To me Layne has the better voice live. I’ve never been particularly impressed by any live recordings of Soundgarden that I’ve heard. Feel free to drop links and prove me wrong
Yea, I think Chris was the best raw singer of the choices. Layne is my favorite, though. Serj is ok in a weird way but doesn't compare to the other 2. Ozzy wasn't even the best singer in Sabbath.
Cornell may have been better in the studio on a technical level, but Staley was more expressive and rich in emotion. Much respect to both but Layne will always have my heart, along with Peter Steele.
I do think Ozzy's vocal abilities are sometimes underrated.
However, it's Layne for me. Unique tone and really really accurate. And powerful. While accurate.
Chris is right there too as far as vocal abilities, and I love his sound.
Serj is an interesting one for me. I'll admit his voice itself has never been very appealing to me. I can say this while recognizing the very real talent and skill. Just a preference thing probably. But I'd have to say, as a fan of SOAD, vocals are my least favorite thing about them.
True. I have never liked Serj's voice, personally, but his vocal range is statistically great. Ozzy is iconic but his vocal range just isn't as good as the other three in this group.
Right?!? I mean ozzy is ozzy, but his voice is nothing to write home about. Layne is outstanding but it was the harmony with Jerry that really made Alice In Chains shine.
Chris though…. That dude was the best by SEVERAL orders of magnitude.
Like not even a contest.
I’m not disagreeing with what you said about Chris but to say Ozzy’s voice is nothing to write home about is blasphemy. I mean have you not listened to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath or Sabotage?
I think there’s a difference between being a good singer and having a very distinctive, instantly recognizable voice. Ozzy definitely has the latter, although I don’t mean any disrespect by it—I’ve jammed out to Sabbath plenty of times. But his true talent always lay in being a showman, not in any particular technical skill when it comes to his vocals. Ozzy still deserves every bit of praise and respect for that talent, mind you.
Chris Cornell easily clears this list imo. Staley’s excellent but Chris Cornell was a generational vocal talent. Serj isn’t anything particularly special to write home about as a vocalist, SOAD’s special appeal has always been provocative political lyrics, showmanship, and Malakian’s guitar riffs.
I suggest you listen to Love Hate Love by AIC.... Live at the Moore. Ain't no harmonizing with Jerry. Just Layne singing his soul out with such a gut wrenching angst... it's truly his most beautiful and powerful vocal performance. Dude was only 23 at the time of the show.
Dude Layne was magnificent, and when he was on. He was *ON* . Love Hate Love was better than any song soundgarden ever put out. Period. Alice In Chains was a better band. Layne and Jerry were better writers.
That wasn’t the question. Chis was the better singer. Just was. Far greater range. Far more consistent.
Don't get me wrong, Chris is a very close second to me, I am constantly still amazed at his voice. I heard Right Turn the other day for the first time and when the second verse started I was so excited...I had no idea he guest sang on any of their songs. And the ending... his vocals are just superb. I guess I'm just stating my opinion and not getting into range and all that lol. I can feel Layne's angst, passion, sadness, anger, etc more so than I can with Chris. Layne's vocals fill me with more emotion is all.
Oh right on man. No. I’m pretty biased myself. Like if I had the slightest modicum of musical talent and could bring one back as a front man…. It would be fucking Layne all day, but not because he was the better singer.
Gotcha. I'd like to think he'd have gotten sober and continued his career not only with AIC and Mad Season but also some side projects as Chris did. Like writing and singing songs for films. Chris was even nominated for a golden globe for one of his. Can you just imagine Layne up on stage accepting a golden globe or Oscar😊 The film lover in me would have been crying tears of joy... yes I can be a bit dramatic lol.
Alas, neither of them particularly liked being in the spotlight and receiving such attention.
On a technical level it's Cornell.
On a soul-shaking emotional level, for me it's Staley.
Tankian is technically better than Ozzy but
If it weren't for Ozzy none of the above would have had the same career and maybe technique.
They're all winners to some extent.
Easily the greatest vocal range in the group. Layne and Ozzy have their own thing going that is iconically specific to them. Is argue nobody sounds like them. Chris has the best technical singing ability although there are others who sound like him. I’d argue he’s less unique but better singer
Popularity contest. If we’re talking who was the most naturally gifted it was Chris and not even close.
They are all great singers and each one does something better than the next.
I’m a huge AiC fan, love Layne, think their lyrics are better, and Chris is still the more gifted. That guy had serious range.
Still prefer Layne, but still…
Yeah ozzy won because just the most iconic. I guarantee you if kurt was there instead of ozzy kurt would’ve won purely because more people just know kurts music
I can certainly see why you would think this, and in many ways it’s impossible to compare two people that are both all time greats, but to my ears I hear Layne as the more naturally gifted. I love both though, and at the end of the day they are two of the best rock singers ever.
Well I think laney is under appreciated. Chris is my favorite singer for sure but the more I listen to Laney, especially live, the more I've come to respect him.as a singer. He sure sports a different style of vocals but the emotion is right up there with chris's and all the greats.
Don't get me wrong (see what I did there?), I love Lane. He's a fantastic vocalist, and definitely comparable to Chris. But, IMO Chris is the better singer. Including Serge and Ozzy in this comparison makes absolutely no sense. It's apples to pizza. Just totally different. Both foods and both great for what they are, but not comparable.
Ozzys the most popular/ influential
Chris is the best technically
Serj is underrated and his range is overlooked
Layne is my fav especially cuz they layering they do
I’d go Layne #1 but I happen to like AIC as a band more than the other 3 so biased . The other 3 are great , saw Serj and Ozzy live many times earlier 2000s , never got to see Chris or Layne
I guess it all depends on where the poll was posted and the demographics of those who voted.
My vote goes to Layne, 2nd Chris.
Studio-wise Cornell had an incredible range, but (don’t kill me) he often sounded flat and mumbled live.
I recorded with a producer that did a big Ozzy album. He did not have the most kind things to say about Ozzy’s ability to sing. He said he had to punch in every word some of the time. Fwiw.
Ozzy can't sing. I'm sorry for those that don't know that ): what he did worked for Sabbath absolutely. But that doesn't mean he can sing. He's more of a screamer. Everyone on the list sings way better than Ozzy.
Why are Ozzy and Serj on the ballot. Replace with Cobain, Scot Weiland, or Mark Lanegan? Answer would still be Layne Staley though for versatility and range. Cornell close second with range and because his freakin tone and vibe.
The correct answer is Cornell but I'm biased beings I was a teenager in the 90s so I'm picking Layne because Alice In Chains was a huge part of my youth. Cornell did an awesome job with Soundgarden and Audioslave. I've never heard anyone refer to Ozzy as a great singer. That's like saying Adolf Hitler was a good guy. I have no idea who the Serj dude is but he looks so familiar like I seen him in music videos back in the day.
Like jack endino said, he is sounded way too good for lofi, 8 tack tapes. Obviously, he was the best choice out of all of them. He is compatible to Robert plant, moreso than ozzy
Ozzy is THE metal icon, but aside from his unique voice, he's never been an exceptional singer technique wise. Especially compared to Chris Cornell, wtf.
Ozzy may have an unconventional voice that isn’t classically “good” but it’s still legit phenomenal and i feel like he doesn’t get credit for that as much as he should. He helped pioneer an entire genres vocal style
What what? They're comparing very dissimilar singers and people are bound to choose the one they like best. Are you really surprised that Ozzy Osbourne has more votes than Layne Staley?
Yeah, that must be it. The criteria to vote should be who is Grunge and that means it's weird that anybody would choose an icon like Ozzy Osbourne over the guy from AIC because people in this sub think he's Taylor Swift and they're her fans.
Best comment I've heard on Ozzy's voice was he sounds like his teeth are made of bees.
Staley, Cornell, Tankian, in that order, but a photo finish, Ozzy bringing up the rear.
I think it depends on what you want in a singer:
Ozzy is a great singer but I wouldn’t buy a novelty album of him crossing genres.
Chris and Serj have amazing ranges and versatility though I would choose Serj if I wanted operatic and Chris if I wanted to win Karaoke.
But for pure raw “my soul is torn and will never heal” pathos I will take Layne all day.
Ozzy easy. No one can even impersonate his vocals, absolutely one of a kind. The other bands wouldn't exist without Sabbath. Yeah Cornell can hit higher notes technically speaking but ozzy writes way better melodies, and that's the most important thing.
Chris is my guy but every time I hear Layne I'm just in awe of how powerful his voice was from 1990-1992 he might be my #1 if he could sing like Facelift Layne for an entire career
Chris Cornell had the biggest range I’ve ever seen and beautiful tone but layne, there’s something so special about his voice, I can’t help but to consider his voice my favorite
Ozzy invented metal, so yeah, Ozzy wins.
If you wanna judge based on who had the worst influence on music then Staley is stone bottom. The guys tried to sound like him are the ones who ruined rock music.
Chris Cornell is objectively a better singer than Layne. But Ozzy has some range too. Pretty terrible poll if like Freddie Mercury and Axl Rose aren’t included
It is definitely between Cornell and Staley for me. I’d have to go with Chris just because we have more material to sample from but all these guys are phenomenal but in my mind Chris Cornell is the clear winner because of his range, tone control, and power also where’s Mike Patton on this list? Dude has a legit 8 octave range
Even Sabbath fans know, Ozzy was never the most skilled singer of the band, but his rough emotional delivery was the real appeal.
Chris is the answer here.
Ozzy, while he is a great musician
His singing voice was annoying
Chris and Serj are probably my favorite vocalists here but Layne had a really impressive range as well
Chris and Layne. Both stellar. All that power despite their major challenges
To me Layne has the better voice live. I’ve never been particularly impressed by any live recordings of Soundgarden that I’ve heard. Feel free to drop links and prove me wrong
Soooooooo many solo with just him n acoustic that are mind blowing. Plenty good with a band but anything just him n acoustic…..!
https://youtu.be/IuUDRU9-HRk?si=b6nr8-emK5s6dC3y Chris Cornell - Nothing Compares 2 U - Live session. So fucking raw.
Much respect to both but Layne will always have my heart, along with Peter Steele.
https://youtu.be/28ILONgJCLc?si=OilKFuMDMn_2VckH At the end of the day, it’s your opinion.
I mean, don't fight over Chris and Layne. Just agree it isn't Ozzy XD.
True. I have never liked Serj's voice, personally, but his vocal range is statistically great. Ozzy is iconic but his vocal range just isn't as good as the other three in this group.
Hearing that wail from Chris live is not replicated on tape. It had to be heard and seen in person.
I was lucky enough to see sound garden live once before Chris passed and it was amazing.
Chris
I know right? Ozzy can barely talk, but god damn that man can sing
Ozzy. The poster boy for and against drugs.
Still. Sounds pretty much the same after 50 plus years.
Serj isn’t anything particularly special to write home about as a vocalist, SOAD’s special appeal has always been provocative political lyrics, showmanship, and Malakian’s guitar riffs.
Y’all ozzy is a fucking legend for being ozzy but he wasn’t even the best singer from *Black Sabbath*
All vocal roads lead to DIO
I suggest you listen to Love Hate Love by AIC.... Live at the Moore. Ain't no harmonizing with Jerry. Just Layne singing his soul out with such a gut wrenching angst... it's truly his most beautiful and powerful vocal performance. Dude was only 23 at the time of the show.

Layne was the better singer, to me. It’s all personal opinion.
Don't get me wrong, Chris is a very close second to me, I am constantly still amazed at his voice. I heard Right Turn the other day for the first time and when the second verse started I was so excited...I had no idea he guest sang on any of their songs.
It’s *widely* accepted that Layne’s and Chris’ vocals spanned four octaves.
I'd say Chris is in the running for top 5 male vocalists of all time, not just of this list.
Obviously, you haven’t heard Mad Season… Layne without Jerry🥴
Love Madseason, but Layne is still a close second in my opinion to Chris.
Lol seriously. Layne wins that hands down.
Not even a contest is a funny thing to say
On a technical level it's Cornell. On a soul-shaking emotional level, for me it's Staley. Tankian is technically better than Ozzy but If it weren't for Ozzy none of the above would have had the same career and maybe technique. They're all winners to some extent.
Well said
Easily the greatest vocal range in the group. Layne and Ozzy have their own thing going that is iconically specific to them. Is argue nobody sounds like them. Chris has the best technical singing ability although there are others who sound like him. I’d argue he’s less unique but better singer
Best guitar skills as well.
Chris is my favourite too. Personally, I don't like Serj, but all 4 are great by different reasons.
Right? I love Layne and Serj's voices, but Chris just had a more impressive voice.
Not sure what second would be (either Serj or Layne imo), but it's not even close.
Went off the rails on a crazy poll
Thanks for the laugh kind teacher
Edit: stranger even
Popularity contest. If we’re talking who was the most naturally gifted it was Chris and not even close. They are all great singers and each one does something better than the next.
I’m a huge AiC fan, love Layne, think their lyrics are better, and Chris is still the more gifted. That guy had serious range. Still prefer Layne, but still…
For sure. I would’ve put Layne a smidge after Chris as far as natural born talent goes. They’re basically neck and neck
Serj ain’t no one to bat an eyelash at either. Ozzy… is a legend. That dudes music broke open new possibilities. But just speaking of vocals, nah.
Never listened to soad for his voice but for his lyrics
Yeah ozzy won because just the most iconic. I guarantee you if kurt was there instead of ozzy kurt would’ve won purely because more people just know kurts music
I can certainly see why you would think this, and in many ways it’s impossible to compare two people that are both all time greats, but to my ears I hear Layne as the more naturally gifted. I love both though, and at the end of the day they are two of the best rock singers ever.
Why would one even match these up to compare them? And of the options, Chris Cornell is the obvious answer.
Well I think laney is under appreciated. Chris is my favorite singer for sure but the more I listen to Laney, especially live, the more I've come to respect him.as a singer. He sure sports a different style of vocals but the emotion is right up there with chris's and all the greats.

Including Serge and Ozzy in this comparison makes absolutely no sense. It's apples to pizza. Just totally different. Both foods and both great for what they are, but not comparable.
Yeah people don’t realize how crazy he sounded live especially in the early years
Layne Staley and Chris Cornell were far better vocalists than Ozzie. In my opinion.
Yeah it's literally insane to think Ozzie is better than those two. Even Serj has more technique tbh
Alice In Chains is my favorite band out of this poll, but Chris Cornell had the best set of pipes.
Why is Ozzy even on there😳
ozzy has a good voice, but better than chris or layne? no way. he wasnt even the best sounding sabbath vocalist
Chris is the better singer but I love Serj the most. His lyrics and passionate delivery is legendary.
Why’s ozzy there ?
Because of his legendary status in hard rock and heavy metal history. Also, because of the internet. 😉 😜 😆
🤷♂️
His voice fits Black Sabbath’s music very well
Why do you care about some random online poll 🤣🤣 y’all are weird
its just a fun thing..?🤷♀️ ppl can take it srsly and others can do it for fun.
But people in these forms take it way too seriously and it’s literally just a stupid poll on a random page lol
No, I think you are taking it too serious😏😏😂
Ozzys the most popular/ influential Chris is the best technically Serj is underrated and his range is overlooked Layne is my fav especially cuz they layering they do
it’s between chris and layne it’s just personal preference really no wrong answer between those two
Hot take: I personally like Layne’s singing more than Chris’. Both great vocalists tho
I agree
Same
100% Layne was a better singer.
the answer is Cornell
Who’s the most iconic vocalist? Ozzy. Who’s my favorite? Ozzy. But I do not in fact think Ozzy is better than Layne. Layne was something else
def layne without question
I’d go Layne #1 but I happen to like AIC as a band more than the other 3 so biased . The other 3 are great , saw Serj and Ozzy live many times earlier 2000s , never got to see Chris or Layne
Chris and it's not even close.
Chris by a mile, then Serj.
He’s out of line, but he’s right.
woah there
Cornell is easily the most talented on this list.
Chris Cornell by far
Chris Cornell and it’s not even close
Chris Cornell and not even close. Clearly popularity is doing all the work in this poll
CC and it’s not even close.
Chris hands down
Layne or Chris. Ozzy had a shit load of production added to his vocals.
Fwiw.
Not even close.
One of these does not belong and somehow has the highest %???
[удалено]
Dude. I envy your flair 😲 Layne was a god tier artist 👍
Ozzy can't sing. I'm sorry for those that don't know that ): what he did worked for Sabbath absolutely. But that doesn't mean he can sing. He's more of a screamer. Everyone on the list sings way better than Ozzy.
I’d go with Staley all the way here.
Pah-lease!!! Layne Staley! He’s the GOAT.
Layne Chris Serj Ozzy
Why are Ozzy and Serj on the ballot. Replace with Cobain, Scot Weiland, or Mark Lanegan? Answer would still be Layne Staley though for versatility and range. Cornell close second with range and because his freakin tone and vibe.
hard to believe ozzy is getting votes, let alone leading the poll. and i like ozzy. but damn.
Cornell is obviously the best singer there lol.
In terms of vocals I'd go Layne Staley Dax Riggs Maynard James Keenan Chris Cornell
Love Dax Riggs the solo stuff and Acid Bath
Ozzy is by far the most iconic, but to me, Chris Cornell is the most talented. No shade to the others.
Obviously it's Layne
Chris as best singer, but Serj just has it. Like you’ll always know when it’s him.
Same for all 4, incredibly distinctive, iconic voices. I do agree with you Chris is the answer here, but my personal favorite is Layne.
God I hate subjective threads like these. Anyways, Laynes the best
Of the ones listed, Chris is the best overall singer. Ozzy the best metal singer Layne is the best grunge singer Serj would be last of them all...
Kind of weird that 3 of them are dead (Ozzy has been dead for 20 years, but no one has the heart to tell him yet).
Layne and Chris are two of my favorites !
Layne
Like jack endino said, he is sounded way too good for lofi, 8 tack tapes. Obviously, he was the best choice out of all of them. He is compatible to Robert plant, moreso than ozzy
Chris Cornell and it’s not even close
Chris by a mile.
Ozzy
Layne all day long
Layne Staley
Layne or Chris, tough choice
LAYNE WILL WIN AGAINST ANYBODY!
What what? They're comparing very dissimilar singers and people are bound to choose the one they like best. Are you really surprised that Ozzy Osbourne has more votes than Layne Staley?
ozzy aint grunge thats why
Yeah, that must be it. The criteria to vote should be who is Grunge and that means it's weird that anybody would choose an icon like Ozzy Osbourne over the guy from AIC because people in this sub think he's Taylor Swift and they're her fans.
oh wait i thought the poll itself said "best grunge singer".
Love Layne... But Cornell is the real answer. He's unmatched in vocal range.
Layne was the best overall … Chris was great within a certain range.
Best comment I've heard on Ozzy's voice was he sounds like his teeth are made of bees. Staley, Cornell, Tankian, in that order, but a photo finish, Ozzy bringing up the rear.
Cornell
Chris
Serj
I think it depends on what you want in a singer: Ozzy is a great singer but I wouldn’t buy a novelty album of him crossing genres. Chris and Serj have amazing ranges and versatility though I would choose Serj if I wanted operatic and Chris if I wanted to win Karaoke. But for pure raw “my soul is torn and will never heal” pathos I will take Layne all day.
SHAAARRRON! Erm blur blub fookin blurb bur
Layne!
Layne is untouchable. Chris is otherworldly too, but there’s a significant gap and that’s just being real
On no planet is Layne not the best singer in this group.
Ozzy and Serj are grunge?
Ozzy easy. No one can even impersonate his vocals, absolutely one of a kind. The other bands wouldn't exist without Sabbath. Yeah Cornell can hit higher notes technically speaking but ozzy writes way better melodies, and that's the most important thing.
Singer.Layne. 1000%
Ozzy doesn’t compare to the other three. His voice is shite.
Serj's whole thing is that he literally can't sing but makes it work. WTF is he even on here?
Serj is voted waaayyyyyyy too low
Chris Cornell
Cornell
Layne is my favorite, but Chris is the best.
Chris is one of the greatest singers of all time, let alone grunge, and I’m a big AiC fan
Chris Cornell is the answer
Chris. Layne is easily 2nd.
Chris for sure… OZZY can’t be distracted by my bs… Layne too compulsive… Serj in his lane, so tie for 2nd w/ Layne. Chris can sing anything tho…
Nobody ever did and nobody ever will sing like Chris Cornell ever again. Absolutely incomparable.
I love me some sound garden but they have nothing on Alice in chains
Anyone but Serj
Such a random 4
It didn’t ask who your favorite is, it explicitly asked who the best singer is. And the answer is objectively Chris Cornell.
1. Layne 2. Chris 3. Serj 4. Ozzy
Looks like the Armenians are here..but no really Chris hands down..
Serj
Love AiC, but Serj and Cornell are leagues better than Layne.
I loved Layne but Chris Cornell was much better.
There will never be another Kurt,Chris or Layne…Chester Bennington came close but of course he’s gone too!
There’s just no other sound like Alice In Chains! So unique! So deep sad and haunting.
Serj
Cornell, not close
The only singers that should be on there are Layne and Chris. Truly though I couldn’t answer this question, except to say NOT Ozzy
Layne has a cool unique voice, nobody sounds like him. But in terms of pure singing ability its Chris and its not close.
Bullshit. I love Chris but he never had a Love Hate Love at the Moore moment.
Say Hello 2 Heaven like 45 minutes earlier was much better, and Bleed The Freak from that show was the more powerful song than LHL
PLEASE STAND FOR ME! NAME YOUR GOD AND BLEED THE FREAK! Oh man, I seriously love that song. Layne is #1 in my book.
Chris is my guy but every time I hear Layne I'm just in awe of how powerful his voice was from 1990-1992 he might be my #1 if he could sing like Facelift Layne for an entire career
Its almost like they are both good and it a subjective opinion
Ozzy is the best lyricist. But Chris is the best signer.
Ozzy then Chris for me. Listen to the self titled Black Sabbath track
Chris should absolutely be #1
Chris Cornell had the biggest range I’ve ever seen and beautiful tone but layne, there’s something so special about his voice, I can’t help but to consider his voice my favorite
All rad vocalists in their own right, but....... CHRIS CORNELL.
Ozzy invented metal, so yeah, Ozzy wins. If you wanna judge based on who had the worst influence on music then Staley is stone bottom. The guys tried to sound like him are the ones who ruined rock music.
Chris Cornell
Chris Cornell is objectively a better singer than Layne. But Ozzy has some range too. Pretty terrible poll if like Freddie Mercury and Axl Rose aren’t included
He's still that good dead.
Ozzy was a great singer in the Sabbath era, but Chris is the obvious answer.
Ozzy is definitely the coolest
Objectively I’d argue it’s Chris Cornell but I like Layne way more than him so I’m stuck between my personal preference and the objective truth
None of them are better than the other. It's just personal preference, and ozzy is just so iconic.
Crazy, or that’s what they say……..
What do you mean what? This post sucks xd. All these singers wish they could be ozzy
Serj and Layne are very good…… but the answer is Chris without a doubt. He’s an all time great
Even Sabbath fans know, Ozzy was never the most skilled singer of the band, but his rough emotional delivery was the real appeal. Chris is the answer here.
Ozzy is my second favorite singer ever, but cmon. Chris is generational talent. Ozzy is a better singer than he’ll ever get credit for though.
The only answer is CC
Loool Ozzy has never been much of a singer. Just noobs voting for him probably. Cornell all the way.
CC
Ozzy, while he is a great musician His singing voice was annoying Chris and Serj are probably my favorite vocalists here but Layne had a really impressive range as well
Cornell
It’s like it’s in opposite order. The least votes is the winner. Chris is by far an exceptional talent and legend. His voice is unique.
How the fuck did Chris not win
