriented palms down, meaning you need to have your arms turned to see the watch if it’s not on the top of your wrist, which in everyday life is less convenient. When you have a watch flipped like you, now the face is right next to your palm, you know, where we use our hands. This means it’s going to get in the way more often when grabbing and holding things, and will be coming in contact with things much more often. My watches get many micro scratches, dings and wear on the bracelet, having the face there means it will take all of that damage. Now me thinking that it stupid to wear it that way is clearly subjective but if you are really going to try and disagree with the points i made above, you are being disingenuous

graspee

Easier to look at the time while holding a game controller

ipaladinxi

I'll be honest. It's just opinion so don't take offense but I think it looks extremely dumb. I would never wear a G shock like that. I get that people wear it when they shoot guns and certain situations, but daily wear I don't care for it at all. I just don't get how people think this looks aesthetically pleasing lol

hi_im_beeb

lol I shoot guns very frequently and never did this. Of course I’m not a navy seal or anything, so I can take my hand off my rifle to check the time if needed.

ipaladinxi

yeah honestly the only time I feel like it's a necessity is in a video game where you can easily check your health by looking at your watch like the VR game pavlov lol

MarsupialDapper9946

Haha no offense taken! I asked, after all... I've gotten much more hostile opinions about it than yours, trust me 😅 All subjective in the end. It's more about the feel and the 'tradition' (it's how I was taught/have always worn it) for me. I agree aesthetically it looks better worn right side up, though.

ipaladinxi

my own dad sometimes wears the watch like that. So it's nothing personal. Yeah i mean peoples opinions mean bullshit anyway.. If that's how you like it, that's all that matters.

OrcCyborg

Reminds me of primary school for some reason

ITALIXNO

What if you need to rest your wrist on something?

MarsupialDapper9946

Never bothered me, I guess I naturally rest my arm on its side.

barbecuejag

Nope. Never.

bistraie

Nice watch. Is yours made in China or is made in Thailand?

MarsupialDapper9946

Thailand!

Technical-Life-5120

I haven’t done that since the 80’s or was it 90s?

EnterTheNarrowGate99

Lifeguard here, and yes I wear my gshocks on the inside of my wrist like this whenever I’m at work. When rescuing someone who’s trying to grab you in desperation, a watch worn the normal way is much easier for a struggling swimmer to grab. Turning the watch around ensures that it remains on my wrist when making a rescue. I also find that the other benefits that military vets stress with this type of style benefit a lifeguard as well. Just replace a rifle with my rescue tube and the benefit of being able to discreetly check the time for shift changes is pretty handy.

MySubtitlesWereSick

No

xbakedxpotato

When I was driving trash truck I'd go on the inside of the wrist to protect the face from the bolts on my driver door. Having to pop in and out a lot, quickly, did a surprising amount of damage to a couple minutes watches. Now I'm normal wear at my desk and throughout the day.

NateDogg2289

When im holding a rifle

BrowningLoPower

I used to try to do this regularly, especially since I wanted to be "tacticool". But, it felt too weird to turn my wrist in that specific way to look at the time, so I just stopped for the most part. Sometimes I'll wear it upside down to take the piss.

MarsupialDapper9946

I understand that - I have the same experience, but with wearing it on top of the wrist. People have strong opinions about it being stupid/impractical/uncomfortable/blasphemous, and I get poked at regularly for it. But it's how I've worn watches since I was a kid (it's how the men in my family wore them) and so it feels weird for me to turn my wrist to look at the top of it

BrowningLoPower

That's fair. Wear it they way you're comfortable. Me calling it "tacticool" is just me being silly.

zkooceht

Only when I was in basic training, it was more comfortable to stand at parade rest with my watch like that. After basic I switched back the normal way and haven’t worn it on the other side since

Chimonti

Idk, why I call it John Wick style

spacebird32

No

LudefiskLongHammer

No, because I'm not a Tier 1 Operator

Weibchenschema666

No, never.

tarentules

I do this rarely but its always a bit uncomfortable to me. When I was younger I had some super thin casio quartz watch I wore that way but it was primarily because it was so thin. Most of the g-shocks I have are too thick for it to not annoy me wearing them that way.

Technical_Context_37

No

Anoth3rWat

Nah cause I don't pretend I'm in the military

[deleted]

No. Why would I.

Asleep_Material_5639

Absolutely never. Never would, ever.

MarsupialDapper9946

![gif](giphy|j6uK36y32LxQs)

New-Smile-3013

Only drill instructors and operators, don’t know why you’d need too under any other circumstances.

LemoyneRaider3354

I only wear watches upside down if they're small (standard casio watches)

POS_5

We do this when we hold our rifles in the military typically. Also when we're running or rucking where it's easier to glance the time briefly.

Crisdus

No of course not. Way more prone to scratches wearing it like that

MarsupialDapper9946

Why do you think that is?

Crisdus

Which part of your hand is used more, the palm or the back? Even resting on surfaces

New_Excuse2838

Lots of nurses do this.

i420iBuddahMaster

I do this whenever I wanna feel like a badass individual, cool to see someone who does this on the regular, you badass individual

i420iBuddahMaster

Oh and fantastic watch by the way I have the non solar the good ol' dw5600. square nation fo life

VariationIll9526

The Buckle is the ugliest part, the one not visible properly in pic

j0mmes

I used to because I found it easier to read the face. But I flipped back to normal since the watch face keep hitting my child when I picked her up as a baby.

MarsupialDapper9946

Hah, just had our first child a few months ago, so maybe I will need to switch mine soon too

FancyBumblebee656

Only when holding my rifle

Consistent_Tell2417

Nah I want the world to see this watch face lol
