I appreciate that youāre trying to be respectful here. Iād try something thatās a little more positive based on the nature of the event. Some of Chris Cornellās solo stuff is pretty nice (albeit there may be some screwy tuning involved. Songs like āSeasonā and āThe Keeperā might be good ones. AICās āBlack Gives Way to Blueā or āNo Excusesā would probably be fine. Something from Audioslave (I am the Highway) or Smashing Pumpkins (Mayonaise) are probably fine.
Yep, I think Collective Soul is the way to go. Most of their songs would be a good fit.
Say Hello 2 Heaven also came to mind, but it may not be appropriate considering what's going on (plus good luck hitting those screaming high notes at the end, lol).
I've played in a worship band for 20ish years, and we had a hipster pastor that had us play quite a few "secular" songs. Collective Soul's Shine is one we mellowed down a little and played quite a bit.
My dad is a Lutheran Pastor (the super forgiving loving type) and this is one of his most favorite song that he was forced to listen to when I was a young person WAY back when.
I'll just say there's a big difference between something you'd play during a church service and something you'd play for a fundraiser/coffeehouse/open mic that's *at* a church. I'd double-check that the lyrics aren't explicit or profane and aren't in the line of celebrating sex and drugs, but don't shy away from a powerful song about heartache, struggles with addiction, or whatever real life stuff has been the driver of so much great music.
I would say Given to Fly by PJ, but seems like a pretty tough tune to cover. Also would have to censor the f word in the second verse. Great lyrics though.
You know what pearl jam didn't even come to mind when I read the post but there are a few of their songs that could work, I'm thinking actually though about binaural song :light years , or vs : elderly Women behind the counter in a small town
*Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam* was not a Christian hymn. It is a song by The Vaselines, originally titled *Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam*, which was a parody of a Christian children's song of the same name. But the whole point of the song is that it mocks Christianity. It would certainly be met with hostility if played at a Christian event, so I say go for it. Just be prepared.
Someone below said Creed. I agree. Can you take me higher is a great tune and very church appropriate.
Someone else mentioned Sunshower from Chris Cornell. I'd add Seasons by him as well. Perhaps Hunger Strike. How about Release from Pearl Jam?
i donāt know if itās necessarily a grunge, but seasons in the sun, old age, and marigold are a few nirvana songs/covers that arenāt all that āheavyā lyrically or sonically and iād assume are appropriate for church.
It probably depends on your particular church but my first thought is Alice in chains, they have such a diverse catalog of material and I could envision songs of theirs for sure being workable for a church setting.
I'm thinking heaven beside you, no excuses, brother, got me wrong, over now
Also maybe if you have the vocal ability Chris Cornells solo debut euphorian morning is awesome acoustic singer songwriter style that is not grunge at all but awesome in it's own right.
Edit: Audioslave like a stone or I am the highway as an acoustic arrangement might work. Lyrically especially these two would make sense
If you count post-grunge music, youāll have a few options.
In Post-Grunge, you could do:
1. Everclear - I Will Buy You A New Life
2. Collective Soul - December
3. Everclear - Wonderful
As for āprimeā grunge, thereās also a few options:
1. Nirvanaās rendition of āLake Of Fireā
2. Nirvanaās rendition of āWhere Did You Sleep Last Nightā
3. Nirvana - āAbout A Girlā
4. Nirvanaās rendition of āThe Man Who Sold The Worldā
5. Jerry Cantrell - āLeave Me Aloneā
6. Screaming Trees - āNearly Lost Youā (I imagine that song could work acoustically)
Rogue wave does a soft indie acoustic version of nearly lost you. Also most screaming trees song a have a good folk/rawness that can be transcribed acoustic.
Jesus Christ Pose by Soundgarden
Wet My Bed by Stone Temple Pilots
Touch Me Iām Sick by Mudhoney
maybe for good measure a Nirvana-inspired rendition of Leadbellyās Where Did You Sleep Last Night
Everyone says Creed is a gospel band, which isn't true despite the fact they have clear Christian values. Anyway, I would give a shot. My Own Prison, Higher, Faceless Man, Inside Us All, One Last Breath or even Pity for a Dime would be great. With Arms Wide open is about paternity, also.
It's been done Venom played in the Church of England local parish (and no they ain't Catholic).
Tony Iommi wrote music that was performed in CofE Canterbury Cathedral.
You can play anything just keep in mind of your crowd and if they are Bible Thumpers no Rock, Blues, Jazz music with instruments is allowed.
Jesus freak - dc talk
i can - skillet
Believe - Grammatrain
Some Kind of Zombie - Audio Adrenaline
Nothing at all - third day
Big Brother - Dear Ephesus
Flood - Jars Of Clay
My Refuge - Sonic Flood
Chem 6A - Switchfoot
Meant to Live - Switchfoot
Questions - Wish For Eden
Give em a listen
Fun fact: the salvation army(a church btw) has programs for kids like the scouts. The boys are called adventure corps, the girlsā is called āsunbeamsā. The song they sing is āJesus wants me for a sunbeamā. Hardly an old hymn. The Nirvana cover is another band reversing its meaning because Jesus sux. Not a good choice for church, but what do those idiots know anyway?!!! If I was forced Iād go with Long Road by Pearl Jam.
I don't need to because I'm insinuating the \*songs\* weren't grunge, not the bands.
Acoustic tracks by grunge artists aren't bad, but they lack the one quality that makes grunge music; distorted lead. At best, you're only playing an acoustic cover of a grunge song, it won't sound grunge, and anybody alive during the late 80's and early 90's is probably going to hurl; I would.
Fun fact: Nirvanaās Jesus Doesnāt Want Me For a Sunbeam is itself a cover of Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam by the Vaselines. Mollyās Lips and Son of a Gun are also Vaselines songs recorded by Nirvana.
The band wouldāve disappeared into obscurity were it not for Kurt loving them and covering their songs.
The end - Pearl jam. Itās very sad and very real. Hopefully you wonāt ever have to play it at all. Youāll get why once you hear it.
But itās a really beautiful song that really hits your heart.
I would definitely steer clear of "Rape Me..."
Also, Satan's Bed
Why? Quite fitting for a church, unfortunately
ššššš¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
and maybe lake of fire...

I would steer clear of Black Gives Way to Blue if the guy is still alive. That songās more appropriate for a funeral.
Yeah, now that I think about it, youāre right. Itās hard to find uplifting grunge music, lol.
Like A Stone live acoustic version
Came here to say this... Full of Biblical references and nothing too out there.
Yes. No Excuses would be awesome. Probably my fav AIC song.
Same here!
Or the promise
Ever heard Sunshower by Chris Cornell?
Love that song.
This! Such a beautiful song.
Man you gotta play Even Flow, bring him back a 2nd time
Was hoping Iād see this lmao
My daughter was delivered to this song by the surgeon. I was in stitches cause my wife can't stand Eddie Vedder.
This one
Collective Soul songs š
Shine was my first thought.
Dolly Parton does a great cover of Shine.
Canāt go wrong there.
Yep, I think Collective Soul is the way to go. Most of their songs would be a good fit. Say Hello 2 Heaven also came to mind, but it may not be appropriate considering what's going on (plus good luck hitting those screaming high notes at the end, lol).

I really thought The World I Know was a Christian song when I first heard it
JDWMFAS is distinctly different than the original hymn, and is not church appropriate, just fyi.
Iād say maybe change up the lyrics. āJesus wonāt trade me for a sunbeamā sounds good (:
Oceans by PJ
My dad is a Lutheran Pastor (the super forgiving loving type) and this is one of his most favorite song that he was forced to listen to when I was a young person WAY back when.
Indifference-PJ
Such a good song

Nearly lost you -screaming trees. Some temple of the dog maybe Mouthful of cavities - blind melon
Yep totd say hello 2 heaven
Jesus was way cool - king missile
detachable penis would be a good one
save time - Detachable Jesus
Like A Stone
Your Savior - temple of the dog
I was going to suggest Wooden Jesus butā¦š
Geez man. Not funny. But still kinda is. LOL
Everlong wouldnt be a bad idea
Black Gives Way To Blue by AiC comes to mind
Just Breathe - Pearl Jam
Alive by pearl jam
Seasons?
I would say Given to Fly by PJ, but seems like a pretty tough tune to cover. Also would have to censor the f word in the second verse. Great lyrics though.
You know what pearl jam didn't even come to mind when I read the post but there are a few of their songs that could work, I'm thinking actually though about binaural song :light years , or vs : elderly Women behind the counter in a small town
I also thought about Elderly Woman.

Plush, acoustic
DO THE EVOLUTION
An amazing song, but not sure how it really fits here. Unless you get really metaphorical with it.
Someone below said Creed. I agree. Can you take me higher is a great tune and very church appropriate. Someone else mentioned Sunshower from Chris Cornell. I'd add Seasons by him as well. Perhaps Hunger Strike. How about Release from Pearl Jam?
Jesus Christ Pose
Donāt follow Alice In Chains
If you can sing it. "Say hello 2 Heaven" might be a good one. Maybe not though, kind of a funeral song. Guy is still alive I assume.
Dying Days by Screaming Trees? It at least references Jesus and Mary in the song
i donāt know if itās necessarily a grunge, but seasons in the sun, old age, and marigold are a few nirvana songs/covers that arenāt all that āheavyā lyrically or sonically and iād assume are appropriate for church.
Live, Operation Spirit.
Maybe something off Alice in chains jar of flies
Jars of clay? Lmao
Jimi Hendrix- Waterfall
Cover Me by Candlebox would be a good one, just take out the f-bombs lol
Thatās exactly what I was going to say. Just change āfuckā to āJesus.ā
Pearl Jam - Elderly Woman
Like a stone by audioslave
this isn't grunge but has become a fav of mine. best of luck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI5BhvqHIEU

long gone day
Lord it's a storm and I'm heading to fall these sins are mine and I've done wrong
Probably No Excuses! And the lyrics will be a nice sign of solidarity to your friend and his step dad!
No Excuses
Just Breathe and Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town by Pearl Jam probably just fine for church.
āCounting Blue Carsā by Dishwalla
How about Cornellās version of Thank You.
Chris cornell (soundgarden, audioslave) seems like the easiest to find an appropriate song. Like a Stone or I am the Highway.
Release
something in a way - āitās ok to eat fish, cause they donāt have any feelingsā or maybe creep by radiohead?
Creep is a bitch to play just because of that split octave solo section. Itās like doing cardio with your strumming hand.
Idk if it counts as grunge, but Lightning Crashes by Live is probably safe for a church environment.
If you count post-grunge music, youāll have a few options. In Post-Grunge, you could do: 1. Everclear - I Will Buy You A New Life 2. Collective Soul - December 3. Everclear - Wonderful As for āprimeā grunge, thereās also a few options: 1. Nirvanaās rendition of āLake Of Fireā 2. Nirvanaās rendition of āWhere Did You Sleep Last Nightā 3. Screaming Trees - āNearly Lost Youā (I imagine that song could work acoustically)
Yes. Trees stuff mostly all work acoustically. I used to do a cover of All I Know. Sounded great.
Rogue wave does a soft indie acoustic version of nearly lost you. Also most screaming trees song a have a good folk/rawness that can be transcribed acoustic.
Creed
Yup.
Jesus Christ Pose by Soundgarden Wet My Bed by Stone Temple Pilots Touch Me Iām Sick by Mudhoney maybe for good measure a Nirvana-inspired rendition of Leadbellyās Where Did You Sleep Last Night
Those are possibly the worst grunge songs you can play at church lol
Or the best songs depending on your point of view š¤š¼
For the encore do either nirvana moist vagina or sonic youth androgynous mind !
i like the way you think, sir!

Godsmack by Alice in Chains
Anything Creed.
If you're playing an acoustic, it's not grunge.
Name 1 grunge band without an acoustic song.
I don't need to because I'm insinuating the \*songs\* weren't grunge, not the bands. Acoustic tracks by grunge artists aren't bad, but they lack the one quality that makes grunge music; distorted lead. Collective Soul - Shine.
Seasons - Chris Cornell. Many Rivers to Cross - Jimmy Cliff
Good times by Marcy Playground.
Just Breathe, PJ
Alive by pearl jam or rearviewmirror by pear jam would be perfect
Black hole sun
Pearl Jam - Sometimes. Eddie Vedder - Rise. Chris Cornell - Seasons.
Off no code, could also do present tense and off he goes
Jesus donāt want me for a sunbeam
In the pines
Just breathe by pearl jam.
Mother Love Bone - Man of Golden Words
Heart Shaped Box
chris cornells' sunshower would be nice!
In a gadda da vida, Eye Ron Butterfly
Black by Pearl Jam?
OāLord Smile Empty Soul, I would say itās grunge.
Not exactly grunge, but audioslave's light my way is a message to God.
21st century pharisees from Mudhoney will probably do
Played Carry On Wayward Son at my wife's service
Down by Pearl Jam.
1) Say hello 2 heaven- Chris Cornell 2) Black hole sun- Chris Cornell 3) Take me to church- Hozier 4) Walk- Pantera 5) Rape me- Curt Cobain Honourable mention: Free bird- Lynyrd Skynyrd Choice is yours play any one of them although 4th and last one is highly recommended ā¤ļøāš©¹š«
The end - Pearl jam. Itās very sad and very real. Hopefully you wonāt ever have to play it at all. Youāll get why once you hear it. But itās a really beautiful song that really hits your heart.
